by Anonymousreply 1June 28, 2019 2:19 AM

Works for me. This is DL, after all.

by Anonymousreply 2June 28, 2019 2:20 AM

by Anonymousreply 3June 28, 2019 2:20 AM

Pete is calm and doesn't lose his cool.

by Anonymousreply 4June 28, 2019 2:21 AM

What did Yang say that was naughty? I missed it.

by Anonymousreply 5June 28, 2019 2:24 AM

When did Yang use a naughty word?

by Anonymousreply 6June 28, 2019 2:24 AM

I think the Bernie has flamed out. He's getting the same amount of time as Wiliamson and Yang.

by Anonymousreply 7June 28, 2019 2:24 AM

Yang said "Ass"

by Anonymousreply 8June 28, 2019 2:24 AM

Putting Sanders and Biden next to each other was sort of genius.

They are always in each other's shots in the background

by Anonymousreply 9June 28, 2019 2:24 AM

A lot of people thought Sanders would attack tonight or be targeted. It's not happening they're kinda going around him

by Anonymousreply 10June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

Ucch Biden. He's off his game. He's kind of beloved for his good nature and his occasional quick wit, but he's getting all shouty like Bernie

by Anonymousreply 11June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

Tie Bernie's hands behind his back and he wouldn't be able to say a word.

by Anonymousreply 12June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

Here is the pass the torch guy again.

by Anonymousreply 13June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

Are you sure it wasn’t “yass”?

by Anonymousreply 14June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

WTF is Williamson talking about.

It's offensive that she is on that stage.

by Anonymousreply 15June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

Marianne is too vague. What's her plan? She gets at the emotions but not the execution

by Anonymousreply 16June 28, 2019 2:25 AM

Marianna Williamson looks like my aunt. Never realized she was Jewish but now it all makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 17June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

That fight put both Biden and Harris off their game

by Anonymousreply 18June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

Oh Marianne keep going honey

by Anonymousreply 19June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

John Kennedy said... SHUT THE FUCK UP MARIANNE

by Anonymousreply 20June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

I think the mods are pissed Marianne is even there lol

by Anonymousreply 21June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

Isn’t Marianne about 70 years old?

by Anonymousreply 22June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

Can Marianne cry on cue while singing torch songs?

by Anonymousreply 24June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 25June 28, 2019 2:26 AM

I agree with GUN VIOLENCE

by Anonymousreply 26June 28, 2019 2:27 AM

Does Chuck wear cargo shorts and baggy Polo shirts with t-shirts underneath them to complete the 90s vibe of the goatee

by Anonymousreply 27June 28, 2019 2:27 AM

Swalwell "Pass the torch, pass the torch, pass the torch" - bwhahahahahahaha

by Anonymousreply 28June 28, 2019 2:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 36June 28, 2019 2:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 37June 28, 2019 2:28 AM

I would killllllllll to hear Obama’s private comments on Biden

by Anonymousreply 38June 28, 2019 2:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 49June 28, 2019 2:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 57June 28, 2019 2:30 AM

I am loving you people for realizing bow great Marianne looks for 66-

She truly looks awesome for her age- and she has a thin face, so its even more shocking.

by Anonymousreply 58June 28, 2019 2:31 AM

Someone who isn't nearly as funny as they think they are, R49. Just put them on ignore and move on, since they will undoubtedly post that picture over and over again.

by Anonymousreply 59June 28, 2019 2:31 AM

I know that, R56. It was a childish comment.

by Anonymousreply 60June 28, 2019 2:31 AM

I rarely watch ad-supported TV and watching how awful the ads on MSNBC are I remember why

by Anonymousreply 61June 28, 2019 2:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 69June 28, 2019 2:32 AM

Democrats need to stop using the term gun control. Democrats have been saying that since I was a child. They need to find a better language. Gay marriage got rebranded into Marriage Equality because it sounded like it included everyone and was non-threatening.

by Anonymousreply 70June 28, 2019 2:32 AM

I can imagine Liz Warren sitting back with her beer enjoying this

by Anonymousreply 79June 28, 2019 2:33 AM

I'm sorry but putting Marianne Williamson on the debate stage was foolish. She was like your drunk old aunt at a party.

by Anonymousreply 80June 28, 2019 2:33 AM

Biden's flailing. Not addressing the question.

