by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 28, 2019 2:24 AM |
When did Yang use a naughty word?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 28, 2019 2:24 AM |
I think the Bernie has flamed out. He's getting the same amount of time as Wiliamson and Yang.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 28, 2019 2:24 AM |
Yang said "Ass"
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 28, 2019 2:24 AM |
Putting Sanders and Biden next to each other was sort of genius.
They are always in each other's shots in the background
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 28, 2019 2:24 AM |
A lot of people thought Sanders would attack tonight or be targeted. It's not happening they're kinda going around him
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |
Ucch Biden. He's off his game. He's kind of beloved for his good nature and his occasional quick wit, but he's getting all shouty like Bernie
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |
Tie Bernie's hands behind his back and he wouldn't be able to say a word.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |
Here is the pass the torch guy again.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |
WTF is Williamson talking about.
It's offensive that she is on that stage.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |
Marianne is too vague. What's her plan? She gets at the emotions but not the execution
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 28, 2019 2:25 AM |
Marianna Williamson looks like my aunt. Never realized she was Jewish but now it all makes sense.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 28, 2019 2:26 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 28, 2019 2:26 AM |

Who is the delusional loon talking about Bernadette Peters? It's 2019 not 1979.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 28, 2019 2:30 AM |
Biden botched that one completely. Pete's right, you need to secure the fucking elections first!
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 28, 2019 2:30 AM |
Climate change discussion without a discussion of the Green New Deal?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 28, 2019 2:30 AM |
Marianne’s first order of business is to call the PM of New Zealand and shit talk her?!?

I can see Pete as Commander in Chief.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 28, 2019 2:30 AM |

I am loving you people for realizing bow great Marianne looks for 66-
She truly looks awesome for her age- and she has a thin face, so its even more shocking.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 28, 2019 2:31 AM |
Someone who isn't nearly as funny as they think they are, R49. Just put them on ignore and move on, since they will undoubtedly post that picture over and over again.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 28, 2019 2:31 AM |
I know that, R56. It was a childish comment.

I rarely watch ad-supported TV and watching how awful the ads on MSNBC are I remember why
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 28, 2019 2:31 AM |
I can't believe she just trash-talked New Zealand because their PM said a kind word to a little girl. What an ugly nationalistic cunt, pardon my French.

Pete was the sanest candidate present, imho.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 28, 2019 2:32 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 28, 2019 2:32 AM |
Democrats need to stop using the term gun control. Democrats have been saying that since I was a child. They need to find a better language. Gay marriage got rebranded into Marriage Equality because it sounded like it included everyone and was non-threatening.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 28, 2019 2:32 AM |
I can imagine Liz Warren sitting back with her beer enjoying this

Unlike some others.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 28, 2019 2:33 AM |
r67 His staredown of Swalwell revealed something... sinister. I liked it, though.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | June 28, 2019 2:33 AM |
I'm sorry but putting Marianne Williamson on the debate stage was foolish. She was like your drunk old aunt at a party.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | June 28, 2019 2:33 AM |
Biden's flailing. Not addressing the question.
Seems like a decent fellow. But had his time in the sun.
Perhaps he could retire and spend time with Hunter and his new wife.

R91, I agree. Eric S. is hot and I'd be happy to give him a blowjob, but he should wait for the next cycle.

Beto, Ryan and gabbard need to go from the first one.

Harris didn't need to bring Biden down, everyone chipped some paint off him. He's a dinosaur, a vain silly man and a creepy misogynist.

Biden getting pissy as fuck was moment number two. Kamala trying to get dirty. Mmm mmm gurl.
Tracy Flick needs to shut the fuck up even though I agree with just about everything she said.
Pete looking like he wanted to kill the derpy turd was the most sexually arousing moment in politics.

Sanders still has a lot of money and name recognition and stubborn supporters, R270, so you're right that he's not leaving anytime soon.
I doubt he did himself any favors or any serious damage tonight but I suspect that he's going to see more polls where he drops from number two to number three or four, as some of the competition passes him by.

Takeaway from both nights:
Warren, Biden, Sanders, Harris, and Buttigieg will remain as front-runners for the nomination.
Booker and Castro will get a second look from many of the voters.
O'Rourke probably fared the worst of the well-known candidates.
I don't see anyone else really breaking through.

