Santino!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 10, 2019 2:58 AM |
Scandalous that Rosemary Harris and Terrence McNally get booted in favor of that shitty sketch with King Kong
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 10, 2019 2:59 AM |
Santino! Why do you have to be straight?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 10, 2019 2:59 AM |
Based on the performances tonight I was rooting for the Oklahoma actor.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 10, 2019 2:59 AM |
Damn, he talked fast. Was he auditioning for Matinee Harold Hill?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 10, 2019 2:59 AM |
Tootsie - The appropriation of the Trans community.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 10, 2019 3:00 AM |
So they’re really rushing through the last couple of awards after dragging this shit out for the last 3 hours?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 10, 2019 3:00 AM |
He was horrible, R4! He couldn't sing well enough.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 10, 2019 3:00 AM |
Howard Beale, Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels, Scout, Beetlejuice-- a trip down Hollywood memory lane. No original ideas any more?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 10, 2019 3:00 AM |
He's had some perky producer's mouth on his dick I'd imagine.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 10, 2019 3:00 AM |
R2,King Kong got a Tony. The Corden sketches didn't. They should have been booted.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 10, 2019 3:01 AM |
Ew she thanked God
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 10, 2019 3:01 AM |
So Tootsie and The Cher Show won lead actor Tonys. Wow.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 10, 2019 3:02 AM |
Did Santino dis Crazy Ex-Girlfriend about not doing things that don’t feed you as an actor?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 10, 2019 3:02 AM |
It kind of sucks that he won. I hope Tootsie at least doesn't also win.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 10, 2019 3:02 AM |
Now that you can see everything online The Tony Award show just doesn't seem all that anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 10, 2019 3:02 AM |
Did Stephanie tell Idina to suck it?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 10, 2019 3:02 AM |
awww, I like the Cher winner, she's sweet. So was the Anais book writer lady. Very classy but without shoving messages down our throats.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 10, 2019 3:02 AM |
HOW THE FUCK DID SHE WIN??? Did you see her in the Cher number??
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 10, 2019 3:03 AM |
Why wasn't Cher there?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 10, 2019 3:03 AM |
Damn that was so rehearsed, SJB.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 10, 2019 3:03 AM |
She hated the show
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 10, 2019 3:03 AM |
Josh Groban on the way. And he actually has WHITE teeth, not yellow.
Wonder why Cher hasn't weighed in much on the show period? Or did I just miss it (unlikely since I am a fan).
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 10, 2019 3:04 AM |
R19 I know.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 10, 2019 3:04 AM |
Oh, R22 answered my question. Why?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 10, 2019 3:04 AM |
My fucking live stream cut out. What'd she say to her husband?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 10, 2019 3:04 AM |
Sebastian is a cutie
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 10, 2019 3:04 AM |
SJB's hubbie Sebastian Arcelus is so hot!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 10, 2019 3:04 AM |
I actually heard earlier this evening that Cher was supposed to be here tonight. Perhaps that was wrong or something came up and she couldn't make it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 10, 2019 3:05 AM |
I'd still say Elaine May gave the best speech of the night (by far).
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 10, 2019 3:05 AM |
If you ever leave me I’m going with you, or something close to that.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 10, 2019 3:05 AM |
Bruins win!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 10, 2019 3:06 AM |
Neither Cher nor Idina is there.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 10, 2019 3:06 AM |
R26, she said “If you ever leave me, I’m going with you.”
Her husband is a regular on Madam Secretary.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 10, 2019 3:06 AM |
R19 People don't always win Tonys because they are the best in that role in that particular show. She's paid her dues and done good performances over the years. Plus I don't think the competition in that category was that stiff.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 10, 2019 3:06 AM |
[quote]Wonder why Cher hasn't weighed in much on the show period? Or did I just miss it (unlikely since I am a fan).
She performed with the cast on the Tonight Show. Isn't she a producer on the show as well?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 10, 2019 3:07 AM |
im gonna go see Oklahoma cause them men is hot..
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 10, 2019 3:07 AM |
Josh Groban is sexy!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 10, 2019 3:07 AM |
Honestly, R2, the King Kong puppet gave a much better performance than anything else tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 10, 2019 3:07 AM |
Sebastian is making ME stiff!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 10, 2019 3:07 AM |
How long until The Prom closes?

