What kind of toothpaste do you use?

I'm partial to Tom's varieties and have been for a long time (remember the metal tubes?), but I sometimes alternate to Rembrandt's peroxide paste, which I've found does a nice job of whitening. I also will occasionally use Pepsodent, simply because I love the sassafras flavor; it's like brushing your teeth with root beer.

Fluoride free toothpaste is fairly useless.

by Anonymousreply 11May 26, 2019 12:12 AM

I purchase my toothpaste from my dental office at every cleaning. That shit (3-D Whitening, etc.) on the market is irreparably damaging to the tooth (teefhs) enamel.

by Anonymousreply 12May 26, 2019 12:13 AM

No fluoride - hello cavities.

by Anonymousreply 13May 26, 2019 12:27 AM

I use a combination of Crest & baking soda. I keep a water proof container of baking soda in the shower (I brush my teeth and shave in the shower). I wet the toothbrush, dip it in the baking soda, then squeeze out a line of Crest on top and brush away.

Yes, I go overboard with my teeth. I'm 66 years old and most men I know my age have old man teeth. Stained from coffee and smoking (or God only knows what else I don't even want to think about). I have a beautiful set of perfect straight teeth and I want to keep them looking great as long as I can. People have actually asked me if my teeth are natural or caps.

by Anonymousreply 14May 26, 2019 12:29 AM

I've used both fluoridated and non-fluoridated toothpaste, but I always rinse with some sort of fluoridated mouthwash. Lately I've been using Listerine's fluoride "nighttime" mouthwash which doesn't have alcohol but still has a mild Listerine taste. I think the paranoid conspiracy shite about fluoride "calcifying your pineal gland" and closing your "third eye" is hogwash.

Rembrandt is good toothpaste, but it's expensive. I grew up on well water and have always wondered if it contributed to my cavity-prone teeth. I'm in my late-twenties and have quite a few fillings and one crown in my mouth. It's annoying because I have always been religious about dental hygiene. On the bright side, my teeth look pretty good, fillings aside. My mother is the same way, so I've always assumed it was an inherited trait.

by Anonymousreply 20May 26, 2019 12:40 AM

Basic Crest or Colgate cavity protection. Feel like all the more expensive stuff is a ripoff - like high end shampoo and soap. Minor difference for twice the price.

Would like to hear from a dentist to see what they think. I don’t care about the rank and file white-obsessed DLers.

by Anonymousreply 21May 26, 2019 1:08 AM

Arm and Hammer Peroxicare or Advance White which are about the only two types you can find on store shelves anywhere, if they stock Arm and Hammer at all. I guess it’s not a popular brand.

by Anonymousreply 22May 26, 2019 1:19 AM

Kolynos Tooth Powder, or course.

by Anonymousreply 23May 26, 2019 4:25 AM

I prefer Tom's of Maine but get it only on sale.

I tried baking soda with peppermint oil but my gums started bleeding three weeks later. I resumed using commercial toothpaste and the bleeding stopped. Aim, Colgate, whatever's on special.

by Anonymousreply 24May 26, 2019 4:30 AM

Crest Sparkle toothpaste. I know it's juvenile, but I love the taste.

by Anonymousreply 25May 26, 2019 4:46 AM

[quote] Please tell DL you always change out the toothbrush or the container of baking soda, which sit in your warm, moist shower . .

Certainly not. The baking soda is in a watertight container. Why would I change the toothbrush or the baking soda out? Baking soda doesn't go rancid. And obviously the toothbrush is thoroughly washed out after I use it. The whole bathroom is bone dry within a few minutes after I shower. I run the ceiling exhaust fan the whole time I'm showering and let it run for 10 minutes after I'm finished.

by Anonymousreply 26May 26, 2019 7:29 PM

Tom's, the Fennel flavored one.

by Anonymousreply 27May 26, 2019 7:35 PM

"Stained from coffee and smoking..."

R14, you imbecile, stains are easily removed by a dental hygienist. They scrape the stain off - it sits on you teeth, tooth whiteners/brighteners are not cleaners. That is if you're not cheap enough to go to the dentist twice a year for cleaning.

I use Tom's Whole Care because I've developed an allergy to the chemicals in regular toothpastes. Plus I use a waterpik a few times a week. My 59 years old teeth look like 25!

by Anonymousreply 28May 26, 2019 7:40 PM

I should add that I rinse with mouth wash after brushing - very important. The kind WITHOUT alcohol:

So no dentists here? Just a bunch of random preferences. Until someone can prove that expensive toothpaste is more effective at maintaining healthy teeth - as opposed to whitening by eroding enamel - I’ll stick with my $2 Colgate.

by Anonymousreply 32May 26, 2019 7:53 PM

Earth paste. It's made from clay and leaves my teeth feeling clean and looking shiny and white. Other than that, anything without fluoride. I'll use baking soda rather than a fluoride toothpaste.

by Anonymousreply 33May 26, 2019 8:17 PM

I like Colgate Total Advanced Whitening in the blue and white stripe. Mild flavor, smooth texture, and foamy. I like foam. The color of the paste is important, because I learned the hard way that there are about 10 different versions of CTAW for sale. Each store gets its own version(s). A CSR from Colgate explained this to me in an email when I asked where I could find the blue and white stripe. The packages all look so similar it's easy to end up with something you don't want.

