'Rocketman' Blazes Trail as First Major Studio Film to Depict Gay Male Sex

Paramount's Elton John biopic made its long-awaited debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night. Where other studios have balked, Paramount is leading the way as the first major studio to depict gay male sex onscreen with its Elton John biopic, Rocketman.

The Dexter Fletcher-helmed film, which made its long-awaited debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night, featured multiple scenes between Taron Egerton, who plays John, and Richard Madden (portraying his first gay lover, music manager John Reid).

There were multiple scenes that included men kissing, simulated oral sex and a steamy bedroom scene with both Egerton and Madden unclothed.

Other films have shown a sex scene between two men, including Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain and Luca Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name, which certainly struck a chord with audiences, making $178 million and $42 million, respectively. But neither were ever aimed at broad audiences like Rocketman and were released by specialty labels — Brokeback Mountain by Focus Features and Call Me by Your Name by Sony Pictures Classics.

In the '70s and early '80s, gay male sex occasionally popped up in films from companies that might be comparable to a Paramount today. For instance, United Artists backed the 1980 Al Pacino thriller Cruising, about a serial killer targeting gay men. But in recent decades, the prospect of major studios depicting steamy gay sex has become a nonstarter. Fox's Bohemian Rhapsody didn't feature any despite the fact that its protagonist, Freddie Mercury, was bisexual and died of AIDS-related complications. The 1982 Harry Hamlin starter Making Love also broke ground at the time for depicting a gay male couple.

y contrast, Rocketman tackles its subject's sexual awakening without flinching. What's more noteworthy is that it comes at a time when there are only five major studios left, standing in the wake of Disney acquiring Fox (Warner Bros., Universal and Sony also remain).

Given that an R-rated movie featuring gay sex would most certainly disqualify a film from release in China (to score a release in the lucrative territory, Bohemian Rhapsody edited out any suggestion that Freddie Mercury was gay), the studios are increasingly hesitant to greenlight a film with gay characters, never mind graphic gay sex. But Paramount chief Jim Gianopulos did just that when he put the $41 million Rocketman into production.

For his part, Egerton, who identifies as heterosexual, is surprised by all the hullabaloo surrounding the film's gay sex scenes.

In a cover story with THR, he said: "Everyone is obsessed with it. … For me, kissing a man onscreen is no less appealing than kissing a woman onscreen. I'm not in any way repulsed by the male form. It's an uncomfortable thing regardless of who you're with — it makes no difference as to your sexual preference."

Meh, “studio” is so meaningless these days.

by Anonymousreply 1May 16, 2019 11:52 PM

Is there nudity?

by Anonymousreply 2May 17, 2019 12:02 AM

I am shocked...SHOCKLED, I tell you, that Egerton would be so blase about gay sex....

by Anonymousreply 3May 17, 2019 2:58 AM

blah blah blah blah

by Anonymousreply 4May 17, 2019 4:47 AM

Can’t wait to see this. Egerton and Richard Madden. Yum.

by Anonymousreply 5May 17, 2019 5:23 AM

Joel is really cute but they made him ugly as hell to emulate Elton

by Anonymousreply 6May 17, 2019 5:28 AM

I don’t find him ugly as Elton.

by Anonymousreply 7May 17, 2019 5:31 AM

Compared to the Kingsman movie he was in. . .

by Anonymousreply 8May 17, 2019 5:34 AM

People want to see this to see Taron Egerton have sex with Richard Madden but no one would have wanted to see Elton John having sex with John Reid.

Die in a grease fire, r10.

by Anonymousreply 11May 17, 2019 6:21 AM

Put away. Elton, you are most unattractive man.

by Anonymousreply 12May 17, 2019 6:41 AM

Good. Most of the execs balk if they think a movie or tv show is too gay. The execs behind these decisions are not only idiots, they're clueless. The Glamorous pilot had to be "retooled". It has 5 gay characters, wonder how many it will have after the retooling? Probably 2, the bare minimum. The reason the execs are idiots is because 1) We live in 2019. Diversity is the way to go. Nobody wants to see the same heterosexual stories over and over again, it's boring. 2) We live in a time where gay marriage is legal. Yet we hardly ever see gay characters on tv or in movies. It's time execs get with the program and depict real life on tv, gays are here and we want to be represented. 3) We live in a time where shipping culture is strong. People WANT to see gay romance on tv. The gay couples on shows like Elite and The Society are the most popular ones of all the couples and probably the main reason why people tune in in the first place. Gay romance will lead to more viewers, not less.

You can be Gay in America, you just cant talk or have sex in front of breeders. Essentially, straight Americans want their gays to be flamboyant Unics.

I am tired of that bullshit. It's almost 2020, time for things to change. No one is forcing them to watch a movie about a famous gay men. I have to put up with straight people having sex on screen all the time and I don't walk out just because of it. Can you imagine if the same social rules were applied to Shades of Grey?

by Anonymousreply 14May 17, 2019 7:17 AM

No one was bothered by two men kissing in Bohemian Rhapsody, even a few years ago that would have been unthinkable. Do we really need to see simulated oral sex in a musical biopic?

by Anonymousreply 15May 17, 2019 7:21 AM

We need to see it, R15

by Anonymousreply 16May 17, 2019 7:46 AM

When I watched Broke Back Mountain at the Grove in Los Angels not far from West Hollywood, I still saw 2 couples walk out of the theater during the simulated sex scene. Even in a big liberal city there are a lot of people who are still basically homophobic unless you are their hair dresser or cake decorator.

