I'm a neurologist. I see 2-3 OD cases in the ICU each week. Many of them are seen for brain death evaluation and to take off respiratory support.

[R4] what state are you in?

The economy is in the very good shape, people might just want to die while they are happy. Three top spots belong to Trump shithole states, so you can't really say they die of despair.
The study measured “drug poisoning deaths” in 2017, the last year for which full statewide data are available. Only Ohio and West Virginia had higher overdose death rates than Pennsylvania that year. All three states had more than twice the national rate of drug overdose deaths in 2017. Along with seven other states, including Delaware, the trio have seen overdose deaths increase threefold since 2005

The economy is in great shape for people at a certain level, not for everyone else.

It's all the ghosting.

Which states are the most shithole states?

Everything religious promised as well.

Agree with OP - this is what unfettered capitalism results in. Pointless desire for more stuff. And extreme poverty and extreme wealth. With the majority slaving away for the 1%. Radical redistribution of wealth via taxation - hell, even a return to mid century America taxation rates - is a start. Instead, we have trillions of tax cuts to corporations and the super rich. It’s grotesque. And completely logical that a lot of people just want to check out.

I don’t see a problem as long as they are Trump voters.

Buillshit unless you're wealthy

While black people always have a "we will overcome" attitude, whites have never envisioned a world where they would be struggling for jobs and food.
Thus, whites are driven to opioids, suicides, etc.
After the recession, Obama couldn't bring back the economy because capitalism took everyone's jobs to China. Trump promised them a better life, but even he can bring back the industrial sectors and retail is dying quickly too.

Life is shit for most people in poor health. Money has nothing to do with happiness. Less is more. If you don’t love yourself, what is the point?

Couldn’t it just be all the fentanyl?

When vast swaths of America can't come up with $400 in an emergency, how good could the economy really be?

Yesterday there was a thread about amputations from diabetes at an all time high. Today this news. 1.3 million people uninsured thanks to the republicans. On the up side, maybe the trumpers will die off.

I wonder what effect the coronavirus crisis /pandemic and its knock on effects has had on the suicide rate ,drug overdose rate and drug and alcohol abuse in the US?

R14 "Whites have never envisioned a world where they would be struggling for jobs and food"
Actually the vast majority of humans on the planet have always struggled for jobs and food, especially before the 20th century. But plenty of whites have struggled and gone hungry in this country and century, too. I guess you have never read a history book.

America's new motto - Too Much and Never Enough.
Your butt - not big enough, you need to have that of the Kardashians!
Your skin - not tan enough, you need more spray tan like Kylie Jenner!
Your cock - not big enough, you need to be like John Holmes,
Your teeth - not white enough, you need to be like Suze Orman!
Your rich - not rich enough, you have to be like Bernie Madoff at least!
Your face - not tight enough, you need to be like Cindy Jackson!
Your body - not thin enough, you need to be like Victoria Beckham!
No wonder people who fail these tests rather kill themselves than be "insufficient." The country is so fucked up to the nth degree. It's the collapse of the American Empire, all by themselves.
