I was watching "Black Christmas" the other night and it struck me how handsome he was. Was he considered hot back in the '60s–'70s? I was reading his filmography and saw he was in several major Hollywood films in his youth (i.e. "Portrait in Black") before he wound up doing exploitation stuff, which I'd not known before. I think he was extremely sexy—great features, a booming voice, and a nice hairy chest. Any fans?
Here's John apparently at age 75, so around 8 years ago now. From the looks of this, his body appears to be in great shape.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 30, 2019 8:22 AM |
He starred with Esther Williams in The Unguarded Moment (1956) but the idea that John as a gorgeous high school football player would have no girlfriend and has to lust after Esther is ludicrous.

He was one of those discovered by the evil preditory hollywood agent Henry Willson at age 15 no less............his parents signed away permission fo him at age 15 to go off to hollywood unescorted and Willson was his benefactor. Whatever he went thru to attain a certain measure of fame and longevity in hollywood didnt seem to have any lasting negative effects.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 30, 2019 5:16 PM |
He does have Alzheimers, sadly enough. He and his wife moved into a retirement home a few years and ago and they held a film festival to honor him and his wife was answering all the questions for him about his career while he sat there looking a bit lost. It was sad.
He was in big demand at horror conventions for his roles in The Nightmare on Elm Street series, but is no long do them due to his condition.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 30, 2019 5:27 PM |
Are you nuts, op? Who doesn’t know about Saxon and about how hot he was? Elm Street, Black Christmas, Enter the Dragon...he was in a ton of cult films. I met him about a decade or so ago at a convention, and he was a very sweet man. I got him to sign this photo for me (notice the VPL)....

Former Henry Willson "client"
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 30, 2019 8:07 PM |
Real name Carmine Orrico from Brooklyn. According to Wikipedia and "The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson", Orrico signed with Willson at age 17, not 15. A late friend of mine swears that he discovered Carmine (or Carmen) on the beach in Brooklyn and he was his lover and that he introduced him to Henry Willson. This friend was a very effeminate former drag queen and opera singer. I think Saxon did what he had to to have a career.
Anyway, as an impressionable adolescent I saw him on TV in this failed pilot "Brave New World" with gay co-star Keene Curtis - Saxon wore a red toga that showed off his hairy chest. Even with the receding hairline, Saxon is HOT.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 30, 2019 8:34 PM |
He's sexy and adorable as Sandra Dee's boy friend in one of his true A list films, 1958's The Reluctant Debutante, starring Rex Harrison, a fabulous Kay (Mrs. Harrison) Kendall and Angela Lansbury and directed by Vincente Minnelli.
Not to hijack his thread but that film is a must-see for DLers if they've never seen Kay Kendall, a brilliant beautiful comedienne who died far too young.

R18 he did the nighttime soap scene in the 80s, as a Prince on Dynasty (I think he slept with Joan Collins/Alexis) and as Lance Cumson's father, Tony, on Falcon Crest
He was also on the daytime soap Another World in 1985 I believe
And of course in the first and third A Nightmare on Elm Street film

OMFG, John Saxon is gorgeous in The Reluctant Debutante. He has absolutely no chemistry with Sandra Dee, but that's a minor detail. I actually love this movie. Angela Lansbury is fucking great, and of course Kay Kendall is perfection. She had leukemia but didn't know it, and Rex Harrison divorced his wife and married Kendall to take care of her during the last years of her life. Rather touching. If you're a Kay Kendall fan make sure you see her in Once More With Feeling, with Yul Brynner. This is her last movie, and she's luminous in it, and very, very funny.

I have no opinion on Mr Carmine Orrico except that he was useful in those days when Hollywood needed people to play random ethnic people (David Lean wanted a German to play an Arab)

Saxon always had a nice body. I think he worked out a lot, and the martial arts stuff certainly helped keep his physique well-maintained through middle age. He looked his best when he was in his forties/fifties IMO. Him shirtless, showing off his hairy chest certainly gave me tingling in my nether regions back in the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if the photo in R11 and R41 was cropped. Lots of aspiring young actors posed full-frontal for the physique photographers of the era. They were new to California, they needed money, and the photographers any have been the first people to notice them for any type of film work.

I definitely remember who Kay Francis is, only because she played opposite Cary Grant and Carole Lombard in one of my favorites, In Name Only. A rare-ish dramatic turn for both Lombard and Grant.
Kay Kendall I know of only by name associated with Rex Harrison. Sounds like I need to learn more about her.
John Saxon I think I know from The Bold Ones. Nevertheless, it was a great 70s drama series.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 6, 2019 11:14 PM |
I think Lombard was a friend of Francis, whose career was a bit down then, and helped her get the part. Lombard was a good egg. Had she lived, she'd have wised up to Gable.