I'm amazed anyone would say Biden won... the pundits are screaming he fatally fucked up (on CNN anyway.). He's got to have a think through about how to message his record. Much of it made sense - AT THE TIME. Some talking head rightly observed one of Joe's problems is he's of a political generation where saying you're sorry is fatal.
Kamala is doin' that annoyin' Hillar thing to show she's folksier than her outfits...and droppin' her gs.
I know a lot of people don't like Joe for lots of reasons but I keep looking at the polls... the majority of the Democrats aren't very liberal... about 19% identify as very liberal. Whether it's Joe or not, it will be very bad for us if the nominee is too far left. This is a conservative, ill educated, fearful, football obsessed nation. It Is not ready for urban progressivism. It just isn't. The wrong candidate will hand the election to Trump.

For me personally, I think most consistent black voters are pragmatists. (The black millenials on Twitter are not your typical black voter.) IMO, they are going to vote based on what they know and who they think can take out Trump. They aren't going to move away from Biden until another candidate gives them reason to believe they can win the general election, as we saw in 08. I love Pete and I want to live in a world where Pete is President, but, like many others, I don't think Pete can take out Trump. But, if Pete begins to show more strength and gain more support from others, his black support would certainly grow.

I don't think we will ever see it in the numbers. But, here's two things that Mayor Pete is doing, in my opinion.... He's advancing how gays are being viewed by everyone. Now, this includes Black people who define themselves as being very religious. He's making them think about their religious views and how the religious leaders are supporting Trump. r417 the Lipstick Alley crowed pointed this out during that ill-advised "discussion" with protesters. He, for whatever reason, doesn't take criticism well. I believe he worked very hard to create a specific image for him, another glass closet, as a tough person but he appears to have deep insecurities, which is why he always looks pissed when challenged. You can't wear those emotions on a national debate stage.
I felt his answer started fine, but he can't answer why the number of black police officers in his city remains so disproportionate low compared to the community. He works very hard to avoid criticizing his police force which is why these issues have continued without much progress. We know he started his mayoral career with a racial controversy after firing the police chief. I get his trepidation, but I am shocked how unprepared he was to defend his own record. I'd say put him in a cabinet position, because he obviously wants out of South Bend.
His staff is extremely out of touch with racial issues and need to wake the fuck up, because he will be asked this again in the next debate. Once he hits the south, he can't afford to dance around that question.

Huge thanks to Poll Troll, one of my favorite posters! When you have time, please give us your analysis of both nights.
Harris' background as a prosecutor gives her the expertise to undo a lot of damage Trump has done in the judiciary. She emerged with some solid moments and memorable sound-bites, but will America buy it? Misogyny is alive and well, as unfair as that is. I'm not convinced Caucasians and, to be blunt, Caucasian women, will support her.
He may be the youngest candidate, but Buttigeig's calm, cool, collected demeanor may be the mature anecdote to Trump that resonates with many 'on-the-fence' Americans.
As Democrats, sometimes we take the 'inclusivity' thing too far, and tonight was a prime example. Williamson and Yang, in different ways, were an embarrassment and detracted from the viable candidates. Sure, they provided comedic relief we'll be joking about for years, but at what price? If we're going to beat Trump we have to appeal to moderate, middle-of-the-road Americans, not pander to the extremes.
Both nights were way more fun watching while reading the comments each of you made. Well done, DL!

At this point I could see a Biden/Harris doing quite well. Kamala would destroy Pence on a one on one debate but she would be fierce in the campaign trail going after Trump. She's almost like a Sarah Palin in the sense that Palin was able to motivate the crowds--her problem was that she was dumb and she let her popularity over take her.
[quote]Harris' background as a prosecutor gives her the expertise to undo a lot of damage Trump has done in the judiciary.
And, that's why she would make a perfect help mate to Biden. But, then there is Joe Biden....

If Biden wins the nomination, he won't go anywhere near her after that. She kinda cut the ground out from under herself with Biden, because she's created an unanswerable question if she was part of a ticket.... but she's obviously in it for the win or nothing.

