What's your favorite song from a Disney film?

Here's mine. I love it! Bolton sings it beautifully. It always makes me cry. LOVE!

Bolton is a guilty pleasure for me. He has sung a lot of sappy songs. But his voice is great and sometimes her knocks it home (when the song is not too sappy or bombastic.) Given all the duets Streisand has done over the years, I'm surprised she never did one with him. He is one of the few with a popular voice big enough to match hers. She usually modulates to the person she is singing with. She could let it fly with him. Of course they would have to pick the right song!

It was also the best overall Disney theme park show I've seen.

Growing up I had an unhealthy obsession with Aladdin (probably because I thought he was hot, the movie was great too though-to be fair).

Used to listen to "Friend Like Me" RELIGIOUSLY. I would even get a sheet of paper and tear it in half synched up to when Genie would sing "and LET IT RIP!" while he rips up a contract.

R30, those aren't the lyrics. The lyrics at the end are:

I ask for nothing, I can get by.

But I know so many less lucky than I.

Please help my people, the poor and downtrod.

I thought we all were the children of God.

God help the outcast children of God.

From that same movie, I don't know if I would call these my favorites but I love the juxtaposition of songs later in that movie, where Quasimodo sings plaintively about how he would never know the glow of "Heaven's Light," then a verse of the priests/monks in the church singing, seguing seamlessly into Frollo's "Hellfire."

Another that I'm not sure I'd call my favorite but is both memorable and notable for how it begins the movie and sets everything up for what follows is "The Circle of Life" from "The Lion King."

Guess you heard they are taking the Siamese song out of future releases of the movie. Which I kind of hate. It's a breed of CATS, for Chrissakes.

by Anonymousreply 152June 5, 2019 9:27 PM

It's not the word that's the problem, it's the racist-ass accent they sing in.

I wonder if they'll take "Song of the Roustabouts" out of Dumbo. I'm sorry, but a song sung by faceless black men about being happy to "slave away" which also contains the line "Grab that rope, you hairy ape" has no business being in a children's movie.

by Anonymousreply 153June 5, 2019 9:32 PM

DUMBO also has Jim Crow and his song "Did You Ever See An Elephant Fly"?

by Anonymousreply 154June 5, 2019 9:34 PM

The Aristocats revisited that Siamese caricature in "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat".

[quote]Guess you heard they are taking the Siamese song out of future releases of the movie.

That reminds me of when they digitally erased Pecos Bill's cigarette from MELODY TIME when it was released on home video in the late '90s, including an entire sequence where he lights up his cigarette with a lighting bolt. I remember the critic at the time (I think it was EW) making a flippant remark about it.

Have they cut this bit from SNOW WHITE yet?

Wow, Disney sure was racist against Asians. Movie after movie after movie. What was Disney’s problem?!

by Anonymousreply 158June 5, 2019 10:20 PM

I don't think it was considered racist then. Just like patting a woman's behind wasn't seen as sexual harassment.

by Anonymousreply 159June 5, 2019 10:29 PM

I'm fond of Jiminy Cricket singing Give A Little Whistle to Pinocchio, but for the wrong reason. Except for "always let your conscience be your guide," the lyrics could be interpreted as "hey, if you're feeling immoral, hit me up."

Jeremy Jordan should be a Disney prince. His Disney medley covers all my favorites and he performs them better than the originals, including the songs originally sung by women..

He's basically a Disney prince with Newsies, no?

by Anonymousreply 162June 5, 2019 11:24 PM

I don't know, it's still weird. We can make fun of French people and their accents in every movie and nobody cares (why should they?). Southern people. Jersey. Boston. On and on. But two CATS singing in a rather heightened accent is bad enough to destroy a classic film with butchery? Annoying shit.

by Anonymousreply 163June 6, 2019 12:48 AM

It's too hard to limit it to one. Judy Kuhn just killing it on "Colors of the Wind;" "Part of Your World;" "Candle on the Water;" and "Feed the Birds" are all fantastic.

R163 it's because SJWs now control Hollywood. Anything that makes fun of white people is fine, but people of color are off limits.

by Anonymousreply 167June 6, 2019 1:45 AM

Thanks, R165. She has such a beautiful, instantly recognizable, distinctive voice.

by Anonymousreply 168June 6, 2019 1:50 AM

No mention of Donna Murphy's "Mother Knows Best" and its reprise from "Tangled"? It's a fun song which will get stuck in your head, not a bad thing at all. Murphy just nails it. I actually prefer it over the other villain songs.

by Anonymousreply 169June 6, 2019 5:14 PM

The Siamese Cat song doesn't even make fun of Siamese people. It doesn't even make fun of Siamese cats.

Anyway, Julie Andrews' "Feed The Birds" chokes me up every time.

I still can't believe that wasn't the film's Oscar-nominated song. It was even Walt's favorite. Instead, "Chim Chim Cher-ee" got the nod and the win.

LOL, R176 —that’s me posted the song so many times! It was never showing up as posted, so I kept reposting! Cannot figure out how or why this happened, only thing I can think of if maybe I blocked myself?! Anyhow, sorry to be pest, folks, and thanks again for the huge laugh, R176!

by Anonymousreply 178June 6, 2019 10:53 PM

Can't believe I've never seen Hunchback, the songs posted here are wonderful.

r18, that is a fantastic villain song.

r119, whilst I agree the song is great, I immediately thought of 'Part of your World' from The Little Mermaid. Obviously the themes of the songs are the same but that middle section sounds very similar.

by Anonymousreply 179June 7, 2019 2:44 AM

R179 you should definitely watch HUNCHBACK. Highly underrated! Gorgeous animation, too!

by Anonymousreply 180June 7, 2019 2:46 AM

Hunchback is definitely worth seeing. A couple of knockout numbers, and I love that shot that starts as a Quasimodo close-up and then just flies back for the wide shot.

by Anonymousreply 181June 7, 2019 2:50 AM

Hunchback is essential Disney. It's underrated, but I've noticed people are starting to realize how great it is. Here's "Sanctuary" by Alan Menken. Not a song, but a part of the score, and probably one of the finest pieces the man has ever written. I love his scores, but this is the only score that allowed him to get dark and lush. The rest of his scores have a lighter feel, but there's so much substance to this one.

The soundtrack of Hunchback is great, but the ending isn’t. It reinforces that the natural order is for the good looking guy to get the girl and the ugly guy gets, at best, pity.

Love the Gospel Truths. The narrator's, "You go girls," is wonderful. You'll see though that the Hercules soundtrack has been getting tons of love. "Zero to Hero" has been posted a couple times, and someone shouted out "I Won't Say I'm In Love" as well.

I love "Friends on the Other Side". Keith David's voice is exceptional.
