So Caroline and Albert have had some sort of falling out? I vaguely recall reading something to this effect in some royal blog last year, but I don't think a reason was given. A poster in Part 2 mentioned that they do not appear together at events. Is there any speculation as to why?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 5, 2019 8:53 PM |
Bump. I haven’t heard this about Caroline and Albert. Anyone have any info?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 5, 2019 11:18 PM |
Even though Caroline and Albert were born a year apart, they've always had different personalities. Caroline was more outgoing, sociable and bossy. Albert was quiet and shy. After their mother Princess Grace died, Caroline became the "First Lady" of Monaco. After their father Rainier died, Caroline rose even further and made numerous public appearances as the senior female in the princely family. This continued until Charlene arrived on the scene and she withdrew. Maybe the tension had something to do with that fact. Strangely enough, Albert is now closer to his younger sister Stephanie and has always defended her. I don't think Caroline is that close to her. That could be another reason for the cool down in their relationship.

More importantly, Letizia's outfit cost only £250 a fact that the Daily Mail had to print. Yet it looks as good or better than many of the astronomically priced designer frocks we've seen on some lately. Letizia doesn't have much of a choice given that the popularity of the Spanish monarchy is in decline and the unemployment rate hovers around 15%.

I know very little about the European royals, but I've been reading the Royal Confessions tumblr and it seems that Sweden's Princess Sofia is quite unpopular. Is it just because of her past as a topless model/reality TV star, or has she done anything controversial since marrying into the royal family?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 22, 2019 12:13 AM |
R75 It’s probably a little bit of the fact that she’s a former reality star/model, but I think a lot of it comes from the fact that she married one of the most handsome and desirable princes. You know what a jealous lot fraus are (see: The BRF thread on here)

R76 - I agree. Sofia has had the brains to turn "princess" quickly and I don't think she's done anything particularly embarrassing. I'm surprised they allowed him to marry her, just the same. I wonder if his father the King communicated to him what he really believed, that his son's birthright as the Heir was snatched away when Sweden did away with male primogeniture, and as a resutl Carl Philip felt they could stuff it, he'd marry whom he pleased. The hot piece with no class was, ironically, someone he could never have married if he had been the heir.
It was widely reported that the King was outraged at the change in the law that turned his son into a nonentity whilst Victoria was made Crown Princess. Those laws were changed after Victoria was born, and it was also widely reported that when she was born, the midwife announced, "It's a girl, they will have to try again."
In Spain, I think the laws haven't been changed yet. When then Queen Sofia's second child, another daughter (Infanta Cristina), was born, she reportedly turned her face to the wall and cried; in the event, the third was finally the much longed for son. And ex-King Juan Carlos was allged to be extremely disappointed that both his son's children were daughters.
Now, Infanta Leonor will be Spain's next Sovereign. Tempis fugit and all that.

Maybe the Swedes are more lax? I mean Victoria married her American physical trainer
by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 23, 2019 4:27 PM |

The Luxembourg grand ducal family all dolled up.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | June 24, 2019 12:52 PM |
R83 - Victoria's husband is Swedish - a bona fide Sweed born to Swedish parents in Orebro. His last name, the Anglo sounding "Westling", is misleading. And R82, he wasn't just her physical trainer. He owned a company called "Balancing Act" or something like that relating to physical therapy or fitness, and three gyms in central Stockholm.
Ahd he proved to be discreet, self-effacing, and very supportive of Victoria, who suffered from serious self-doubts and a long period of anorexia in her youth. He's no Meghan Markle, he's behaved impecaably and dutifully since their marriage.
That said, they probably weren't enthused about the match, class-wise. When the younger sister, Madeleine, married the classy Britiah-American financier with the hot educational creds, Queen Silvia, when asked for her reaction to the engagement, somewhat tactlessly gushed that she was ecstatic, what mother wouldn't be as O'Neill was any mother's "dream son-in-law".
It's ironic that only the youngest of the three Swedish royals married classy - that's not a put-down of Victoria's husband, who seems a very decent fellow, it's just the social fact.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 25, 2019 8:08 PM |
R101 - they're probably still hoping that they will eventually have a child or children. I've always suspected that that Guillaume and Stephanie's move to London was not just for continuing his studies (the reported reason) but to consult with fertility experts. That's just a hunch I have so don't ask me for evidence.

