Who wouldn't want to pay top ticket prices to see a performer way past her prime!
Barbra Streisand to Play Madison Square Garden Aug 3 2019. Does anyone still care?
by Anonymous | reply 411 | October 30, 2019 5:01 PM |
The voice is not there anymore. I would never pay to see her now.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 9, 2019 7:37 PM |
I have zero interest, but people will flock to see her.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 9, 2019 8:07 PM |
She needs to do smaller venues and scale back her arrangements for her voice the way it is now, not the way it was 30 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 10, 2019 12:56 AM |
I can’t wait because she is and always has been a marvel on stage and in person. It’s always a masterclass and very entertaining.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 10, 2019 1:09 AM |
She's an icon and still has a good singing voice. Don't be so hard on her.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 10, 2019 1:14 AM |
How will she have time to film Gypsy?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 10, 2019 1:17 AM |
And her enthusiastic new audience of millennials who adored her latest album will be ignited the phone wires and internet on Monday to buy tickets!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 15, 2019 4:21 PM |
I don't see why she doesn't just do a concert version of Gypsy if she wants to play that role so desperately. It'd sell out in a minute.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 15, 2019 4:33 PM |
She'll sell out because she is worshipped like some sort of goddess in the greater NYC area.
And it will be awful, and the critics will savage her because her voice is gone and because she's so pretentious.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 15, 2019 4:39 PM |
I actually enjoyed watching her concert on Netflix from a few years back. Her voice isn't what it used to be, but it's not a total embarrassment and she seemed more relaxed and fun than she's ever been.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 15, 2019 4:42 PM |
Wouldn’t she need a fat suit to play Madison Square Garden convincingly—it’s much bigger than she is?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 15, 2019 4:46 PM |
She still sounds a thousand times better than Dionne Warwick.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 15, 2019 4:56 PM |
That's not saying much, r12.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 15, 2019 4:58 PM |
I have my ticket!!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 15, 2019 4:59 PM |
Old NYC queens will go.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 15, 2019 5:11 PM |
Old and middle-aged Lawn Guyland and NJ Jewish women will go too.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 16, 2019 2:19 AM |
Barbara Streisand at 77. Yes, her looks and voice have changed but she's still got the goods. A Legend forever.
Most people would LOVE to have the voice she has now much less back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 16, 2019 4:04 AM |
The anti-vaxxers will be there in full force.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 16, 2019 12:32 PM |
In Hyde Park in July
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 16, 2019 12:41 PM |
Come on now, she's not That fat! Oh, whoops, I thought she was going to Play MSG in a film..... never mind.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 16, 2019 2:54 PM |
Honestly, Barbra sounds better at 77 than Celine Dion sounds at 51.
They showed a clip on TV of Celine singing live(for a change) in Vegas, and she sounded like a lesbian Elvis impersonator.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 16, 2019 8:16 PM |
Celine is an immortal vocal goddess. Beloved around the world. She's sung most nights of her life for the last 30 years. Streisand is a cold pretentious delusional ASS who rings every $$$ she can out of her few thousand remaining fans. She also uses pro-tools (autotune) on record and in concert for the last 6 years. She refused to sing for her fans when she had a voice, but will do anything for applause now. The most obnoxious female performer in history. Bitch can't sing. NO WALLS!!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 16, 2019 8:29 PM |
Celine Dion can't touch the greatness and cultural legacy of Barbra Streisand. However, Babs should be playing the Cafe Carlyle, not Madison Square.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 16, 2019 8:39 PM |
Babs should do Stonewall Inn.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 18, 2019 7:27 PM |
Barbara plays Madison Square Garden? I'll bet $100.00 on the Garden.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 18, 2019 7:29 PM |
But what about Shirley Bassey?!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 18, 2019 7:30 PM |
You need to get a vaccination to attend her concert R18?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 18, 2019 7:31 PM |
Because she can't sing it, R8. Certainly not "live."
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 18, 2019 7:39 PM |
I saw Barbra in concert in 1994. It was perfection. It's no longer perfection, but she's a legend. She will sell out because those who haven't seen her may think this is their last chance before she stops concert performances altogether.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 18, 2019 8:57 PM |
Or is reported as dead, R30
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 18, 2019 9:01 PM |
$283.00 for the cheap seats. A couple of THOUSAND for a floor seat.
Does she need the money at this point that bad? It's not like she hasn't been performing on a reguar basis. This is just vulgar, and to add insult to injury, she can't even acknowledge that she performs for her fans. Last tour it was she had to buy a new painting? So let's milk people of every cent.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 18, 2019 9:04 PM |
I think she has unending hunger for success and to be highest grossing artist in a venue with highest ticket prices. She will record a new album in 2020 just to get #1 for the new decade. She knows nobody can beat her. She is 77, pretty sure this is her final concert in Europe. In US she may have a concert here and there but not for many years. She may look younger than her real age but her body and voice are showing age. People will pay a lot because they know she will stop one day, probably soon.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 18, 2019 9:10 PM |
She's a baritone now, so there's that.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 18, 2019 9:14 PM |
Will she sing "Old Man River"?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 18, 2019 9:51 PM |
I'm with r3. If Streisand appeared at the Beacon or Carnegie Hall she'd sell out the place with even higher ticket prices. That I'd find a way to pay for. The sound in a stadium like the Garden flattens the voice.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 18, 2019 9:57 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 19, 2019 12:02 AM |
Her ticket prices are outrageous. She can certainly still sing, but not how she used to and to charge that much for a shell of her former self is sad.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 19, 2019 12:19 AM |
$283 for the cheap seats is gouging the customer. I love Barbra, but come on, girl. Knock off that shit.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 19, 2019 12:39 AM |
I don’t go to concerts anymore. I am not up for today’s music. Artists I grew up with are in their 60s or 70s.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 19, 2019 1:00 AM |
Don't you queens know that Barbra is poor? She needs this money to add another ice cream joint to her mall and add some alabaster stone to her cliff overlooking Malibu. And the siding on Grandma's house needs to be redone. Her cook famous for those wheat flour almond pancakes that she devours wants a little more than minimum wage, and there's a sale on a new Rembrandt.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 19, 2019 1:30 AM |
I'd LOVE to see her really poor.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 19, 2019 1:38 AM |
$283 for the low end tickets is nothing short of a heresy. Johnny Mathis, who will be heading Westbury in July, set that as his TOP front row ticket price, and he's just as much of a legend and in far better voice than this aging red menace harpy. Her balls are unending, and shame on those gullible old queens and aging yentas from Long Island and Westchester who would shell out good money to hear cuts from one of the worst albums ever made (Walls) and in a voice that's morphed into an amalgam of Bea Arthur and Brenda Vaccaro with hair and wardrobe that make Endora look like Glinda. Pity.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 19, 2019 1:38 AM |
Streisand and son Jason. Matching noses.
Early in her career she was told to get a nose job on that big beak but she declined because she feared it would affect her singing voice.