by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 10, 2019 3:08 AM |
Hadestown cleaned up.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 10, 2019 3:08 AM |
How soon will The Prom post a closing notice?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 10, 2019 3:08 AM |
Enough of Josh Groban, please go back to soft rock!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 10, 2019 3:08 AM |
Big Red is the Dorothy Michaels of the night. She should be Fay Wray in "King Kong".
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 10, 2019 3:08 AM |
The Prom - 0
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 10, 2019 3:09 AM |
Who is Lurch with the long hair and red dress?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 10, 2019 3:09 AM |
Hadestown really cleaned up tonight. Will be interested to see the final tally.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 10, 2019 3:09 AM |
Tootsie - 2
The Cher Show - 2
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 10, 2019 3:10 AM |

Big Red is Jordan Roth, son(?) of Daryl Roth, one of the biggest and richest producers in Broadway
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 10, 2019 3:11 AM |
That was fun everybody. Thanks for the streaming link whoever sent it.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 10, 2019 3:11 AM |
A tribute to Joe Bologna. Was he not in the In Memoriam segment?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 10, 2019 3:12 AM |
^^Jordan is also a producer of Hadestown
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 10, 2019 3:12 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 10, 2019 3:12 AM |
As always, this thread makes it worth watching. So many laughs with you guys. Take care. 💙
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 10, 2019 3:13 AM |
I am living for the uptight Mary brigade having twitter tantrums about Cranston’s Me Too joke, which I loved
by Anonymous | reply 63 | June 10, 2019 3:13 AM |
As always, it's been a pleasure posting with you all on this Tony Awards thread tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 10, 2019 3:13 AM |
He's straight R60
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 10, 2019 3:14 AM |
R58, he passed away in 2017.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 10, 2019 3:14 AM |
Great posts everyone! Next year has got to be better than this!