Princess Alexia of the Netherlands turns 14 years old today. I think she's the beauty in the family.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | June 26, 2019 12:04 PM |
R95 - I don't know where you get that idea about Mary. I think she looks happy as the proverbial pig. She absolutely loves the royal life, it radiates from her pores. She and Frederik look like they are rubbing along together reasonably well - he's always been a bit of a lazy, petulant type - it's the life and the work she wanted, and he got her that. Their four kids are terribly attractive and look like they're close with each other, and Mary comes out at the top of most of the Danish polls about their royals. I don't think she looks lonely at all. On the contrary, I think Mary is shrewd and sensible and wakes up every day thanking God for her fabulous life.

by Anonymous | reply 130 | July 1, 2019 9:02 PM |
R130 Pss. Marie looks so much like her sister-in-law it's scary. They share the same name, only one has the Anglo version and the other the French, and their birthdays are only a day or so apart. There were rumours Joachim was sweet on Mary when Frederik married her, and Joachim's first marriage was already on the rocks. Then after the divorce when Joachim turned up with Marie, with her startling similarity to Mary, there was quite a bit of snickering.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | July 1, 2019 11:29 PM |
R123 - I thought Caroline's first wedding dress was a huge disappointment - even her groom didn't like it. It was in my opinion a flat-footed attempt to create the illusion of a, er, maidenly virtue that was directly at odds with Caroline's flamboyant affair with Philippe Junot. She looked like a novitiate taking vows.
And her daughter's wedding dress is similarly rather comically demure for a woman both of whose children were born out of wedlock.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | July 1, 2019 11:41 PM |
I looooovvved Caroline's first wedding dress. But I agree about Charlotte's. Charlotte looks far more the jaded Euro-sophisticate than her mother did.

R133 - I might have been all right with the dress if the headdress had been less theatrically milkmaidy.
For the record, I hated Pss. Madeleine of Sweden's Valentino wedding gown for the same reason: it looked straight out of the Austrian Tyrol with the big bedskirt ruffle at the bottom. No elegance except for the tiara and veil. - really, with her looks, too!

Paola was one of the most beautiful aristas in Europe when he married her. Sigh. How cruel age is.

R142, she is 82 years old and she let herself grow old gracefully, no surgery, no fillers, no botox. She isn't that bad for her age and withher bad health in the last few years. They also spend most of the year on their yacht or at their villa in Italy, lots of sun and wind. Rather this way than having a clown face like Charlene of Monaco or Sylvia of Sweden.

I have never been particularly interested in fashion, but I absolutely love looking at the fabrics on these people. Every item of clothing is perfect. No stretching, staining, no worn sections, all beautiful, well tailored, comfortable looking.
I bet the royals get new bedsheets nightly, too, and that makes me jealous.

Queen Paola was indeed a beauty. I admire her decision to age naturally. Very zen.

R135, may I ask a question? I 'd rather ask DL than Wikipedia. What is the association between the House of Orange and the color orange? And, at this point, with the fruit itself? I'm actually serious: these things have confused me, and I've been too embarrassed to ask.

[quote]Just weeks after Charlotte Casiraghi said "I do" to her fiancé in the south of France, another one of Grace Kelly's grandchildren is planning a wedding. Louis Ducruet, the son of Monaco's Princess Stéphanie and her ex-husband Daniel Ducruet, is set to marry his former schoolmate, Marie Chevallier.
[quote]The couple met seven years ago, while attending SKEMA Business School in France together, and got engaged in 2018 following Ducruet's beachside proposal. He shared the news with a sweet Instagram post in February of last year. "Let me introduce you the future madame Ducruet," he wrote in a caption. "She said yes and we are now engaged."
