Just saw MOONLIGHT for the first time last night

My god, was this movie good. It tugged on my heartstrings more than I expected.

It is a great movie, definitely the best picture winner of the last decade.

Why did it take you so long to see it?

by Anonymousreply 3June 9, 2019 7:05 PM

Is less impressive as a Best Picture cinematic achievement in retrospect. Will be lumped in with Around the World in 80 Days as head scratchers very soon.

by Anonymousreply 4June 9, 2019 7:05 PM

Your viewpoint is very much the minority and does not reflect the opinions of critics who make such lists r4.

by Anonymousreply 5June 9, 2019 7:07 PM

But the winner is La-La Land.

by Anonymousreply 6June 9, 2019 7:12 PM

Just never really got around to seeing it before, R3. But boy am I glad I did.

by Anonymousreply 7June 9, 2019 7:16 PM

It's a beautiful film. Barry's follow-up film If Beale Street Could Talk is flawed, but has some beautiful qualities (cinematography, score, Regina King).

Will be interesting to see him do the Alvin Ailey film.

by Anonymousreply 8June 9, 2019 7:18 PM

R5 honey, any movie made after #OscarsSoWhite and #MeToo gets raves if it's about any social cause, racial relations, the black experience, minorities in general, empowered females, trans, sticking it to the man, etc. Critics are jokes these days!

That said, I enjoyed the film but don't think it deserved to win Best Picture or Supporting Actor.

by Anonymousreply 9June 9, 2019 7:33 PM

Fuck you r5!

by Anonymousreply 10June 9, 2019 8:47 PM

I'm very sorry r5! I meant that for r9!

by Anonymousreply 11June 9, 2019 8:48 PM

Loved it

by Anonymousreply 12June 9, 2019 8:56 PM

I melted when they met again as adults in that diner where Kev worked as a chef. That entire scene is just pure magic. And when he got up to play their song on the jukebox...❤️❤️❤️❤️

Mary cut the bullshit hysterics. The vast majority of what gets made and recognized is white. The film industry is still very much controlled by straight white men, beneficiaries of the good ole boy network. Relax. White supremacy still reigns.

by Anonymousreply 17June 9, 2019 11:31 PM

The actors were incredible

by Anonymousreply 18June 9, 2019 11:41 PM

I saw it when it came out and loved it and it has stuck in my memory as an excellent movie.

by Anonymousreply 19June 9, 2019 11:45 PM

Act 2 was my favorite and most heartbreaking. I felt so bad for him.

by Anonymousreply 20June 9, 2019 11:48 PM

Overrated to the moon. It makes me wonder, if it were a movie about poor white gay guys, would it even have gotten any awards buzz or critical praise?

by Anonymousreply 21June 9, 2019 11:54 PM

[quote] It makes me wonder, if it were a movie about poor white gay guys, would it even have gotten any awards buzz or critical praise?

...like Brokeback Mountain?

Man, some of you clearly struggle with the idea of watching someone that *gasp* isn't about white characters.

by Anonymousreply 22June 10, 2019 12:00 AM

^Agreed. And I’m so glad that you put R21’s stupidity and foot-in-mouth disease on blast.

by Anonymousreply 23June 10, 2019 12:33 AM

Teen Kev actor is hot. So are adult Kev and of course the yummy Trevante.

by Anonymousreply 24June 10, 2019 12:34 AM

Hated it

by Anonymousreply 25June 10, 2019 12:34 AM

Andre Holland (adult Kev) was in AHS: Roanoke. He looks great shirtless.

by Anonymousreply 26June 10, 2019 12:37 AM

Teen Kev looks nothing like adult Kev. At all.

by Anonymousreply 27June 10, 2019 12:38 AM

Strangely, that’s my complaint, r27. Boy Kev didn’t look like Teen Kev. That took me out of the movie.

by Anonymousreply 28June 10, 2019 12:46 AM

All the Kevs are caramel and all the Chirons are chocolate. I guess that was all that mattered.

by Anonymousreply 29June 10, 2019 1:25 AM

Such a great movie

by Anonymousreply 30June 10, 2019 1:34 AM

R29 Grown Kev wasn’t even caramel. He was about two shades darker than younger Kevs

by Anonymousreply 31June 10, 2019 1:35 AM

I'm gay, black and male (but not American) and it left me cold. I can appreciate the film-making prowess but I didn't lose myself in the story. Also, why is it considered a gay film? Both the guys are debatable as bi, but Kev is definitely at most bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 32June 10, 2019 1:37 AM

I do have to agree that teenage Kev and adult Kev did not look they could be the same person.

by Anonymousreply 33June 10, 2019 1:37 AM

I really enjoyed this movie. Of course, I'm not really one of those who completely picks movies apart - just a casual viewer.

by Anonymousreply 34June 10, 2019 1:39 AM

Grown Kev is medium to lightish brown sugar, but teen Kev is butterscotch.

by Anonymousreply 35June 10, 2019 1:39 AM

I'm not understanding the expectation that the characters look the same through the three acts. Unless they're related, it shouldn't be expected. Hell, the kids on the Brady Bunch didn't even look like siblings, so expecting Hwood to try to get characters to look the same over years isn't realistic.

by Anonymousreply 36June 10, 2019 1:39 AM

R32 what does your being black matter to you not liking the movie much? You sound dumb.