The opening was stirring and memorable.
We laughed. We cried.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 10, 2019 3:14 AM |
Thanks, R65.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 10, 2019 3:15 AM |
R72 (paraphrasing) It's about time an old straight white man gets a break.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 10, 2019 3:16 AM |
This is interesting, Mackie became the first person to win a Tony, while also appearing as a character in the same production!
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 10, 2019 3:16 AM |
SJBlock stole the line about going with her husband if he leaves her. Reneé (The Nanny) Taylor and her late husband, Joe Bologna, had a show with that title.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 10, 2019 3:17 AM |
R69 I've noticed a lot of celebrities and rich people have terrible teeth. Yellow, fillings, missing some. If not, they have the big fake ones.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 10, 2019 3:17 AM |
This should have been the closing number of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | June 10, 2019 3:18 AM |
R77 An actor without an original thought in their head? Nooooo...
by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 10, 2019 3:19 AM |
Any “egregious” omissions from the “In Memoriam”?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 10, 2019 3:19 AM |
Is Twitter really having a meltdown over Cranston's comment?
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 10, 2019 3:21 AM |
Any “egregious” omissions from the “In Memoriam”?
The Tony Awards have died. What is in its place is crap.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | June 10, 2019 3:21 AM |
Having a meltdown over Twitter's meltdowns is futile. Don't get in the dirt with them.
That being said, Cranston's straight white man bit was funny. The me too one was kind of unnecessary.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | June 10, 2019 3:24 AM |
I love Terrence McNally and was sorry to see him looking so frail. It was moving to watch him determined to speak even with that oxygen apparatus. Does he have emphysema?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 10, 2019 3:25 AM |
Twitter meltdown about Cranston appears to be a mix of positive and Trump related anger.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 10, 2019 3:25 AM |
what was the me too one?
by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 10, 2019 3:26 AM |
I would give a Tony to Reeve Carney's shoulders. Hot Cha Cha!!!
by Anonymous | reply 89 | June 10, 2019 3:26 AM |
You know Cher done good by Block and Mackie and I’m glad they won. It interesting that both lead actress and actor in a musical got the award for doing drag!
by Anonymous | reply 90 | June 10, 2019 3:27 AM |
Happy for Santino, feel bad for Brooks. Maybe another year.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | June 10, 2019 3:28 AM |
R91 another year for what?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | June 10, 2019 3:29 AM |
So did the King Kong people pay for that little scene? $100K? More?
by Anonymous | reply 93 | June 10, 2019 3:31 AM |
It was nice to see David Henry Hwang looking well tonight. He was the victim of a random stabbing in 2015.
Or maybe it was a FLOWER DRUM SONG purist.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | June 10, 2019 3:32 AM |
Apparently Cranston is the only person tonight to be winning his second Tony.
That is kind of amazing.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | June 10, 2019 3:33 AM |
Have the Truvada Dancers danced?
I just got home. I really want to see the Truvada Dancers dance.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | June 10, 2019 3:34 AM |
R92, I meant perhaps Brooks will still win at some point later in his career.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | June 10, 2019 3:35 AM |
The shoulders are nice, R89, but for me it's all about dat ass.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | June 10, 2019 3:36 AM |
Benjamin walker, what a dish.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | June 10, 2019 3:36 AM |
R94 that's the guy they cut to after Lucy Liu's speech. I knew he looked familiar!
by Anonymous | reply 100 | June 10, 2019 3:37 AM |
"This is a show about death!"
Really? Beetlejuice isn't a movie about death.
Is Beetlejuice the Musical as awful as it appears to be? Bummer.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 10, 2019 3:39 AM |
[QUOTE]So did the King Kong people pay for that little scene? $100K? More?
WHAT??? So the producers of the shows have to PAY to have a musical number on the Tony?
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 10, 2019 3:39 AM |
Why were the other Cher's not nominated?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | June 10, 2019 3:40 AM |
R102 I think so. I remember the producer for the Spring Awakening revival trying to raise money through fans so they could perform.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | June 10, 2019 3:41 AM |
If your show is not nominated, you can buy a number.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | June 10, 2019 3:42 AM |
Of course they have to pay. It's work not covered in the production contract. The costumes have to be moved to Radio City and back. A set for that one moment has to be manifested somehow. There is rehearsal time for the company and for the musicians. It goes on and on and on.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | June 10, 2019 3:43 AM |
I think even the nominated shows have to cough up money to cover the cost of putting on their number. Manhattan Theater Club did Choir Boy, even though the show had closed, but that was pretty smart because it might increase future subscribers.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | June 10, 2019 3:44 AM |
Shocked at how bad the Tootsie number was. There's no way I could sit through the whole show judging by that performance.
Also shocked at how bad The Prom performance was. Why is Ryan Murphy so taken with it? It looks so basic and amateurish.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | June 10, 2019 3:45 AM |
Corden was a buffoon.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | June 10, 2019 3:46 AM |
Did you hear Andrew Rannells call Darren Criss "Girl?"
by Anonymous | reply 110 | June 10, 2019 3:47 AM |
The virtue signaling was so strong tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | June 10, 2019 3:49 AM |
I'm growing tired of James Corden. Every one of his grande performances is exactly the same. The same could be said of Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman. They all think they're way more talented and versatile than they really are.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | June 10, 2019 3:50 AM |
I thought all the Trump bashing was a brave and bold choice in this particular setting.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | June 10, 2019 3:50 AM |
Nothing really matched De Niro's FUCK TRUMP from last year. Remember when Springsteen performed for 20 mins?
by Anonymous | reply 114 | June 10, 2019 3:51 AM |
I bet a lot of people didn’t clap at Cranston’s “enemy of the people” remark because he used the word “demagoguery” and a lot of people don’t know what that means.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | June 10, 2019 3:53 AM |
Shirley Jones looks great.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | June 10, 2019 3:53 AM |
Was that a dress Jordan Roth was wearing? I couldn't really tell. Does he consider himself non-binary?

