Paul Mercurio from "Strictly Ballroom." So stunning in that movie but his looks faded quickly. Even in "Exit To Eden" I thought he was puffy looking. Maybe it's an Aussie thing to lose your looks earlier than most (many Australian men mentioned already.)

by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 20, 2019 6:36 AM |
R32 - I was always amazed at how quickly Mercurio lots his looks and became puffy and bloated - till I met a guy...
He too had been a young dancer at the Sydney Dance Company - around the time of Mercurio or soon after - and the framed photos he had of himself from that time on the wall were amazing! Soooooo cute and hot and tight- bodied!
But when he was like that - he was full of young man hormones - and was effectively exercising 8-10 hours a day, five or six days a week. After his mid twenties - he left the company - started his own dance school interstate. And stopped exercising at that level. But he still ate as if he was working out 8-10 hours a day. With inevitable results. And it just got worse as the years went by, hard to believe it was the same guy.
Seen this happen with young Olympians and other professional athletes. when all the exercise stops -their appetites don't necessarily follow. Swimmers especially! (Cough - Ian Thorpe - cough!)
It's almost a form of abuse to train these young athletes and dancers and not include a post career plan that talks about changes to their metabolism, Etc. Lack of responsibility from the higher ups in charge!

by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 20, 2019 5:29 PM |
I second Leo D. Although I'd say he was still very good-looking in The Beach. What made him so unattractive in that movie were his mannerisms and facial expressions. It's almost like he was trying to make himself appear ugly. He REALLY lost his looks between The Aviator and The Departed. Due to heavy drinking and smoking I guess.
[quote] Maybe it's an Aussie thing to lose your looks earlier than most
It's probably all that sun they're exposed to down under. I noticed that Chris Hemsworth is already starting to look somewhat leathery. I still find him good-looking, but I wouldn't have thought that he's only 35. He seems to spend a lot of time at Australian beaches.

Well R72, most people weren't going to see the plays there back then. On one hand the camera makes people beautiful, on the other hand (with Matthew Bomer), he always stood out. He was also exceptionally kind to everyone back then and I think that's part of the reason he still looks great. I think that sort of thing keeps people looking good.

Tommy Lee Jones certainly aged, but never entirely lost his appeal for me - which had more to do with his voice and bodily presence. De Niro is somewhat the same.
I always thought Keith Gordon was more beautiful than either female lead in "Dressed to Kill". That didn't last long. Consistently good actor, though.

Sean Astin. I'm same age as him and used to wank to his teenie bopper mag layouts when I was like 15-16. Now I feel kinda bad and awkward admitting that because in retrospect we know that those mags and the boys in them were exploited by a bunch of evil pedophile closet case assholes. But now he looks like a fat, tired plumber and has since his 20s, so at least the evil pedophile closet case assholes lost interest and left him alone.

R96 For the longest time I thought he was Australian because he sounds like he has a slight Australian accent, so I was surprised when I learned he was born and raised in America.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers lost his preternatural beauty, understandably, quite young. He was still hot in his late 20's. But since then he's really wrecked himself.

Second Gerard Butler and Brendan Fraser. They both had sort of handsome but somewhat rugged he-man looks in their primes. Now they just look rugged. Also David James Elliot (of JAG fame). These alterations of looks with age are strange to me, because, like everyone else on DL, I'm 60 but still get mistaken for 25.....LOL
by Anonymous | reply 108 | July 11, 2019 7:20 PM |

[quote] Second Gerard Butler and Brendan Fraser. They both had sort of handsome but somewhat rugged he-man looks in their primes. Now they just look rugged.
Rugged would not be the word I'd use to describe either of them. Brendan was still relatively young when he began morphing into Rodney Dangerfield. Gerard was always more rugged than handsome, so he managed to hold onto his looks up until about seven years ago. Then, aging hit him fast and hard. He looks a good ten years older than his supposed 49 years. I remember reading a review of that movie he did with 50 Cent, and the writer described him as "looking like an angry Shar-Pei."

Kevin Zegers? Really? Last time I saw him, he was still incredibly handsome. What is he? Mid 30's by now at the latest? He just doesn't look like a barely legal twink anymore. Why does DL think men are only attractive until 25? That's so sad.
I'm my experience, men can still be attractive well into their 50s and 60s if they take care of themselves.
