Wimbledon 2019
We once again return to the hallowed lawns of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for the third major of the year, The Championships, Wimbledon, with its cathedral of tennis, Centre Court. Some first round gentlemen's matches that may be of interest to DLers, whether because of the game or eye candy are:
#1 "Nole" meets Kohlschreiber before we boob over to the battle of the eye candy cuties FAA vs. the return of Popsicle. Humbert Humbert faces La Mon, and South African Anderson (4) meets Herbert while pockmarked face yet nice-assed Wawrinka goes against Bemelmans. Finally in the bottom of the top half of the draw are Vesely vs. A. Zverev.
Moving on to the bottom half of the draw (where coincidentally where both Thiem and Nadal are placed), we have Domicakes Thiem (5) vs. Deplorable Querrey. Thiem team! No Fuck-sovics vs. the other Novak are up next, while Tiafoe is the foe of da Fog. Cilic vs. Mannarino may be interesting. If recent history is a guide, Putin admirer Shopbottom may lose against Lithuanian Berankis. Tomic vs. Tsonga may have fireworks on one side of the court as may Kyrgios vs. Thompson of the porn stache. Sugita faces French Open-winner and ass picker Nadal (3). Taylor Frtiz faces Beard-itch, and Poohey plays Gasquet. Finally Lloyd Harris of South Africa meets South African-descended Gramps Federer (2). Overall it seems the bottom half has more interesting possibilities.
On to the ladies. Australian Barty, the new world number one and French Open champion, meets Zheng. S. Williams (11) meets Italian Gatto-Monticone. DL fave and Mad Magazine cover boy Carlo Suarez Navarro goes against Sam Stosur. Ova, Sharap, the Doper, meets Parmentier. The Other Maria faces Kerber (5), and Zidansek is matched against penciled-in finalist Bouchard. Svitolina (8) vs. ova, Gavril may be of some interest followed by Danielle "Are we sick of seeing her winning?" Collins vs. the lovely-looking Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. Granny Vee goes against fellow United Statesian 15-year old Cori Gauff. Finally Putin's daughter battles Osaka (2).
As always, let's keep the discussion civil (including discussion about Hingis), and will Pam Shriver ever find a English lad with whom to roll in the grass?
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same

Thanks r4. I just checked listings for the week including Saturday and no mention of Wimbledon. No mention of any tennis anywhere and zip information for tennis on the sports channels. VERY strange.

Who were the final 4 on the men's side back in 2009? Pencil in that lineup for this year.
As for the women, I eagerly await the inevitable Aliaksandra Sasnovich v. Camila Giorgi final.

I haven't been able to post for the past few days, but just wanted to give a heads up on my day at Wimbledon on Monday. I ran the the whole gamut of DL Tennis Faves: a set and a half of Deliciano on Court 11, the whole match of Popsicle Vs. Auger-Alliassime on 12, the last 3 sets of Crazy Benoit on 14, and watched Young Grigor crash and burn out on 15. One of the random highlights was Crazy Benny blowing up at the Umpire in the Final set as apparently he expected food to be brought to him on Court. When the Umpire explained it wasn't possible he started chuntering and gesticulating about the vicinity of the Media Centre Restaurant. Typical random Benoit. Grigor looked like a wreck by the end of his match. Very haunted.

R155 I take your point certainly. Perhaps the World Cup women's team is inflaming my sense of patriotism a bit.
However, at least for Fritz and Querry, they scored large upsets. Berdych is a solid, experienced player. Taylor is 21 and only just won his first ATP title. While Thiem is ranked 4 in the world right now. I still think these matches today were a big deal

Yes, R159, it’s no small feat to take out either Thiem or Berdych although as one poster aptly put it upthread, Thiem on grass is like a cow on ice, and Berdych’s best days are clearly behind him.
I also go for the tall and skinnies, though FAA, Harris and Hurkacz are more my cups of tea in that category.

Account finally working again! Too many matches have passed to comment on them all, but it's already been a messy tournament.
Is anyone else pissed off at the court speed? Many players saying it's like clay. Even pushers like Wozniacki and Sloane complained that it was too slow.
Things aren't looking great for Venus' health right now, I wonder if she'll make it to next year. Things also aren't great for Meldonia, whose body will literally collapse in on itself unless they take her pills off the banned list.

They need to give it a #2 buzzcut. Kudla also complained, Federer and Serena couldn't hit through it at all, Basilashvili (one of the hardest hitters on either tour) was getting into long clay-esque rallies.

