The Expanse

Anyone else watching this dreck? Hard to believe that it's on its third season, given that it must be one of the worst sc-fi shows ever made. Eye-candy in Steven Straight, but that's about it.

And, it's weirdly homophobic -- no gay men, and one of the spacecraft is named after one of the most homophobic politicians in NYC history, Guy Molinari. As reported in Wikipedia:

"In 1994, a week before the statewide elections, Molinari announced his view that Karen Burstein, the Democratic nominee for New York Attorney General, was not qualified to serve as attorney general because she was a lesbian. The combination of Molinari's remarks, a strong national Republican showing, and the win of George Pataki in the governor's race, led to Republican Dennis Vacco's narrowly defeating Burstein.[5] The New York Times called his remarks "gutter politics".

Seasons 1 and 2 were pretty great. Shohreh Aghdashloo is amaaaazing in it. I actually think it’s a pretty great series but haven’t admittedly watched S3 yet. Is S4 on Amazon already?

So what if there isn’t a gay character. The first season involved a lot of Mormons I guess.

by Anonymousreply 1May 29, 2019 12:38 AM

I read the first book and thought it was garbage.

by Anonymousreply 2May 29, 2019 12:40 AM

Once Thomas Jane (Miller) was off the show, it was boring. Too much hard to follow politics, when I can't even tell Martians and Belters apart.

by Anonymousreply 3May 29, 2019 12:44 AM

It's one of the best sci-fi shows out there and we've been promised more of Steven Strait's naked ass in the fourth season coming to Amazon this year.

But yes, I've been bitching about the lack of gay guys since the first season.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2019 12:48 AM

I had heard the hype and gave it a try. Couldn't even make it through the first three episodes. Terrible show.

by Anonymousreply 5May 29, 2019 12:53 AM

First half of first season does feel tonally off and quite unlike the rest of the show, in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 6May 29, 2019 12:58 AM

I think it's one of the best science fiction adaptations ever. The story just keeps expanding, just like humans in space.

by Anonymousreply 7May 29, 2019 1:00 AM

I'm like 85% sure R7 works for the studio

by Anonymousreply 8May 29, 2019 1:01 AM

The seasons get progressive more boring... Season one builds up to a nice climax. Season two kind of blows its wad early. Couldn't even finish Season three. I don't even think Strait's ass would have helped.

by Anonymousreply 9May 29, 2019 1:04 AM

I just binge watched season 3. I actually started watching it a few months ago but couldn't get into it and only managed to watch one or two episodes. However last week after getting Amazon Prime Video again I checked out what I feel about it now and ended up watching all the remaining episodes in a few days.

It's not a perfect show but it's probably the best hard scifi-show I've ever seen. I totally get why some people don't like it, since I've been on the fence myself many times. But they've managed to create a very believable future world and there's something fascinating about it. I actually just bought the first novel in the series because I wanted to get back into that world.

None of the main characters are gay but I vaguely remember an elderly gay couple from season 1. There's an annoying minor gay character on season 3. I'd like to think the nice psycho crew member might be slightly gay although if I remember correctly from earlier season he said he's not, but he spent his childhood among gay people and can't stand anyone harassing them. The woman below from season 3 is a lezzie.

Season 4 principal photography finished already back in February but Amazon has not revealed the release date. They've only said it will come out in late 2019.

R8, The Expanse has a huge fan following. They are the ones who got Amazon to pick up the show after SyFy had canceled it.

r8 That poster provided one impression in this thread, which happens to be different to yours and he's suddenly a studio shill? Paranoid much?

by Anonymousreply 11May 29, 2019 1:06 AM

Oh calm down R11. I mostly made that comment because this line:
The story just keeps expanding, just like humans in space.

An obvious play on the title of the show. It seemed really corny

by Anonymousreply 12May 29, 2019 1:07 AM
I don't even think Strait's ass would have helped.

Who are you kidding, of course it would have. He has the tautest bod with the lowest % of body fat in the whole of showbiz. I want to drag my ass on his shredded abs so bad.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2019 1:08 AM

Fuck off, R12. Sincerely, R7.

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2019 1:11 AM
But they've managed to create a very believable future world and there's something fascinating about it.

r10 That's exactly the thing I love most about this show. There are so many moments that make me go "It totally makes sense that things would be like that in the (near) future." A lot of sci-fi shows either take it too far so it doesn't feel as grounded, or only tweak the costumes and some gadgets a bit so it looks pretty much like our present, spruced up a bit. But the entire society in this show is so well thought-out, I just love visiting their world.
I'd like to think the nice psycho crew member might be slightly gay although if I remember correctly from earlier season he said he's not, but he spent his childhood among gay people and can't stand anyone harassing them.

I was so hoping he'd be the one but of course they didn't go there because SyFy.
The woman below from season 3 is a lezzie.