I bet a lot of people didn’t clap at Cranston’s “enemy of the people” remark because he used the word “demagoguery” and a lot of people don’t know what that means.
They are unfamiliar with Harvey Weinstein and Scott Rudin?
by Anonymous | reply 118 | June 10, 2019 3:55 AM |
R108 I take Ryan Murphy’s doing The Prom and BITB for Netflix as an easy way for him to meet the quota he has to reach for is contract without actually having to come up with something new himself.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | June 10, 2019 3:56 AM |
Why was the maid from Gossip Girl sitting next to Rennels?
by Anonymous | reply 120 | June 10, 2019 3:57 AM |
They’re best friends, R120. I forget what show they first met on.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | June 10, 2019 3:59 AM |
I love that they're best friends. I always thought she might be a hag.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 10, 2019 4:03 AM |
At age 87, Elaine May is the second oldest person to win a Tony.
The oldest is Cicely Tyson, who was 88 when she won for A TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL.
I didn't realize that May was married to lyricist Sheldon Harnick from 1962-1963.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | June 10, 2019 4:04 AM |
87.
Damn. That is impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | June 10, 2019 4:07 AM |
It's a shame that Datalounge hates Ryan Murphy. I'm looking forward to BITB on Netflix and I'm glad that he dusted off this play for a new generation.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | June 10, 2019 4:07 AM |
Loved Elaine May's acceptance speech. The rest of the show is frightening me.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | June 10, 2019 4:08 AM |
I'm surprised that Alistair Crowley is still alive. Isn't he the only living person from the play and movie?
by Anonymous | reply 127 | June 10, 2019 4:11 AM |
A lot to dish. I give the show a C. The writing stunk. Cordon is lame ....the opening number failed with his huffing and puffing. Sometimes less Is more. They tried too hard. Best laugh of the night was watching Billy Porter in his masculine outfit. That queen complained that he isn’t seen for straight roles?? Second laugh was seeing a mother (Of a woman winner)crying and losing her falseeyelash. Most hideous look- all the homos wearing drape patterns on their jackets. The Tootsie number looked like a production number from a flop show from the 60’s. Really awful. Biggest surprise - Charlotte St Martin sprung for a new wig. They won’t sell a ticket award goes to King Kong. That was a waste of 3 minutes. Stupidest direction.- closeups of the 🖨3 Cher’s. They looked nothing like her. Should have been all long shots. Beetlejuice’s Special lyrics sucked as did the number. Oklahoma was grim, Kate was good but we’ve seen it before. Hadestown was the only interesting thing about the show. I got real tired of looking at Andrew Rennels plastic face and listening to his whiny voice. The Prom will post notice. A lesbian kiss won’t sell tickets.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | June 10, 2019 4:15 AM |
R86 Terrence McNally has had lung cancer since 2001. He’s had multiple surgeries and was in remission for awhile but apparently it’s not going well now. It was sad to see him gasping for air during his speech.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | June 10, 2019 4:18 AM |
Billy Porter is such an attention whore. Of course he showed up in another obnoxious man-gown. He's so thirsty for next day headlines about what he was wearing.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | June 10, 2019 4:21 AM |
Unlike his LOOK AT ME lewk at the Met Gala, Billy was smart to make sure that his face is recognizable in his TONY Awards show costume.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | June 10, 2019 4:25 AM |
I'm shocked Jim Parsons was not asked to present anything (or perhaps he did and I missed it). He and all his boys looked great together.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | June 10, 2019 4:32 AM |
Rosemary Harris is class incarnate and has the most beautiful voice. Long may she continue to enchant audiences in New York and London.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | June 10, 2019 4:38 AM |
To the person above who said Cranston was the only prior winner, I think that’s only true for the actors. The winners for set, lighting, and costumes for a play have all won before. But I think all of the musical winners are first timers.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | June 10, 2019 4:42 AM |
I wonder if Andre DeShields is hung??? Does anybody know??? Who’s had him???
by Anonymous | reply 135 | June 10, 2019 4:47 AM |
I love how the Hadestown straight white male demanded LESS cis white males on Broadway (not more trans/POC/women, but LESS cis white males). I guess he got his so it's a win-win. He receives an award as what he just denounced, and gets to look like a woke warrior at the same time!
by Anonymous | reply 136 | June 10, 2019 4:47 AM |
I'd give the show a C- to D+. Very little that was engaging or entertaining. All of the Corden bits were terrible. Musicals were boring and devoid of life. What happened to professional musicals? They looked like college productions or regional theater offerings. Hadestown was the only thing remotely creative. Three hours and they couldn't finish on time.

