Accompanying herself on the piano on this rendition of “If Love Were All.” So elegant.
Duetting with Sarah Vaughan on “Body and Soul.” How dykey is this?

She was a genuine bulldagger. And one of the greatest singers of standards and jazz. Of all of those legendary ladies who started in the 1940s I think she transitioned most successfully into contemporary material. She never had any chart hits in the 60s or 70s but she was a skilled interpreter who could go with the flow.

So underrated still.

She sings the fuck out of “The Sound of Silence.”

Mannered. Eccentric phrasing and irritatingly living outside the beat at critical moments.

That’s called jazz, dear.

Thanks for sharing, OP. I’m a big jazz fan but don’t know a lot of vocal jazz outside of Nina, Ella, and Billie.

Jazz is probably my favorite genre, but jazz vocalists in particular. Carmen is up there with Billie, Ella, and Sarah Vaughan.
Nina Simone isn’t one of my most favorites, though I like her earlier material well enough.

Carmen rarely gets her due.
The Verve Remixed series has a wonderful version of “How Long Has This Been Going On”.
