Say what you will but Renée Zellwegger, Julia Roberts, Hugh grant have all delivered non-flat performances in this genre. Let’s not forget WA “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” for which Penelope won an Oscar. I didn’t really get a sense of the character that Timmy is supposed to be playing in that trailer.

Timmy is aware that he can go over the top sometimes, in one of his actor on actor talkes he said how he was working on taking away from his acting. But sometimes in real life we are loud with big movements, so you need to find the right balance. The diner scene in BB was not his best, in my opinion the breaking in to his father's house and the car chase were magnificent moments of acting. Timmy's strength is that he is aware of his shortcomings and is working on them; he is a work in progress and I hope to see the best in the future.

If you compare him to a young Dicaprio it's so noticeable. Fortunately he's working on reining it in whereas Dicaprio upped the ham as his career progressed. And it's good to keep in mind that certain roles like in BB and the King require to go big whereas roles like Elio are all about naturalism and being lived in so it's not a good comparison.
