This morning he is tweeting about the people who spied on him committing treason and deserving long prison sentence and asking why Hilary is not being investigated. He openly talks like an authoritative ruler now and no one calls him on it. The GOP remains silent and/or complicit (Roma fawns over everything he says) and the media still presents him largely as some eccentric who is just Trump being Trump.

Democrats need to really hear what these working class voters are saying: they want a candidate that cares about labor issues, workers' rights and benefits and trade policy. They are less concerned about social issues and social change.
For Democrats to win in 2020, they must win Pennsylvania.

The new info about Flynn is very interesting. Especially the part that there is voicemail and that it may include a member of congress. It's taking forever , but, little by little, drip by drip, it will all come out.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 17, 2019 1:55 PM |
Labor issues should be the public platform, but social issues shouldn't be forgotten, either.

FYI for any posters or trolls who post articles from The Hill-The Hill is extremely right wing. The VP is the notorious John Soloman who is "primarily known for having been accused of biased reporting in favor of conservatives and repeatedly manufacturing faux scandals". That article that was posted by R573 previous thread is garbage.
I have gotten the impression that some posters here are of the notion that The Hill is a non biased reliable site. It is NOT. It is a cut below Real Clear Politics and similar to The Daily Caller. The background of the articles and sites posters bring here need to be known. Sick of the trolls and morons.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 17, 2019 3:05 PM |
After singing Flynn's praises for two years, Trump throws him under the bus this morning:
It now seems the General Flynn was under investigation long before was common knowledge. It would have been impossible for me to know this but, if that was the case, and with me being one of two people who would become president, why was I not told so that I could make a change?

Obama told Trump Flynn was fired for cause. Trump hired him anyway, thinking it would never blow back on him, since he was going to be King and it would never matter. Hahahaha.

[quote]But again, when Pence warned the graduates about being derided for their beliefs he obviously had neither the poor nor the outcast in mind. No, as everyone who heard him surely understood, what he was tacitly telling them is that they should expect to be condemned for being hostile toward the LGBTQ community and blaming it on God. That’s what faith devolves to for so many these days: a requirement to oppose gay rights.

And this week McConnell's "wife" screws CA by cancelling funds for a SF to LA rail and now threatens to take back funds already sent. Way to ruin a country, trump, fuck with the most successful state in the union while trying to drag back the rest into the 19th century.

R51, some of Flynn's testimony has been uncovered in court filings yesterday. He told the Special Counsel that he and his lawyers were contacted by members of Trump's administration and congress in an effort to interfere with the Russia investigation and his cooperation. Flynn even gave the Special Counsel a voicemail of one of those contacts. So far, the identities of the people who contacted Flynn and his lawyers have not been made public, but it is one of Trump's lawyers at the time and someone from congress.

re Flynn :
The Government today told the judge they could not file the requested documents because the report is too long and the court system will only handle small entries....the judge shot back : then break it up and make multiple entries...deadline stands.
Their bullshit delay tactics will only last so long before a judge starts locking people up. Barr has no control over the judiciary...and most judges arent pushovers like congress.

R59 - I can't believe they tried something that lame as an excuse. Breaking up long docs and/or voluminous exhibits into multiple parts for filing and submission to courts has been the norm for a long time. Wait, on second thought, of course I can believe they used that excuse.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 17, 2019 8:32 PM |
r61...really ?.....Do you believe for even one second that if you, I or anyone else deliberately defied a subpoena that we would not be arrested immediately ? How many people do you know that are given chance after chance to comply with something....and the only response given is basically "fuck you", and are still given chance after chance to comply. Congress IS a pushover and are looking pretty weak right now. It has nothing to do with impeachment. Its about adhering to the rule of law. Barr, Mnuchin, Ross, etc...should have been locked up at the very first refusal.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 17, 2019 8:45 PM |
Since no one I know is a giddamn criminal...no one is getting a subpoena. And when our congress are such lowlife idiots that they will not have these people arrested?! I am lost. All they worry about is the elections! This weakness is what Deplorables hate about us and I do not blame them. Democrats stand for nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 17, 2019 8:46 PM |
Seriously R67? These people are not 'you or I' and you sound deranged by not acknowledging that. I think Congress is continuing to honor the decorum and respect that has existed between the branches for our entire history. This isn't the first time the Executive branch has been defiant to the people's representatives and it makes them look elitist and lawless. It will be their downfall.
Thanks, R70, for providing the example.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 17, 2019 8:48 PM |
[quote]Given the Treasury Secretary's failure to comply today, I am consulting with counsel on how best to enforce the subpoenas."

