Because, while he is undeniably talented and, in my opinion, pretty dreamy-looking (except when he is singing high notes and makes that really odd ugly face he does), he also comes across as a disingenuous, overly-ambitious fake. Now - in terms of his ambition and eagerness to be liked he is really no different from 95% of the performers in show business -- but he doesn't seem able to hide it as well as many of his peers. He's always "on" - always everybody's buddy / always a little unbelievably modest. I think many successful successful performers manage to give the public some glimpse of who they are behind the public persona, while not ignoring the fact that thy need to stay liked.

So - he comes across as fake. Which, in terms of the DL audience, makes it more annoying when he seems to be playing right on the edge of that "am I a cute millennial straight guy who appreciates my gay fans or am I really a closeted theater queen desperately trying to hide with my beard of a wife?" dichotomy. I think he sort of hasn't grown out of being that talented high school kid who desperately needs EVERYONE to love him. That stops being even a little charming once you've left your teens. He might do well to do a couple of things (a bar fight? a sleazy sex affair? a slight drug problem? ) that sort of let the public know that he can be a jackass and make mistakes like we all do sometimes. Maybe he should go hang out with Shia LeBoeuf for a month or two.

the way he played his hand and became a household name was genius. He hired a huge publicist when he got Glee. He did the talkshow circuit when he was only to be on 3 or 4 episodes. He was the only person promoting the show. He created buzz around himself and his character and literally forced the producers to hire him full time. I think he was good on Versace, but Versace was a bad show. I was really surprised at the award season lovefest, in my country the reviews were from mediocre to bad (but all praised Criss job).

I still think he made a big mistake with the big proclamation. If he thought gay roles should be played by gay actors he should refuse playing gay roles without any big proclamation (specially because it made him look an hypocrite). But the worst part is that it was not a wise decision. Maybe the next big role he is offered is a gay role, maybe on a film, and now he has to refuse to play it or give tons of explanations when if his attitude was sincere it would be more than enough not playing those roles anymore.

I wouldn't say I hate him, as much I get annoyed with his whole situation, and subsequent success, which comes across as largely overhyped and a bit fabricated. What shot him to soaring heights was Ryan Murphy vehicles. While arguably entertaining, RM shows are basically fluffy, puffy, cotton candy shows that use the basics of storytelling to create something people want to watch (basically shoving hot half-nude dudes to entice fraus and gays). And there's nothing wrong with that. Sexy boys and girls showing skin and drugs and murder all make for an interesting media experience. And the Versace thing was good, beautifully decorated, lit and shot, and for the most part, all actors did just fine, including Criss. But I wont go so far as to praise it on the same level as something like, say, Breaking Bad. Most of what RM writes if pretty boy/girl fluff. In the same vein, I love Anna Faris, I think she's gorgeous, hilarious and just a whole lot of fun. But I'm not about to go and put her in the same category as Katherine Hepburn. or her movies as on par with Citizen Kane. She's great at what she does, but what she does is low hanging fruit. I feel the same way about Criss, yeah, he does well at what he does, but what he does is pretty basic. And that's why I tend to get annoyed with him. He's just not the talent he, and his fans, make him out to be. I thought he was good in Versace, but certainly not award-worthy (nothing RM does is worthy of awards).