I hate it when musicals sweep. It sucks!
by Anonymous | reply 147 | June 10, 2019 6:06 AM |
The Cher Show is, unfortunately, lame. Really awful. It's Vegas on Broadway, and in an effort to appear relevant, tries to really appeal to feminists and gays. But it's not nearly campy enough for the gays, and Cher's life story is, well, not that interesting and not that feminist.
And note: I love Cher. Just not this shit show. The costumes are the best part, and SJB is very, very good. Unworthy of a Tony, but her competition this year was weak.
PS. Charlie Williams is a god. Why wasn't he in the Cher dance number tonight? (Did see him in the opening number though.)
by Anonymous | reply 148 | June 10, 2019 6:10 AM |
I didn’t get to see them but Rachel Chavkin’s speech for winning the Best Direction Tony is all over social media. Was she as insufferable as she sounds?
Considering the other nominees in the category were all white men, weren’t her comments rather insulting?

There was way too much James Corden. Who the hell does he think he is? You'd think he was the biggest singing/dancing star on Broadway by the amount of singing and dancing he's allowed to do. His opening number was truly awful. The bathroom skit was cute. But truly....enough.

I love Cher, but have no desire to see the show.. Stephanie may have been better in other things, but I can spend $200 and see the real Cher- who still sounds great. I've seen better drag queens.
When they did the Jimmy Fallon takeover, the minute Cher joined the other 3 Chers singing they may as well just have disappeared.. Cher commands the stage.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | June 10, 2019 7:52 AM |
R163. Cher is not minimally talented. She is extraordinarily talented. Apparently, you have missed her concerts, which are events, and her movies. Her voice is still as strong as ever.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | June 10, 2019 8:04 AM |
I wouldn't be found dead at a Cher concert. But I know she lip syncs all her "concerts" and devotes her time to changing costumes and wigs and repeating the same script. Cher most certainly IS minimally talented no matter how much you wiggle your old white ass to her hits from the sixties all the way up to her atrocious ABBA covers!! She's a personality who has done very well for a woman who can't read or write. Her voice may be strong as ever, but she never was much of a singer. So there's that. I haven't missed her movies. Who does?

At last the Tonys don;t even pretend to be geared to heteros anymore. However, the commercials should be adjusted to the viewer demographic. Instead of the Truvada commercials, there should be commercials for prune juice, caftans, and denture cream - the stuff that the ancient gays would need and like. After all, that's your audience.

For those of you who have seen the shows that performed segments last night, what was your impression of how the show was presented? Was it a good representation? Kong did a great job of selling its show, since it didn't feature any singing or female empowerment nonsense that has taken the show to ridiculousness.

by Anonymous | reply 183 | June 10, 2019 12:39 PM |
' Unstoppable' worked much better in the context of the show. Their was little set-up and the pacing seemed a bit off in the Tony's version. This is a quirkier show than you might imagine. 'Unstoppable' was one of the more conventional numbers. Andy Grotelueschen, Lilli Cooper, Sarah Stiles and especially mega-hunk John Behlmann added a lot to the show and we saw none of that on the Tony Awards show. Fans of musical comedy will not want to miss this show with this cast.
I'm also sad to see so many dissing 'The Prom'. Yes, it broke no new ground but it was a fun night at the theater and cast members Brooks Ashmanskas, Beth Leavel (who would have had my vote for the Tony for her Liza Minnelli meets Bette Davis take on her character) , Michael Potts and Caitlin Kinnunen, among others, were delightful.

Broadway is insanely expensive. I go to the theatre two or three times a week here in London (when I don’t have a show on) and rarely pay for than £30. I’ve only bought expensive tickets twice, for Hamilton and Book of Mormon, and both were about £80 - cheap by Broadway standards!!