Seems like a decent fellow. But had his time in the sun.

by Anonymousreply 182June 28, 2019 2:50 AM

Marianne is in the audience now, praying over people and speaking in tongues

by Anonymousreply 183June 28, 2019 2:50 AM

She may not have brought Biden down, R178, but I'm pretty sure she brought herself up, which is what she needed to remain competitive.

by Anonymousreply 184June 28, 2019 2:50 AM

The crazy lady is talking again!

by Anonymousreply 185June 28, 2019 2:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 187June 28, 2019 2:51 AM

the anti-Kamala loon in this thread is flailing. Try your hardest to insult her but she did well tonight not perfect but very well

by Anonymousreply 188June 28, 2019 2:51 AM

I don't want to see Williamson, Hickenlooper, Yang in the next Debate.

Beto, Ryan and gabbard need to go from the first one.

Harris didn't need to bring Biden down, everyone chipped some paint off him. He's a dinosaur, a vain silly man and a creepy misogynist.

Harris threw Biden off his game

by Anonymousreply 192June 28, 2019 2:51 AM

Nate Silver's analysis of last night's debate numbers:

cannot believe again she is 66

by Anonymousreply 195June 28, 2019 2:52 AM

Trump and the GOP PACs that run attack ads have all the footage they need thanks to Marianne. That love speech. SMH

Gillibrand is trying to be the most pro-woman candidate. I'm curious what the reaction will be. She never had THE MOMENT tonight

by Anonymousreply 207June 28, 2019 2:53 AM

Who likes Chuck Todd?

Why is he still around?

He's beyond inadequate. He's incompetent, arrogant and unattractive in his exchanges and engagements.

His Marianne dismissal was completely uncalled for.

And that his parents told him to be quiet about it when he was growing up

Biden getting pissy as fuck was moment number two. Kamala trying to get dirty. Mmm mmm gurl.

Tracy Flick needs to shut the fuck up even though I agree with just about everything she said.

Pete looking like he wanted to kill the derpy turd was the most sexually arousing moment in politics.

And Bernie is fucking crazy and his fan brigade lost us the election and live in a delusional fantasyland.

by Anonymousreply 219June 28, 2019 2:55 AM

Gillibrand first up on MSNBC spin room

I would NEVER want to be near Chris Matthews with all that spitting and burping he does what the FUCK does he eat

by Anonymousreply 338June 28, 2019 3:21 AM

When Pete gets that look going, I know I’m in for a hot night! Thank God I packed the supersized lube.

by Anonymousreply 339June 28, 2019 3:21 AM

Kamala disappointed me. She seemed like a Trump, already lying about her opponents. We have had enough of that. I hate the slander.

by Anonymousreply 340June 28, 2019 3:23 AM

Maybe Pete’s look wasn’t hatred, but “I really want to shove my big dick in your big mouth.”

by Anonymousreply 341June 28, 2019 3:23 AM

Takeaway from both nights:

Warren, Biden, Sanders, Harris, and Buttigieg will remain as front-runners for the nomination.

Booker and Castro will get a second look from many of the voters.

O'Rourke probably fared the worst of the well-known candidates.

I don't see anyone else really breaking through.

Politico declaring Kamala the winner

by Anonymousreply 343June 28, 2019 3:23 AM

Biden was attacked by harpies, and made it out alive. Trust me, in the centrist and left of center world he did well. This is not to say that others didn't score points with progressives, as well.

by Anonymousreply 344June 28, 2019 3:24 AM

She didn’t lie about anyone, r340. You’re the liar. You clearly can’t stand that she won the night.

by Anonymousreply 345June 28, 2019 3:24 AM

Agree r332. If you had to pick a winner, Kamala Harris had the best performance out of both nights of the debate.

But too much of DL is too racist and misogynistic to admit it.

by Anonymousreply 346June 28, 2019 3:24 AM

Biden misspoke last week. Not sure why some of you can't see that. Does he mean well? yes but he's out of touch with some answers. Kamala exposed that effectively

Breaking news - Marianne was once Laura Dern’s roommate

by Anonymousreply 355June 28, 2019 3:27 AM

When there are another hundred or so debates to go, it is not important to claim victors.

It is the losers who decide not to continue who decide who the winners are.

by Anonymousreply 356June 28, 2019 3:28 AM

Harris did well and will kick Trump’s ass.

Who did you see who could beat Trump ?

by Anonymousreply 357June 28, 2019 3:28 AM

I've always liked Kamala and she did FANTASTIC tonight! Love her!

Pete held his own well, Biden did "good enough."

Swalwell was NOT good. He came across like a brat.

I HOPE that everyone still hate Gillibrand. "WOMEN!!" Such a tool.