I adore her - the character and the actress - and while I'm happy for the lesbians, it of course isn't enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2019 1:15 AM

R12, anyone who's finished season 3 understands perfectly what R7 meant.

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2019 1:16 AM

r12 I'm perfectly calm. Perhaps actually explain what you meant next time in the post itself as most of us aren't operating telepathically?

by Anonymousreply 17May 29, 2019 1:25 AM

I love Steven Strait and that would be my only reason to watch it. How much exactly is he in there? Is he in like every episode?

by Anonymousreply 18May 29, 2019 1:29 AM

r18 Pretty much, yes.

And while I love his body, he's only passable as an actor, in my opinion. He just looks sleepy to me in most of his scenes.

by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2019 1:33 AM

R15, Amos' sexuality is left as a mystery in the books too. It's clear he's had a variety of experiences, and is completely comfortable with everyone else as well.

by Anonymousreply 20May 29, 2019 2:07 AM
And while I love his body, he's only passable as an actor

Shut your whore mouth, R19.

And thanks.

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2019 2:20 AM

This is my favorite Sci-Fi by far. I may say my favorite TV show, even beating GoT. I love the realism, it is how our society would be in 200 years.

by Anonymousreply 22May 29, 2019 2:55 AM

R18 But he's playing such a "straight" man in this series... he's actually boring to watch. He's essentially every "white male hero" who saves the day or broods over his failure stereotype.

by Anonymousreply 23May 29, 2019 2:56 AM

r23 Yes, that's what I wanted to say, i.e. he's only passable as an actor [italic]in this show;[/italic] I haven't really seen him in anything else so can't speak to that. He's broing it up way too much and so any nuance to his character gets pretty much lost in that. He's by far the least interesting character of the bunch because of that.

It's a great sci-fi show but would be a great show overall if only the people were fleshed out better. They are trying to do that now with that lady from Lost and I'm enjoying it a lot more as a result.

by Anonymousreply 24May 29, 2019 11:03 AM
I may say my favorite TV show, even beating GoT. I love the realism, it is how our society would be in 200 years.

This is why I totally love this show. They had a seminar with scientists and physicists at JPL and they liked a lot of the scientific realism and accuracy of the show, for example, gravity and how people's bodies would change with zero gravity and how humans travel in a spaceship at accelerating speeds.. Season 1 is a little slow but it picks up steam in the second half of season 2 and then takes off like a rocket in Season 3. The last season was my favorite-- there was so much political intrigue, action and otherworldly storyline that was mind-blowing. The universe itself is mind-blowing as a matter of fact.

The fans worked hard to get this show picked up by Amazon. I do think it's better than GOT. It's a show for intelligent people and not for Marvel Comic fans.

by Anonymousreply 25May 29, 2019 12:09 PM

r25 Agreed with everything you said. And season 4 is going to be amazing without those network restrictions in place - grittier and sexier than ever. I heard Shohreh's voice got even deeper to the point that it's now subsonic and subtitles are mandatory for all her scenes. You know what, I'll just let Ana Navarro sum it up for me...

What do you consider the best sci-fi shows?

by Anonymousreply 27May 29, 2019 12:32 PM

Is Steven Strait what DL calls white adjacent?

by Anonymousreply 28May 30, 2019 12:05 AM

He's half Italian but is pasty as fuck. So no, not adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 29May 30, 2019 12:06 AM
He's half Italian but is pasty as fuck.

He doesn’t look pasty at all.

by Anonymousreply 30May 30, 2019 12:16 AM

He does very much look pale as a ghost in this show, especially when you put him next to Cas Anvar or Dominique Tipper. Probably because of the cool blue-white lights being used most of the time.

He’s so cute.

by Anonymousreply 32May 30, 2019 12:21 AM

He does look rosier in real life, under more natural lighting conditions.

r32 He really, really is.

by Anonymousreply 33May 30, 2019 12:23 AM

R33 He is the hottest attainable, yet obviously straight actor currently in the universe.

I love Amos. I love the Roci crew, Drummer and Chrisjen. I love that Jared Harris is part of the show - he usually is in fantastic shows. I binged the show when I was sick and now I'm watching it for the third time. Season one is slower because of the world-building but it get's better and better. My favorite show in a long time.

by Anonymousreply 37September 16, 2019 8:02 AM

To me it's like Game of Thrones in space, but in a good way. The show runners did a fantastic job during their run on SyFy. And I know Amazon is not everybody's favorite (and I still resent them a bit for dropping the ball on The Collection), but there seems to be good word of mouth about the coming season.

by Anonymousreply 38September 16, 2019 9:23 AM

The funny thing is, R38, that Bezos reminds me a lot of Jules Pierre Mao. Him or the Tesla guy (I forgot his name).