Hint: it involves handcuffs.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 17, 2019 8:48 PM |
From Flynn’s info he gave special counsel isn’t that enough for arrests to be made? Unbelievable!
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 17, 2019 8:55 PM |
R73, and the Department of Justice is run by?
The willingness to comply with Congressional requests and subpeonas has always rested upon the respect for the equal powers of all the branches and the unwillingness to play politics with that arrangement. They are resisting because they know there is no enforcement capability when the AG of the US is in the pocket of the Chief Executive. This is why Barr should not have been allowed. Yes, they have no respect for the law. Congress is clearly showing this.
Jeff Sessions understood this and that's why he was canned. Anyone choosing the Constitution over Trump is canned.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 17, 2019 8:55 PM |
I was about to post when R76 posted. He/she is correct. Trump has exposed many structural flaws in our system of government. Take, for example, the issue of Congressional subpoenas: who, exactly, is supposed to enforce them? Federal law enforcement (DOJ, FBI) is controlled by the Executive (the lawless Trump). Congress has no enforcement arm -- Adam Schiff can't do everything himself. The only solution is to go to court.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 17, 2019 8:56 PM |
r72...FFS....NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW. You give them a chance...maybe two or three....but if they continue to say FUCK YOU, then you arrest them...regardless of who they are or the position they hold. THAT IS THE LAW. We are not discussing political policy differences here...we are talking national security. THERE IS A CLEAR AND DISTINCT DIFFERENCE. If Congress cannot get the Executive branch to comply, then immediately file with the courts...thats why there are three separate branches of government.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 17, 2019 9:01 PM |
They've been doing that, R78. No need to shout.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 17, 2019 9:02 PM |
r79...please point me to the court filings. There are not any. We still do not have an unredacted Mueller report, any of the evidence, and the administration and the DOJ are openly mocking congress publicly and defying subpoenas. How long do you suggest we allow them to play games and to dictate what we can and can not have access to ? After its too late to do anything ? After they have completely overthrown the government ?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | May 17, 2019 9:08 PM |
R80, how about over 30 years? This process has been happening since Reagan. No one was held accountable for Iran/Contra. How about the WMD affair and the outright lies of both Bush administrations to gain control of the Iraqui oil fields and cover up our own crimes by giving them chemical weapons to use on the Kurds.
Just because you just woke up doesn't give you the right to condemn those who have been 'seeing' this shit for what it is for some time now.
Essentially, and most fundamentally, our DOJ believes that the voting booth is the real solution here. We gave Mnuchin his chance...now the court filings begin.
It will take some time to change the obvious flaws in this set up because it took us quite some time to get here. Welcome to the party!

In a way, I'm glad that the Democrats are following the rule of law instead of going low. Our rule of law needs to be preserved and respected. But, otoh, I am impatient and I'm frustrated and angry by the way the Republicans are just ignoring our laws. I have to believe that slow and steady wins the race and that good will prevail.

This is revenge of the young Republicans of 1974. Ever since Nixon's resignation they've been building their case for an executive superior in power to Congress and the courts—a Republican executive, anyway. They're finally confident enough, and have a president shameless enough, to make their grab. And it coincides with a rise in autocracy elsewhere in the world to put more wind in their sails and rubles in their coffers.

The anti-Dems are here. Or should I say trolls because frustration with the Dems is 100% a Russian division tactic. If you are familiar with how our govt works, how our rule of law works, you know the Dems are not being spineless or weak in any way. They are exhausting their options to, as has been pointed out, preserve the rule of law and procedures. Is it frustrating? Yes. It is time consuming? Yes. Is it necessary? Yes, if you don't want us to completely descend into complete lawlessness which we are very, dangerously, close to. We have an entire branch of govt and political party that has forsaken any semblance of law, democracy, decency. Dems have to play this just right or it is over. The judicial branch is probably very close to being stooges for conservatives without regard for our Constitution.

A little off topic, (and this was discussed years ago on previous threads), but I still truly believe that a plan was conceived to elect Trump President - Trump SPECIFICALLY - long before 2016, and not only was the general National Election hacked, but the GOP as well.
Doesn't anybody recall the story reported on Rachel Maddow, (as well as a few other outlets), about how back in 2015, then front-runner Jeb Bush's campaign was derailed by outside forces the day it began? and how "outside forces" kept affecting other GOP candidates within days once they emerged as a front-runner? It all kept happening until Trump was last man standing. It was just the first big enterprise leading up to the GOP Convention. Then all the stuff with Hillary started to emerge.