[R154] [R141} here. I can't say I was totally blown away by Alliassime: his serve was misfiring for long periods of the match: I think he served at least 8 double faults. He's definitely a very stylish player, but he definitely didn't dominate. Popsicle played well: some really great volleying and classy drop shots. Their embrace at the net at the end of the match wouldn't have looked out of place at a gay wedding.

I fear Kyrios is going to get destroyed by Nadal. Further, I fear Nadal wins this tournament. Many have said how "weak" he is on this surface. He's not as he has solid past results to prove otherwise. I like Nadal, the person, but hate is game so much. Reports of the slower grass surface will only enhance his chances.
Just damn.

You know they are going to give the show courts a buzzcut this evening at Federer's request.
Elina Svitolina is so lucky. Two weeks ago in Birmingham she got beaten by Russian one-handed-backhand player Margarita Gasparyan. Today she was being THOROUGHLY outplayed by her again. 40 winners for Gasparyan to Svitolina's 12, the Russian was up a set and 5-4 (and 30-30), after some tension she hurt her knee badly when hitting a serve and collapsed to the ground. Tried to continue but ended up having to retire. She was really playing brilliantly. Sigh.
Azarenka played an amazing match and after going 2-0 down to Ajla Tom, won the next twelve games in a row. Invisible double bagel. If she can keep that level she can cause trouble to anyone in the draw. Hsieh and Sakkari are also through, and a great doubles win for lesbian couple AVU and Greet Minnen... GAY RIGHTS!!!!

She also retired in the middle of the match against Sabalenka already this year (after benefitting from a retirement in the previous round from Wang Xinyu, the 16 year old Chinese junior who was giving her an ass whooping). That's two mid match retirements and a tournament withdrawal in her last five events.... who is this bitch kidding?
The mixed draw is out and it looks like a LOT of fun this year.
Granny Venus Williams and Big Booty Tiafoe, Serena and Misery Murray, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray, Sam Prehistosur and Legend Leander Paes, Hsieh Su-wei and her little brother Hsieh Cheng-peng, Aryna Sabalenka and Rohan Bopanna....

Medvedev would yell often when Popyrin made errors, and he hit a couple of balls at net directly at Popyrin when that wasn't necessary to win the point. He's often spoiling for a fistfight with his opponents and has challenged them to fight after the match, e.g. with Tsitsipas.

R229 yeah I know but he's like a fairweather friend. I bet you if Dimitrov ever gets his shit together at 1 slam and goes all the way, Patrick will suddenly be in his box too because Grigor trained at his academy a couple years ago
Last year when Chardy stopped losing in every first round, Patrick was glowing and made sure to tell everyone on espn that Chardy trains at his academy too. He didn't mention Chardy before his mini-revival last year
by Anonymous | reply 230 | July 3, 2019 8:34 PM

I take your point, R230, but that just raises the question: just how many tennis pros have trained at Mouratoglou's academy at one time or another? And maybe that's his strategy -- cast the widest net possible so that you can always re-attach yourself to someone whom you once trained.

Madison Keys is a mess. It's so weird seeing someone with the weapons to beat everyone else on the tour, and every once in a while she actually plays at that level too. But her schedule is too limited and she has NO match rhythm, which is where all the errors come from. She's on the Venus Williams schedule because of her injuries but she's only in her mid 20s.
Gauff's serve is already terrifying. If humans keep growing until 21, she has 6 more years of growing, once she gets taller and has more angle on it? It could be over for a lot of these girls.
America's Sweetheart Danielle's Colon benefited from a massive choke from #13 seed Sevastova (who was up a set and a double break 3-0).

I notice that when I scroll down normally while reading - eg more slowly - it doesn't keep loading the posts every couple of scrolls like it usually does.
That sucks for Harriet Dart but after a soft draw (some LL and then Beatriz Haddad Maia) she is now in the round 3 of singles at a slam. Something pretty much no British players aside from Konta can expect. The fact that Jay Clarke ditched her just to leech off all the attention Cori Gauff is getting is pretty lame. It shows you that he was always going to get a WC anyway, no matter who he paired with, despite being such a scrub. Fucking LTA.
Kind of related: while I like and admire Cori Gauff and definitely think she will be future #1 and slam winner, why DOES she have so many sponsors already? It's not like she can even play many tour level (aka televised) events at this point. She has a $1 million dollar deal with Barilla.... how many more people are buying their penne just because some junior tennis player has some vague association with them?

