Trivia: After her memorable appearances as a blowsy cougar on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Family, Sheree North was offered the "replacement Flo" slot, and she turned it down.

She went on to get great reviews in I'm a Big Girl Now and an Emmy nomination for Archie Bunker's Place.

If she'd taken the Alice job, she would have been way more interesting than Belle or Jolene, who were both wastes of space. Nobody but nobody did "blowsy cougar" better than Sheree North.

Polly was asked to come back but the producers made the error of giving the invitation to Beth Howland to mail. And Beth kept it hidden for about a year before it was found.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't try an get Dorothy Lyman for the last season, since it would have been after the network Mama's Family had ended and before it started syndication. She would have fit it pretty well and might have reignited the show.

They didn't want her back because she had too many heavy-flo days, which fucked with the filming schedule.

Sheree North gained fame again as Kramer's mother on Seinfeld. But she was only featured on one episode. I wonder why they never used her in other episodes, especially since Jerry and George's parents were featured prominently on the show.

I'm bumping this thread with an observation... I've been watching reruns and I know it's set in Phoenix, but the feel of the show is so southern. So many of the guest stars, especially the men, are southern. I don't understand why they didn't set it in Texas or somewhere like that instead Arizona.

Polly probably found one of her pets with its head cut off on her back porch once contract renegotiation started up ... it could have been no one but Linda.

I like it but would havee enjoyed it much more with out fucking Alice, go figure.