Republicans have been working to subvert our democracy for decades. Impeaching Clinton over a blowjob, White Water, Benghazi, hanging chads, needless invasion of Iraq, implosion of economy under Bush, emergence of Tea Party and blatant racism when Obama was elected, obstructing Obama at every turn, gerrymandering, cheating, lying, blocking Merrick Garland, not filling judge-ships until Repukes were back in power, cheating to win, and on and on.
And for what? To further enrich billionaires and oppress everyone else. This is not a democracy any more, this is not majority rule. This is cheaters pulling the rug out from hardworking honest people to drag the country back into the dark ages. And now, blatant lying, mocking, and corruption by top government officials. It's too much. We've got to stop it.
We've become so weak and lazy. Our ancestors crossed oceans in little boats and hacked their way though forests, hunting for food and building their own shelter, crossing the country in covered wagons and dying for freedom. How have we come to this? Powerless in the face of a criminal coup.
I'm writing to all my representatives to IMPEACH NOW. It may not get past corrupt Senate but it's got to be on the slime-ball's record. Unfit to serve. No re-election allowed.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | May 18, 2019 4:41 AM |
Impeach now is the stupidest move imaginable. They want that so bad. Just keep having hearings, shit is coming out almost daily now. Leaks are happening. He knows this is the only way he loses. He wants impeachment. He would wear it as a badge of honor. He doesn't want facts coming out. If this were impeachment hearings, no one would listen because they would feel it is an overreach. They'd tune it out. But constant hearings and leaks and shit coming out is damaging him. Nancy was whip smart to say impeachment was not something they were looking at "right now" but it wasn't off the table.
He can't run against that.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | May 18, 2019 4:48 AM |
Impeachment is a gift to Trump at this point. Only stupid people are saying, "Fuck the investigations and their chess-like strategy, I want simple, stupid, tic-tac-toe strategy that gives Trump a two X head start!"
by Anonymous | reply 133 | May 18, 2019 5:23 AM |
Agree.
KNOWING the Republican Senate is not going to convict based on a Democratic led impeachment, means impeachment, right now, will be viewed by many in the middle as just more political tit-for-tat.
However, using multiple investigations to reveal more and more Trumpian (and Republican - see Gaetz, Dowd, Ryan) dirt leaves it to the public to decide who they want to be in bed with. The White House (and the GOP) knows the latter could be devastating for them in 2020, which is why they are doing everything they can to resist (the report’s too big to file. WTF??) and to claim that “investigations ended” with our release of Mueller excerpts.

Jeb Bush wasn't the only campaign impacted by "outside forces." Chris Christie's campaign in New Hampshire was sandbagged by a super pac funded in part by a Russian oligarch. I think there were allegations about Marco Rubio's campaign being impacted similar to Jeb Bush, but I can't recall the specifics.
I would love to know if the Russians hacked the New Hampshire voter rolls, similar to what they did in Florida. There were definitely shenanigans going on in New Hampshire.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | May 18, 2019 4:36 PM |
Of course the Russians took down every republican candidate to make way for Pres Bone Spurs. It is obvious. It was so systematic it was almost comical.
Russians have absolutely hacked and changed votes. Yet, conservatives and our WH resident are so weak and beholden to them they've let them not only get away with it but have been licking their asses. The USA looks weak and feckless and all because of conservative thirst for power.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | May 18, 2019 4:42 PM |
We know from news articles that Jared Kushner and David Wildstein worked to derail Christie's initial campaign for governor through their website, but they failed (Corzine was that bad a governor). So Wildstein tunneled his way into the Christie administration, and when it looked like Christie was going to be the Republican frontrunner in the next presidential campaign, Wildstein took Christie out and walked away with a sweetheart deal. There was a news article that said Wildstein hoped to be part of a Trump administration, and this was years before Trump actually announced.
My unsupported conspiracy theory is that Trump went to Russia for the pageant and boasted about taking out Christie, probably taking all the credit for himself. At that point, the Russians knew they had their idiot candidate. And here we are.