With a 4.3/8 in metered markets, the 2019 Tony Awards are down just more than 10% from the 2018 Tony Awards of June 11 last year. In fact, at least in early numbers, the Tony Awards look to have fallen to a multi-year low.
That says it all. A dynamic host might help, but better shows would be a must.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | June 10, 2019 4:26 PM |

I can't stand the sight of that fat sow James Corden, whose Tony win was a complete abomination - anyone remember him in ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS? It should have gone to Philip Seymour Hoffman for DEATH OF A SALESMAN, or any one of the other worthy nominees - Frank Langella, James Earl Jones, or John Lithgow. Instead this porker has been foisted on us forever, dining out on one aberrant "win."
And Broadway can crow all it wants about its 90% attendance and the money they rake in, but the shows are complete SHIT. Bad jukebox musicals, mediocre "musicals" squeezed out of old films - TOOTSIE? KING KONG?? Now they're reduced to celebrating DEATH in song and dance! No name "stars" who come and go, with varying degrees of so so talent. The whole thing is nauseating.
But that fat pantload Corden should have been kicked out of Radio City on his FAT ASS!

If the one thing Mackie did for Cher it's that he made her clothes fit like they were part of her. Block's Cher outfit on the Tonys was an embarrassment. I thought Neil Patrick Harris was a great host. Corden was good the first time he did it, but last night was a major embarrassment, along with the worse list of musicals I can remember. Hadestown I might want to see but the rest of that schlock was plain awful. If this was a great season for Broadway, a lot of people must have been tone deaf. Of course there are non-musicals and I am sure some of them might be good but we don't see scenes from them. There is no more creativity and originality on Broadway; everything seems to be based on a movie, TV show or comic book.

What is likely to stay open other than Hadestown? Even Hadestown will have a rather limited run. It doesn't seem to have " universal appeal".
Not every year will produce something lasting and the deadline article's stupid assertion that "there was no Hamilton this year" is just oblivious stanning. There was no Hamilton last year and likely won't be one next year. Hamilton was a once in a generation if not once in a life time convergence.

Mmmm. Yeah. All that gay stuff and shows where middle aged women power belt about ambition is such a turn off to the theatre community. And shows with black people dancing and singing and acting and stuff. I'm sure all the Tony fans out there are just as outraged as the comic book fans about 'SJW' stuff infiltrating the theater.
Seriously do you even know what 'SJW' is all about? Maybe you need to go back to reddit to complain about Brie Larson in your super-hero movie and prepare your furious manifesto about disney failing to shut down the SJWs once and for all by making Elsa a heteronormative princess who in deeply interested in finding a nice white nordic prince.
People aren't watching TV any more. And as much as the actors are terrified that the more lucrative promise of a cushy TV job is clearly evaporating there is the weird reality that theater is doing better than many professional sports right now. Actors don't stand a chance of getting super rich off Broadway -- but producers sure as hell do. No one really knows what to make of that. Especially this year when all the new shows are so very bad!

The biggest losers of last night were the musicals which had a chance to introduce themselves to the country. Why? Tours, which bring in large sums of cash. People can't afford to come to Broadway, so Broadway comes to them. Based on what was shown, would anyone want to see the touring company of Beetlejuice? Ain't Too Proud? Cher? Even Oklahoma is not going to do well on the road.

"Broadway attendance in the 2017 – 2018 season topped those of the ten professional New York and New Jersey sports teams combined. Broadway surpassed the combined sports teams by over 3.5 million in attendance."
Obviously taking The Yankees out of the picture makes a big difference but minor sports and losing teams are having trouble. The reality IS that theatre is apparently doing well right now while network TV constantly losing viewers to other devices and options.

