Grace Jones quits role in troubled James Bond film moments after arriving on set
THE troubled James Bond film has suffered another blow after Grace Jones quit her much-hyped role moments after arriving on set.
The diva, 70, who played iconic villain May Day in 1985’s A View To A Kill, walked away from the movie after discovering how few lines she’d been given.
Boss were left frustrated after wasting precious time and money securing a luxury residence for her to stay in near Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.
A source said: “Grace’s 007 homecoming was meant to be a real crowd-pleasing moment. Bosses were really excited about landing her.
“Of course, she comes with a reputation, so they organised premium accommodation and rolled out the red carpet on set to make her feel welcome.
“But it turns out Grace was expecting to play a bigger role in the movie and took her brief cameo as a slight.
“She was out of there quicker than it takes to rustle up a martini.”
Grace’s cameo, thought to involve a scene opposite Daniel Craig, was first rumoured back in April.
It’s the latest setback to befall Bond 25, which earlier this month was rocked by three huge explosions on set.
The film was delayed after Bond actor Daniel, 51, tweaked ankle ligaments last month, forcing filming to be cancelled.

Who was she going to play--some sort of elder stateswoman like Teresa May?

Didn't they give her a script? Sounds odd.

I still can't believe we are getting another Daniel Craig Bond movie after he told everyone who would listen he would rather "slit his wrist" than do another Bond movie.

Daniel Craig seems like a total douche.

R3 right and this is why all of the who is the next Bond debating online is ridiculous.
The answer is and was always going to be Daniel Craig, for at least another decade.

Roger Moore stayed on as Bond longer than he wanted to because the producers wouldn't look for a new actor.
Daniel Craig is staying on as long as he can and won't give the producers a chance to find a new actor.

Daniel Craig was begged to stay, and they kept offering more money to the point he couldn't refuse r8.

Damn. Some things never change, I guess. I still remember when she was supposed to perform at Tracks in Washington, DC some time in the late 80's. She was late, and then she only sang three songs before she left the stage and the club. People were PISSED, but everyone got refunds and free drinks, so...
Tracks had a final "Grace Jones" night where they played ALL of her music, before they banned it.
Once a diva...

Craig as Bond has killed my interest in the films.
I’ve seen two of his Bond films in theaters (and tried *so* hard to like them) but I’m done now.
His acting is flat, he looks like a troll doll to me in the face, and he doesn’t have the movie star “charisma” to make up the difference.
I haven’t enjoyed Bond since he has been in it. At least those Pierce movies were fun camp; the Craig films have been beyond boring.

He looks like crap in a suit too, hardly elegant---and when the camera is shooting the back of his head, all I can see are those big pink ears sticking out like signal lights.
Grace should have been grateful for any high profile gig---I actually thought she was dead long ago.

Bond is an actual character, with actual features, history, likes and dislikes. There is a canon of Bond books. He doesn't regenerate like Doctor Who.
Write something new and amazing for Idris. But to attempt to make him - or any black actor - into Fleming's Bond will ruin both the Bond franchise and that actor's career.

Why can't there be an amazing new Black MI6 agent, with his own story, his own likes and dislikes, his own character, his own history, and make a huge series of movies about HIM?

R38 Moore was contractually obligated to stay on until a new actor was found. He knew by Octopussy that he was already passed it, but the producers wouldn't replace him.

On a big budget film, you generally sign a contract before you arrive on set. I don't think Grace can treat this like a concert she could blow off back in the day.
And they didn't show her a script before she came?
Doesn't add up.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 8, 2019 12:41 AM

r45 there may have been script changes between the time she signed on and then showed up for filming, resulting in less lines and screen time than she had originally anticipated.

When Bond actors threaten to leave the Bond franchise it's all a salary negotiation ploy. I believe the only time it backfired was with Pierce Brosnan who didn't get what he wanted, but then there were other problems that put a stop to the Bond franchise for a little while.

I'm already hating that they're killing off Madeleine Swann in this next Bond. The Broccolis are killing off all the women James Bond loved - Tracy, M, Vesper Lynd and now Madeleine.

r50, The Living Daylights is probably one of the best Bond films, but Licence To Kill is probably the worst since it didn't feel like a Bond movie (with him going full on rogue and it was visually more violent than all the others).

by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 9, 2019 2:19 AM

R56 - someone upthread said that she did have the script already, but there had been some rewrites since then and her part was reduced from the original script she read. I mean, that does happen. Even to legit film actors who work far more regularly than she does. I think she should have swallowed her pride and still done it... she would have gotten so much buzz for it and probably sold a bunch more concert tickets off of the millions of dollars of worth of earned media her appearance would have generated.

That's true, R74, but she's definitely mellowed in her old age, R74. The idea of her recording a Bond tune at this point is ridiculous. But she certainly remains a fantastic live performer. Seen her in concert a couple of times in the US since 2009 and she has undeniable stage presence and still sang very well. No, she's not a powerhouse vocalist, she never was, but she was still impressive.

R8 The only reason why producers stick to the same actor is money, not laziness. Craig has proven to be a box office draw in the Bond films so why would they take a chance on new face while the old one is still willing and able.