R49, where did you come from? 1965?

by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 19, 2019 1:59 AM |
One would be lucky to see her. There are very few true icons in our modern age. The internet has destroyed that mystique. Time has taken the rest. She's a legend. Seeing her in any capacity is to be in the presence of rare greatness. She doesn't have to prove anything. She's been there, and still standing. Clubs, Broadway, Albums, TV, Movies, Concerts, she's done them all. A supporter of the gay community. A singular, one of a kind talent. Respect, children. That's what she should get. What she deserves. Deal with it.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 19, 2019 2:00 AM |
R57, Streisand is not an icon of the MODERN age.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 19, 2019 2:02 AM |
I said IN our modern age, fool. Meaning that most of the old school icons are gone. Sinatra, Elvis, ain't gonna be buying tickets for them any time soon.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 19, 2019 2:10 AM |
Comparing vapid contemporary performers to Streisand is hilarious. Keep up the comedy!
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 19, 2019 2:15 AM |
My dad's vile 3rd wife (Jewish) insisted they go see Babs in Vegas. Tickets were $2500 each, plus hotel and airfare. I asked him how she was and he said "Fine, I just kept thinking we could have gone on a great weeks vacation for that money".
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 19, 2019 2:16 AM |
R56 Tony Bennett is a greater icon of the modern age, older, wiser, been around far longer, and curiously, still considered cool and hip to certain factions of the younger and even millennial audience. Yes, millenial and gen Z. Streisand is no longer considered "cool." Was she ever! She's a relic from another era. Even the gaylings don't get her, don't listen to her, and certainly don't respect her. Before she was ever an icon, she was a ruthless, greedy schnorer always out to make a buck and would be the first to bid a heartfelt "fuck you" to her many fans who spent their last dollar buying her crap through the years if they were to complain about the outrageous ticket prices. For someone who's talent is a fraction of what it was, that's highway robbery. I can respect her achievements, her early music, and her iconic status, but I will NOT spend another dime on her, least of all these ridiculous, insane prices for nosebleed heaven in Madison fucking Square Garden, of all places!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 19, 2019 2:18 AM |
$2,500?! Did they get a lapdance?

Nice try, R59. NO DEAL.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 19, 2019 2:24 AM |
R57. Barbra is my all-time fave. Everything you say is true, it's just that Barbra's ticket prices are a rather out of reach. She's beginning to saturate the market by playing the same locations or areas. We have heard the same music over and over again. I would go to see her again, but come on with the ticket prices even for the cheap seats.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 19, 2019 2:58 AM |
Thank you. Yes tickets are outrageous. Just wanted to add some context to this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 19, 2019 3:03 AM |
I wouldn’t pay MSG prices. Luckily her tickets have always been cheaper here in Europe.

Streisand and later Merman and Tony Bennett we're guests on Judy Garland's mid 1960s tv variety show Judy ended the series with concert without guests, so Mary Martin was not on the show.
There guests on an earlier special we're Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.

r65: Wait for the CD and DVD. And you are right, most of the material will be songs she has performed many, many, times. And it's likely she'll perform several of the dreary stinkers from "Walls".
You were expecting "Guava Jelly"?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 19, 2019 3:58 AM |
She should perform a "Woman in Love" / "Oops I Did It Again" mash-up. The two songs sound very similar!

R74, "Losing My Mind" is from the Sondheim musical Follies and is known as such. One would have to be a mega Queen for a Day to refer to it as a "Liza Minnelli's hit."

And that Liza and the PSB cut it...
by Anonymous | reply 85 | June 19, 2019 10:21 AM |
Barbra also has the nerve to take multiple breaks during the show and send out singers who we could give a hoot about. I remember she sent out Il Divo when she was “Back to BROOKLYN” and then her son. We weren’t paying for that shit.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 19, 2019 11:05 AM |
So the consensus should be to stay home!

