[quote]There isn't a single person under the age of 50 who's seen anything Doris Day ever did.

She had a TV show in the 1970s that was geared toward kids, she was a regular on the Tonight Show until the mid 1970s, and had a career resurgence in the late 80s and early 1990s when she received some awards and appeared in a few TV documentaries.

I get that you're exaggerating for effect, but I think a lot of people under 50 have actually seen her and know who she is.

Rudy Vallee was a big star in his day. One of the first superstar crooners. Even got name-checked several times in "Some Like it Hot." Today people still talk about Sinatra, and perhaps every so often, Bing Crosby, but who ever mentions Rudy Vallee?

Similarly Frankie Laine and Johnnie Ray were popular pre-Rock 'n' Roll singers who paved the way for Elvis and Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, but those two music pioneers are largely forgotten.

Every living and dead ‘famous’ opera singer and ballet dancer. The top ranks always appeared on national entertainment and talk shows. Everyone knew who they were even if they had no interest in the arts. That’s all over, and so is high art stardom.

I wonder if Renee Fleming even needs to wear sunglasses at the airport?

I'm also one of those "whatever happened to so-and-so?" people who discover the actor/actress in question (who I thought had disappeared) have been on a series for years, much to my surprise. I had no idea they were still working, but scanning Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime tells me otherwise.

274 posts and no one mentioned Betty Grable. That says it all. She was literally the biggest female box office star of the 40's and arguably the biggest in history. She was in the top 10 Box Office Stars EVERY year for a solid 10 years. Even Cary Grant can't say that. She was the only woman. And today no one under 50 could name even ONE of her movies. If she's known at all, it's for a poster she was photographed for during WWII.

The Internet has proved Andy Warhol correct. Everyone now has the potential of becoming a celebrity for a moment. And, then just as quickly, forgotten. Many of us over the age of 45 grew up with a common popular culture mediated through radio, television, and film. Add to that, our experience as gay men predisposed us to become fonts of useless information. So, the majority of us probably know all those named here.

That's lost. Everyone's in their own world these day...no longer can we assume that everyone watches or listens to the same films, tv shows, or music.

As for reading...well...Herman Wouk just passed away...middlebrow culture is dead.

Milton Berle. Surprising he's forgotten - he allegedly had the biggest dick in New York AND Hollywood: 13 inches.

He had an affair with 1920's radio evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. He wasn't converted but they said she was.

At his Friar's Club memorial service, Friar Freddy Roman began with, "We are here to honor Milton Berle, who passed away on March 27th." He went on. "On May 1st and May 2nd, his penis will be buried." The laughter was long and knowing. Dozens more Milton Berle penis jokes followed. Friar Bob Melvin said, "I saw him sink a four-foot putt with his penis."

How could people forget?

George Michael. When Doris Day a passed a BBC broadcaster replied on the news of Ms. Day death. "How is George Michael doing. He did mention her in that Go-Go song." She was told he died, and many people on Twitter were laughing about this. He went from being in the same category as Prince and Michael Jackson to a punch line. Even in death George is still made out to be a joke.

by Anonymousreply 414May 21, 2019 1:57 AM

R414. I don't understand your comment. Did you state that Doris day was asked about George. Yes it was sad how in death he is not as celebrated. The last time the u.s media mentioned him really was when his toxicology reports was mentioned in the media and that is about it.

R415 The day Doris Day pass was the day many people discovered George Michael was dead. It all happen on a podcast in Britain of all places, called The Receipts Podcast. One of the host named Tolly asked how George was feeling when he got the new Doris Day had pass. The other host informed her that George had already pass before Doris. This cause some of their fans to make a joke of Tolly not knowing that George was dead. Also they were not aware of George's passing. George Michael died was a hash tag on May 12, 2019

Here are a few Tweets.

Broadway royalty who never transferred to film recognition:

Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne

Katherine Cornell

The Lunts did a stagey film of The Guardsman (1931), which was dated even then. Cornell’s only film role was playing herself, in Stage Door Canteen (1943), wherein she recites Shakespeare’s Balcony Scene from Romeo and Juliet, with a fanboy soldier.

(Growing up in the 50’s, I saw a number of appearances the Lunts gave on TV, usually in the Hallmark Hall of Fame, but they were creaky vehicles, like The Great Sebastians. Who remembers that? Even then they were relics.)

I don't know what is wrong with R414 / R420 but that doesn't prove George Michael is a joke. People were making fun of the presenter not knowing Michael had died when it was major news for weeks at the time, not even three years ago.

And who cares what some nobody with 170 followers says on Twitter? Don't copy their whole damn timeline over here, nobody cares.

R425 This would never happen to Jackson and Bowie.. Yeah I got that. However some poster were not aware of George's passing. Then when they discovered the news it was funny to them. Everything was posted if you want to dig deeper you are free to, but I think its strange that George Michael is still consider a joke even in death. If his estate and team focus more on George's talent and not his three paid whore's. Then those people who live in Britain (not all, but some) would have known the man has been dead going on three years,

I remember reading there was a girl singer named Joanie whom Barbra Streisand cited as one of her teenage vocal influences. I can't work out if it's Joni James or Joanie Sommers, but the record at R460 does have little hints of Barbra's unconventional phrasing and breathy emotion. Anyone know?
