Why are Madonna's numbers so low on Spotfy?

Not one of her "classics" has 100 million streams. Michael Jackson, Queen, Elton John have an insanely high number of streams on their classic tunes.

by Anonymousreply 56May 27, 2019 5:42 PM

Because her name means nothing to today's youth. She's been forgotten by all except her 50+ year old gay fans.

by Anonymousreply 1May 25, 2019 10:57 PM

What about Fat Janet's numbers? I listen to the Velvet Rope when I need to take a shit.

by Anonymousreply 2May 25, 2019 10:57 PM

Her catalog is not classic. Forgettable shit. Not as bad Mariah, but her songs do not have Whitney longevity.

by Anonymousreply 3May 25, 2019 11:41 PM

R3 Whitney is already half forgotten

by Anonymousreply 4May 25, 2019 11:44 PM

Because she went all-in for Tidal.

by Anonymousreply 5May 25, 2019 11:44 PM

R3 = Fat LSA troll

by Anonymousreply 6May 25, 2019 11:44 PM

Whitney doesn't have longevity...

by Anonymousreply 7May 25, 2019 11:46 PM

OP, older pop artists don't do well on Spotify. Rap and older rock tend to do much better. Whitney does well on spotify but that is because she died tragically.

by Anonymousreply 8May 25, 2019 11:48 PM

Also, I wouldn't say any of Elton John's songs do amazingly well, but pretty well. If you want to see amazingly well, see Earth Wind and Fire, Queen, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Guns N Roses, etc.

by Anonymousreply 9May 25, 2019 11:50 PM

You never know who stands the test of time

by Anonymousreply 10May 25, 2019 11:51 PM

Whitney’s music is NOT forgotten... Never will be forgotten. Teenagers play “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” at gay bar jukeboxes.

What modern day diva has an “I Will Always Love You”?

by Anonymousreply 11May 25, 2019 11:52 PM

Madonna's songs sold based on her image, rather than the quality of the music.

by Anonymousreply 12May 25, 2019 11:53 PM

R11, her music isn't forgotten and neither is Madonna's. And really, you're using what's played at gay bar jukeboxes as a testament to longevity? The problem is pop ages far worse than rock does and that's why people seek rock and rap out more than older pop songs.

by Anonymousreply 13May 25, 2019 11:55 PM

r8, Michael Jackson dispels that, he's a classic pop artist.. And certain fans of hers say Madonna is just as big as him or even bigger.

by Anonymousreply 14May 25, 2019 11:55 PM

r9, His songs have double the streams hers have. I was mostly using him because Madonna fans always say he's jealous of her and she's a much bigger deal than him. In 2019 I don't think that's the case.

by Anonymousreply 15May 25, 2019 11:57 PM

R14, no he doesn't. Michael Jackson is a GIANT exception to the rule. His music appealed to EVERYONE back in the day, even the people who were generally only into rap. Mariah Carey is similar in that regard. Her decision to crossover into R&B in the mid 90s was savvier than she realized. That's why her numbers are better on spotify. Celine Dion, aside from one or two songs, also doesn't do great on spotify and Janet does so much worse than Mariah, Whitney, Madonna or Celine.

by Anonymousreply 16May 25, 2019 11:59 PM

Madonna doesn't have just one hit, she had like fifty. So one must add all of her numbers to equal the others. She's not known for just one song.

Also, typically big voiced singers stand the test of time better.

Her numbers are much higher than Janet's, her primary competitor

by Anonymousreply 17May 26, 2019 12:00 AM

R17, the bigger issue is that Madonna doesn't really have a song that towers over all her others the way the other divas do. Celine has My Heart Will Go on, Mariah has All I want for Christmas and Whitney has I Will Always Love you. They had other hits too but these ones dominate all the others, by far. On youtube, La Isla Bonita does amazingly well and it has more than 300 million views. But on Spotify, her most popular song is Like a Prayer. So her fans are unified in what her best song is.

by Anonymousreply 18May 26, 2019 12:04 AM

WTF is Spotify?

by Anonymousreply 19May 26, 2019 12:06 AM

La Isla Bonita is a classic. It's an escape fantasy of the perfect island.