I’m white and there are plenty of movies with white leads I don’t like and I don’t mention that I’m white.

by Anonymousreply 37June 10, 2019 1:40 AM

A good adult counterpart to teen Kev purely on a looks level would have been actor Khalil Kain.

I found it boring after the first act.

by Anonymousreply 41June 10, 2019 1:01 PM

Handjob wins oscar

by Anonymousreply 42June 10, 2019 1:21 PM

It's a very moving film.

I will say it is not splashy, and its power is in how the story is cumulative.......it takes a while to adjust each time the actor changes, but it ultimately works.

by Anonymousreply 43June 10, 2019 1:25 PM

[quote] I'm not understanding the expectation that the characters look the same through the three acts. Unless they're related, it shouldn't be expected.

You did understand that it's all the same character, didn't you?

by Anonymousreply 44June 10, 2019 1:26 PM

Tarell Alvin McCraney, who wrote the original story on which "Moonlight" was based, was on the Tony Awards last night talking about his play, "Choir Boy." (A Tony nominee for Best Play.) He's apparently a big fan of the word "queer."

by Anonymousreply 45June 10, 2019 3:39 PM

I see no issue with the word Queer.

by Anonymousreply 46June 10, 2019 3:40 PM

The actors were meant to be different to show a drastic change in life. That does happen. My brother looks like a completely different person than his teen years. You can't even tell they are the same person.

by Anonymousreply 47June 10, 2019 4:05 PM

[quote]I see no issue with the word Queer.

by Anonymousreply 48June 10, 2019 4:40 PM

Sorry but I did not like the way it was filmed...I pretty much hated it.

by Anonymousreply 49June 10, 2019 4:46 PM

Frankly, Denzel should have won that year. His movie was much better in every way. Denzel was pissed and I did not blame him.

by Anonymousreply 50June 10, 2019 4:52 PM

I loved it. Beautiful movie.

by Anonymousreply 51June 10, 2019 4:59 PM

It's a beautiful film. I specially love the scene were, after that intense 69ing session on the dark beach, they simultaneously cum on each others face. The way the semen contrast with their facial skin is just poetic.

by Anonymousreply 52June 10, 2019 5:00 PM

Too precious and too sanitized for me. I need to see hot chocolate ferocious sex.

by Anonymousreply 53June 10, 2019 5:02 PM

Loved it

by Anonymousreply 54June 10, 2019 5:10 PM

I loved the movie. I remember an interview with someone associated with the movie, I'm not sure if this person was a writer, director, or producer. This person was upset they had never seen a black man cook a meal for another black man on film. So they made Kevin a chef. Those last few scenes with adult Chiron and Kevin have so many deep subtleties, for example, the way Chiron's face falls when Kevin mentions he's been married to a woman.

After being brutalized for his sensitivity in his youth, Chiron has built himself into a tough looking guy. But he's still that sensitive kid who never got over his first crush.

by Anonymousreply 55June 10, 2019 5:19 PM

I would have liked to see a more passionate final scene, with a tender kiss, or strong embrace, more flesh exposed, etc. To me, gay-themed movies tend to be very squeamish about "frightening the horses" (in other words, straight people.)

by Anonymousreply 56June 10, 2019 5:31 PM

I think they made tender, passionate love after it cut to black and the end credits began to roll.

by Anonymousreply 57June 10, 2019 5:51 PM

Andre Holland is the best American actor alive.

by Anonymousreply 58June 10, 2019 6:27 PM

Glad you finally saw it. Always brings me to tears watching it. Love the movie score/soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 59June 10, 2019 6:28 PM

When this movie was in theaters and up for awards, numerous people on Datalounge complained that the film wasn't "gay enough" and that it needed more explicit sex scenes. I'm surprised that those people haven't shown up on this thread yet to voice that opinion.

by Anonymousreply 60June 10, 2019 6:38 PM

It’s a movie. Not porn. Get over it.

It really pisses me off as a gay man that all of you queers who have nothing going on in your lives consider yourselves knowledgeable critics who want to sound knowledgeable. Look at the beauty of the movie. The performances were good; the kid's performances were incredible. The pristine clothes and apartments were a little hard to swallow. I just saw it two nights ago and am thankful, as an eldergay who marched on Washington for our rights and was knocked unconscious by a rock to my head, think it's fucking awesome that this movie won BP.

by Anonymousreply 63June 12, 2019 12:10 AM

Bump

by Anonymousreply 64July 5, 2019 8:09 PM

I really loved it. But the last third lost me a bit. Not the young Kev/old Kev looks thing. It was annoying, but I can get over that. I don't believe that the two men don't do SOMETHING sexual after years of longing for each other. You could tell a straight man wrote it. Still, it was an important film. Glad it was made.

by Anonymousreply 65July 5, 2019 8:15 PM

It was OK. Quite treacly.

by Anonymousreply 66July 5, 2019 8:25 PM

The characters are not gay, drugs destroyed his family, so he becomes a drug dealer, the whole last segment, fantasy horseshit, stupid film

by Anonymousreply 67July 5, 2019 8:26 PM

I cried

by Anonymousreply 68July 5, 2019 8:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 71July 5, 2019 9:54 PM

R63 Thank you. I loved it. I'm an old straight white woman and my straight adult children told me to see it. Said it was one of the best movies they'd ever seen. Great dialogue, surprising scenes, beautiful cinematography, great acting. Even Florida looks good. It's universal. Not a "gay" film or "black" or "people of color" film.