I disagree about impeachment. The Democrats will look weak if they don't put a stain on Trump's time in office. It would be an awful look in history if he gets to roll through unscathed and there's no guarantee he won't be reelected.
The repub base is not going to get any more animated to vote for him again than they already are. Trump will always find something to shape the narrative that he's a success and a victim of the media and Democrats. If they don't impeach, Trump will incorporate that into his 2020 campaign saying they wanted to "but there was nothing there so they couldn't".
Impeaching him would make the Democratic base very happy and energized. Most of us know the Senate won't remove him but if all the evidence is laid out, it will be the repubs who look bad for voting no, not the Democrats for voting yes.
I agree there should be multiple televised hearings to lay out the case. I think that will convince more people.

Let the courts do their work. The first case will literally be decided next week, almost 100% guaranteed in the Democrats' favor, and the rest of the chips will fall into place. The Democrats are working methodically. The Repugs are working like 1000 clowns trying to get out of tiny car all at once. As I said before, impeachment is a gift to Trump. And, no, most of America has no idea how impeachment works and that the Repugs will find him not guilty in the Senate due to nothing other than politics. Ninety percent of Americans are idiots and they would see the Senate find him not guilty and say, "Well, guess he didn't do anything." This is a country where almost no one has read the Mueller report and just believed Barr's summary and went back to their phones. Don't ever overestimate the intelligence and knowledge of Americans as a whole or you will pay the price.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | May 18, 2019 5:43 PM |
I agree with R168. I want impeachment as much as anyone, but the Democrats are in a no win situation if they impeach Trump. It will backfire on them. Let them do what they're doing. They are following the rule of law and being methodical. Every day we get another bit of information that exposes Trump , his crooked administration, family and all the sycophantic Republicans. The democrats are not giving up and rolling over. They are finding ways and I believe that in the end, they will be victorious. Maybe, just maybe, in the weeks before people go to vote, they or some leaker, will drop the big one on Trump. Just like Comey did to Hillary.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | May 18, 2019 6:27 PM |
I agree too many Americans are idiots who lack comprehension skills or too lazy to get into the details of news stories BUT I was encouraged by the reaction to Kavanaugh. THe majority of Americans did not want him being confirmed and his confirmation led to a massive outcry that helped Democrats win the House by a big majority. So I do think if the case is laid out in televised hearings, Democrats can frame the narrative that despite all this evidence, the repubs don't want do do anything about it because they want to maintain power. The media could help too if they say that.

Having a Republican in Congress say this publically can only help. Notice that every day, there's always a new piece of news that comes out against Trump. Whether it's a GOP Congressman calling for impeachment or an audio tape or a letter from Mueller....all of these bits and pieces will start to build and take its toll.
As someone pointed out, when the Watergate hearings started, there was only about 19% of the public calling for Nixon's impeachment. That was June of 1973. By summer of 1974, it rose to 57%. And Nixon was smarter than Trump.

[quote]GOP Congressman @justinamash, who has read the redacted Mueller Report, concludes Barr has deliberately misrepresented the Report’s findings & Trump has committed impeachable offenses. He lays out his reasoning in this thread. Let’s hope he can help his colleagues grow a spine.
I am so absolutely untrusting after these last few years that I need to know what kind of guy Justin Amash is before I make a conclusion. Was he a Trump supporter up until now? Was he a rabid Republican or somewhat moderate before now? Is his constituency more moderate?
The reason I will only trust this after knowing all of that kind of stuff is because I still think impeaching Trump and having him not be convicted by McConnell's Senate would be an absolute gift to Trump going into 2020. Pelosi has stated that she will not even consider moving forward until it's a bipartisan move. Well, this give her that bipartisanship. So, I'm wondering if this guy was the chosen sacrificial lamb to take the hit to work them closer to getting the Dems to go to full impeachment more quickly because the Repugs thought they weren't moving fast enough for it to have the best outcome for Trump for 2020 in their fucking upside down world logic.
Unless some others soon follow, I'm going to have a hard time believing this isn't some gamesmanship. I hope this opens the floodgates. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Of course we're all frustrated. The GOP is burning down the institutions of democratic government as we speak.
Will "slow and steady investigation" work? Are there enough courts still tied to the rule of law to force the GOP's hand? Guess we'll all find out together over the next several months.
Doesn't help that this is the biggest political scandal in American history. Think about it. Our government is currently being run by a loose organization of fascist dictators around the world tied to the Russian mob.