Harris did very well, probably the best of the bunch, but I doubt it played as well in the critical swing states as it did on DL and on Twitter. Obama smartly knew when he ran in 2008 and 2012 that he couldn't come across as too angry or "too black." He knew how to play it "safe" and win the hearts of voters in overwhelmingly white states like Iowa. I'm not sure that Harris has the same appeal or skill. If she wants to appeal to the heartland, she needs to channel more of the economic populism of candidates like Warren and less of the angry black woman fighting for social justice. It really is all about the economy, stupid. And economic issues don't seem to be Harris' forte.

Some hard truths about Biden from Daniel Dale:
[quote]Biden's claim tonight that he only opposed federally mandated busing and did not generally oppose "busing in America" was a flagrant misrepresentation of his position in the '70s and '80s. He'd made crystal clear he opposed busing as a concept, as a matter of principle.
[quote]Biden's remarks on busing in the 1970s were generally very unequivocal -- "I oppose busing. It's an asinine concept." "A bankrupt concept." "Busing does not work." He expressed pride for making anti-busing sentiment "respectable" among liberals.
[quote]As recently re-reported by WaPo, Biden said things like this about busing: “What it says is, ‘In order for your child with curly black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin to be able to learn anything, he needs to sit next to my blond-haired, blue-eyed son.’ That’s racist!"
by Anonymous | reply 465 | June 28, 2019 4:43 AM |
Harris won by 65 %, with Pete a distant second with 12% & Biden at 7%. Of course people aren't ready to commit, but why refute what is clear to most people? Last night was a great night for Warren and a good night for Castro.

Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg spoke more words tonight than their standing in the polls might suggest:
by Anonymous | reply 481 | June 28, 2019 4:58 AM |
“As the only,” Senator Kamala Harris interjected during the second Democratic debate, in Miami, “as the only black person onstage, I would like to speak on the issue of race.” She directed her attention at Joe Biden. The former vice president’s record on civil rights—and his fond remembrances of segregationist senators—has recently faced a wave of scrutiny. He’s argued that his ability to work with those he disagrees with is a mark of civility, but the former prosecutor was prepared to challenge him. She wanted to address a particular part of his record.
“You also worked with them to oppose busing,” she said. “And you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.” Her team tweeted a photo of her when she was in school with the line “That little girl was me."
Biden stood, staring into the applauding audience, before objecting that Harris had presented a “mischaracterization” of his position on race and busing. “What I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education,” he said. It wasn’t a defense that helped.
The confrontation captured an evolution—of the Democratic Party, of the country—that has taken place within Biden’s lifetime. Harris reminded viewers that this was all in her lifetime, too, and how different a tale. There the two were, staring at each other, their personal stories inextricably bound up in the bigger American story.
Biden tried to defend himself before relenting to the clock. “Anyway,” Biden said, “my time is up.” Indeed it was.
ADAM HARRIS

The biggest winners of the debates were Kamala and Castro. They both moved up to the top tier because of their debate performances. Kamala actually having a good shot of winning the whole thing, and Castro moving into the Top 3 of potential VP candidates. Booker also did well.
I'm interested to see if Biden and Warren remain stable, or actually slip in the polls.
I thought Kirsten Gillibrand did well tonight, but she was so overshadowed by Kamala that it probably won't make a difference. It's a shame she wasn't in the first debate.

Based on early numbers from 538 & Morning Consult, Warren appears to have gained since last night, but it will take several days for more in-depth polling to come out.
As for Biden, as Harry Enten said tonight, CNN's polling has shown Biden's numbers with Black voters holding up until now, so the days after tonight will be the big test for him.

[quote] I don't understand the bussing issue?
Harris knows Biden. It was her opportunity to destroy any goodwill Biden might have with black voters because of his association with Obama: (1) Comma-la wanted all black viewers to know that Biden is an old white dude who OPPOSED bussing like all other racist old white dudes, so he doesn't deserve black support. (2) she wanted us to see that Biden lacks empathy, any facility for introspection and the ability to be contrite for his past racism. (3) she wanted us to witness how angry, harsh and unfeeling he is toward a BLACK woman who was aggrieved by racism. He was completely dismissive of her, and she wanted black people (particularly women) to see it.
In this regard, she scored some points tonight and Biden knows it.