What were the impressions of the In Memoriam section? It's my belief that the focus should be on the deceased, rather than the singer, who was performing as if she were in a nightclub.
by Anonymous | reply 326 | June 11, 2019 1:23 AM |
We could have much less focus on the song and singer at the end, and given more time to see the pictures.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | June 11, 2019 1:25 AM |
"Can You Feel the Love Tonight" was a suspicious choice. Perhaps that was Erivo pre-shading Beyonce. In Memoriam segments are usually better when there's a cellist on stage doing a rendition of some well known emotional song. I like it when they show clips of the deceased.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | June 11, 2019 1:27 AM |
Better song choice - And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going!
by Anonymous | reply 329 | June 11, 2019 1:32 AM |
A cellist would definitely be preferable. Putting aside the fact that it was Cynthia Erivo, in recent years there has been way too much focus on the singer. Relegating the pictures of the deceased to the background makes them seem like an afterthought.

Corden's counter tenor harmony here is first class. He can sing quite well indeed. You see Buble look surprised by him a few times. JHud had the same reaction to him. He's just not a song and dance man and doesn't posture as one the way NPH does. Corden actually downplays his singing ability.

Dogfight was off Broadway, so it wasn't nominated for any Tonys. The two actresses in that number are Lindsay Mendez, who won last season for Carousel, and Annaleigh Ashford, who won her Tony for You Can't Take It With You.

I find myself agreeing with you more and more, R355. It’s accurate to talk about straight white males historically being privileged, but it’s far less straightforward when talking about a specific person, just as it is when anyone says something like, “the problem with women” or “black people”. To lump any responsibility onto a single stratum of society is what conflates the problem, isn’t it?
That’s why I’m so appalled by Rachel Chavkin’s acceptance speech. She dismissed the other nominees because they were white men, while acting like her winning was an acknowledgement of her innate superior talent. It’s aggressive, arrogant entitlement, but can’t be called out on it by me, because I’m a white male and therefore exempt.
A big screaming nancy of a white male, but a white male nevertheless.

I also found Ali's rendition of that song grating, but Broadway goes for loudness over quality. You can add the appalling Leslie Mendez to the list for her screechy Carrie Pipperidge in the last CAROUSEL. Of course she won a Tony, for the same role which brought Audra McDonald her first Tony, but Audra sang beautifully.
Performers these days just keep trying way too hard.

Wouldn't Broadway attendance always beat out sports attendance? I guess sports stadiums can hold more people, but a Broadway theatre can be filled 8 times a week, whereas sports teams play less AND a Broadway theatre can be filled year round, while a a sports team takes a break. Sports teams also travel, so the Yankees have one home game this week. It seems like a very misleading statistic, no different than when they tout "we broke the grosses record" and omitting the fact that ticket prices are the highest they've ever been.

Why do the ugly racist posters of DL need to invade even the Tony Awards thread? Cynthia Erivo is a talented woman who looked beautiful the other night. She isn't the director of the show. They choose what to feature in the Memoriam shots. Billy Porter is a Tony winner, Drama Desk and Grammy winner for Kinky Boots. He's a proud and flamboyant gay man. I don't like him either, but he can present an award. Some on this thread don't like him because he is proud, gay and BLACK.
Some others made pointed posts about the cast of the Temptations musical. It didn't look great, but those men could SING. The white performers were just as dull and in some cases more ponderous and ostentatious. Erivo is not Audra McDonald. Thank god. I've read a whole thread on DL calling Heather Headley names and she's a magnificent singer in any format. A wonderful star and sweet woman too. The innate pride of black men and women is what some of you dislike. Some y'all are just racist. DL is famous for being the most racist gay site on the internet.

She was nominated for all 12 seasons (twice in '87 and '90, when she hosted the Tonys) and she still went home empty-handed!

And an honorary Oscar. I think her noms for Murder She Wrote were considered too lightweight. She always seemed to lose to actresses with more serious fare like Sharon Gless, Tyne Daly, Patricia Wettig, Dana Delaney etc.

If y'all were alive to watch the 1960 Tony Awards, you should participate in one of those gay old men youtube videos where you talk about how times have changed, guess the names of current gay icons and reminisce about how hot Sal Mineo was in 1952. Jesus Christ.
If you ARE old please try to understand that you are OLD and that some of your objections (to everything) come from being SO old.
Otherwise the Tony Awards sucked. But y'all complained when Sutton Foster or Patti LuPone or Brian Stokes Mitchell or Jersey Boys and Les Miz were around too. Right?