How possible is it to, not only remove Trump from office, but prove that he was never the legitimate president in the first place.
Could we then undo every pardon, every judge appointment, etc?
I think from the point of his removal onward there should be a committee - even a cabinet position - devoted to rectifying what Trump has wrought and incarcerate maybe not those who simply benefited from his promotions, but certainly those who were in on the fix.
Cabinet members who knowingly accepted appointments running departments they intended to undermine.
Kavanaugh should not only be removed, but arrested, as should Kennedy for knowingly retiring early - not to mention Kennedy’s son.
The Blackwater war criminal that’s about to be pardoned should have that pardon overturned, and Prince arrested because he’s in on the fix, as is his sister DeVos.
These people are pirates. Hijackers.

This Trump presidency, aka regime, should be declared illegitimate either while Trump is still in the White House or, more likely, after. Of course I doubt Pelosi would try waste any resources on something like that and rather focus on making the best of a really bad situation and fix all the messes that are bubbling on the surface and leaving those underneath untouched and that includes those Trump and GOP appointed judges. I believe the only way we will get rid of Barr and Kavenaugh is when they drink or eat themselves to death. So I'd send the worst junk food and moonshine possible to them. No, he has not been a Trump supporter. He's a "true-believer" Republican ... a strict constitutionalist, almost a libertarian. He represents my district and though I've never voted for him, I appreciate the fact that he is consistent with his principles. (I just don't agree with many of them.) He's voted against the Republicans on a number of issues and many R lawmakers are not at all fond of him. There's no way he's doing the bidding of Trump or establishment Republicans.

During WWII, the world was in crisis but Americans really rallied together around Democratic President FDR. Positivity and patriotism to support American troops was broadcast in print and on the radio and even in popular songs. My relatives that grew up during WWII during 1939 to 1945 still retain that positivity.
In the early Obama years of hope, it felt more positive until GOP obstructionism killed anything and everything he proposed.
Now we are so divided and fractured. tRump has allowed America's true colors to be revealed. America is in or near a Constitutional crisis and everthing feels so TOXIC. We face several serious threats and a house divided against itself cannot stand.

Putin is establishing friendly autocracies around the world. It's a blend of masterful manipulation, criminal behavior/thuggery, financial greed, and the thirst for control and power. DJT was an incredibly easy pawn in this scheme. Dangle illicit money before him and stroke his ego. It works all the time.
But the big failure is the corporate media for not exposing the corruption early. They embraced the fix for ratings and luring advertisers.
Congress consists of power hungry Republicans that put party above country, and caters to the super rich while throwing bones at their base to stir shit to get elected/re-elected. Democrats play nicer, but get diverted and frustrated, due to a corrupt Executive Branch and a complicit GOP majority in the Senate. Special interests compromise Democrats as well, though in a somewhat different and considerably less sinister way.
Perhaps ultimately, the worst of all is the electorate. Too much of it is under-informed, inadequately educated, lack critical thinking, apathetic, confuse propaganda (Fox, etc.) as news, vulnerable to excessive identity politics, and show disinterest in being civic minded.
The cable media is already pushing a horserace for 2020. Pundits have began labeling and "upping and dowing" Democratic candidates before the first debate will occur. Regardless of how unpopular Trump may be in the polls, the media will facilitate a rise for him to generate election season drama, again for ratings. The Jake Tappers, the S. E Cupps, the Chuck Todds, and the Steve Kornachis, and their bosses, have the established motivations for such.

