I heard the following account of Zack MacLeod from Jane Austin's brother, Stephen:

Well, the Allens, my wealthier neighbors, invited me to spend the winter season at Bath. Although I prefer to spend my time reading the novels of Ann Radcliffe, I was persuaded to partake of such delights as the daily promenades and evening balls in the gathering spaces of that delightful town. As we both fumbled with the buttons of our breeches, Mr. MacLeod inquired as to whether I had a sheepskin. Alas! I hadn't one. So rather than play back gammon, we were content to bagpipe each other.

Why is everyone being so hard on Zack? He seems like a nice, well-mannered young man who isn't out to "get" anything from anyone. Eccentric, yes, but in a nice way that's not offensive to anyone. I admire him for following through with what he really likes to do.