It will be Harris and some Dem governor. You can't have a multiracial woman and a gay man (even a white one) on the same ticket. The country would have an epileptic seizure. We take incremental change, hence half-black non-threatening Obama. Kamala and some older white governor, same formula with Warren. Kamala checks two social justice boxes as it is.
I knew she would kill it on a debate stage. The DNC is going to regret the 2 debate formula in July because people will now want to see tonight's line up with Warren. It's become a battle of the laddies. You will see Biden continue to lead as Warren take s a hit and Harris comes in 3rd/4th. Pete will go to 6th, Beto will somehow keep supporters, but fall to Booker's level.

R541, Biden is leading with Black voters so far.
That may change after tonight's debate, but Biden's strength with Black voters has kept him in the #1 spot in polls until now.
Harry Enten discussed this earlier:
[quote]There are essentially two graphics I'm looking at. 1. Biden was at 49% with black voters in our CNN polls combining April/May. 2. Biden's support has been so steady at about 30%-33% in part because of number 1. Cause if tonight doesn't shake 1/2... What will?

by Anonymous | reply 544 | June 28, 2019 6:01 AM |
In retrospect, this is going to be viewed as a dumb move by Kamala Harris. She just blew up the only sure-shot Democratic ticket for the sake of, what, a few 24-hour news cycles?
And for no good reason: She was performing beautifully in this debate until that moment. As others have pointed out, busing is a dumb hill to die (or kill) on: It has always been controversial and unpopular with all segments of the population.
You're really going to paint Joe Biden as a racist? The man who outperforms every other Dem candidate with black voters by huge margins? The guy who gave Obama so much support?

r534 Hillary chose a bitch-made VP because she didn't want to deal with a strong willed man. Tim Kaine would have said yes man, no man to whatever Hillary wanted. She would dismiss him like one of his disposable Secrete Service Agents. This is why he flopped against Pence in the VP Debate. Just because I said safe, doesn't mean I meant weak.
Also Kaine was chosen because he could speak Spanish and help in VA, both proved useless. Hilary is no politician.

To those of you who thought Pete did well ... really? Were we watching the same debate? He totally botched the police shooting question and came across as chickenshit when he wouldn’t answer why he would or would not fire the police chief. Take a stand, dude. He already had ZERO chance of getting minority votes and this hurt him even more. He would be poison as the Democrat presidential or VP candidate. I’d love to see a high-ranking gay in the administration but he has screwed himself.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | June 28, 2019 6:02 AM |
Agree with R546. Hillary's campaign was too arrogant and irrational.
And Kamala needed to go for broke tonight. And she won. That's how a political fight played out in real life, girls. Hillary should have done the same to Bernie 3 years ago.

Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (a Dem) on CNN just now: "The busing issue is 40 years old. And Biden's point, then, was that you have to build up schools where children are and live. You see it in his education plan now – he's tripling funding. I'm not a surrogate for Joe Biden. All I'm saying is, we'll see how a 40-year-old issue plays out when the polls come through."

It seems like the strategy by Harris and Swalwell was to paint Biden and Pete as racist (thus Pete's death stare). Which is hardly the case for either one, and a real shitty thing to pull on a fellow democrat knowing that this shit will be reused by Republicans in the General.

We learned nothing from Bernie's protracted, futile character assassination of Hillary in the 2016 primary.
Why make the Repugs think up their own attacks against Democrats when we'll just cook them up ourselves and hand them over?

True. Biden without Harris is a rerun of HRC in 2016. He needs her. His campaign knows his support among black voters is no more significant than HRC's was in 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | June 28, 2019 6:16 AM |
Kamala started her statement saying that she didn't think Biden was a racist. She was calling out the pain that was caused by his policy position for people of color. It's completely different then calling him a racist.

Unfortunately, R555, that distinction is already totally lost, even on the journalists and commentators who are covering the debate.

[R43], I am deducting points from Kamala's team (and others) for tweeting that there was a little girl who was "bussed" to school when she was "bused." Bussed = kissed, which Biden doesn't have a history of opposing.
[R250], I saw Williamson and Hickenlooper make a very quick exit from the stage -- I think Hickenlooper even tripped over his own feet he was in such a hurry -- but Biden stayed, with Mayor Pete and others approaching him to shake hands. He then spent a considerable amount of time talking to and taking pictures with audience members from up there.