Kamala's attack on Biden was fierce--it may have lacked a little in substance, it may have been slightly unfair, but this is politics baby and she did GREAT!

by Anonymousreply 358June 28, 2019 3:29 AM

Tonight's debate made last night look like amateur hour. Besides Warren, everyone from last night should go home.

by Anonymousreply 364June 28, 2019 3:30 AM

Gillibrand is like this year’s Hillary. She’s perfectly competent... but so shrill and unlikeable. Everyone just hates her.

I'm black and far, far from sexist or racist but she comes across as unfriendly. I'm visiting my 70 year old black mother, who has voted in every election since she could vote. by Anonymousreply 366June 28, 2019 3:31 AM

[quote]Has the DNC said what the requirements are to place into the July 30/31 debates in Detroit?

Yes, they're identical to the first debate. So we will likely see all of these candidates again. The third round is where they tighten the requirements.

by Anonymousreply 367June 28, 2019 3:31 AM

Who's the freak who just discovered who Marianne Williamson is? She's a lot more famous than Pete Butthowdy.

While Trump cowers from strong women in a setting where they can lay hands on him or in a setting like the White House, he's not going to worry about any of the Democratic candidates when it comes to the debates. He's too damn stupid to know how stupid he is. And the bar is set so low for him by the national media that they'll praise him for just about anything he does.

He will likely lose the debates, as decided by the majority of those polled, but his supporters won't give a shit. Frankly, I doubt the eventual debates between Trump and the Democratic candidate will move the needle at all.

I love Marianne and her steadfast 90s brand of metaphysical idealism and her determined chutzpah that she can somehow interject it into today's politics. She may be kind of loopy, but she can also be quite lucid and spot on in her assessments at times. She hasn't a shot in hell at being president, but it's cool that she actually made it to a debate stage.

by Anonymousreply 389June 28, 2019 3:45 AM

r402 I'm watching it too and she is good. I hope she doesn't linger too long on the 'school bussing' thing though. No matter how relevant you may or may not consider it, it WILL get old fast, and does distract us from the goal. She drew blood on Biden with it, it served it's purpose. Now move on.

Still a big Kamala fan though. I'm so glad she nailed it tonight.

by Anonymousreply 404June 28, 2019 3:55 AM

I'm amazed anyone would say Biden won... the pundits are screaming he fatally fucked up (on CNN anyway.). He's got to have a think through about how to message his record. Much of it made sense - AT THE TIME. Some talking head rightly observed one of Joe's problems is he's of a political generation where saying you're sorry is fatal.

Kamala is doin' that annoyin' Hillar thing to show she's folksier than her outfits...and droppin' her gs.

I know a lot of people don't like Joe for lots of reasons but I keep looking at the polls... the majority of the Democrats aren't very liberal... about 19% identify as very liberal. Whether it's Joe or not, it will be very bad for us if the nominee is too far left. This is a conservative, ill educated, fearful, football obsessed nation. It Is not ready for urban progressivism. It just isn't. The wrong candidate will hand the election to Trump.

by Anonymousreply 405June 28, 2019 3:56 AM

[quote]Beto was chopped down the worst of any of the top tier candidates. As DL would say "his collapse is complete". He has NO chance at being a serious contender

Agree. Beto is the de facto loser of the first round of debates. It was his chance to break out, but he just landed himself some bad headlines and crippled his chances to be a serious contender, which he had the potential to be.

by Anonymousreply 409June 28, 2019 3:58 AM

It was a good blow but yeah, so obviously calculated. "And that little girl was me.:" Of course its fucking was.

She's a great prosecutor and a killer debater... but that doesn't make a great candidate.

by Anonymousreply 411June 28, 2019 4:00 AM

Beto was a flash in the pan. He did an awesome job trying to take down Cruze but one viral moment and a road trip across Texas doesn't make you a credible candidate for president. He's too Hamlet.

by Anonymousreply 412June 28, 2019 4:00 AM

Pete's answer about the police shooting was a masterclass for Biden about how to handle the tough questions where the ground beneath you ions't solid.

by Anonymousreply 413June 28, 2019 4:02 AM

[quote]How do you feel Pete will do with Black voters going forward?

For me personally, I think most consistent black voters are pragmatists. (The black millenials on Twitter are not your typical black voter.) IMO, they are going to vote based on what they know and who they think can take out Trump. They aren't going to move away from Biden until another candidate gives them reason to believe they can win the general election, as we saw in 08. I love Pete and I want to live in a world where Pete is President, but, like many others, I don't think Pete can take out Trump. But, if Pete begins to show more strength and gain more support from others, his black support would certainly grow.

by Anonymousreply 414June 28, 2019 4:03 AM

Pete's team is brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 419June 28, 2019 4:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 424June 28, 2019 4:09 AM

[quote]How do you feel Pete will do with Black voters going forward?

