She gave brilliant performances in "Hilary and Jackie" and "Six Feet Under"—literally some of the most riveting acting I've ever seen. Her early role in "Muriel's Wedding" also gives her eternal street credit, but she sadly seems to have dropped off the radar today. I know she moved back to Australia and has been working there, but she doesn't really seem to be talked about much. I recall reading that she was in a Julian Assange TV biopic some years back, but I don't believe it was broadcast outside of Australia. I thought her Golden Globe for "Six Feet Under" would have secured her as a mainstay and potentially primed her for crossover fame like Toni Collette, but it just never happened.
Rachel and Emily Watson were both equally fantastic in Hilary & Jackie, and their Oscar noms were well-earned. I still think that was an underrated film that didn't really get the audience it deserved.

She's been back in Australia for quite a few years. She pops up in a lot of shows and movies.
Here's her directional debut. Looks like it might be quite good.

She wanted to raise her kids in Melbourne near family. Works regularly in Australia. I see her at the shops sometimes - a very normal person. I've no doubt she could get work in Hollywood again if she wanted it, and will probably pursue that when her kids are older.

She's deeply unpopular in the industry with a reputation for being difficult to work with and basically a complete bitch. A brilliant actress, yes, but not a very nice person. I don't know anyone who's met her who had a good word to say about the experience.

R4 I remember reading a post on one of the IMDb boards (when they existed) about someone encountering her in a shop and her being a dismissive cunt. I don't remember the circumstances exactly, but it did not paint a flattering portrait of her, assuming it was true. How did she earn a bad rep with industry people though? Is she a diva?

I hope she's a cunty like her Muriel's Wedding character

I met her when she did "Other Desert Cities" with Stockard Channing and Judith Light. Her parents, Stockard Channing and Stacy Keach had worked in the Reagan administration. The family gathered in Palm Springs for the holidays and Rachel Griffiths character has to reveal to the family that she has written a tell-all book. Judith Light was the aunt, always in and out of rehab. It was a great play. She didn't have her Australian accent offstage either, which seemed odd.
My ex boyfriend and I would have entire conversations just quoting Brenda from SFU.

After Brothers & Sisters, she ran in the Kentucky Derby and now holds macaroni to construction paper.

Probably easier to maintain an American accent for performance by doing it all the time as opposed to switching it on and off, R7.

She was incredible as Brenda Chenowith. I've watched the entire series twice and occasionally put on a random episode. I still marvel at how she fused excellent writing with her acting skills, creating such a troubled and complex character.

Brenda was one of the greatest characters ever.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 2, 2019 1:16 PM |
A brilliant actor.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 2, 2019 1:37 PM |
Completely agree about her portrayal of Brenda Chenowith. That was a complex, well-written role from the start, but she really inhabited that character and was able to navigate all those complexities quite brilliantly.

Is Rachel actually that big of a bitch? I've seen a few interviews and she seems like a no-nonsense person, but I wouldn't have imagined her being a legit cunt in real life.

Her American accent in R7's video is flawless; it was flawless on Six Feet Under as well.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 3, 2019 3:22 AM |
The only time I've ever thought her accent was off was during the bankruptcy storyline on Brothers and Sisters. She didn't say "bankruptcy" with an American accent. She would always say ban-kruptcy, and with a slight accent.

I just have to mention Joanna Cassidy as Brenda's mother, the most fabulous crazy bitch ever.

How old are you again, R16? Brothers and Sisters was a decade ago.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 3, 2019 4:06 AM |
I'm 30 and Six Feet Under started well before that in 2001.

I miss hearing Nate saying “Brenda, what the fuck?”
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 3, 2019 3:08 PM |
I can't believe it's been almost TWENTY years since Six Feet Under debuted. Wow.

I remember Peter Krause saying in an interview something to the effect of, Griffiths was a nightmare to work with, but she was so brilliant they just put up with it. Women in Hollywood who get a rep for being difficult generally end up getting drummed out, no matter how talented they are. They don't get the same number of chances as men. Add in her age, and I'm guessing she would have difficulty making a comeback.

Why did this thread pop up on my watch list? I've never heard of this woman, much less watched a thread about her.

Who is Rachel Whoever?

Neither I nor anyone else posting possibly knows nor cares. So why the fuck are you asking us? Only Muriel knows.

Who is Rachel? what is she,
That all our swains commend her?

I love her and often get her confused with Juliet Lewis. She is wonderful actor. Who knows if she is a cunt, LA/Hollywood can really make people crazy.

Brenda got a lot of hate on TWOP (and here IIRC) when SFU was on, so I’m surprised to see so much admiration. I agree, she was one of the greatest TV characters ever. Not always likable but always compelling.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 14, 2019 1:05 AM |
Fighting on set with Peter Krause doesn't mean much. Krause always either fights with or sleeps with his leading ladies.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 14, 2019 1:06 AM |
Griffiths seems authentic. Sexy and intelligent.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 14, 2019 2:42 AM |
My brother fucked her a couple times. He liked her. He liked that type.

Ok R33. They had sex, so what? People have sex, not a big deal.

I care that your brother fucked her, r33.

I saw Rachel Griffiths in the lauded but unbelievably AWFUL Broadway production of the Jon Robin Baitz play "Other Desert Cities". She was TERRIBLE. The show was poorly directed tripe and there were other lousy performances in it (Stacy Keach), but none as bad as Griffiths'. I was surprised that she had no stage chops!

I’ve spent time with her a number of times - we have friends in common, although I wouldn’t call us friends.
She’s a fucking cool Aussie chick.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 14, 2019 5:09 AM |
I expect she isn’t a bitch, she’s just not a fawning American type saying everything is fucking brilliant all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 14, 2019 7:01 AM |
LOL, R39. Yeah, kind of like that.