Very recent reviews on the Colgate website, within the past week, show that Colgate did some major reformulation of its pastes, and people hate it - they say it makes their mouths burn, tastes nasty/bitter, etc. Something to keep in mind.

Since Tussy doesn't make a toothpaste, I use New Ipana.

Has anyone used "Hello" toothpaste? I occasionally used the black/tar-like flavor. It does make a mess of the sink (as the label said it would), but I felt that it did indeed temporarily give a little bit of a lift/shine to my teeth. I'd only use it sporadically, and now I have another flavor to try.

Also, what exactly is the benefit of baking soda and Crest (or Colgate or whatever brand)?

Regarding mouth rinses, my dentist specified ACT without alcohol or even a generic ACT. She prefers the ingredients in ACT as opposed to Crest or any other brands. She maintains my checkups are better since.

by Anonymousreply 36May 26, 2019 9:40 PM

R34 here again. More reading and I learned that Colgate has replaced the sodium fluoride with stannous fluoride in at least some of its Total toothpastes. I wonder if they are trying to phase out triclosan? I hope not. But yes, stannous fluoride tastes nasty.

R36 I HATE that shit. My sister-in-law is a bonafide hippie who will only use non-fluoridated, all-natural toothpastes, and she had this in her bathroom when I stayed with her and my brother. The texture was off-putting to me and it was too messy to even be worth any potential benefits in cleaning. I use the fluoridated Tom's toothpastes. I alternate the varieties they have, though I avoid their cinnamon ones as I despise that flavor in a toothpaste. The anise one is okay sometimes, as it tastes licorice-y, though I tend to prefer mint.

by Anonymousreply 39May 27, 2019 3:04 AM

I had an allergic reaction to the new Colgate formulation. Swollen lips, tongue, and sores all over my mouth; it’s been a month since I stopped using it and my tongue is finally back to normal.

CVS was out of Tom's. So I decided to try Burt's Bees and the taste is so horrific I literally gagged.

by Anonymousreply 46July 1, 2019 4:18 PM

There's another good toothpaste that I order from Europe called sensodyne repair. Don't bother with the American version,it doesn't contain the special ingredients that actually repair the enamel. The FDA won't approve the ingredient just like they won't approve new sunscreens. Basically anything that actually works the FDA rejects.

by Anonymousreply 47July 1, 2019 4:19 PM

I'm a sucker for unusual toothpastes. My latest jam is a Japanese toothpaste with nanohydroxyapatite, which is supposed to remineralize/rebuild your teeth. It's not officially sold in the US because fluoride is the only ingredient approved for protecting teeth here. I get mine imported from Japan. So far so good, but I guess my next checkup will tell the story...

Fluoride is in just about everything you drink so you really don't need toothpaste with fluoride. As stated above some toothpaste is too harsh on your teeth. I use Auromere because it doesn't have dyes, bleaches or fluoride. It has neem and peelu, which supposedly is good for your teeth and gums.

by Anonymousreply 49July 1, 2019 4:49 PM

r49 not true - Flouride is in water - tap - but not bottled. Same or Pepsi, Coke etc, iced teas fruit juices none of it has fluoride.

I use Perodontax and once a week Charcol Powder to whiten.

by Anonymousreply 50July 1, 2019 5:11 PM

I just polished my teeth with Pearl Drops tooth polish. Pearl Drops keeps my teeth their whitest and brightest and it's so gentle I use it every day to face the world with a dazzling smile. Llllmmmmmmm. It's a Great! feeling.

Sensodyne Pronamal, I had a sensitivity problem until I started using this years ago, no problems since. I detest their commercials, but the product works.

by Anonymousreply 52July 1, 2019 6:44 PM

Think again R50. Where do you think they are getting their water? Except for water that has been filtered you are getting fluoride in your beverages and most processed food. Those purification pitchers and those for the faucet will not get rid of fluoride.

We love the dentist in the Pronamel commercials who cannot pronounce "enamel". We love Dr. 'Namel and her speech impediment.