So is Vogue, but that's too gay to appeal to the masses.

by Anonymousreply 20May 26, 2019 12:21 AM

Into the Groove was playing at a Starbucks I was in last week.

by Anonymousreply 21May 26, 2019 12:37 AM

Big woop R21!!!

R11 What gay bars are you going to that have jukeboxes, Fonzie?

by Anonymousreply 24May 26, 2019 1:53 AM

Madonna has multiple classic songs, her legacy is secured for all eternity.

by Anonymousreply 25May 26, 2019 2:14 AM

R24, in Manhattan, numerous gay bars have jukeboxes. Where do you live? Mobile, Alabama?

by Anonymousreply 26May 26, 2019 4:12 AM

What's Spotfy?

by Anonymousreply 27May 26, 2019 4:18 AM

R23, Mariah has a much wider appeal than Madonna. I’m 24 and pretty much everyone my age listens to mariah or has in the past. The Emancipation Of Mimi and its singles were huge.

I don’t remember a time in my life when Madonna wasn’t seen as an embarrassing old freak.

by Anonymousreply 28May 26, 2019 4:56 AM

R28=Lourdes

by Anonymousreply 29May 26, 2019 5:01 AM

Well dig around on the internet net a bit R28. She was beyond fabulous. It was an event, a spectical, every time she came out with a new single, album release, tour. I'm so happy to have been young in that era of music, with Madonna leading it. By the way, nearly all of her peers are dead. She was magnificent.

by Anonymousreply 30May 26, 2019 5:32 AM

And Mimi wasn't embarrassing R28? Her TRL breakdown? Glitter? Selling Loverboy for .40? Dressing like a 19 year old? Those bad breast implants? And that's only 2001.

by Anonymousreply 31May 26, 2019 11:48 AM

The problem Madonna has is she was a star of the moment, with not much of a legacy.

No one know she music or movies anymore

by Anonymousreply 32May 26, 2019 12:18 PM

"Madonna?"

by Anonymousreply 33May 26, 2019 12:21 PM

Madonna was MUCH bigger than Mariah

by Anonymousreply 34May 26, 2019 12:41 PM

WHO? Who is Madonna?

by Anonymousreply 35May 26, 2019 12:55 PM

Quote[Madonna's songs sold based on her image, rather than the quality of the music.]

This. And spending the last 15 years turning herself into a bad joke about aging hasn’t helped.

by Anonymousreply 36May 26, 2019 1:23 PM

Beside from making a career based on her image, her genre also seems all over the place. I’m a Madonna fan and lost interest after American Life. But don’t cry for Madge Argentina, her net worth is on the right side of over $500 million. She really needs to find a cause that she believes in with her heart and not for her need for attention, it’s too sad.

by Anonymousreply 37May 26, 2019 1:37 PM

R28, her appeal is much wider but the emancipation of mimi was only big in North America. It only sold like an extra 2 million copies outside of there. Compare that to Confessions on a Dance Floor which sold only like 1 million copies in America but sold like 7 million elsewhere. After Daydream, Mariah never had a huge global album.

by Anonymousreply 38May 26, 2019 3:06 PM

Because Spotify is only a very small piece of the pie.

That is like saying, why does Reba McEntire get a lot of airplay in Nashville, but none in Chicago.

The two things are not comparable.

by Anonymousreply 39May 26, 2019 3:10 PM

Madonna is from a time when people actually PAID for music. I'm sure she doesn't give a shit about making $.0001 every time someone streams one of her songs on Spotify when she has already made $5 or $6 per CD/album she has sold.

by Anonymousreply 40May 26, 2019 3:16 PM

True R40. I don't know a single person who uses Spotify.

by Anonymousreply 41May 26, 2019 3:37 PM

[quote]Whitney does well on spotify but that is because she died tragically.

