How respected is she as an actress? I know she's had a longstanding career on "General Hospital", but she was in two fantastic Samuel Fuller films: "The Naked Kiss" and "Shock Corridor", both of which were schlocky but extremely fun in a pulp noir sort of way. I thought she was excellent in both of them. She also has a fairly significant theater background, her most famous performance I think playing Anna opposite Yul Brynner in "The King and I" on Broadway. It seems she's rarely discussed these days. She was exquisitely beautiful too, though it seems her career never really "took off", at least in a mainstream Hollywood way. Was this because she elected to be more of a theater actress?
Well John Ford and John Wayne liked her so she must have been at the top of the pyramid

R1 she was, but not for long apparently. After she did The Horse Soldiers, she ended up doing both the Fuller films, which were considered B-grade exploitation flicks in their time.; critical evaluation of them has been much more favorable contemporarily, and both of those films are part of the Criterion Collection. She really didn't do all that many films after that. She has worked a lot in television, both General Hospital and various other roles. I suspect she intentionally favored theater work given that she had classical training and went to Juilliard. She spent a great portion of the '70s on Broadway.

I LOVE her in The Naked Kiss--such a crazy, pulpy flick. She apparently had a hard time getting substantial film roles in Hollywood because she was too tall. I'm guessing this is why she ended up going back to theater where she started. She's been on General Hospital off and on for over two decades now, but I'm not a soap watcher so I have no idea what she's like on there. She married to the hotter-than-hell (and recently departed) John Gavin in the '70s and the two remained together until he died a year or so ago.

She was married to handsome, 6'4" actor John Gavin (Psycho, Romanoff and Juliet, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Spartacus, Midnight Lace...) until his death in 2018.

R5 they were a beautiful couple—both very attractive people, and they both happened to age extremely well too. Constance is still very elegant looking, even in her 80s.

A friend of mine once described her (before I had seen "The Naked Kiss") by saying, "Imagine if Tippi Hedren could actually act. And also sing. That's Constance Towers."

She's beautiful enough on stage, but not so much on camera. Even less on a big movie screen. If the camera loved her, she would have had a bigger film career. She tried. She is very talented.
She was a wonderful Anna in "The King & I." Linked below she and Brynner do "Shall We Dance?" She and the musical director, give the opening of the song a bit more thoughtful delivery that it often gets. And she does it beautifully.

Very glamorous on the Locher Room "Capitol" reunion, and quite gracious and funny.

Constance Towers sounds like the only skyscraper in the fiction town of Constance, Colorado. It sits right next to their only car dealership.