Suggest listening to some of the tracks from Walls- Lady Liberty, Take Care of This House. She must have been vocalizing because her voice is markedly turned around from the more recent rasp and loss of power. Please don't tell me she is autotuned. I know someone very well who works with her recording team. Kind of interesting that on the CD she does her best singing in years, but the duet CDs are the ones that sold so well. The best is not often what is popular.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | June 19, 2019 4:05 PM |
How’s the ticket sell so far?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | June 19, 2019 4:13 PM |
Better than the gap-toothed slut, I imagine.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | June 19, 2019 4:28 PM |
Of course the duets sell better- people buy them because it's not just Barbra.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | June 19, 2019 4:50 PM |
I thought Barbra's Losing My Mind was one of her better recordings in the past decades. Well sung and super close to the original Broadway arrangement, which she usually tends to steer away from for some reason.
Still, I can't imagine paying that much to see her live. I've always enjoyed many of her performances and her songs, but that's insanity.
I've also kinda soured to her when I realized how goddamn lazy she really is. For years, she squandered her vocal gifts and never performed live. She'd almost always pick the worst projects to attach herself to in the film world. I can't imagine there was a time when she wanted to be taken seriously as a dramatic actress. If she'd really wanted to, she could have done Gypsy when she was 20/30 years younger and it would have probably been a huge hit then.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 19, 2019 5:13 PM |
Most of her best singing and recording are not her "hits" at all. Some like Parade and the title song to Clear Day are great pieces, but by in large her best work is the most obscure. Take Care of This House (Bernstein) is in my opinion one of the best things she has ever done (on the Walls CD).
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 19, 2019 5:16 PM |
I was really surprised to read she was doing this. I saw her last concerti in Brooklyn at The Barclay's center, and it was clear she was really over whatever desire she had left for live performing. It was a really mechanical night, and hardly memorable. I didn't feel ripped off, but I knew from that not to bother if she ever performed live again. And they all end up on Netflix and iTunes anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | June 19, 2019 5:28 PM |
I saw her in Vegas a few years ago, had a great time. Her voice sounded pretty good.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | June 19, 2019 5:58 PM |
My mom was the biggest Streisand and Cher fan, but funny enough Cher always seemed to me to be much younger. Barbra's voice was much better in the 1960s-70s, it had better timbre and less nasal quality. From the 1980s onwards, she relied on nasal tone for her high notes, something she didn't do as often in the earlier decades.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | June 19, 2019 6:05 PM |
She's a semi-talented, appropriately clothed version of Madonna. It's over you old cow!
by Anonymous | reply 106 | June 19, 2019 6:18 PM |
I saw her at Barclay's in 2012 and the crowd was largely disappointed, especially the younger members of the audience. The general sentiment was 'I don't get what the fuss was all about" and "it wasn't worth what I paid." Yet in 1994 when I saw her at the Garden, the electricity and anticipation in that place was like nothing I had ever experienced. In those final notes of the overture before she came out, you feel every pulse in the place. It was thrilling and her voice was equal to the occasion, although she started to crack during the last couple of numbers. I remember the time every project she did and every move she made was monumental to the gay community. When "The Broadway Album" first came out in Nov 1985, Tower Records ran out of cassettes and vinyl. They only has CDs which were still new and rather pricey. They had to take back orders.
It makes me think of that song "Napoleon" from "Jamaica." "What used ta be a roosta is just a dusta now."
by Anonymous | reply 107 | June 19, 2019 6:28 PM |
r96: She does sound very good on "Walls", but most of the material her weakest in many years. I give her props for doing something very personal to her that she knew probably wasn't going to sell as many units as her more recent albums. But the last thing anybody wants to hear are political songs reflecting on or mourning over the state of the country. I think she was stunned at how badly "Walls" did - it barely made the charts before falling off completely into oblivion. That's why she decided to tour again - she needed to follow up a disaster with a success (and the tour is selling well, despite the outrageous prices) and she needs the adulation and psychological boost knowing her fans have not abandoned her.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | June 19, 2019 6:28 PM |
Then she should do a smaller club at more sensible prices, and she'd feel love like she's never gotten.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | June 19, 2019 6:31 PM |
Oh I don't know R109- her concert tapes seem to show a lot of love coming from the audience, she has a devoted husband and people who have work for and with her for decades, and lots of very very good friends. So I think she knows she's loved. Prices for modern concerts are set by rubrics for the type of performer, the expected audience, current market metrics and costs. It's formulaic.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | June 19, 2019 6:51 PM |
After her stint at the Village Vanguard (that resulted in one of her best recent albums), I really thought she might go the way of Mabel Mercer and start playing more intimate venues, focusing on lyrics and less on high-powered delivery. Who knows? She still might.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | June 19, 2019 6:59 PM |
That's bullshit about the costs. Barbra could give back to her fans with reasonable ticket prices to break even. Does it matter to her if she dies with $50O million or $510? Evidently, it does.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | June 19, 2019 7:14 PM |
The 283 bucks would be a better value at a venue like Village Vanguard or the Blue Note. It really is her best bet at the stage of her life and performance ability. I agree R111 that Vanguard was probably the best of her latter day concerts. It emphasized her strengths in subtlety and nuances and heightened the connection with the audience. Something the mega screen at the Garden will not and cannot accomplish.

by Anonymous | reply 114 | June 19, 2019 7:18 PM |
No it's not R110. Ticket prices for performers as formulaic. Sorry if you don't know. There is so much bullshit around Streisand. Good it doesn't get in the way more or less. If you don't like her or the prices- don't go- or watch Netflix. I guess you have to vent anger like many on these threads.

How about the 52nd anniversary of her Central Park concert for free! Would 135,000 queens and Jewish fraus show with their pillows, blankies, and merry widow bras?! It could be videotaped for another CBS special! The only difference is the fact that there's no longer any voice and she's in dire need of bilateral hip replacements. Other than that, Marty Erlichman, let's go!