The Democratic Party, especially the Dem representatives in the House, need to be a united front and on the same page. Showing signs of weakness and infighting would be really bad optics right now. And it's all about optics these days with the general public.
Nancy Pelosi might play the long game and it's makes very much sense on paper / in theory, but in practice it does not get the general public exited. We live in an instant gratification society where "Impeachement NOW!" is a thing and a "cooler heads will prevail" is boooooooring!
Know your audience. I know Nancy's approach is a sound one, but she needs to sell it to the public which wants someone to not just stand up to Trump but some sassy superhero chick, like in the superhero blockbusters, standing up to the bad guys. Some extreme ones even want Nancy to deliver them Trump's head on a silver platter and Nancy said quite clear that she's not the one who is going for that.
Nancy needs a good PR team playing Trump's optics game on the Liberal side. Like when she and Chuck Schumer pulled one over Trump in that surprise televised interaction.
Sorry if that makes me a divisive troll.
We need more cool, red coated Nancy!
by Anonymous | reply 355 | May 21, 2019 6:23 AM |
I think by nature Democrats aren't primarily a "follow the leader" kind of group. That doesn't mean that we can't or outright won't, it just means that we pay attention, weigh and measure.
We question our leaders, we question people in power, we wonder if they're doing a good enough job because we have the ability to and because generally they do listen.
I think when you're a leader in the Democratic party you have to expect that and that is what makes us wonderful because through that process we get real progress forward.
We're not like the Republicans and their voters who blindly follow their President's lead without question. We don't believe everything that we're fed. We don't put party over country. We "read" the articles.
While I understand we don't want to appear to be "divisive" I think the divisiveness is a symptom of a different problem and R355 gave a great explanation of one aspect of it.
by Anonymous | reply 356 | May 21, 2019 6:46 AM |
Nancy's doing the smart thing. She's doing the "no, no impeachment is IMPOSSIBLE, it's too extreme...." while other Democrats call for it so as to make it look like the party is so torn about the idea because they don't want to look like it's a partisan 'witch hunt'. If Democrats appear divided, then it makes the issue look more objective.
Meanwhile, day by day, Trump gets the stuffing knocked out of him- either a judge rules against him or a GOP in Congress calls him out or another Republican says he'll vote for Weld.....it's all a constant drip, drip, drip that keeps building and building.
Nancy will pull the trigger once there are enough people ignoring subpoenas and more leaks get added to the pile.
The timeframe will probably end up being the same timeframe that it took to get rid of Nixon. Maybe less, since he was a lot smarter than Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 357 | May 21, 2019 6:47 AM |

Nearly two out of three voters say Democrats should not initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump and a majority say it’s time to turn the page on the Russia investigation, according to a new poll.
The latest Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey found that 65 percent of respondents oppose impeachment proceedings. A majority of Democrats polled, 56 percent, support impeachment, however, only 32 percent of independents and 14 percent of Republicans are in favor.
A majority of respondents, 58 percent, said it’s time to turn the page on the Russia investigations, including 60 percent of independents, although two-thirds of Democrats want to see further investigations.
Impeachment ranks fourth on the list of priorities voters have for the Democratic-controlled House, behind addressing the status of immigrants in the country illegally, stimulating the economy and strengthening ObamaCare.
“It seems that impeachment is over as a real threat to the Trump presidency though the base of the Democratic Party remains energized on the issue,” said Harvard CAPS/Harris polling director Mark Penn. “Overall though, the voters want Democrats to get back to issues over investigations and they may pay a price for not listening to them.”

If impeachment is already started then there is nothing to hold over Trump's head to get him to resign. This is what she is waiting for. If she does impeachment it will make his base crazy and God only knows what they will do. They are all armed, remember? If he resigns then the base has nothing to stand on. That is the whole plot of the Trump saga. The only way to stop a cheater is complete exposure and to achieve that, the House needs to impeach.

[quote]Nearly two out of three voters say Democrats should not initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump and a majority say it’s time to turn the page on the Russia investigation, according to a new poll.
Piece of advice when you see this or any "poll":
Go to the source of the poll.
See what the sample size was.
See how the poll's information was acquired.
See what questions were really asked.
In the article it states:
[quote]The Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll online survey of 1,536 registered voters was conducted from April 30 to May 1. The sample size is made up of 37 percent Democrats, 32 percent Republicans and 29 percent independents.
And going to their website we learn a bit more from the Harvard CAPS pdf. So they asked +/- 568 Democrats they found online, "Do you think that, for his actions, President Trump should be impeached and removed from office, censured by Congress, or no action should be taken?"
And upon looking at their other questions on their website PDFs from last month, assuming they asked all the same questions, they're all clearly biased.

by Anonymous | reply 375 | May 21, 2019 11:22 AM |
Correction: the House can impeach without any Republicans at all, since the Democrats hold a majority. The Senate, which has more Republicans, would probably vote against conviction. The sticking point is whether impeachment by the House followed by exoneration by the Senate would hurt the Democrats, by making Trump look vindicated, or help the Democrats, by bringing out all Trump's dirt and making the Senate Republicans look corrupt.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | May 21, 2019 11:36 AM |
The impeachment concept is not necessarily to actually impeach DT it is to get the investigations and witnesses coming forth to overcome the stonewalling. That's my read. The Administration is trying to force the D's hand by stonewalling. They think impeachment will benefit them.

R377 I agree. Start impeachment hearings. Use the power of impeachment to bring all the witnesses and let them all publicly testify. Get all his financial information out in public as well. Hours upon hours of hearing how corrupt Trump and his clan are will slowly start to penetrate the masses. Let the House vote to impeach. If the Senate doesn't convict, it will make them look even more guilty in the cover-up and certainly won't help their re-election chances.