My impression is that Danny Burstein is well liked, and that’s why he has so many nominations in the first place. A different actor would not have gotten nominated for Golden Boy. He’s not a showy actor, and he hasn’t been in the right vehicle at the right time to win. Advance word is that Moulin Rouge is the right vehicle. He just has to hope that someone else doesn’t become the Elaine May of the season and make the other nominees irrelevant.
I think he is the actor who has lost the most times without ever winning.

It's true that "this cis, entitlement, privilege crap " is the product of liberals.
It's also true that all of it is constantly reinforced and blown out of proportion by conservative media as a calculated way to inflame and divide the electorate. that's not it r453. SJW is for the people who endlessly and vehemently police all language, no matter how inoffensive. The people who insist that Tootsie is "literally killing trans people". The people who insult their fellow nominees by railing against cis white men being nominated. The people who demand you speak and think exactly as they do or you are a racist or showing your 'privilege'. The peope who insist a production of Evita or In the Heights be shut down if someone in the cast is Italian and not 'latinx'. It's become fascist and exhausting. And no, I never ever want to use the "n" word.

[quote]Moulin Rouge will be a hit and steal whatever momentum Tootsie had at the BO
That's not likely. Tootsie got two major Tonys, and one of them, for Santino, is a marquee award.
Moulin Rouge may very well be the next monster hit (the first, really, since Hamilton), but it won't kill Tootsie, as much as you might like it to.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | June 14, 2019 5:19 AM |
What's a marquee award?
by Anonymous | reply 458 | June 14, 2019 5:41 AM |
One that goes on the marquee, like "Tony Award Winner Santino Fontana!!"
by Anonymous | reply 459 | June 14, 2019 5:42 AM |
However Santino's performance simply isn't getting any buzz. When it was Erivo, or Katrina Lenk, or Faith Prince even, or some of the other performances who ended up winning, it was part of a trajectory becoming a must-see performance. Fontanta's doesn't feel like that. Yawn.

by Anonymous | reply 468 | June 18, 2019 4:39 AM |
Relax a little r468. She makes some good points - it would be wise for the Tonys to celebrate the magic of theater a little more and have fewer breathless, witless numbers defending it. No one who's watching needs to be convinced "theater is live, turn off your screens"; they already have some interest, build on that. She's not wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | June 18, 2019 2:05 PM |
No, she's not wrong. There have been Tony shows that captured the viewers' imagination and drew us into the magic of theater. Last Sunday's show offered nothing, and Corden, for all his professed love of theater, was a dud.
I wonder who wrote this for her? They are likely her views, but they're much better articulated than usual.

I do like Adams' suggestion about returning the show to a Broadway theater as opposed to Radio City Music Hall.
Does anyone know how they did it in the old days? In the typical theater, here are not enough aisle seats to give all the nominees a seat on the aisle. Did they move nominees off the aisle once their categories had been awarded so upcoming nominees could sit on the aisle? Or did some poor winner have to make their way out of the middle of the row in order to get to the stage?
by Anonymous | reply 472 | June 18, 2019 2:36 PM |
You can see how it was done in 1960, with winners having to make their way to the stage from crowded tables. That is, when the winners were there to accept, which seemed to have not been definitely established beforehand.

They're not going to move them to a Broadway theater. The largest Broadway house, The Gershwin fits like 2,000 people. Radio City fits 6,000. That means that even if they could somehow displace Wicked to do this, they still have 4,000 less seats to sell. That's a BIG cut. Add in that back in the day of Broadway houses there were at most 2-3 producers per show. When Rent won three producers accepted. When Hadestown won there were dozens. A BIG part of the package offered to investors is going to the Tonys. Not to mention the logistics issues, the fact that Broadway theaters aren't designed to have cameras in the way that Radio City is. Broadway venues don't have the lobby areas and bathrooms and backstage amenities, it's just not gonna happen and I'm tired of people saying it.

They didn't always show the nominees for the non major awards and most of the technical winners would make their way from the back or from the far sides. I don't think they resat people, they might have.