Totally Agree with r111 & r113. I was hoping "Love Is The Answer" would have been a career-changer for her (less soupy arrangements, more intimacy and interpretive swinging) ...more jazz, less belting. But I fear it was just a 'one off' moment. :-(

r96, I agree with you: WALLS is actually a terrific album with her best singing in years. She belts the hell out of some of those songs.
I've seen every concert she's done since 94: 94, 2000, 2006, and 20012. I did not go to the 20018 concert because I felt her voice was giving out. When I saw it on Netflix, I was right, but even at that there was an absolutely exquisite "I Didn't Know What Time it Was." That's the thing about Barbra: even in her compromised vocal condition, she can still manage to thrill with certain songs. I'll be curious to hear this new one, which will surely be televised at some point, either the London concert or the NY one. I had thought her belting days were long gone, yet she belts on WALLS and it's very good. So we'll see. I still love her, and will always love her.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | June 20, 2019 7:12 PM |
R128 Are you for real! The voice is processed, autotuned, with one of the worst renditions of "Imagine and "What a Wonderful World" ever recorded. Who the fuck needs an album lamenting the deplorable political climate and hellbound status of this world, along with another cynical and "ironic" version of "Happy Days Are Here Again."
Barbra is 77. For Christ's sake, she can't belt any longer and shouldn't have to. She is an interpretive singer whose strengths have always been in her subtleties and nuances. That precision would be so much better accomplished in smaller venues and jazz clubs if she truly cares to continue performing. Just seeing her in an up close intimate fashion such as the Village Vanguard would warrant the higher ticket prices and she would probably sell out much faster. But no. Her ego and avarice will not allow it. She has to prove to her handler s that she is in the same league with Cher and Diana Ross, and can at almost 80, still ask for and GET top ticket prices for inferior and strained delivery.
You may love her, and you're entitled to. I do as well, but I would rather enjoy her early albums, as I often do, in the privacy of my own home, when she was at her very best, and be reminded of why she became a huge star in the first place. Without having to pay a dime!

R128 I think London will be recorded, but I could be wrong. R129 Imagine/What A Wonderful World is terrible and boring. I’m going to London concert because tickets are much cheaper. I wouldn’t pay those MSG prices.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | June 20, 2019 9:21 PM |
I think Imagine/What A Wonderful World is a very clever arrangement and not boring in the least.. I'm the least political person on the planet but I also thought WALLS had some of her most impassioned singing in recent memory. And the MAGIC/MUSIC/MEMORIES concert on Netflix is spectacular, with atypical material, beautifully performed.

I saw her at the Barclay Center in 2017. It was embarrassing. People were leaving en mass during the last song, not even bothering to wait for it to finish let alone stay for the encore. All the worst things you heard about her were on full display, admitting it was all about the money (to buy a painting), that she directs because she likes to tell people what to do, the gratuitous use of the word "fuck," preaching about global warming and politics when people were there for the music. Her voice was crap and the facade was shattered....she really is a nasty, greedy, shallow, bitter cunt.

I'm a huge Streisand fan - but she can be clueless how she presents herself on her album covers. That photo is laughably over-the-top and photoshopped to death: Barbra seated in a fantasy dressing-room jammed with congratulatory rose bouquets, interrupted looking over a score while her Chinese silk robe slips off just enough to reveal her sexy undergarments. It's not quite as bad as "A Collection" (of her stretched on a Stickley couch while her boobs pop out of her tight jacket or the "Walls" booklet, looking like a Malibu Marie Antoinette: "I always feel better when I visit my garden. It makes me smile."
by Anonymous | reply 149 | June 21, 2019 4:09 AM |
Back in the day, I was friends with a guy who did the photo touching for one of her album covers. He made $40k- seriously. Obviously Barbra didn't pay, but still!
by Anonymous | reply 150 | June 21, 2019 5:47 AM |
If she had only that voice - she would still disappoint. What a grotesque human being, singer and performer. She won't be remembered as even a good singer. She ruined most songs she "interpreted." She never serves the song or the composer, she made everything serve her voice and ridiculous orchestrations. She's proven for 50 years to have hideous taste in how she presents herself. Not one younger singer admires her - though many mention Aretha, Whitney, Celine, Ella, Mariah and Gladys Knight as vocal heroes. Streisand doesn't have as many followers as Nancy Sinatra!
And she does use autotune/pro tools as anyone with ears can attest. She looks and sounds ridiculous live. Tacky old bitch phones it in for $500 a seat and up. What city is this, did I sing the song? Wasn't I great - do you like my tits?

I saw her at the Anaheim Pond in 1994. It was thrilling and a night to remember forever. She was in top form. The voice was spectacular. She was gorgeous. Her gowns were gorgeous. She was in her early American architectural period, and the set looked like Thomas Jefferson;s Monticello. When she came down the staircase, the audience went wild. A thrilling night.

by Anonymous | reply 167 | June 23, 2019 12:56 PM |
Streisand could never be objective or honest enough to write a compelling autobiography, because people such as she are perpetually the victim and never wrong. Only if she experienced an epiphany or deprogramming and spilled the last bean on her legendary cuntery, OCD disorder, nymphomania, addictions, eating issues, hoarding, and insufferable greed could she make for a somewhat interesting book with whatever aging queens still have a pulse by the time of its release.
It would also require an extensive book tour and signing and posing for pictures with fans, something of which the 80+ Babs would need plenty of Xanax and Clonopin for. Unless she's still delusional enough to think a book would still sell without those efforts--and that's quite possible, too.