by Anonymousreply 17May 17, 2019 7:47 AM

R15 But they started out not wanting to show ANY gay affection in that movie. They managed to include ONE gay kiss. How is that progress? Sure, it's better than nothing, but come on. The movie should have depicted more of his love life.

by Anonymousreply 18May 17, 2019 7:47 AM

r17...what did they expect to see in Brokeback Mountain?

by Anonymousreply 19May 17, 2019 8:28 AM

Sterilized Gays R19. Straight people are "ok with gays" as long as you don't really talk about having sex with each other. They want to pretend all we do is arrange flowers, cut hair and decorate their shitty middle class homes for free. But show a real love or sex scene and its freak out time.

by Anonymousreply 20May 17, 2019 9:14 AM

Breeders want us to be flamboyant and part-unicorn? I wouldn't be surprised. The way the conservative types are chemically castrating their gay kids, it does show they'd rather we grow up as eunuchs, anything rather than happy, healthy, intact, sexual adults.

by Anonymousreply 21May 17, 2019 9:20 AM

Do they fuck in missionary position or doggy style, as all hets believe we can only fuck from behind?

by Anonymousreply 22May 17, 2019 1:09 PM

Even after that Oscar Wilde movie, R22? I thought the heteros loved that movie.

by Anonymousreply 23May 17, 2019 1:13 PM

Did any hets actually see Wilde?

by Anonymousreply 24May 17, 2019 9:40 PM

Just saw it; good, but not great. Sex scene was clearly sex, fairly hot but no real nudity, not even an ass. Later tho Taron is possibly naked in a quick-change scene, we need someone to slo-mo and zoom in on that.

by Anonymousreply 25May 31, 2019 4:57 AM

R14 Unics?

by Anonymousreply 26May 31, 2019 6:07 AM

Taron actually has his legs up in the air with Richard on top of him

by Anonymousreply 27May 31, 2019 6:11 AM

It don't count if we don't see dicks

by Anonymousreply 28May 31, 2019 6:36 AM

The poor dim straights are going to be confused by that r27

by Anonymousreply 29May 31, 2019 7:33 AM

No actual dicks or asses were shown in this film. The "steamy" gay sex scene was 20 seconds of them taking each others clothes off, exposing bare chests, and then the camera fades in to the window above them.

Ridiculous. This is all we get, for all the "first major studio" nonsense?? I feel like we've seen more than this before in other films.

by Anonymousreply 30June 2, 2019 4:55 PM

Unless we see a dick go into an asshole, it’s not gay sex.

by Anonymousreply 31June 2, 2019 5:01 PM

That’s not realistic - you don’t see a peen entering a vag in a straight, R-rated movie. They had 2 naked guys on top of each other with legs in the air; it was very obviously sex. It would have been more fun doggy style, I think they could have cheated the angle a bit to not show penetration (and thus get an X rating).

by Anonymousreply 32June 6, 2019 8:23 AM

No one wants to see elton john have sex.

by Anonymousreply 33June 6, 2019 8:28 AM

Fun film! Lots of musical numbers, good performances, Madden was a sexy beast, and the gay sex was there, but didn't even scandalize the elderly aunt I went with.

Of course, the first half of the film was waaaay more fun than the second half, I can't say it was as good as "Bohemian Rhaphsody". But then, the Queen guys were all more interesting and likeable than Elton John.

by Anonymousreply 34June 6, 2019 9:32 AM

[quote]I feel like we've seen more than this before in other films.

Not in a major, non-indie Hollywood film, we haven’t.

by Anonymousreply 35June 6, 2019 9:40 AM

WILDE was released by Sony in the US and I would have thought that counted.

by Anonymousreply 36June 6, 2019 9:43 AM

Meh!

You realize few know about that movie? ⤴️

by Anonymousreply 38June 6, 2019 11:37 AM

Someone please explain to me how a "sex scene" in a non-pornagraphic, theatrically-released motion picture is essential to the plot and purpose of the film.

by Anonymousreply 39June 6, 2019 11:39 AM

It may not be "essential," but it is more authentic and more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 40June 6, 2019 12:06 PM

[quote]You realize few know about that movie?

More do now!

It's a good movie too.

- Javier

by Anonymousreply 41June 6, 2019 5:29 PM

Actually, I thought it was essential, in that it showed that Elton was definitely the bottom and was playing the bitch in the relationship for a reason.

by Anonymousreply 42June 6, 2019 9:06 PM

Meh

by Anonymousreply 43June 8, 2019 1:57 AM

[quote]Essentially, straight Americans want their gays to be flamboyant Unics.

Oh Dear! for guarding the harem however we prefer "staight-acting" ones

by Anonymousreply 44June 8, 2019 2:15 AM

I seem to recall the sex scene showed Taron on top with Richard’s legs in the air....

by Anonymousreply 45June 8, 2019 2:54 AM

[quote]That’s not realistic - you don’t see a peen entering a vag in a straight, R-rated movie.

No but in movies like American Gigolo, you saw Richard Gere's peen standing by a window. That was 40 fucking years ago.

by Anonymousreply 46June 8, 2019 3:16 AM

I just saw it. The movie is wonderful. Elton John was my generations Elvis and those songs are hardwired in my brain. The movie is really a musical and not a film with songs. The songs propel the story forward. Egerton is marvelous and made acting choices that reveal EJ’s vulnerability. There was a wounded child under all that theatricality.
