I’ve noticed most elderly men who wear shorts have little to no leg hair. Lately I think my own has been thinning, and my husband is balding at his sock lines.
Is this a real thing?

It was all too real for me, starting in my 30s. I never wear shorts.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 18, 2019 1:16 AM |
Just wear the Nike Crew socks with your shorts like all the young blokes do. Nobody will be the wiser, OP.

I'm thirty and it's already started going in the back of my calves. Hate it.

I'm 56 and have lost it up to 2 inches above ankle. Must be related to a lifetime of socket? the rest of my legs are the same as ever, good thick hairy. So i wear socks even with shorts to hide. Now I admire young mens' hairy ankles!

socks

I guess I fall into the subcategory of guys who get hairier with age, because I never had any on my stomach and just had a stripe up my chest, but started hairing up a lot more around 45. Maybe I notice it because it's coarser, including on my legs. Also got the nose and ear hairs and the wayward eyebrow hairs. I live in a colder climate so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I want this now! My legs are too hairy. I’m going to wear long underwear every night now!
Maybe😉

I’m 60 and only experienced leg hair loss just above my ankles and lower calves where my dress socks would hit all these many years of “dressing for success.” For many years now, I wear my socks scrunched down around my ankles. I don’t want to experience any further leg hair loss.

How the heck does hair grow out of ears?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 18, 2019 1:26 AM |
Thank god for DL. I just noticed this as well in the last two weeks. I'm 39. Fuck this!!!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 18, 2019 1:26 AM |

I’m 54 and my legs are as hairy as they were 20 years ago, which is very hairy. Now if only I could say the same thing for my head hair.

Your hormones change when you get older—more estrogen and less testosterone. Yes, it’s real. Of course it is. My dad is 70 and looks like he slathers his legs in Nair.
I am 41, and I am really enjoying the physical effects of getting older just because it is so peculiar, like puberty all over again. I’m a weirdo, I know, but I find it humbling and I think it is SO interesting and funny in a way that we can look at anyone else and objectively understand what aging looks like, but when we witness it happening to us it feels like the world is short circuiting and something impossible is happening.

It is a rather cruel and weird part of aging that we lose hair in places we want to keep it, like the scalp or in OP's case the legs, while it begins to grow out of control in places we don't, like the ears, nose, and eyebrows.
I wonder why that is.

So when will leg hair transplants be available?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 18, 2019 1:43 AM |
My 40's.

You sound thoughtful, R15. Ever read Montaigne? He wrote about self-observation a lot. Are you a writer?
Sometime leg-hair loss indicates circulation problems.

My public hair is thinning, goddammit! I don’t dare trim it, but now some of it is coming in gray. I’m dyeing it with Just For Men. Yes. I know it’s meant for the hair on top of my head, and I use it. But now I use it on my pubes too.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 18, 2019 1:51 AM |
And the multitudes appreciate that, one is sure.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 18, 2019 1:54 AM |
Grey pubes is where I draw the line too. I’ve embraced my full head of grey, but dammit if I’ll have grandpa dick
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 18, 2019 1:55 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 18, 2019 1:58 AM |
Isn't it itchy, and not in a good way?

R20 I’m a writer, yeah.

I have bald ankles now (early-mid 50s) and the outsides of my lower legs have lost a lot of hair, but nowhere else. I suspect it's where I wear socks and where my legs rest when I cross my legs.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 18, 2019 2:08 AM |
I've not had a problem with reduced leg hair as I age. None of my sistren have, that I've noticed, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 18, 2019 2:11 AM |
At 50 lost all body hair due to two years of chemo. It grew back everywhere but only about half as thick as it was berfore
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 18, 2019 2:24 AM |
I'm Italian American only half and I am hairy ALL OVER. Little chance of it ever thinning out.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 18, 2019 2:31 AM |
Yes, r30, there’s been a string of gentlemen willing to fuck you just to keep those mitts off a keyboard. And of course you demurely turn each one down.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 18, 2019 3:05 AM |
I was pretty much bald from the knee down by 45, but until DataLounge I had no idea it was a thing, I just blamed it on a lifetime wearing socks.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 18, 2019 3:09 AM |
I'm 60 and my legs and arms are remarkably less hairy than they were in my 20's and 30's. The rest of my hair has diminished as well. The little triangle of hair between my shoulder blades that I used to shave after haircuts is long gone and my five o'clock shadow is now a 3-5 day shadow. I have minimal hair in my pits (and barely sweat there even at the gym). Luckily the hair on my head has thinned but shows no signs of going away. It's odd how some men seem to sprout hair everywhere possible as they age and others basically bald from the neck down.

My taint is growing a goatee so it can hug turds as they leave my body.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 18, 2019 3:56 AM |
My legs are as smooth as if I shaved them. I had very hairy legs until my 30s,by my 40s it was noticeably thinner,by my 50s,gone with the wind.My arm and chest hair are much thinner as well, but my pubes are still full (if a touch gray). Yep,I detest aging with every fiber of my 1980s plastic queens heart !