Hmmmmmmmmmm....

by Anonymousreply 42May 26, 2019 3:46 PM

No one is here for Madonna. It's 2019 for Christ's sake.

by Anonymousreply 43May 26, 2019 4:07 PM

R39, it is growing at a fast rate. It has 100 million subscribers now.

by Anonymousreply 44May 26, 2019 4:19 PM

Does Spotify play only the music you ask it to, or does it use algorithms to choose songs based on its interpretation of your preferences?

If as I believe Spotify et al choose your music for you to a great extent, it would explain the popularity of older rock songs and MJ. If you listen to the radio, this is also all you hear - older R&B (not rap), old pop/rock, "classic" rock, and an insane, eye-rolling amount of MJ. Mostly boomer-era shit that was sold on LPs.

Why? I guess that the royalty rates for these songs are lower. Some artists got smart in the 90s and 00s about taking control of their portfolio in the modern music era, and older artists did what they always did, which was to sell albums and let radio stations play their music relatively inexpensively.

My guess the increased play of MJ is about cheaper royalty rates.

by Anonymousreply 45May 26, 2019 8:40 PM

No, you choose the music it plays, it's not like Pandora. But they do have a lot of playlists that you can choose to listen to.

by Anonymousreply 46May 26, 2019 9:10 PM

[quote]The problem is pop ages far worse than rock does and that's why people seek rock and rap out more than older pop songs.

All of them age badly compared to jazz and pre-rock pop music.

by Anonymousreply 47May 26, 2019 9:11 PM

It is more likely a lot of her older fans have moved on. I doubt they are still putting 30 yr old CDs in a CD player.

I am a fan, but I stream all my music now.

by Anonymousreply 48May 26, 2019 9:12 PM

"Pre-rock pop," R47? You mean Eydie Gorme and Connie Francis and Bobby Darin? Talk about aged out of existence.

by Anonymousreply 49May 26, 2019 9:14 PM

I cannot believe anyone listens to MJ. I loathe his 1980's albums. Tacky 80's synths that haven't aged well.

by Anonymousreply 50May 26, 2019 9:16 PM

Compared to the 1990s ones and beyond that are barely an improvement and take away any remaining semblance of songwriting skill?

by Anonymousreply 51May 26, 2019 9:17 PM

Apple Music recently surpassed Spotify in subscribers. Streaming is just massive right now and getting bigger by the day.

There are multiple rumors that Apple has plans to discontinue iTunes within the next 3 years since pure sales are so low right now. They want to focus all of their resources on Apple Music instead, which is far more profitable. Physical copies of CDs won't even be a thing in a few years.

by Anonymousreply 52May 26, 2019 9:56 PM

Sales would be better if new music were better.

by Anonymousreply 53May 26, 2019 10:01 PM

R53 - agree, I know I’m getting older, but I detest Adam Levine and auto tune, and I’m so over the female over singing. All music these days sounds the same. Does anyone even listen to FM radio anymore? I have Sirius XM in the car and they frequently play Madge oldies.

by Anonymousreply 54May 27, 2019 12:38 PM

R54 If the only option in the car is FM radio, I shut it off. It's the same four songs and an unlimited supply of commercials screeching in my ear. I also have Sirius, the best money spent. Now with the Sirius app (included, no extra charge) you can listen to Sirius anyplace, and listen to it in other cars if the car has Bluetooth. Thank God for Sirius. And yes they often play Madonna, and plenty of her remixes as well.

by Anonymousreply 55May 27, 2019 2:39 PM

R50, I don't understand why either. To me, his music has aged worse than Madonna's classic 80s songs but he always had HUGE crossover appeal that she never did. But I don't understand why people today find Thriller so great.