Obviously, she does not need the money. She could have stopped working in the 70s if she had wanted to. She needed a project, something to keep her busy. And perhaps she felt that, at nearly eighty years old, a time of reckoning might be a good or interesting thing to undergo. She has never looked back at her career, never listens to her own records or watches her own movies. Now, she's had to do that and her opinions on her life, her co-stars, studio heads, other musicians, the politics of the day....all of that will be very interesting to read. She says she hopes it will be published in two volumes, and I hope so too. Apparently she has a lot to say about certain things in her past. I'm hoping she will be up front about her most notable affairs: Ryan O'Neal, Anthony Newly, Pierre Trudeau among others.

Two volumes! Jesus H! What will it be called My name is Barbra (Too)?? This Caligula never stops conjuring up demons to vampire money out of her little lamb queers and aging bubbies. Will this be another first for her? The first "stah" who has a two volume autobiography, or three? Like the "Star of the Decade" Tony? Hmmm? Or the Oscar tie with Kate?? Hmmmm? Maybe we can call it Barbra The First Book; or Barbra The Second Book; Barbra The Third Book; like bookends to her first three albums.
Will there be a video companion piece to this bible of dreck? Or 60th anniversary Columbia release? Or TV biopic. The only thing there won't be is HONESTY!!!!! And this is not about to set the record straight on:
Her resentment that she HAD to sing, because no one would give her any acting job. Her ambivalence, not love, for the gay community which was the initial community to accept her, while she would have preferred straight virile handsome men of the day to cream their pants at her wailing. Her treatment of Elliot Gould during "I can Get it For you Wholesale," as well as her disrespect towards Lillian Roth and Arthur Laurents. The abominable treatment her peers received during the making of "Funny Girl" on Broadway.
Her treatment and exploitation of Frank Pierson on "A Star is Born" and confession that she needed a scapegoat to front the fact that she was the real director of the film.
Her minimal contribution to the song "Evergreen," that won her a faux Oscar that she accepted with despicable entitlement and psychotic pride.
Her treatment of Peter Matz on "The Broadway Album" and her frugal and penny-pinching maneuvers to keep the cash flowing cumming in her direction, which cost her a lifetime friendship and collaborator. Matz never forgave her.
The list is endless. If she "writes" this dead sea scroll, I do hope only question is answered truthfully, if at all, and one that author Shaun Considine posed to her in query of a remark she made in the early 1960s: "I hate to sing. I never sing in the bath. I do it only for the money." Does that still apply today? And has it always?

Shaun Considine's 1985 book "BS The Woman, The Myth, and the Music" was a delicious account of her eclectic career, written in much of a National Enquirer-esque fashion, but pulling no punches and sharing unflattering and likely truthful accounts. Back in the day, she had tried to sue on the grounds of libel, but Considine supported every word he wrote with documentary proof. Considine had worked at Columbia Records in the 1960s and later as a journalist and had personally witnessed many of her notorious behaviors and transactions. The only two other bios worth reading are "Her Name is Barbra" in 1993 by Randall Riese and "Hello, Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Streisand" from 2012, which chronicles the years 1959-1964, the teenage beginnings of her career thru stardom on Broadway. If ever a movie were to be done, it should concentrate on that period alone, which highlights the speed and "serendipity" of her ascension.
An Autobiography by Babula is decades overdue. It is a footnote. Like someone pointed out, another example of missed timing, like "Gypsy."The large majority the interested fans are old, dead, or have come to see her true personality after living under her spell for so long. In short, they no longer care. They know what she's going to write, and it's certainly not going to read:
"I was a cunt to so many, because I was born ugly. I had this sense of entitlement and thirst to succeed, and damn it, I was going to do it at any cost, no matter what had to be done or who had to be hurt. I made you believe my mother was opposed to my career, when she was actually a Mama Rose who flogged my ass into action. She knew I was a face for radio, but knew I had a voice and trained me since I was nay high, contrary to my reports that I never took a voice lesson. That's why at 19 with "no training" I could go on Jack Paar, live television, and soar like a dove. Because that's what an untrained 19 year old does. I eventually sold my soul to the devil so I could have my own shopper's world and property equivalent to a small New England town and so the world could view me as a beauty, a benefactress, the epitome of what a woman should be, and of course, the greatest star."
That you will not hear. And most of us don't give a fuck about double gaited Ryan O'Neal, Warren Beatty, Omar Sharif, and the others. Write a shopping list instead.

For all of you queens who wait drooling to read Barbra describe her affairs with co-stars or famous hunky guys in her autobiography, note that these "relationships" were for one night to a few months in duration. Shaun Considine had a terrible misadventure in Central Park when some stupid bitch lost control of her dangerous dogs and they mauled Considine almost to death.
He sued, and the cunt's husband tried to frame Considine with pedo porn, drugs, etc. Then he hired thugs to beat Considine to death--but in fact he hired undercover cops and ended up with a fifteen-year jail sentence. Too bad he wasn't executed along with his wife and dogs.
Incidentally, I think Considine has died, so he wouldn't be posting in this thread.
While we're at it, Ethan Mordden's new Streisand book is useful, too, as an analysis of her records and films rather than a biog.
As for Streisand's autobiog, she's at the point in her life when she can't ever say, "Finished" about anything. It will never appear.
Oh, I forgot this--I'm not sure whether Streisand actually sued Considine or contented herself with his promise never to write about her again.