I don't think we will ever see it in the numbers. But, here's two things that Mayor Pete is doing, in my opinion.... He's advancing how gays are being viewed by everyone. Now, this includes Black people who define themselves as being very religious. He's making them think about their religious views and how the religious leaders are supporting Trump. There is a mismatch here. I think that many black people are taking to Mayor Pete more than they might be taking to Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 425June 28, 2019 4:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 433June 28, 2019 4:15 AM

r417 the Lipstick Alley crowed pointed this out during that ill-advised "discussion" with protesters. He, for whatever reason, doesn't take criticism well. I believe he worked very hard to create a specific image for him, another glass closet, as a tough person but he appears to have deep insecurities, which is why he always looks pissed when challenged. You can't wear those emotions on a national debate stage.

I felt his answer started fine, but he can't answer why the number of black police officers in his city remains so disproportionate low compared to the community. He works very hard to avoid criticizing his police force which is why these issues have continued without much progress. We know he started his mayoral career with a racial controversy after firing the police chief. I get his trepidation, but I am shocked how unprepared he was to defend his own record. I'd say put him in a cabinet position, because he obviously wants out of South Bend.

His staff is extremely out of touch with racial issues and need to wake the fuck up, because he will be asked this again in the next debate. Once he hits the south, he can't afford to dance around that question.

by Anonymousreply 438June 28, 2019 4:17 AM

Huge thanks to Poll Troll, one of my favorite posters! When you have time, please give us your analysis of both nights.

Harris' background as a prosecutor gives her the expertise to undo a lot of damage Trump has done in the judiciary. She emerged with some solid moments and memorable sound-bites, but will America buy it? Misogyny is alive and well, as unfair as that is. I'm not convinced Caucasians and, to be blunt, Caucasian women, will support her.

He may be the youngest candidate, but Buttigeig's calm, cool, collected demeanor may be the mature anecdote to Trump that resonates with many 'on-the-fence' Americans.

As Democrats, sometimes we take the 'inclusivity' thing too far, and tonight was a prime example. Williamson and Yang, in different ways, were an embarrassment and detracted from the viable candidates. Sure, they provided comedic relief we'll be joking about for years, but at what price? If we're going to beat Trump we have to appeal to moderate, middle-of-the-road Americans, not pander to the extremes.

Both nights were way more fun watching while reading the comments each of you made. Well done, DL!

by Anonymousreply 439June 28, 2019 4:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 440June 28, 2019 4:20 AM

r440 I missed it, what did Kamala lie about?

by Anonymousreply 441June 28, 2019 4:21 AM

R440 keep trying with your false narratives because no one is believing you. Kamala did not lie. She set Biden straight and most people realize that. You're too biased to admit it of course

by Anonymousreply 442June 28, 2019 4:22 AM

Moments after her little girl moment, her team tweets a picture of the little girl on Twitter.

So that wasn't planned at all.

by Anonymousreply 443June 28, 2019 4:23 AM

At this point I could see a Biden/Harris doing quite well. Kamala would destroy Pence on a one on one debate but she would be fierce in the campaign trail going after Trump. She's almost like a Sarah Palin in the sense that Palin was able to motivate the crowds--her problem was that she was dumb and she let her popularity over take her.

[quote]Harris' background as a prosecutor gives her the expertise to undo a lot of damage Trump has done in the judiciary.

And, that's why she would make a perfect help mate to Biden. But, then there is Joe Biden....

by Anonymousreply 444June 28, 2019 4:24 AM

If Biden wins the nomination, he won't go anywhere near her after that. She kinda cut the ground out from under herself with Biden, because she's created an unanswerable question if she was part of a ticket.... but she's obviously in it for the win or nothing.

by Anonymousreply 445June 28, 2019 4:26 AM

To me, it doesn't fucking matter if Kamala lied about anything! Trump lies six times before breakfast and he's the president. Kamala can beat him. Can others beat him, probably, but tonight Kamala proved she can play in the top tier.

by Anonymousreply 449June 28, 2019 4:29 AM

Harris did very well, probably the best of the bunch, but I doubt it played as well in the critical swing states as it did on DL and on Twitter. Obama smartly knew when he ran in 2008 and 2012 that he couldn't come across as too angry or "too black." He knew how to play it "safe" and win the hearts of voters in overwhelmingly white states like Iowa. I'm not sure that Harris has the same appeal or skill. If she wants to appeal to the heartland, she needs to channel more of the economic populism of candidates like Warren and less of the angry black woman fighting for social justice. It really is all about the economy, stupid. And economic issues don't seem to be Harris' forte.

by Anonymousreply 450June 28, 2019 4:30 AM

Harris is going to be this cycles Bernie Sanders.