I developed a sensitivity to sodium laurel/eth sulfate, so now I use Closys at my dentist's recommendation. First I got tissue sloughing and then developed full-on sores and abrasions. Closys is very gentle, but it doesn't really whiten my teeth.

by Anonymousreply 61July 5, 2019 10:55 PM

I ordered some items from C.O. Bigelow and along with the order I selected 4 Marvis (made in Italy) toothpaste samples as part of the order. I choose Licorice, Fluoride, Classic Strong Mint & Whitening Mint. I really enjoyed the licorice flavored one and ordered a full size tube (3.8oz). It's pricey but the super creamy texture makes it a pleasure to brush. I regularly use Colgate Whitening paste and treating myself to a luxury toothpaste is one small way of saying 'I'm Worth It'!

by Anonymousreply 62July 5, 2019 11:45 PM

More important than tooth paste is flossing. You can't image the junk that accumulates. Best flossers are plastic picks. Get right to the source better than the stringy stuff that can cause your gums to bleed while you pull the string back and forth,

by Anonymousreply 63July 6, 2019 12:15 AM

R30 I'm a dentist, $2 Colgate is fine. I don't even know what brand I'm using at the moment, it doesn't matter as long as its fluoridated. I recommend electric toothbrushes - they clean better and remind you to not brush too hard, I use Oral-B. Aim bristles towards gum line where plaque accumulates and don't skip any surface/tooth. Floss once/day each side of every tooth and going deep into the gums, if your gums are bleeding it means you have inflammed gums, keep on flossing daily and it will stop. Don't rinse out with water after, just spit or rinse with mouthwash. Use a tongue scraper.

Sensodyne

by Anonymousreply 69July 7, 2019 2:07 AM

Usually, Colgate or Crest and sometimes Arm and Hammer. I floss everyday but I brush too hard. There is one tooth where the gum has receded and I can feel an indent where the gum should be.

by Anonymousreply 70July 7, 2019 2:46 AM

Both my dentist and hygienist are strong believers in Closys toothpaste and mouthwash. I believe the type of dental floss you use is more important though. Do NOT use the Glide Comfort Plus floss that comes in the green container. I was using that because my bottom teeth are so close together but I eventually learned that it doesn't do a hell of a lot for removing the sticky plaque from teeth. So I changed to Original Glide floss and my checkups are fine now.

by Anonymousreply 71July 7, 2019 3:03 AM

r71, you wouldn't happen to know if the Glide comfort plus is waxed floss whereas Glide original isn't?

by Anonymousreply 72July 7, 2019 4:10 AM

[quote]Fluoride free toothpaste is fairly useless.

Why? As long as it contains calcium it should still neutralize acids that would otherwise be eating away at your enamel.

by Anonymousreply 73July 7, 2019 4:57 AM

R72 Gllide Original feels waxed but Glide Comfort Plus is super duper waxed! I do have to use floss that has some wax because otherwise it will likely get stuck between a couple of my bottom teeth. But the Original works fine for getting the plaque off--a dental student told me that the trick is to slide the floss several times up and down each tooth instead of just quickly flossing between them. Takes a bit longer but the difference is worth it.

by Anonymousreply 74July 7, 2019 10:01 PM

If you have dental implants you probably shouldn't be flossing.

by Anonymousreply 75July 7, 2019 10:09 PM

My dentist told me that Glide floss is basically useless. It needs to be rough enough to dislodge gunk from the tooth surface, not just glide over it.

by Anonymousreply 76July 7, 2019 10:56 PM

Thank you R71 /74 (from me who asked). Good info in regards to waxed floss and flossing correctly.

People compliment my teeth all the time. What they don't know is that I haven't been to the dentist since I was 13 years old. I am now 28 and I've never had cavities or needed braces.

by Anonymousreply 79July 8, 2019 7:45 AM

I use The Natural Dentist All-in-One toothpaste from the health food store. It has flouride, but is is sodium laurel sulfate free. SLS is a foaming agent and detergent found in most toothpastes, and it is very drying to the mouth. If you have dry mouth already, it can create additional problems. In my case, I've suffered from canker sores my entire life and they can be very long-lived. Using SLS toothpastes, I could conceivably have a canker sore last for 3 weeks or more. With SLS free toothpaste a canker sore will resolve in one week or less. It's been a life-changer for me.

by Anonymousreply 91July 10, 2019 12:54 AM

R90 I don't have cavities. I would have had symptoms after 15 years. It's not rocket science. Avoid excess sugar, floss, and brush your teeth.

by Anonymousreply 92July 10, 2019 1:05 AM

I didn't have a single cavity for the first 37 years of my life. I too was (and am) anal about my oral hygiene. I too avoid excess sugar. I too had no symptoms of a cavity...but then my dentist found one during a routine cleaning. I was beyond shocked--I even went to get a second opinion from another dentist--but it was true. Sometimes brushing, flossing and avoiding sugar isn't enough for whatever reason. A new medication could dry out your mouth or change the enzymes in your saliva just enough to allow a cavity to form. You never know.