Did anyone here know Shaun Considine, or any of the other classic Streisand biographers like William Mann or Randall Riese? Somehow, I think of all of them as belonging to a Streisand fan club, with periodic meetings, a club pin, a banner...
Considine wrote also a book about Bette and Joan feuding away forever. Has anyone read it? It's such a great subject. I think I should send a copy to Olivia De Havilland, only she's dead, right?
Has anyone written a book about that other great feud, between the Duchess of Windsor and the Queen Mum (mother of the current queen, Elizabeth II)?
Royal tidbit: If Charles succeeds his mother to the throne, he won't be King Charles III, but King George VII, because his grandmother (the Queen Mum again) made him promise to take the same royal name as her husband, George VI, who died in 1952.

Kristofferson is 83 years old. What a horrible sight to have to witness them warble Evergreeiiiieeeeiiiinnn together. He must be desperate for money because he hates Barbra. Bryan Ferry loses all old man cool points if he sings with Babs Streusel. Yuk, Then she's going to slobber all over Ramin. She gets a very wet mouth when she pretends to think a man is HOT or SEXY or so CUTE! She never knows their names. Who do the Brits want her to sing with? George Michael would have told B.S. to fuck right off and Harry Styles just said NO thanks, who is she though? He sang with Stevie Nicks before. Smart guy.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | July 1, 2019 5:22 AM |
And the proof is in the puddling. Babs is raspy with excruciatingly bad intonation. That's pitchy dogg. Out of breath and out of tune, making no musical sense. She looks relaxed. I give her credit for firing that NAZI designer Donna Karan. But this is local park summer bandshell music singing - nothing as great as Jane Siberry or Jane Oliver or Gladys Knight or Jennifer Warnes does. YUK. OYE. Grotesque singing. Christopherson just stood up and groaned into the microphone. Do y'all want to pay $750 for a mid price seat to HEAR this grotesque medley? She says she never listens to music - did she lose her own EARS? Bitch should be ashamed to charge money for this. But she has none. Shame.

Zandra Rhodes made her hippie pink dress, and the old granny glasses. That suits Streisand. I can't stand her but this new look is a big improvement. Barbra's long time NAZI dress & ugly suit designer Donna Karan - has taken her hundreds of millions to somewhere dumb people live in exile. Babs fired her. Google why R214.
Who the fuck cares? Streisand should be giving free half hour concerts in nursing homes now.

Around 70 000 people showed up to Hyde Park and she sang for 2 hours. Of course her voice has declined, she hasn’t trained it and is 77! But Kris was off, really off. He shouldn’t have been there. I think regular tickets for it were £65.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | July 9, 2019 8:48 PM |
The whole concert. She does tribute to Judy Garland at the end. She said Judy and her became close friends after she appeared on her show.
by Anonymous | reply 218 | July 9, 2019 9:31 PM |
There's no defending her R217. She's 77 AND she hasn't prepared to sing for $2,500 a seat?! She's mostly talking and singing very bad indeed. She's lazy and uncaring but she couldn't really sing anymore no matter what she does. That goes back to the year 2000. She should have never sung live again, because that wasn't great. Don't you ancient f@gs proclaim her to be the greatest pop vocalist ever? She's far from it. My question is why did she insist on selling out her smaller legacy by displaying her lack of vocal ability, taste and musicality in the last few decades? For applause and cash? Barbara Striezand is a narcissistic GREEDY bitch. Most of her recordings murdered the musical integrity of the songs, but she once had a beautiful voice. 35 or 50 years ago.

Woodstock Barbara sure is chatty - but like always she seems to live in outer space. No contact with the real world except to flatter herself. Anyway, all this expensive talk makes less time for her "singing"...but that Ramin Karimloo sounds divine. All By Himself. Then they show lots of Babara clips from back when she was a star.

Karim remembers the lyrics and tries to make an eye contact and connection with Barbra, who had to read lyrics from teleprompter. They was a big one above the mixing table and several on stage, but here she mainly reads from mixing table. She has no time to make a contact because she would then forget the lyrics.

WHY would she sing a song like Second Hand Rose? A ridiculous choice, a song that could (but wouldn't) be sung by anyone. No one wants to hear that tripe in 2019, and it requires very little know-how or vocal ability to sing it.

Like I said above R244- read the reviews of Streisand’s concert- this thread is loaded with bullshit. Celine is a terrific singer- I like her although not a lot of her music, She is not the vocal artist that Streisand is and has not nearly the catalogue of music. She is the first to say so. Virtually all the greatest song writers of the 20th century, a couple dozen or more of their songs that have become definitive standards and volumes of obscure more obscure music where Some of us find her real genius. And yes, pop. Some of it real good (Guilty), some of it more ordinary like much of Celine’s power pop catalogue.

R236, Celine is totally lip-syncing from 3:00 to the end, and quite unconvincingly I might add. This is what she does during all her live performances, because she's incapable of hitting the big notes live.

Barbra didn't hit any of her notes. Sharps and flats, terrible swings and downright misses. Atrocious "singing."

She’s 77 and her voice is great when considering that. I was at the show and it was worth seeing as she’s a legend and it’s better than seeing Lil Nas X. Once she’s gone who will fill her shoes?
The Clintons were there and she railed against Trump, even doing a revised version of Send In The Clowns called Who Is This Clown?. She was heckled for a bit by some snowflake Deplorables and I even saw some hillbilly tourists leave in a group after that, which was hilarious, you bet they were saying “I ain’t listening to no libtard, fag-loving, Commie bitch talk shit about our amazing mutherfuckin’ President!!”
by Anonymous | reply 276 | August 4, 2019 6:28 AM |
Barbra could not sing this Hamlisch/Bergman song so exquisitely. Unbelievable the greatness. She's a fucking choir all by herself. The greatest and most glorious vocalist of our time will always be Whitney Houston.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | August 4, 2019 6:35 AM |
Those hecklers and "hillbilly tourists" were most likely paid by Streisand's team to show up, pretend to heckle her and then make a dramatic exit. She's been doing her unimaginative, simplistic political shtick during her concerts since Dubya was in office. Everyone knows by now that she's going to have a go at Trump. Of course her voice is gone and she can't sing anymore, so Babs needs all the talking to serve as filler.
Besides is there anything left to say about the orange buffoon that hasn't been said already? For once I'd have to agree with the people who used to yell, "Just shut up and sing" at idiot celebs like Babs. Then again she can't really sing anymore, so....
Bitch just needs to retire.

