Black Swan
No matter how many times I have watched this movie, I will never quite understand the relationship between the mother (Erica) and daughter (Nina). It seemed kind of incestuous at times. Like when Erica manipulates Nina into eating the cake. She sticks a finger full of frosting in Nina's mouth and seems to really enjoy it. That isn't normal at all. Or when she insists on putting Nina to bed and watching her sleep. When Nina goes out with her friend, Erica waits up to confront Nina like a jealous lover. What was Aronofsky going for here?
Oh and Mila was much better than Natalie. Wonder why she didn't get more credit.

It was supposed to be of a girl growing into a woman. The mom still treats her like a little kid but she is trying to grow up, emotionally/sexually.

Mila Kunis got the majority of the Supporting Actress nominations for that film (BFCA, SAG, Golden Globe), but I thought Barbara Hershey’s performance as the mother was far more interesting. She was memorable and scary and her final close-up in the audience watching Nina on stage was beautifully played.

The noise that Barbara Hershey makes when her character gets a door slammed on her hand is unintentionally funny. The entire theater was laughing out loud at her monkey screeching.

The mom was overprotective and subtly trying to prevent her daughter from exceeding her own ballet career. I think the cake thing was a way to get her to wind up eating a whole lot more than a dollop of cake and "get her fat" (at least the ballet world's version of fat).

I have a cat named Nina. She's a very petite girl. She's not a ballet dancer, but she does over to leap through the air.

When Mila finished "pleasuring" Natalie, she said "sweet girl." Exactly like the mother does. There is a definite incest vibe there.

Nina imagines the whole scene with Mila. It was her mind transforming into the Black Swan.
The Black wings on Mila’s back imply this.
There is an incest vibe between the mother and Nina. She imagines her mother in bed when she climaxes.

I adore this film. Saw it three times in theaters. Libatique's work is so visually addictive. I loved the way the camera moved.
People calling it pretentious are taking the film more seriously than Aronofsky did. You can tell from the moment it starts that he's having fun with the material. The campy overtones, the schlocky undertones... it's all intentional and used perfectly to execute the vision. From the outset he stated that he wanted to make a were-swan movie, which is an absurd idea in and of itself, but it fucking works. It's one of Natalie Portman's few exceptional performances. I'm glad Aronofsky got that out of her.

Um, no. The masturbation scene is not great. Much like the dumb and out of place lesbian scene, it is gratuitous and desperate. Absolutely no one masturbates like that. What was this idiot bitch mounting? The air? The director just wanted to make sure that we all see Natalie's ass pumping up and down because she has (rolls eyes) suuuch a sexy ass. It was laughable.
And the stupid lesbian sex scene. Yes, I'm sure women just jump into it like that. No chance for Natalie to go freshen her sweaty and discharge loaded vagina. Just pull the stained panties off and dive right in to a musky vulva littered with toilet paper pieces and feces. Why is this a thing in movies? Like because people are hot, they never worry about these things?

Just had a re-watch of this movie. It's pretty obvious that there is something unnatural about the mother-daughter relationship. You can see it when the mother hugs Nina, her eyes open wide as if something evil lurks. Then when she asks Nina if she's "ready for me", the woman is wearing a black lacy negligee. There's also the scene where she's helping Nina undress after the gala. She's caressing Nina all over with a look of lust in her eyes when she says, "He probably wanted you all to himself (Tomas). Arguably, Stranger Things is the trashy soap. She and Hopper's sexual frustration throughout season 3 was so goofy that it felt soapish.

I love Mila in Black Swan. It's like she's in a different movie. Ugh, such perfect casting.

They were both so fucking thin in this movie.
How much would they be paid? As dancers? Enough to afford a NYC apartment?