He isn't, R255? Did you watch the press conference? It seems Gimelstob did not tell him the whole truth and Novak was not aware that the plea meant it was a final conviction. He said if that was the case he would not want Gimelstob back. He and others have said that Gimelstob did good work for players/the council but this does not mean they would want him back at all costs. Novak said he would read the victim impact statement etc. and then get back to the journalist about the situation.
The British media have seemingly decided to blame him for everything, seeing him as an easy target. He is rightly angered by this in my view.

You don’t think, r265, that as president of the player council, Djokovic should have done his due diligence regarding Gimelstob and read up on the court case, especially considering he was actively pushing for Gimelstob to be reinstated? Perhaps he should have been more up-to-date on everything, yes, R266. But I have seen nothing to confirm he was actively pushing for Gimelstob to be reinstated...
As for something being "off" about him as president, I completely disagree. It seems he is just the first to represent an actual threat to the status quo of tournaments running the show and players being forbidden from unionizing to protect their own rights and ensure that prize money is better distributed so that lower-ranked players can also get by.
I do think it may be an both an impossible as well as a thankless task though. He would certainly be better off personally leaving this mess behind him and only focusing on his tennis. However, I also admire the fact that he is not doing that. Even journalists are saying at least he is facing the topic head on and not just saying "no comment" like others.

I'm just curious for the older posters here who hate Kyrgios, did you also hate McEnroe and Connors? They both said and did all kinds of things in their day but were celebrated as bad boys who brought in massive ratings. The only difference is Kyrgios hasn't won slams yet
and he is 1 of the best talents. Not sure how anyone who's seen him play at his best can say otherwise. It's all mental with him. He's not consistently focused. That has nothing to do with his shotmaking, power and athleticism

Johnny Mac already won a slam when he was 20. Kyrgios is 24. Don't say he's talented again. He's mentally handicapped. He ain't winning shit.
Johnny had a temper but he knew how to harness it and channel it to help him win. Not Kyrgios.
They are not on the same level. so insulting to John and Jimmy.

I want this to go 5. You rarely see two players going at it who genuinely, OUTWARDLY hate each other. The tennis has largely been very good too.
And Kyrgios may have been an asshole for hitting Nadal but he didn't really 'dance', just kind of walked away because Nadal was at the net glaring at him like a diva (kind of demanding an apology). Also let's not act like Nadal isn't purposely abusing the lack of a shot clock at Wimbledon. He knows it's pissing Nick off and he's been taking as long as 30 seconds in between serves.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | July 4, 2019 6:24 PM

R302 no one who knows anything about tennis would take you seriously if they heard you say "Kyrios is not that talented".
and you cannot compare the state of the game now to the early 80s. I was comparing temperament and behavior alone, not the level of game.

Did McEnroe insult his fellow players? I never heard that, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Btw., what are everyone's thoughts on Matteo Berrettini? He seems sweet here, but I thought he was a bit annoying when he played Sascha in Rome last year. Has he said or done anything highly objectionable?

Ivan Lendl didn't start winning slams until his mid 20s. Does that mean he wasn't talented?
Some players like Hingis won all their slams at an early age and then never again.
so you can't go by age alone

I'm not condoning all of Kyrgios' behavior but the big 3 need to be challenged instead of always being treated like kings. When Kyrgios is mentally focused he can beat all of them as he's shown. He's good for the game

From what I remember, John McEnroe only went after the refs.
Kyrgios is his own worst enemy. Basket case. I see 50 year olds acting like they are still in their 20s all the time. This kid is never gonna mature. He's like a 12 year old. Waste of a "talent".

In the pantheon of assholery I'd put it in Connors, Kyrgios, McEnroe order. Connors was just obnoxious and unfunny with no imagination while Kyrgios has been bizarre and unpredictable and sometimes entertaining for all the wrong reasons. McEnroe was articulate enough to make a good case when he got into it. All three are players I'd watch in hopes of their demolition.

Not a Nadal fan but I am almost rooting for him if it DOES have to be one of the big 3. This would be a big 'fuck you' to Wimbledon after bumping his seeding and giving him a draw from hell.... Kyrgios followed by Tsonga in the first week of a slam? While Federer is playing British WC scrubs? Bye.

Marcos Baghdatis expected to cry happy tears and he did just that after his retirement was confirmed on Thursday.
The 34-year-old Cypriot announced plans to call time on his 20-year career when his Wimbledon campaign ended.
He admitted before the tournament started that he would struggle to keep his emotions in check when that moment arrived, and it came on day four following a 6-1 7-6 (4) 6-3 defeat to Matteo Berrettini.