Kirsten's caterwauling is a real turn off. That and all the pandering for women with the Al Franken episode has sunk her boat for me.
Also not getting great vibes from "Man of the People" Joe. Has he been in the game so long that he's lost the touch refusing to answer press questions, mingle with the regular folk and rent homes for 20,000USD/month? It seems like people think he's the "safe" candidate because he's from the past. Newsflash! Despite cultural nostalgia for it, falling back on the past many SERIOUSLY wound this country. Following Trump/McConnell, there's no going back to "the way things were".
Bold, dynamism and yet paradoxically calm steering may be necessary for what lies ahead.
Although Marianne has NO chance for the presidency, props for her expanding the discussion, withstanding the NZ joke.
Yang, also.
Kamala may appear slick, but seems calculated with political incisiveness. Could see her replacing Barr; but not as Pres.
Pete has potential; but see many hurdles involving youth, big government experience, his personal preferences and minority vote.
Appreciate Beto's and Bernie's heartfelt passion. But don't see either capable of handling the helm as pres.
So far, Warren seems to have the alchemy of qualities which may be able to navigate new and treacherous waters: especially with the courts/congress/government imbued with characters of questionable ethics. Is the USA forward thinking enough to elect its first woman?
Inslee, though trailing, may have potential.
Bennett?
Sense we need a strong, stable guide who is familar with the system, but has fresh options. We're at a fulcrum point in this county's history. This may be one of the most important elections ever as we dismantle a withering, corrupt system and transform it.
A dream team for this transformation could involve most all the players in various roles by acknowledging and utilizing their strengths e.g.
Castro/Beto - immigration
Booker - housing
Joe and Bernie - advisory roles
Pete/Tulsi - foreign service
Yang - tech/business
Even Marianne for (Kuchinch's idea of) a Department of Peace and Diplomacy. As long as she leaves the flat jokes aside, could see her working in NZ with her "girlfriend", Jacinda!

Kamala is so smart, she connects everything with "working common people" because likely voters don't care for immigrants, for debt-ridden students nor for trans. I know this is a harsh reality for many progressive liberals. Just win the election on issues people really care, and then you can tackle progressive issues thereafter.

I forgot to add that MSNBC is owned by Comcast who just happens to be supporting Biden. I am sick of these news stations. There is no news anymore it's just every assholes opinion. You're welcome, R590. But, I don't know if I would call it generous but I think more humane is more appropriate. But, that's one of the issues of why our healthcare is sooooo expensive. You have far too uninsured many (and that's way more than undocumented workers) who have to resort to the emergency room.

And yet, over 3/4's of the rest of the world has universal healthcare for their citizens. Have lower healthcare costs. Now, many have longer life expectancy. Bernie's right here. This doesn't make sense

I'm amused anyone thinks the mythical debate with Trump will change anything.
The country won't turn on that. It knows who he is. I know you're hungry for the lily pond but it will mean fuck all.
The change, if any, will come down to platform and belief a resonant candidate will deliver better.
Whether Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren or Mayor Pete or Uncle Joe can wipe the floor with the fool in the White House doesn't much matter. Good theater but little else.

BRAVO!!! Standing ovation!!! There are too many caught up with the entertainment rather than the substance. Look... Kamala, had a GREAT night--however, if someone pounces on her team having a whole marketing campaign ready 30 seconds after having a good line, it's going to blow up. That was just stupid!
Biden held his own but he should be on all of these morning talk shows. If it grows that he's cranky, won't listen to staff, etc and that holds... he's done.
Mayor Pete had a good night but I saw his inexperience rear his head.
Bernie should be upset. He's getting lost in all of this.
Warren should be thankful that she got that first night! The country got to see HER.
Some others too. But, I thought last night's debate wasn't good. It just caused more campaigns to think of their strategic position. I think the voters lost last night.

I am in Japan at the G-20, representing our Country well, but I heard it was not a good day for Sleepy Joe or Crazy Bernie. One is exhausted, the other is nuts - so what’s the big deal?
This is actually one of the more effective tweets by Trump. He's hammering Joe already and trying to stick him with a narrative. Biden's team isn't serving him well. Biden NEEDED to be on "Morning Joe" this morning! They already got Mayor Peter, Kamala, amd Gillibrand (who is much better in interviews than a debate)

you really can't have a debate with all 10 people talking over each other. All mics should be shut off except for the person being asked a question. Then they should be shut off when their time is up. Every person should be asked the same question and it should go down the line. This way we may actually learn something.