Kay's nose was always absurd.
That's why this movie failed. Because Robert Taylor was haggard and because Kay Kendall and Robert Merely are natural comedians incapable of seriousness.

by Anonymous | reply 112 | July 18, 2019 3:53 AM |
R112 Taylor was pretty in 1937 when he had a lovely patrician nose when seen in profile. But he married that 'bell-laid' Stannick woman and it was all downhill after that.
Taylor was dragged out of mothballs in 1950 when Greg Peck refused to play in 'Quo Vadis'. So the haggard Taylor played in that, 'Ivanhoe' and that mess mentioned in R111.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | July 18, 2019 4:00 AM |
The one role - only one - that I found Robert Taylor plausible, even good, was as the doomed mop top Beau in the ridiculous movie The Gorgeous Hussy (1936) with Joannie Crawford. Also in the cast are Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas, James Stewart and Franchot Tone. Otherwise, Taylor was the worst actor of any "movie star" who ever lived. Stanwyck was teaching him and teaching him, coaching him on every role, but it all fell on deaf ears.

John Saxon is proof that DL has some very conflicted feelings. I've struggled to understand what 'non-adjacent' meant. You WASP-y white boys didn't like being attracted to those amazingly attractive Italian-American guys in your own back yard. I didn't grow up there, and never had a conflict. I still have dreams about my Italian-American boo (I won't name him, since I know he's on-line) and I have an ever better boyfriend (who loves me back).

Meh. He had nothing on John Gavin - same era, same look, ethnic - seen here in Kubrick's "Spartacus" with Charles Laughton.
Big roles, too: Psycho, Imitation of Life, Back Street, Midnight Lace
Universal groomed Gavin as a leading man in the mold of Rock Hudson. He trained in Jess Kimmel's talent workshop under the name John Gilmore. His classmates included Grant Williams, Gia Scala and John Saxon
Stanford grad, Naval officer, President of SAG and US Ambassador to Mexico, too

Saxon. We're talking Saxon, not Gavin. Gavin is another thread. He was like a mannequin. He was hot. He looked beautiful. But he had no talent. Could not act to save his life. And no personality. He was like ...Mitt Romney in the movies. John Saxon, on the other hand had charm, he had an easy grace about him. Very natural. And he had an edge. Just a bit dangerous. John Saxon was serious hotness.

When I was a young Gehling in the mid-70s, I hooked up with an older guy, and during pillow talk afterwards he told me about a couple of gay actors he used to know that were on their way up the ladder.
One of them was John Saxon, who I have not heard of before but was now interested in following his career, and the other one was Jay Thomas, whom he said had been a DJ but was now acting, and also quite gay.

Was there anyone Willson represented who wasn't gay or at least gay for pay?
by Anonymous | reply 144 | October 16, 2019 5:53 AM |
Perhaps R144. But they were in the distinct minority. If you read the Willson biography, all of the actors who were still alive said they never did it w/the greasy man. But I would not be surprised Robert Wagner DID, as he at first tried to deny he was ever a Willson client.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 16, 2019 7:01 AM |
according to the book about willson several of his straight proteges quote unquote did succumb to willson for carreer reasons and some gay ones did not. It seemed like looking at the list about 1/2 of the clients were gay. He didnt hit on robert wagner as wagner came from an upper class calif family and willson considered him offlimits. John Saxon was just 17 when he entered Willson s world and willson may have considerred him too young to take advantage of............. Rock Hudson was Willsons main claim to fame and willson and hudson did hook up repeatedly early on. Hudson married Henry Willson s office secretary. Hudson and Willson even shared an apartment after Hudson became famous that was just a trick pad that each used separately. It was a non discript dump used just for sex located on Cuhenga Blvd not too far from the hollywood bowl. Hudson apparently would fuck anybody regardless of looks and Willson only went after the beauties. Another huge favorite of his boys was Guy Madison who Willson broadcast was not well endowed. Willson is actually an interesting case study in hollywood of the 40 s and 50 s. He was the classic hollywood agent who used the casting couch but it was for men, not women. He did represent lana turner for a while in addition to the male pinups. The most common term used to descrie Willson was evil........Hudson described Willson as having a big ego..whatever that entails.

John Saxon was always seriously sexy!
He was on a very funny “Mary Tyler Moore” as Phyllis’s platonic escort to cultural events. Phyllis was miffed when Saxon started dating Mary, but all was forgiven when Saxon announced his engagement to an old girlfriend: “I hope that you and Sharon will be as happy in your marriage as LARS is in ours!”

I’ve always wondered about another Wilsson client, Laramie’s John Smith. Gorgeous, tall blonde drink of water with luscious lips and an ever-present bulge. He was briefly married to actress Luana Patten in the ‘60s and never had kids, although he was rumored to have a daughter, it was never confirmed. Luana filed for divorce citing John’s habit of disappearing for days on end without ever explaining where he’d been. A Brokeback “fishing trip” situation, maybe?