Who is she to condescend and bash someone on when they chose to come out.

by Anonymousreply 453June 28, 2019 4:35 AM

Kamala lied about Biden, she said he praised segregationist Senators...he did not, he had said he hated them but she completely ignored that fact. I had nothing against Kamala but honestly, I have had enough slander from Trump over the last two years, I will continue to speak out against Kamala if she lies about the other candidates.

All said they are nowhere near ready to commit to a candidate.

Some hard truths about Biden from Daniel Dale:

[quote]Biden's claim tonight that he only opposed federally mandated busing and did not generally oppose "busing in America" was a flagrant misrepresentation of his position in the '70s and '80s. He'd made crystal clear he opposed busing as a concept, as a matter of principle.

[quote]Biden's remarks on busing in the 1970s were generally very unequivocal -- "I oppose busing. It's an asinine concept." "A bankrupt concept." "Busing does not work." He expressed pride for making anti-busing sentiment "respectable" among liberals.

[quote]As recently re-reported by WaPo, Biden said things like this about busing: “What it says is, ‘In order for your child with curly black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin to be able to learn anything, he needs to sit next to my blond-haired, blue-eyed son.’ That’s racist!"

by Anonymousreply 465June 28, 2019 4:43 AM

Harris won by 65 %, with Pete a distant second with 12% & Biden at 7%. Of course people aren't ready to commit, but why refute what is clear to most people? Last night was a great night for Warren and a good night for Castro.

Tonight there is only one standout, one winner, one person everyone is talking about, and it is Kamala Harris.

Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg spoke more words tonight than their standing in the polls might suggest:

by Anonymousreply 481June 28, 2019 4:58 AM

“As the only,” Senator Kamala Harris interjected during the second Democratic debate, in Miami, “as the only black person onstage, I would like to speak on the issue of race.” She directed her attention at Joe Biden. The former vice president’s record on civil rights—and his fond remembrances of segregationist senators—has recently faced a wave of scrutiny. He’s argued that his ability to work with those he disagrees with is a mark of civility, but the former prosecutor was prepared to challenge him. She wanted to address a particular part of his record.

“You also worked with them to oppose busing,” she said. “And you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.” Her team tweeted a photo of her when she was in school with the line “That little girl was me."

Biden stood, staring into the applauding audience, before objecting that Harris had presented a “mischaracterization” of his position on race and busing. “What I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education,” he said. It wasn’t a defense that helped.

The confrontation captured an evolution—of the Democratic Party, of the country—that has taken place within Biden’s lifetime. Harris reminded viewers that this was all in her lifetime, too, and how different a tale. There the two were, staring at each other, their personal stories inextricably bound up in the bigger American story.

Biden tried to defend himself before relenting to the clock. “Anyway,” Biden said, “my time is up.” Indeed it was.

ADAM HARRIS

The biggest winners of the debates were Kamala and Castro. They both moved up to the top tier because of their debate performances. Kamala actually having a good shot of winning the whole thing, and Castro moving into the Top 3 of potential VP candidates. Booker also did well.

I'm interested to see if Biden and Warren remain stable, or actually slip in the polls.

I thought Kirsten Gillibrand did well tonight, but she was so overshadowed by Kamala that it probably won't make a difference. It's a shame she wasn't in the first debate.

by Anonymousreply 483June 28, 2019 4:59 AM

Kamala won tonight. To me Biden comes off as thinking he already has the nomination. I was put off by his staying on the stage instead of coming to the floor to mingle with the audience after the debate.

Risky strategy by Harris to make herself the news of the night by coming for the front-runner but she pulled it off with precision and steel in her spine. She put Biden into a defensive crouch. Excited for more.

Based on early numbers from 538 & Morning Consult, Warren appears to have gained since last night, but it will take several days for more in-depth polling to come out.

As for Biden, as Harry Enten said tonight, CNN's polling has shown Biden's numbers with Black voters holding up until now, so the days after tonight will be the big test for him.

[quote] I don't understand the bussing issue?

Harris knows Biden. It was her opportunity to destroy any goodwill Biden might have with black voters because of his association with Obama: (1) Comma-la wanted all black viewers to know that Biden is an old white dude who OPPOSED bussing like all other racist old white dudes, so he doesn't deserve black support. (2) she wanted us to see that Biden lacks empathy, any facility for introspection and the ability to be contrite for his past racism. (3) she wanted us to witness how angry, harsh and unfeeling he is toward a BLACK woman who was aggrieved by racism. He was completely dismissive of her, and she wanted black people (particularly women) to see it.

