The old Eisenhower Repugs were always so frustrating because you could not convince them that Reagan, W and Trump weren't even close to the kind of Republicans they were used to.

But I also think a lot of these guys, Fred Rogers included, had religious objections to liberal ideals (i.e. they didn't think women should have abortions or equal rights, felt people just needed to pick themselves up by their bootstraps, etc.) that they were too polite to say publicly but which drove them to vote Repug and against their own self interests.

Tab was a Merv Griffin-type gay -- conservative instincts, good with money, horsey-set, dignified.

Never did understand why conservative gays were willing to vote for Reagan et al. instead of just sitting out.

I read Tab s book. It appeared to me he was completely down to earth, compassionate, extremely discrete. He came across as very likeable. He wasnt good with money during his hey day as a star. WHen he started working the dinner theatre circuit and worked 24/7 he became good friends with a wealthy eccentric gay doctor from texas.......very eccentric. Anyway this guy either handled Tab s finances or helped him out andTab started to get rich. He also did well on his last house in Beverly hills and his ranch in santa fe as to selling for a lot more than he paid.

In the older gay crowd that has money, they vote their pocketbooks and think republicans are better for their portfolios (untrue actually). I also would guess some of these guys arent really all that political. One friend who falls into this category on why he voted republican by saying the gay issue im the republican party is only one issue and he generally agrees with their economic policies more than with dems. It is the I made it myself and everybody is on their own and I dont believe in handouts thinking...............

My parents were like this. You could ask my mother her views on any social issue—abortion rights, gay rights, equal pay for equal work, whatever—and she would always come down on the side of the Democrats, but she grew up a country-club, Eisenhower Republican and you just couldn't convince her that voting Republican was voting against her values. She now has dementia and my father died in 2013, so thankfully neither cast a vote for Trump.

Mr. Rogers's wife thinks he would be vocally against Trump if he were still alive.