Pro-life, anti-women and people of color, pro-guns, pro bombing adversaries (Iraq, Iran etc) into smithereens while killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the process. Currently, and surprisingly, followers of dictators and authoritarians.
Anti earth, innovation, imagination (except for selfish purposes), civil rights. They are ruining our beautiful earth and unable to make anything meaningful great again.

Democrats read Mueller report aloud in U.S. Capitol hearing room
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday held a marathon reading of the redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 448-page assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The reading began at noon EDT (1700 GMT) and was expected to take 12 to 14 hours. For those who could not make it to the Capitol hearing room to listen, it was being broadcast on C-SPAN and lawmakers plan to release a podcast version.Representative Mary Gay Scanlon, one of the top Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, started the reading and nearly two dozen of her colleagues were to take part.

Imagine someone at home watching and being appalled at the lies and corrupt behavior, and the republicans trying to defend it. It will send a clear message to the American people. Watch this if you can. It's showing tonight on PBS. Frontline: Supreme Revenge, all about how Scum Mitch McConnell vowed to get revenge after his Supreme Court pick was rejected by Democrats during the Reagan presidency 30 YEARS AGO. Ever since he has been skewing the courts right wing in an effort to curtail our rights, benefit the rich and greedy, all against the express wishes of the American citizenry.
Also on Rachel Maddow tonight she talked about how trump is stocking the IRS full of his cronies to block access to his finances. Many other posts go empty while he put his attention to the IRS and protecting himself. Vacancies include heads of Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Department of Interior, FEMA, and Secret Service. But the IRS? Stocked with trump allies.
Trump and McConnell are evil. McConnell found his perfect match in trump. Together they will bring down America, and we must stop them.

I'm all for the House Democrats building the case. The problem is it's impossible to build the case if no one testifies at hearings. We need the witnesses and Mueller to provide damning testimonies because most of the country did not read the Mueller report.
Unfortunately I saw an interview earlier today with a prosecutor who has worked with Mueller. He said he's not surprised about Mueller's reservations because he doesn't want to appear political and also he's not trying a case so he might just say "it's all in the report". He's not sure even if Mueller testifies that it will be explosive as Democrats in the House wish. Mueller might not give his opinions outside of what was written in his report since that's the protocol.
by Anonymous | reply 458 | May 22, 2019 3:24 AM |
The pundits will do nothing. They are only interested in ratings There are no heroes in the Television establishment and few if any in the newspapers either. We have to raise support among the people or we don't have a chance. Mueller, all the people we believed in. Yeah, right. If nonone will show up for hearings, and basically the Congress has no authority to put these people in jail? THere is essentially nor recourse. They have to impeach him. I hope there are hearings to get the info they need but I don 't understand exactly ohow that works. But their refusal to cooperate in any way? What else can Congress do but tart hearings? the definition of dObstruction of Justice they have already publicly done?
by Anonymous | reply 459 | May 22, 2019 3:30 AM |
R458 It's not just about the report anymore. Mueller can confirm how the investigation was ended (many think prematurely) by Barr and how Barr misrepresented the Report to Congress and the public! Getting rid of Barr is very important to precede with any meaningful Congressional investigations.
by Anonymous | reply 460 | May 22, 2019 3:32 AM |
If the Democrats declare this an impeachment investigation, I read that it immediately turns the Judiciary committee into a Grand Jury. At that point, the subpoenas become Grand Jury subpoenas, enforceable as such. They don't need to actually impeach him, but they need to make these investigations officially impeachment investigations. I think that is where they are headed and they are doing so methodically so everything holds up when challenged. I want them to hurry but, more importantly, I want them to do it right.

Again: House impeaches. Senate convicts.
But it’s not enough to impeach (even with a conviction), it’s not enough that Trump is removed from office, it’s not enough that Trump goes down in history as the worst US President.
It must be established that DONALD J. TRUMP WAS NEVER PRESIDENT. The election was illegitimate.
Our elections were highjacked, our electoral college corrupted, our Republican congress compromised and the person presiding over the USA from the Oval Office was placed there by a foreign enemy.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | May 22, 2019 5:15 AM |
I can understand why Democrats see the polls that say the public isn't behind impeachment yet and they obviously won't get the Senate onboard---but couldn't they split the difference?
Say, start an impeachment inquiry---get the testimony in public---get as much documentation out to the public as possible. Then, if the public needle moves towards impeachment, great. But if not, couldn't Democrats then pull back and say, well, there's just not enough evidence to support it?
At least the Democrats would appear to be open and above board and they might do enough damage to Trump in the meantime to hobble him going into 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 465 | May 22, 2019 5:33 AM |
R463, when the Judiciary Committee becomes a Grand Jury looking into impeachment, they move from a legislative body to a criminal court. The penalties of the Judicial system apply instead of the Congressional penalties. They go to jail and, I believe, Barr is removed from the enforcement equation. The federal marshalls will go arrest those who ignore their subpoenas.

