I thought it was kinda funny, but I've never been there. I mentioned this to someone else and they said it was racist. Is it?

I once flew from the east coast to Silicon Valley for an interview with a high tech company. I interviewed with about 10 people, and all of them were Asian. I felt, as a Gay (white) man, that I was already a minority, and I didn’t want to double-down on that. I just thought it would be really isolating. I know others, such as African-Americans, in most places, have no choice about being a minority. But I did have a choice, and I just didn’t want to deal with it.
I once interviewed at a rocket fuel company south of Salt Lake City. I had lunch with some other young people there, who were also non-locals (non-Mormons), and they said, in summary, that the the Mormons were really friendly at first. But once they realized that they weren’t going to convert you, they shun you. I didn’t care to move ahead with that job, either. (A few years later, the plant exploded and I think a bunch of people died.)
I interviewed at another company with two or three men, and they were all over 400 pounds. I chose not to pursue that job because I thought they’d be a bad influence on me.

When Hong Kong was turned back over to China, the wealthy there looked for somewhere to put their money and/or move. Vancouver became the city of choice, which explains the reference to Hong Kong. The city just south of the city, Richmond, is like a giant Chinatown. It's not racist to point out the large percentage of Chinese that make up the city.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 26, 2019 3:10 PM |
Here in Seattle, the nouveau Chinese will only drive Mercedes or BMW, everything else is crap as far as they're concerned
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 26, 2019 3:15 PM |
R2 is the word "Chinatown" racist?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 26, 2019 3:23 PM |
No, R17, Chinatown is not racist. Many large cities have areas that are identified that way due to large concentrations of residents of Chinese descent, with numerous Chinese restaurants and signs written in Chinese.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 26, 2019 3:47 PM |
It's all in the context, OP. People call parts of Los Angeles "Tehrangeles" due to the large Iranian community. The term is used in the press and by Iranians themselves. It is only racist if you use it perjoratively.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 26, 2019 3:48 PM |
China has now imposed a law that citizens can't take their money out of China. At least largest enough sums to buy property in the west.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 26, 2019 3:50 PM |
It might not be racist now, but in 25 years or so we'll look back on "Chinatown" and cringe.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 26, 2019 3:57 PM |
Ugh I hope not r21. That means the SJWers have taken over.

by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 26, 2019 4:47 PM |
These terms have been around for decades. Not sure why this is news
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 26, 2019 4:59 PM |
If Chinatown is racist, then so is Little Italy. I'm so tired of this political correctness over nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 26, 2019 5:06 PM |
My Chinese coworker called it Hongcouver in 2003. Hardly new. Doubt she was being racist against her own people.

Lot of Taiwanese, Koreans and Philipinos here as well as Iranians and Syrians. Recent years we have had more Mexicans and people from Central and South America.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 26, 2019 5:13 PM |
Your friend is 22 years late to the joke, Hongcouver was coined during the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to the mainland. Hong Kong residents could buy real estate in Canada and get into a citizenship program.