I SO want Tiafoe to be the American getting the big results, but his forehand technique has to be one of the worst i've ever seen. It looks like he has to dislocate his entire shoulder to hit it, such a giant swing. Nothing economical or practical about it, it's not even like it's one of the heaviest on the tour.

Venus was probably planning on playing with Murray actually. I think her teaming with Harriet Dart in Birmingham was almost like a favour to the LTA ($$$) and warming her up to play mixed with Andy. They're all connected (through Judy Murray), she was in with the British higher ups after that.
But then the media kept asking Serena about it and Vee probably let her have it after losing early in singles, because she's been in Europe since Rome and hasn't gone home yet and taken care of her body. But eventually decided to stick around for fun and found Tiafoe last minute.

The servebots may be struggling in the ATP, but it looks like the WTA equivalent may be on the way to winning a slam.
Was a great match but actually painful to watch Hsieh's creative tennis lose out to Pliskova's servebotting, in three close sets. Especially since she was playing GREAT. Hsieh had 33 winners to 10 unforced errors, a first serve %age in the late 60s, better conversion on BPs (2/5 to Pliskbot’s 2/11), and more second serve points won.

I can't believe so many upsets in the men's field but none were the big 3. Almost all the other real contenders are out now.
Raonic and Tsonga if they can stay healthy, serve big and play consistently have the best chances. Big "ifs" though
Gauff is the most impressive teen we've seen in ages. She makes Anisimova seem like yesterday's news and she's impressive too.
Venus/Tiafoe win their first match together.
Halep socked Azarenka didn't expect that to be so easy

And so it took a barely 21 yo to make FAA look like an 18 yo.
I found that the length of UH's returns was just stupendous. Most of them were less than 2 feet away from the baseline. Seeing him returning like that felt like watching a good-day Djokovic. Of course FAA never really had the chance to feel comfortable on his own service games.
I hope Ugo gets a chance to at least make it a match against Djokovic but I'm afraid Djokovic will rise up to the occasion and make it all too much clinical.

Djokovic should resign from this exhausting council. it does him no good!!!
At Wimbledon, Behind-the-Scenes Tennis Politicking Comes to the Forefront
He took over in 2016 as president of the 10-player council, which represents the players in the ATP’s joint governance structure. Djokovic has been an aggressive agent for reform, leading a renewed call for increased prize money at tour events, exploring ideas for restructuring the tour’s business model and supporting the ouster of chief executive Chris Kermode.
Then three days before Wimbledon began, three players resigned from the council after a contentious seven-hour meeting, more fallout from Gimelstob’s criminal case and resignation.

The feud between Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon, after Kyrgios’ brother Christos levelled a foul-mouthed insult at the Spanish superstar.
Nick Kyrgios broadcast a live video on Instagram from a pub after his four set loss to Nadal, in which Christos came on screen and called Nadal a “f***ing p***y”.
The firebrand Australian made some controversial comments of his own, repeatedly referring to Nadal as ‘Ralf’ and admitting to mocking the Spaniard throughout the match.
"Bro every time he hit a good shot I turned to my box and was like 'yep, goodbye Ralf'," Kyrgios said.

And Djokovic appears to have that same inherent level of anger, condescension, derision and all-consuming ego as Gimelstob.

I think Novak has shown remarkable patience with the media regarding the entire player council drama that has been going on for months, even before the Gimelstob issue began. He also reacted very wisely regarding Kyrgios' stupidity. I for one wish he'd get angrier and use that as fuel, but he does not generally seem to be someone who seeks out drama or confrontation. This is also why I think he remains friendly with people he disagrees with. Not everyone is able to just cut out people from their lives whose behavior they might disapprove of, especially if they have to interact with them regularly for whatever reason.

He should, however, have conducted due diligence by looking into the plaintiff's statements regarding Gimelstob's crime. Instead, he blindly supported Gimelstob even after Gimelstob pleaded no contest. Gimelstob acknowledged the sentencing judge's statement that by pleading no contest, Gimelstob admitted his guilt. This directly contradicted Gimelstob's statement to the ATP that he would clear his name.

Yes, and I previously said he should have been more familiar/up-to-date on everything surrounding the case. He should not have believed whatever Gimelstob told him. But that is it. The rest of it is not his sole responsibility. His vote counts no more than others' votes and he has no authority to ban Gimelstob as far as I know. Does the ATP itself have this authority? I read some saying the CEO would have it, but I am not sure. People are also wondering why Kermode or the Board of Directors were never asked about this.