John Smith’s real name, Robert Errol Van Orden, was wonderful and tailor made for an actor. Willson suggested he change it because there were no other John Smiths in show biz. After Laramie, he did the film Circus World with John Wayne. The director of that film reportedly hated Smith so much that he vowed to ruin his career. Smith still went on to act for many years afterwards, but his career never reached its potential. I think he might’ve been gay.

Not surprised. He didn't always photograph that well even when young.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | October 16, 2019 10:42 PM |
That Henry Wilsson didn't write an autobiography is one of the world's biggest losses. Think of all the stories he could tell! And we'd finally know which of the "clients" actually put out to get ahead.

I never paid much attention to John Smith - too boyish for me - but his Laramie co-star, Robert Fuller, was gorgeous.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | October 17, 2019 6:10 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 17, 2019 9:05 AM |
I’ve met Robert Fuller at several conventions, sat and had a talk and a drink with him, and a nicer man you will not met. He’s still a rascal and very spry for his age, loves Cabernet and is full of stories about his time as an actor. He has a rabid fandom who follow him to every convention that he does, some of them (mostly women) even come over from other countries. He’s a cowboy through and through. His favorite role was Jess Harper from Laramie. And yes, he was gorgeous.

The obvious comb-over detracted from his good looks. He already had it in Black Christmas in 1974. Handsome face and body, to be sure, but the comb-over was a no go.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | October 17, 2019 3:57 PM |
The comb-over wasn't great, but he was still hot in Black Christmas as far as I'm concerned. Handsome face, nice body, and that VOICE. My god. Just listening to him talk is enough to give me a raging boner.

John Saxon and James Darren had decent acting chops and could have developed into something if the assholes of Hollywood had not insisted they become arm candy for Sandra Dee making ridiculous romantic comedies. Darren made one decent movie where he showed he had something more in him, with Shelley Winters, and Saxon made some movie with Esther Williams where he played a villain type character. Saxon worked a lot more than Darren and I think as he aged out of his rom Com garbage he began to show he could do more. Darren, as I heard, ended up being drunk and decided to do a night club act. He fancied himself a crooner like Sinatra.

I remember seeing Black Christmas years ago at the New Beverly Theater in Los Angeles, way before QT purchased it.
John Saxon, Olivia Hussey, and Bob Clark (the director) Olivia was radiant, Bob was funny but John seemed out of it. I did say hi to him and shook his hand. That was over 10 years so me must be worse
What's really messed up is that this was during the Christmas season and a week later the director and his son were killed by a drink driver in Malibu. 😢

I met him about ten years ago at an autograph show (don’t judge, DL!). It was nice to meet him, and he was friendly and not addled or out of it. Looked good, too! It was interesting to chat about some of the folks he’s worked with (Rex Harrison & Kay Kendall, Marlon Brando, Otto Preminger). Sorry to hear he’s not well.

Phyllis Gates, Henry Willson's secretary and of course Rock's wife described Willson as "a bitch in heat." She said this when she was secretly recording a very revealing conversation with Rock. She made the recording towards the end of their marriage. She got a private detective to bug the house. Leverage in the upcoming divorce. Gates asked Rock how long he had been a homo, was he a queer when they married etc. Very damning stuff. Rock hadn't a clue!
Anyway she was (on tape) aghast at Rock's continuing loyalty to a sleazeball like Willson, hence the bitch in heat jibe, she was hypocritical piece of work.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | October 28, 2019 9:35 PM |
Rock should have married a nice lesbian actor - someone with the same amount to lose.

by Anonymous | reply 188 | October 28, 2019 9:41 PM |
Gates' ghostwriter probably came up with "bitch in heat."
by Anonymous | reply 189 | October 28, 2019 9:41 PM |
Gates didn't expose Rock during the divorce. But she let him know she had the tapes. Years afterwards, when Hudson had no obligation to her whatsoever, Gates would send Hudson her bills - dry cleaning, car repairs etc, along with insinuating little notes. Blackmail, basically. Hudson paid without a fuss.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | October 28, 2019 10:10 PM |
She took quite a chance. Hudson was a big earner for most of his career. She could have been offed quite easily.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | October 28, 2019 10:25 PM |
Hudson realised his career would wane in the early 60s when he didn't that ugly, weird movie called 'Seconds".
This movie may have contained a blurred penis or two but it mocked everything he had done up until then.
His career may have stopped in 1962 — just like what happened to "Tab Hunter' around the same time.

Yes, I've seen ELM STREET. How large is his role in that? It can't be too significant.
Of the adults, I remember Ronee Blakley and Robert Englund (who I always thought was Mr. Cloris Leachman...but she was actually married to a George Englund.)