In this regard, she scored some points tonight and Biden knows it.

It will be Harris and some Dem governor. You can't have a multiracial woman and a gay man (even a white one) on the same ticket. The country would have an epileptic seizure. We take incremental change, hence half-black non-threatening Obama. Kamala and some older white governor, same formula with Warren. Kamala checks two social justice boxes as it is.

I knew she would kill it on a debate stage. The DNC is going to regret the 2 debate formula in July because people will now want to see tonight's line up with Warren. It's become a battle of the laddies. You will see Biden continue to lead as Warren take s a hit and Harris comes in 3rd/4th. Pete will go to 6th, Beto will somehow keep supporters, but fall to Booker's level.

In retrospect, this is going to be viewed as a dumb move by Kamala Harris. She just blew up the only sure-shot Democratic ticket for the sake of, what, a few 24-hour news cycles?

And for no good reason: She was performing beautifully in this debate until that moment. As others have pointed out, busing is a dumb hill to die (or kill) on: It has always been controversial and unpopular with all segments of the population.

He already had ZERO chance of getting minority votes and this hurt him even more. He would be poison as the Democrat presidential or VP candidate. I’d love to see a high-ranking gay in the administration but he has screwed himself.

by Anonymousreply 547June 28, 2019 6:02 AM

Agree with R546. Hillary's campaign was too arrogant and irrational.

And Kamala needed to go for broke tonight. And she won. That's how a political fight played out in real life, girls. Hillary should have done the same to Bernie 3 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 548June 28, 2019 6:07 AM

Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (a Dem) on CNN just now: "The busing issue is 40 years old. And Biden's point, then, was that you have to build up schools where children are and live. You see it in his education plan now – he's tripling funding. I'm not a surrogate for Joe Biden. All I'm saying is, we'll see how a 40-year-old issue plays out when the polls come through."

It seems like the strategy by Harris and Swalwell was to paint Biden and Pete as racist (thus Pete's death stare). Which is hardly the case for either one, and a real shitty thing to pull on a fellow democrat knowing that this shit will be reused by Republicans in the General.

by Anonymousreply 551June 28, 2019 6:11 AM

We learned nothing from Bernie's protracted, futile character assassination of Hillary in the 2016 primary.

Why make the Repugs think up their own attacks against Democrats when we'll just cook them up ourselves and hand them over?

by Anonymousreply 552June 28, 2019 6:13 AM

[quote]a real shitty thing to pull on a fellow democrat knowing that this shit will be reused by Republicans in the General.

And they didn't know this shit? Better used this shit right here right now than in October 2020.

by Anonymousreply 553June 28, 2019 6:14 AM

[quote] People who sat out of the 2016 election in PA, MI and WI were mostly black.... So Uncle Joe wouldn't make much impact there anyway. Meanwhile, Kamala is black (black votes) and tough on crime (white votes), so she really doesn't need him.

True. Biden without Harris is a rerun of HRC in 2016. He needs her. His campaign knows his support among black voters is no more significant than HRC's was in 2016.

by Anonymousreply 554June 28, 2019 6:16 AM

Kamala started her statement saying that she didn't think Biden was a racist. She was calling out the pain that was caused by his policy position for people of color. It's completely different then calling him a racist.

by Anonymousreply 555June 28, 2019 6:17 AM

[quote]I'm black and far, far from sexist or racist but she comes across as unfriendly. I'm visiting my 70 year old black mother, who has voted in every election since she could vote. We watched the election together and she asked why does Kamala always come across as so angry. She still likes Biden and now she likes Pete.

Hahaha haha! Dude you're fooling no one. What a liar. HaHa!

by Anonymousreply 556June 28, 2019 6:18 AM

When there were only two candidates, it was really stupid to go for the jugular of each other. But when there are 20, you need to cull the senile and the inept.

by Anonymousreply 557June 28, 2019 6:19 AM

Unfortunately, R555, that distinction is already totally lost, even on the journalists and commentators who are covering the debate.

by Anonymousreply 558June 28, 2019 6:19 AM

[R43], I am deducting points from Kamala's team (and others) for tweeting that there was a little girl who was "bussed" to school when she was "bused." Bussed = kissed, which Biden doesn't have a history of opposing.

[R250], I saw Williamson and Hickenlooper make a very quick exit from the stage -- I think Hickenlooper even tripped over his own feet he was in such a hurry -- but Biden stayed, with Mayor Pete and others approaching him to shake hands. He then spent a considerable amount of time talking to and taking pictures with audience members from up there.

