TCM has been showing this movie a lot, lately.

I could have sworn there was a more recent thread than this one I found, but here's one from 2016

Great story in the Village Voice about Stonewall: "Instead of trying to find a revival of All About Eve, they decided to stand up and fight!" Is TCM running this to coincide with Pride Day?

Who hasn’t had a real life Eve Harrington interloper? I’ve had a few. Would make a great thread.

I love Marilyn Monroe in this movie.
Understated yet wonderful performance.

TCM is showing it again tonight at 11:45 p.m. Eastern time, 8:45 p.m. Pacific.
Less than 45 minutes from now, if anyone's still up!

It's a good movie, a positive movie.

I absolutely adore Birdie.
I also love how Margo switches from her lowbrow NY accent, to her high fallutin' thespian accent, when she first meets Eve.

My favorite thing about AAE is the bitchy banter between Margo and Birdie. It's witty, fast, and funny.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 2, 2019 4:27 AM |
My favorite icy exchange is:
[italic]"I was dreadful, Miss Channing, believe me - I have no right to be anyone's understudy, much less yours..."
"I'm sure you underestimate yourself, Eve. You always do."
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 2, 2019 4:55 AM |
Probably my favorite line: “Now that’s something a girl could make sacrifices for.”
Said by Marilyn as she regards a sable coat at the party.
But it can apply to so many other things, or people.

"You are Too Short for that gesture" , said by Addison DeWitt to Eve Harrington, is one of the best put downs of all time, and was tailor made to be said to Andy Cohen on a regular basis.

I have a question about Phoebe, at the end of the movie.
She was giving off a STRONG lesbian vibe. I'm not sure if Eve picked up on it or not, but Addison certainly did. And he just accepted it.
Is it even possible that Eve would not be able to see herself in Phoebe? Or did she just stop caring?
In any case, if Eve was truly as cunning as she was supposed to be, she would have booted Phoebe out on her ass.

This movie could be summed up in the dialogue between Addison and Eve, in her suite in New Haven.
"Killer to killer." "Champion to champion!"
All of the plotting and also the back and forth lines, were like a duel.
Margo vs. Birdie. Margo vs. Eve. Margo vs. Bill.
Addison vs. Eve.
It was all back and forth verbal sparring. That's what makes this movie so good. Not only was it well written, but the lines were well delivered.

Was Addisson supposed to be boning the MM character? The Eve character?
(Seems so strnage for a nelly old queen although Zsa Zsa said he had sizemeat)

R22, that scene definitely had a lesbian feel to me, especially when Eve told Phoebe to stay the night, since she wouldn't get back home "until all hours." To me, it was Eve attempting to be the alpha lesbian, seeing Phoebe as a young girl she could easily manipulate, and not be manipulated by. But Eve was going to get a taste of her own medicine, and Addison knew it.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 2, 2019 8:55 AM |
There were no lesbians in the 1950s.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 2, 2019 5:09 PM |
Yes. There was an earlier scene where Eve gets her “roommate” to make some call saying Eve was indisposed, or something. And Eve puts her arm around her friend in a queer way. So Eve will do anything to advance her ambition. That is known.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 2, 2019 5:36 PM |
It’s also been pointed out that that scene with the girl from the rooming house is the only time we see Eve really smile.

TCM must really love Bette Davis, because All About Eve is on once again!
This time, it's on Tuesday November 26, at 8:00 a.m.
Later, at 8:00 p.m., "What ever happened to Baby Jane" will be on.
It's a double whammy!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 26, 2019 5:43 AM |
There's a certain softness when Eve speaks to Phoebe and says "you'll be out all hours" that seems like a moment of vulnerability - as if she's remembering her own ambition. I think she thinks Phoebe is cute but doesn't have outright designs upon her. She's just been through the wringer and she's falling asleep.

So basically, everything bad that happened in the movie, was Karen's fault.
Right?
What a dumb bitch!