A disaster. There's a harness under that dress holding her up. She destroyed her own pissy legacy out of narcissism and greed. She can't sing a note in tune anymore, has no vocal power or beauty, just a wayward vibrato, foggy tone, wan attempts at phrasing and that constant rasp. The flowing sleeves of a ghost. Her voice does not even evoke a memory, she embarrassed her audience.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | August 4, 2019 7:05 AM |

Yes r295. I love Donna. She would never appear sounding like Streisand. And she never did.
Here is the great Gladys Knight at 75 years old. Singing the song she borrowed from Streisand 45 years ago. Gladys never gave it back. Gladys is singing state fairs and casinos this summer. What a world. Knight is still giving her all and her older voice is soulful and strong. AND on pitch. Her heart and joy of performing are still there on display. You can see her for 40 bucks.

R296, The Way We Were was written by Marvin Hamlisch and Marilyn and Alan Bergman. It's not Barbra Streisand's song, so it could not have been "borrowed" from her. I think Gladys Knight was gutsy to cover the song. Her version is better than Babs'.

It is from a movie that starred Barbra Streisand you know, and she did have a #1 record with it. Her recording also won an Oscar AND the Grammy Song of the Year. So Gladys borrowed it, get it? Don't correct a more clever and elegant man.
Not many people cover Streisand's songs. Gladys did and does it better.

Netflix had a bunch of her old concert films (plus her most recent one done just for Netflix) and I couldn't help but notice how she changed over the years. I don't mean her looks or her voice. In the early concerts she was very free and self-deprecating and fun. As the years went by thought you could see her becoming more and more vain and the stick in her ass getting wider and wider. I still enjoy her music but I'd never go see or watch another concert.

Whitney Houston is already considered the greatest voice of all time. Her legacy is unreachable. She was no joke. But Streisand's few remaining fans are so threatened by that. Whitney left Barbara in her wake 30 years ago. Nothing will change that. Ever. Whitney always showed Barbra and Aretha the greatest respect. Do the same.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | August 19, 2019 10:12 PM |
Barbra sounds good on, surprisingly, the higher head voice notes (her first half of "My Man" sounds almost identical to when she did it in the 60's), but her belt is raspy and barely there. Her trying to get through "Don't Rain on My Parade" was embarrassing. And she still thinks she can do Gypsy when all of Rose's material is almost all belt?

Years ago, a gay friend (who loved Barbra Streisand), and I would go to see her latest movie. The theater seats were filled with middle to upper class middle aged straight women. They were accompanied with their husbands, who they dragged to the movie theatre. Of course, there were multiple gay men in the audience, usually middle aged couples or with groups of friends. I saw this through “Nuts”, “The Prince of Tides” and “The Mirror has Two Faces.” The demographic never changed!

Of course, R338, you are correct. Yet, this was observation from movie theaters west of Philadelphia, in the suburbs. My father, who is straight, working class, likes Barbra too. He thinks she’s beautiful with a killer bod and he enjoys her music.
I always thought she was beautiful, too. I never understood why people find her unattractive.
R339, my friend and I had a falling out. I ended the friendship shortly after “The Prince of Tides”. I didn’t see “The Fockers” because I wasn’t interested in subject matter.

I always find it odd when people say Streisand never had a good voice. She had great tone, power, and range at one time. Whitney did, too, and so did Celine and Cher and Judy and all the classic divas. They each have their own unique talents and specialties. Just because you might like one more than the other doesn't mean that another is untalented.

If you have to explain the difference between Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin & Barbra Streisand's voices compared to what Cher does - there is no hope. It would take reems of musical, technical, critical and spiritual explanation. They're all gay icons. Only four of them are singers. Four of the greatest female vocalists of ALL time.
Cher is not in the top one five hundred best female singers.

Phil Collins recently charged about $250 for cheap seats in Los Angeles at an arena. Acts that Appeal to the 50 and over crowd can charge super premium prices. Also, if an act like Streisand doesn’t perform many concerts, they can draw ticket buyers from multiple surrounding states.

Cher is an entertainer, not a singer and there is nothing wrong with that. Sing a little, dance a little, show some film clips. It's been working for 50+ years.
I'm sure Cher would be the first to say she's no singer- in fact she has. But one thing she has is incredible discipline. To still take singing lessons and work out and diet at her age? Jesus, I'd just lay in bed and have my chef bring me incredible food while I read my financials.

Listen Cher is a great broad and all that. But discipline is not talent. She has much more of one than the other. She never actually sings live in front of people - who pay to see her. Never. She's past desperate to remain seen and seem relevant. Just like Barbara Streusel.
There's a grossness to what they both do. Not because they are women. But because they are greedy old people who can't let go of the spotlight. Their fans form a jerk parade. Gross.

Barbra Streusel? Is that supposed to be clever, cause it isn't.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | August 21, 2019 8:48 AM |
Cher does not sing LIVE and anyone who says otherwise is a very OLD gay man. Cuz her only other fans are drag queens and they all know that Cher lip synched everything since 2003. I've never been to a Cher concert - but my grandmother has. Cher doesn't sing or dance, other people do while she changes wigs and tacky outfits. Her shows are kind of disgraceful. Worse than Barbra's in a way. Because Barbra has some artistic sensibility and still believes she is entertaining people. In her heart Cher knows that she's just robbing old fags of a couple hundred bucks.