Kirsten's caterwauling is a real turn off. That and all the pandering for women with the Al Franken episode has sunk her boat for me.

Also not getting great vibes from "Man of the People" Joe. Has he been in the game so long that he's lost the touch refusing to answer press questions, mingle with the regular folk and rent homes for 20,000USD/month? It seems like people think he's the "safe" candidate because he's from the past. Newsflash! Despite cultural nostalgia for it, falling back on the past many SERIOUSLY wound this country. Following Trump/McConnell, there's no going back to "the way things were".

Bold, dynamism and yet paradoxically calm steering may be necessary for what lies ahead.

Although Marianne has NO chance for the presidency, props for her expanding the discussion, withstanding the NZ joke.

Yang, also.

Kamala may appear slick, but seems calculated with political incisiveness. Could see her replacing Barr; but not as Pres.

Pete has potential; but see many hurdles involving youth, big government experience, his personal preferences and minority vote.

Appreciate Beto's and Bernie's heartfelt passion. But don't see either capable of handling the helm as pres.

So far, Warren seems to have the alchemy of qualities which may be able to navigate new and treacherous waters: especially with the courts/congress/government imbued with characters of questionable ethics. Is the USA forward thinking enough to elect its first woman?

Inslee, though trailing, may have potential.

Bennett?

Sense we need a strong, stable guide who is familar with the system, but has fresh options. We're at a fulcrum point in this county's history. This may be one of the most important elections ever as we dismantle a withering, corrupt system and transform it.

A dream team for this transformation could involve most all the players in various roles by acknowledging and utilizing their strengths e.g.

Castro/Beto - immigration

Booker - housing

Joe and Bernie - advisory roles

Pete/Tulsi - foreign service

Yang - tech/business

Even Marianne for (Kuchinch's idea of) a Department of Peace and Diplomacy. As long as she leaves the flat jokes aside, could see her working in NZ with her "girlfriend", Jacinda!

Appreciate last night's camradarie. Not sure about tonight's food fight. Ha.

by Anonymousreply 560June 28, 2019 6:22 AM

No to Tulsi, R560.

She used to work for an anti-gay organization.

She does not deserve a position.

by Anonymousreply 561June 28, 2019 6:26 AM

Kamala is so smart, she connects everything with "working common people" because likely voters don't care for immigrants, for debt-ridden students nor for trans. I know this is a harsh reality for many progressive liberals. Just win the election on issues people really care, and then you can tackle progressive issues thereafter.

by Anonymousreply 562June 28, 2019 6:28 AM

Apart from Uncle Joe and Bernie, Michael Bennet, John Hickenlooper, Kirsten Gillibrand, Marianne Williamson, Andrew Yang -- bumbling fools, please stop embarrasing yourself and families and please go home.

Kamala has the energy and stamina for the long game. Hillary has brains, not stamina.

by Anonymousreply 565June 28, 2019 7:30 AM

r342, I thought Castro broke through. I never gave him a second look but now I'm interested in hearing what he has to say.

[qiote]the majority of the Democrats aren't very liberal... about 19% identify as very liberal. Whether it's Joe or not, it will be very bad for us if the nominee is too far left.

I think many voters will find Kamala to be a good compromise between very-moderate Joe Biden and very-liberal Elizabeth Warren.

by Anonymousreply 571June 28, 2019 8:50 AM

Kamala had to twist the truth before she could win. No thanks. Biden got into politics because he hated the racism he saw in our country, now vicious liars make him seem like the leader of the kKk.

It was gross. Most everyone was just really angry and negative. Talking over each other. Gillibrand was among the worst.

by Anonymousreply 574June 28, 2019 9:28 AM

Totally besides the point, but Kamala is a great looking woman. 54 years old, so incredibly accomplished and still in the prime of her life. I would love to see her be the Nominee and next president. Don't give me a black woman can't ever get elected crap. Kamala's background, family and personal history, her incredible resume and supporters tick ALL the boxes. The only woman who couldn't get elected president was Hillary Clinton. Twice. Hillary AND Obama are both bigger fans of Kamala than they are of OLD MAN RIVER JOE.

by Anonymousreply 575June 28, 2019 9:31 AM

So you keep saying, over and over and over again, r572. You're the one who keeps twisting the truth, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 576June 28, 2019 9:36 AM

I believe Marianne Williamson has good intentions but there were times during the debate when I felt like a resurrected Gilda Radner was on stage doing a new character...the stoned spiritual guru with a good blow out running for President.

by Anonymousreply 577June 28, 2019 9:39 AM

Mayor Pete killed it! -- calm, measured, composed, seamless answers to everything.

by Anonymousreply 578June 28, 2019 9:41 AM

So free health care for undocumented migrants? Wow, generous.

by Anonymousreply 579June 28, 2019 9:41 AM

The UK can do it, why can't the USA?