R463, I agree but it's more than just Putin, it's insidious evil corruption from within. It's the Republican party itself. I watched the Frontline: Supreme Revenge program tonight and was sickened by the betrayal by McConnell and others beginning in the Reagan era. It's right wingers in our own country who are selling out to billionaires and extreme social conservatives to skew all of our federal courts to the right.
McConnell told Trump he would back him if he chose judges from the Federalist Society's (right wing legal group) list of conservative judges and trump agreed. McConnell was willing to let a friend of Putin into the White House to further his own vengeful ends. Republicans put up with trump because he's doing their bidding to get and keep power.
And now a Russian company with ties to Putin that recently faced sanctions is investing in a plant in Kentucky. Where the coal jobs disappeared the Russians showed up.

It's also not the 70s anymore. Today's technology means we can easily call people on phones from wherever we are, we can print and transmit documents within seconds, we can research electronic copies of nearly anything we'd want to read. We don't need a "library" and one copy of the Mueller report so the public could read it. They can go to any computer and download it. Yes, R484. The Democrats are in a no win situation. But, as so many pundits have said, the public was against the impeachment of Richard Nixon UNTIL they started to hear and see the televised proceedings. Although it's all in there, no one is actually reading The Mueller Report.

The Dems, including Nancy Pelosi, should not base their action on what may benefit Trump (the most). They should base their decisions on why the mid-term voters voted for them and get more voters to trust them to do the right thing and get Trump out of the White House.

The Watergate timeline is of course the main comparison with this crisis; but this is by magnitudes worse.
Nixon's family and the GOP weren't in the frame for deep corrupt interactions with a vast hostile foreign power. And all we know too well which has come from that.
Point being given the corruption is so wide and embedded, the GOP will dig in as hard as possible. Bringing legal light to bear is obviously no swift simple task.
Nancy's public assertion that The President is involved in a cover-up is no small matter. The sane world knows it was the cover-up which finished Nixon. In this case though, there's those magnitudes more covered up.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | May 22, 2019 3:20 PM |

DOJ is offering to work with Judiciary Committee and provide unredacted material and source documents if they don't hold Barr in contempt. I have a feeling this change of tactic has to do with the fact that the committee changes structure under an official Impeachment Hearing i.e. basically becomes a Grand Jury which can take people into custody for refusing to comply with a subpoena.

Nancy using the phrase "cover up" was smart. It's a call back to Nixon's cover-up. That's one way to start getting the public onside - compare him to Nixon.
The plan also seems to be to wait until he starts defying court orders. Once he thinks he can bully judges and ignore their orders, it's over for him. Nancy knows that which is probably why she's moving carefully with the "I" word.
by Anonymous | reply 541 | May 22, 2019 5:50 PM |

Imagine if a tranche of bad stories pile up, he knows more are coming, he hasn't had a recent rally, he's tired, and a persistent reporter keeps on asking him a sharp question about cover-ups. Did we know this? (From Feb)
The Russian propaganda machine that tried to influence the 2016 U.S. election is now promoting the presidential aspirations of a controversial Hawaii Democrat who earlier this month declared her intention to run for president in 2020.
An NBC News analysis of the main English-language news sites employed by Russia in its 2016 election meddling shows Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who is set to make her formal announcement Saturday, has become a favorite of the sites Moscow used when it interfered in 2016.

I don’t want to believe Bernie was a spy but this is what concerns me.
A lot of his actions have benefited you know who.
Even his decision to run against Hillary. And his missed sanction votes. And although I’m sympathetic to his platform, it is just extreme enough to pick off left wing votes.
It all adds up to a benefit to those who want us divided. The fascists control the left and right in those countries. And it looks like the UK as well with their compromised labor leader.
I don’t want to think that Bernie is caught up in all this. But there’s a lot of smoke. Maybe he is an unwitting accomplice.