Gramps was real grumpy on court today. He was routining Pouille but unhappy and really testy about certain calls. He challenged one mid-rally, glaring over at the line judge and doing a gesture as if to say "come on, you missed that?" Hawkeye confirmed that the ball was in (aka Federer was wrong) and he got even crankier. I don't see him playing beyond next year under any circumstances, he's not even having fun unless he's just won a slam.
I can't believe Sloth Stephens has now lost four times THIS YEAR to RoboKonta. On EVERY surface. She really needs to step her game up. No effort at all.
Strycova announces this will be her last or second last Wimbledon. Unsure if she will play next year. Would be nice if she can beat Mertens and equal her career-best result (made the QF here) five years ago. And win the doubles title with Hsieh, which would put her in great position to claim the #1 ranking.
I am putting out a no guts, no glory prediction that Ali Riske beats Ash Barty tomorrow. The #1 has barely been tested, and she has only played I think one top 20 player during this great 15 match win streak of hers. Meanwhile Riske is 13-1 on grass this year and for once seems mentally tougher, coming back from big deficits to defeat her opponents.

I'm not as bold as the poster above who predicted a Riske win, but I am predicting a Gauff win over Halep, and I don't think it's that much of a stretch. I think Halep can be tough as nails, but if she resists the net, even on slower grass, Gauff wins. Gauff reminds me of a young Serena, Venus, and Graff--her attitude seems to be: give me the ball, I'm ready.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | July 7, 2019 12:20 PM
|
Gauff is 15, she is amazing but she is very far from the level of a top player. She was on the verge of losing against Hercog (and show great potential when she fought and end winning).
Simona doesn't do well with pressure, but she really has no pressure here. It's a fourth round match on her least favourite surface and she destroyed Vika the previous round. I doubt Coco has a chance.
And i doubt Riske has a chance against Barty either, but that poster has a point, sometimes when you are not challenged previously you don't react well when someone gives you a fight.
by Anonymous | reply 458 | July 7, 2019 12:38 PM

I think Halep will destroy Gauff. She just isn't a top player yet but she will be. Where did Alison Riske come from? She's 13-1 on grass.
The Sousa match, his delayed grunt is off putting and ridiculous. If he weren't so cute! I was almost on Team Chav Evans because of it.
by Anonymous | reply 459 | July 7, 2019 2:11 PM

I'm not sure about Halep v Gauff. I mean all signs point to Screamona Help on paper, because unlike all of Gauff's previous opponents (who are tall and gangly, and in Vee's case injured and 88 years old), Halep can MOVE. Her whole thing is that she also doesn't make any errors - largely because she never tries to hit amazing shots... most of her balls are the same pace and depth which is why she never misses.
I think without her opponent donating unforced errors by the dozens, and chasing everything down just like she can, Gauff's run might come to an end. To be fair Polona really should have put her away and had multiple chances, so it wouldn't be a shock to see her out.
Having said all that, if ANYONE can cock it up, it's Halep. We've seen her give nervous, choke-y slam performances on so many occasions (remember all the delicious beatdowns by Mirjana Lucic? lol), and without Daren Cahill on her team I don't think she has realised that she could potentially go all the way in this bottom half of the draw. The fire isn't really there at the moment, in her interview she said this was her 'relaxing year' (after winning her slam), and she got destroyed by another teen in Anisimova at the French. The scoreline looks impressive against Vika, but that was more Vika losing the match than Halep winning it.

I wish the sports media would stop its predictable "she's the future of American tennis" every time someone wins a few matches at a slam. It immediately puts unnecessary pressure on them and we've seen what comes next, see Keys, Madison; Stephens, Sloane and Osaka, Naomi. Let Gauff have her moment and stop putting the pressure of becoming the next Venus or Serena on her shoulders.

At 15 Capriati beat Navratilova at Wimbledon, Evert beat Court at Charlotte and Seles beat Evert at Houston. Gauff beating Venus was a big deal.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | July 7, 2019 7:59 PM
|
R466 I agree in theory, but did you see Venus? Full elbow sleeve and not able to serve properly or hit a forehand over the net. Can't move more than two steps laterally (as she came out on to the court you could see her take some taping off her kneecap and put it in the bin). A little overweight - by her svelte standards - and puffed out.
When those youngens made their upsets, the veterans were in much better condition. Tennis was less physical as they came from the wooden racquet period, you didn't need massive power or groundstrokes (yet) until the Seles/Pierce/Davenport/Venus era (when Capriati came back she added power too) so tennis players aged a bit better because it was a much more gentle sport. And even then I believe they were all younger than Venus is now.
But yes, there's no doubt Coco has a huge future if she can stay healthy. I don't think we can predict THE 'next big thing' though. At 16 Hingis won almost every tournament on the calendar including 3 grand slams. I'm sure when that happened people expected much more from her but she 'only' ended up with 5. Seles had won 8 slams and wasn't even 20 yet when she was stabbed. Players get injured, retire, lose interest, can't deal with the pressure of success (Capriati, Osaka), new players come along... there are many other factors. Gauff has the full package now so hopefully she can continue to develop and not get sidetracked.

