What did Ian Somerhalder do to his face?

He was my number-one crush around the ‘Rules of Attraction’ era. He had the most beautiful face and stunning eyes and rosy cheeks, and he always has seemed like a good guy.

I don’t look at him and see evidence of surgeries or injections as I can easily see on other celebs’ faces. I really think he just has one of those faces that has evolved significantly since his youth and his features now have shifted in such a way that what once was beautiful in a youthful male kind of way is now a less remarkable older male face. A lot of people are beautiful in youth and then turn into less remarkable adults. Not everyone is Ryan Phillippe, and even he in his attempts to maintain his youthful beauty is suddenly starting to look alarmingly modified.

I agree that Somerhalder’s age is making him look more like a harsher-featured Rob Lowe and less like his youthful self.

One notable difference I see comparing old and recent photos side by side is that his face seems significantly broader than it did when he was young. People might want to suggest that that is due to cheek implants or filler or something, but I don’t think it is. He doesn’t appear plumped, just wider.

That’s something I notice in my own aging face at 41, really the one thing that makes me look unusual to myself instead of just like an aged version of young me. I see it in my family, too: we all seem to develop “potato heads” (think Carroll O’Connor) past middle age.

I think it must be a normal part of physical evolution as we age for the body, including the hesd, to spread laterally. As mentioned above, Ryan Phillippe gets a lot of credit for “not aging” (nowadays he is looking like he’s falling into Kenny Rogers territory with feminizing facial surgery), but one thing to look at side by side is how narrow his whole head used to be compared with now. That’s just a getting-older thing that can’t be blamed on surgery; no one gets their whole skull broadened.

He's just older in r6. But in OP's pic and the one I've linked, he clearly looks tightened with fewer creases and more stretched skin.

R8 OK, he does look plumper and softened there, which suggests fillers. His face was never naturally full like that even when he was young, and that’s a pretty dead giveaway. It’s probably a given too that he uses Botox. It’s Hollywood, after all, and he has always been cast as the sexy one.

I admire him for this. He seems like a decent guy, all things considered. His pinup years are behind him, which is inevitable. If what is left is a good human being, do we have to bitch about that?

As for Somerhalder, I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I find him MORE striking/interesting looking now. But looking at old pictures I agree that something appears to have happened that goes beyond the normal aging process. I can't really put my finger on it, but his face has an almost cat-like quality to it now that wasn't there when he was younger. And he looks suspiciously taut and smooth for a guy over 40.