Linda Ronstadt is 73, seriously ill and not a very self deprecating person. But, she can still give an honest interview about MUSIC, her career, others singers, past and present. She has non apologetic reasons for trying different things and political views that make sense in theory and backed up with life action. She's fascinating, informative and without pity.
Streisand really is a gross egotistical very rich woman with claws where hands would be, 20 thousand dollar blankets cover her infirmities and a half million dollars in surgery can't hide her fear of death. She's hideous, dishonest and far from reality. And the bitch can't SING! Neither can Linda. What the fuck is Streisand's healthy wealth doing for her? She has a tax shelter cancer ward because all jews are terrified of cancer. OY. What a hideous fraud. I don't much like Linda Ronstadt's blaring voice either, but she's a real woman, an actual mother and citizen and more important musically than Streisand can EVER hope to be. Their generation of singers can't be replaced. Read how alive and honest Ronstadt is in this interview. Streisand offers no real observances about life or politics or Trump or her career. EVER. She's cums in the same can as tunafish. She fights nuclear winters and curly hair and the lack of beachfront property. Oh, and she's for women directors, pay equity AND showing her TITS. She's a gross woman with a pretty ugly career. (Think about it) Streisand is a VERY satisfied woman, in denial about her terrible taste and choices. Her lack of contribution to the field(s) that made her rich probably doesn't trouble her mind at all. She still thinks she was important.
Not compared to to the real women of music, she's not. Past and present, as it turns out.

Read my post again bitch R371. Streisand has nothing to do with anything. She's the most irrelevant "star" of all time. Barbara is a hideous creature. Her music is forgotten, she made terrible movies and ruined most every song she lent her voice to. Fifty other women of her time and place are more important to music and culture than she is. That's what Ronstadt has to do with it!!!

Liking or disliking Barbra Streisand, thinking she can't sing now or never could sing, has nothing to do with the fact that Streisand was/is a VERY BIG STAR. Molly Haskell wrote a very perceptive article about this in the NYT in 1975. Worth reading (see link).
"Stars become stars by meaning many things to many people, and Streisand is no different — sexy to some, sexless to others, exhibiting strength or weakness according to the beholder. And it is in the nature of fantasy, and of stars, to reconcile contradictions that would split mere mortals asunder. Garbo was an impossible synthesis of flesh and the spirit: Dietrich of decadence and probity. Streisand's way, however, is not synthesis but alternation. She leaps like a self‐propelling pendulum between the raucous Jewish kook and the cultured lady, her singing voice Wasp, her speaking voice Jewish. It's as if the triumph of stardom wouldn't taste so sweet without the constant reminder of where she'd been."

Barbra Streisand was also the biggest female movie star of the 1970s. From 1969 to 1980, she was consistently in the Top Ten of Quigley's* Annual List of Box office Champions. Sometimes as the sole female. In 1977, she was #2 on the list, after Sylvester Stallone.

Second time I showed up for him, Charlie offered me an extra $500 to accompany him to a Judy Collins concert. He was wearing a pimp wide brown suede jacket lapel and plaid bell bottoms! He said they were vintage. He told me I didn't have to fuck him but he insisted on squeezing and pulling on my dick all through that terrible show. Felt okay but was a bit embarrassing. Who the fuck is Judy Collins? She was very pleased with herself and sounded like Meryl in the movie about the woman who couldn't sing? Andyway, so charlie wants to go back to my place at w126 and Amsterdam, but told me that he would need to take a double V if I was charging extra. I said don't worry, just pay the taxi. Charlie won't take uber because he hates brown people - they murder jews. He sure does pay a lot for us black men. he's taken me "out" 5 more times!! And I ain't fucked him yet. But yeah he can suck me off for the five. He's not so bad, except for the teeth and breath. Why do old men always want to kiss just cuz they paid 500? He told me Barbra was a civil rights activist in the 1950s. OK. I said but I won't go to see her because it would hurt my ears - charlie asked how much would it cost for my ears to feel better? He likes being seen with me. Can't blame him for that. SO, I AM going to see Barbra Rosa Parks. For a lot more than $500. She can't be worse than his Judy Garland stories or the Judy Collin whale sounds or his old man denture breath. His ass is in not bad shape for 78. He does work out. Squats a lot.

No r397, she wanted to be a BEAUTIFUL actress. Sreizand made one terrible vanity project after another. Only bad films were good enough for her. She only had one talent. It was singing. And kind of drecky old fashioned singing. Mmmmm mem or ees....and she saved it for over the credits in all those terrible films my parents wouldn't even go to.
The Mirror has 3 Chins is famously bad. Barbra must always be discovered to be devastatingly gorgeous about half way through her films. It's in her contract. This unusually involves a new lips color, a black dress and some hair crimping. Suddenly any handsome co stars are ejaculating in their pants. It's exciting when Babra shows her hidden beauty. YUCK. She's had success but she should have sung for people when she was able. That was her only talent. Long ago.

^ Streisand has always been obsessed with her bust. Padding and push-up bras turned her modest B-cups into an explosion of sexy mammaries. It's been so convincing, numerous gays on this very site ooh and ahh over them, though I've never heard it from a straight man. Now, of course, Babs' advanced weight gives her the bust she's always dreamed of., but at her age they look sloppy instead of sexy. Mother Nature always wins, Babs!