R476 Um, I don't think they needed her help. They always play out of their skin at the Olympics (Venus won her 6th consecutive tournament at Olympics 2000), and had just won Wimbledon singles and doubles on the same court a few weeks earlier. Serena never put on a better display of serving in her entire career, she barely lost any games that Olympics and gave a brutal beatdown to most of the top names in the sport (Wozniacki, Jankovic, Sharapova, Azarenka).
I'm not sure she offered them anything they didn't already get from their father and other coaches. Venus was beating MJ Fernandez even in her playing days (at the US Open 4th round).
I actually liked MJ Fernandez as a player (her match with Monica Seles at the Aus. Open is incredible, and her defeat of Gaby Sabatini at the French from 6-1 5-0 down was *LEGENDARY*). But a lot of other talented players could have had her opportunities if not for the nepotism and connections, and she continues to extend those to others. There's a BIG machine behind Coco Gauff, and she's part of it.

What do you think about this, Wimdledonistas?
[bold]Wimbledon: lawns look lovely, but time to keep off the grass[/bold]
[quote]Court surfaces should not pose an unnecessary risk to the well-being of players. But grass courts carry an inherent danger of slips and falls. As a natural surface, grass is not uniform. There are hard and soft patches, wet and dry patches and, as a result, slippery and non-slippery patches. In shaded parts of the court and in areas away from the baseline and sidelines, footing tends to be especially precarious and, as the evening draws in, the whole court can become dewy.

I called it! I'm never right about these things so i'm quite proud of myself for predicting that one.
Riske thoroughly deserved it too. In the last two sets I think they showed she made 26 winners and only 6 unforced errors. Terrific grass court tennis with so many points finished off at the net. Her grunt IS ugly but she's a very likeable personality and has been far and away the form player of the grass season this year.
Barty is still unproven against big players on big stages. In her entire 15 match win streak her best opponent was messy Madison Keys who has played like 5 events this year. Still hasn't faced a single top 10 player at a slam in her entire career.
Other results:
Zhang Shuai def. tactical MTO queen Dayana Yastremska in 3 sets.
Elina Svitolina def. Petra Martic in 2 sets. Now has twice as many slam QFs as Zverev.
Barbora Strycova at 33 def. Elise Mertens (also taking tactical MTOs) from a set and 5-2 down.

Or you can try to mess up Nadal's superstitious rituals.
REVEALED: Rafael Nadal's Wimbledon superstitions including touching SEVEN body parts before serving... and even the ball boys and girls are trained to deal with the eccentricities
He will remove his jacket facing the crowd, jumping as he does so, and carefully line two Evian bottles alongside one another, ensuring the labels are always facing the court.
Whenever serving, he will touch his bottom — seemingly unpicking a phantom wedgie — then his left shoulder, right shoulder, nose, left ear, nose again and right ear.
On second serves, he will drop the touching of the shoulders.
When heading for his chair, he will only step over the line using his right foot and once he has received his two towels.
he ball boys and girls of the All England Club know all this — they are even trained in the Spaniard's eccentricities.

I hate when Halep does the sign of the cross and then kisses up to god. What does she do when she loses? Give god the finger?
Hopefully Serena gives her an epic beatdown.

Right, R523, I agree. Still, remember that when Serena wins, Jehovah gets the shout out. A lot of players do similar things. DelPortro on the men's side. Others.

Tennis being seen as an elite sport is a myth. Most of these players are undereducated.

Five hours and at fifth set 12/12 tiebreak. Historical men's championship match.

Few things are sweeter than the tears of obnoxious Fedstans

I'm not a fan of Fed or Djokovic, but at least Federer doesn't cause the crowd to cringe whenever he wins with "boobs out" theatrics, nor does he cause ballboys to cower whenever a fit of pique or loss throws him into screaming rages and taunts against umpires and the crowd.