GPs vote to stop charging overseas NHS patients - and call it racist

DOCTORS have voted to stop billing overseas patients for NHS treatments - but those who oppose the move argue opening the NHS free to foreigners is a stretch on already cash-strapped resources.

Yang's mic was shut off. I understand his website has a lot of info on what he wants to do and he is very close to having enough funds to be in the next debate.

The book hawker who is running so she can become known for her books and make more sales got more questions than Yang.

I find it very disappointing that so many are ready to write someone off when they haven't even been heard.

The book hawker and Kirsten need to go. They are both top notch bitches.

Why can't politicians follow the rules? why do they have to shout over each other? what does that even accomplish?

by Anonymousreply 586June 28, 2019 11:02 AM

I forgot to add that MSNBC is owned by Comcast who just happens to be supporting Biden. I am sick of these news stations. There is no news anymore it's just every assholes opinion. If a station is holding a debate they should not be allowed to support anyone. News stations have become so biased and it is at the point where is getting hard to trust them because they are always pushing their own agenda.

by Anonymousreply 587June 28, 2019 11:06 AM

R586, yeah, NBC News was despicable for turning off Yang's mic. CNN will probably do the same in July. He'll need to get used to yelling.

by Anonymousreply 588June 28, 2019 11:06 AM

[quote]So free health care for undocumented migrants? Wow, generous.

They already have health care. If an undocumented immigrant enters emergency they must be treated. Talk to Ronald Reagan....

Oh thanks for letting me know, r589. It's indeed generous. America is filthy rich.

At least some of america . .

by Anonymousreply 591June 28, 2019 11:18 AM

[quote] It's indeed generous.

You're welcome, R590. But, I don't know if I would call it generous but I think more humane is more appropriate. But, that's one of the issues of why our healthcare is sooooo expensive. You have far too uninsured many (and that's way more than undocumented workers) who have to resort to the emergency room.

[quote]America is filthy rich.

And yet, over 3/4's of the rest of the world has universal healthcare for their citizens. Have lower healthcare costs. Now, many have longer life expectancy. Bernie's right here. This doesn't make sense

by Anonymousreply 592June 28, 2019 11:21 AM

I'm amused anyone thinks the mythical debate with Trump will change anything.

The country won't turn on that. It knows who he is. I know you're hungry for the lily pond but it will mean fuck all.

The change, if any, will come down to platform and belief a resonant candidate will deliver better.

Whether Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren or Mayor Pete or Uncle Joe can wipe the floor with the fool in the White House doesn't much matter. Good theater but little else.

The media has a hard on this morning because they got a kill moment. We're all falling into the same traps again.

BRAVO!!! Standing ovation!!! There are too many caught up with the entertainment rather than the substance. Look... Kamala, had a GREAT night--however, if someone pounces on her team having a whole marketing campaign ready 30 seconds after having a good line, it's going to blow up. That was just stupid!

Biden held his own but he should be on all of these morning talk shows. If it grows that he's cranky, won't listen to staff, etc and that holds... he's done.

Mayor Pete had a good night but I saw his inexperience rear his head.

Bernie should be upset. He's getting lost in all of this.

Warren should be thankful that she got that first night! The country got to see HER.

Some others too. But, I thought last night's debate wasn't good. It just caused more campaigns to think of their strategic position. I think the voters lost last night.

by Anonymousreply 594June 28, 2019 11:30 AM

the voters lose every night

by Anonymousreply 595June 28, 2019 11:34 AM

Once again the media is busy electing the next president, which is about as good for the country as the electoral college.

Donald J. Trump Verified account @realDonaldTrump

I am in Japan at the G-20, representing our Country well, but I heard it was not a good day for Sleepy Joe or Crazy Bernie. One is exhausted, the other is nuts - so what’s the big deal?

This is actually one of the more effective tweets by Trump. He's hammering Joe already and trying to stick him with a narrative. Biden's team isn't serving him well. Biden NEEDED to be on "Morning Joe" this morning! They already got Mayor Peter, Kamala, amd Gillibrand (who is much better in interviews than a debate)

by Anonymousreply 597June 28, 2019 11:36 AM

you really can't have a debate with all 10 people talking over each other. All mics should be shut off except for the person being asked a question. Then they should be shut off when their time is up. Every person should be asked the same question and it should go down the line. This way we may actually learn something.
