I ate a piece of Toblerone and it tasted like nothing

Well, like nothing except "sweet".

My taste buds are okay, I think. Do I need to get then checked out or is mass market chocolate more crap than it used to be? Can you recommend reasonably priced good chocolate, Datalounge?

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2019 2:59 AM

Don't know about the shelves of Aldo USA, but I source my budget bars and blocks of great variety and quality Belgian or Euro chocolate there.

by Anonymousreply 1May 18, 2019 3:23 AM

Do you have a tongue scraper, OP? I think there might be something neurologically wrong with you.

by Anonymousreply 2May 18, 2019 3:32 AM

Trader Joe's 100 calorie chocolate bars are excellent and Belgian.

by Anonymousreply 3May 18, 2019 3:35 AM

Belgians are kinky motherfuckers.

by Anonymousreply 4May 18, 2019 3:37 AM

Belgian cookies are great, they used to carry them at Whole Foods but realized they were too good and too cheap.

I like Dove dark, Newman’s Own, and Choceur.

by Anonymousreply 6May 18, 2019 3:45 AM

I also like See’s Candies chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 7May 18, 2019 3:45 AM

American (and Canadian) mass market 'chocolate' is dog shit.

by Anonymousreply 8May 18, 2019 4:15 AM

You didn’t taste all that chewy nougat, OP?

I'm pretty sure Toblerone's flavour has been changed over the last few decades, after Jacobs Suchard was sold to Kraft, then again to Mondelēz. All of a sudden they just tasted too sweet, and the quality was altered. Much like when Nestle bought over Rowntree Hoadley (Violet Crumble for example, which have deteriorated in flavour and quality and I rarely eat these days) I am a chocoholic (not fat, even though I'm typing fat) and have been collecting chocolate wrappers since 1987. There is not much that these chocolate companies can get past me. Cadbury even tastes different since Mondelēz bought them, sweeter and not as 'crisp'. Meaning when you have just the normal Dairy Milk block, it used to have this freshness to it. I've noticed it's not as enjoyable. Same with Cadbury owned Red Tulip. Those 'Elegant Rabbits' at Easter time would be delicious The last few years, terrible! Overly sweet. I have only been purchasing Ferrero for my Easter chocolate the last few years. Tasty and no headaches, 10-20g less sugar as they are full of hazelnuts. To die for...

I like Tony’s chocolate. It tastes like Toblerone but a lot less sweet.

The last time I had a Toblerone it didn't taste as substantial as it used to, but I wouldn't say it tasted only sweet. There was definitely chocolate flavor there, but not worth buying a second time.

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2019 2:54 PM

Belgian cookies are not made in Belgium. FYI.

by Anonymousreply 13May 18, 2019 2:55 PM

Their dark ones are still good, though since my supermarket was bought out by Stop-n-Shop they don't carry them anymore, as they don't carry lots of stuff I like anymore....

by Anonymousreply 14May 18, 2019 2:58 PM

I love Toblerone.

I used to live in Switzerland and I had two chocolate factories near where I lived. Cailler near Gruyère, where the cheese comes from, has a fabulous visitor centre. Pic below and Villers in Fribourg, which served fabulous hot chocolate in the cafe.

As soon as those big multinationals buy food companies they assign their food chemists to save costs, and the quality goes to shit.

Cadburys is the shining example. Once a quaker family owned company, whose name stood for quality and integrity, and whose profits assisted their workers lead quality lives -- Port Sunlight was built to provide quality worker housing. Now they stand for nothing but profit.

Look for a chocolate firm that's still family owned, like the New Zealand Whitakers. Great chocolate.

R16, Hershey's was also a Quaker company that existed to support a home for boys.

by Anonymousreply 17May 18, 2019 3:18 PM

R16 Totally agree. It's like more sugar is all of a sudden in the recipe, and cocao mass etc levels are lowered. You just know when you eat it next that it's not the same and that costs have been reduced. I used to be a Cadbury devotee, but not anymore. I love the Australian family owned 'Haigh's'. Their cherry and plum liqueurs, turkish delights and fruit creams are amazing. I have found Hershey's and most American brands don't know how to make chocolate. It tastes like pretend chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 18May 18, 2019 3:35 PM

Try Theo chocolate.

The sad thing is that local chocolate is no better. We have a family chocolate shop in town. It has been around forever. You might as well chew on a candle there is so much paraffin in the chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 21May 18, 2019 3:51 PM

Yes, Toblerone has deteriorated markedly in the last 5 years or so. Very little chocolate taste any more - it's more like the cheap "chocolate flavoured candy" now.

I find that Lindt is the best of the mass market brands now. It doesn't seem to have adjusted its quality downwards like the others. Sad about Cadburys.

by Anonymousreply 22May 18, 2019 3:53 PM

Always thought toblerone was overrated - for a euro chocolate - it tastes kinda sweet and waxy and think that's become even more pronounced over the years...

In the past tho, it was great as a dinner party dessert. Used to just melt it as was, and when warm and liquid - it made the best chocolate fondue evah! No need to add anything else at all - and just have chopped pieces of pineapple, banana and some strawberries to dip innit. I know it sounds kinda white-trashy - but it was really, really good - and people loved it!

Haven't tried it in a few years - so not sure if their newer formulation still tastes good this way...

by Anonymousreply 23May 18, 2019 3:57 PM

Toblerone bars were a magical thing that we would only get on airlines.

They were amazing.

Now, not so much.

by Anonymousreply 24May 18, 2019 3:58 PM

Some bad news from Muncie last night, but Lowery's is still good news.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING has changed. They're closing down now because it's too hot to make candy in the summertime. They urge customers to stock up in the spring and freeze their chocolates to be eaten in the summer.

R17? Milton Hershey was not a Quaker. He was raised a Mennonite and spoke PA Dutch.

by Anonymousreply 26May 18, 2019 3:59 PM

Toblerone is halal now. Don't buy that.

by Anonymousreply 27May 18, 2019 4:08 PM

See's Candy is the best!

by Anonymousreply 28May 18, 2019 4:30 PM

Toblerone was never that great, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 29May 19, 2019 12:17 AM

Best chocolate in the world is (or was) Venezuelan brand "El Rey", but don't know if it's still being produced since the country colapsed.

by Anonymousreply 30May 19, 2019 1:57 AM

Toblerone use to be made in Bedford.
