Tim Conway is DEAD to me

I personally never found him funny.

by Anonymousreply 54May 15, 2019 2:17 AM

Aww, too bad. He was hysterical with all the other people around him.

And that’s your third, right?

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2019 5:03 PM

I agree with OP. He was dull and obvious, which can work for a secondary character on a sitcom (like McHale's Navy) but he couldn't carry a sketch and his comic appeal for Burnett and others always escaped me.

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2019 5:07 PM

He had multiple failed sitcoms which suggests he couldn't carry much on his own.

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2019 5:07 PM

I thought he was good in character sometimes - like the nerdy boss to Carol's ditzy secretary.

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2019 5:07 PM

I thought he was dead.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2019 5:07 PM

Aw, c'mon OP. You don't find this sketch hysterical?

What a pile of shits here.

Conway was perfect for what he was. The loose ones here think that being a brilliant supporting character player and comedian is less than brilliant.

Boring? The bored are always the most boring people in a room.

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2019 5:13 PM

I thought he was cute.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2019 5:13 PM

It always amused me that the rest of the cast on the Carol Burnette Show thought he was SO FUCKING FUNNY.

That was the only thing funny about him.

He was such a ham and they were so in his thrall that they allowed him to go on and on and on and on with bits that were stupid and boring.

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2019 5:14 PM

I never liked his efforts to upstage everyone on Carol Burnett's show, but I did think this ski was a riot, especially the cameo by Hitler.

^^^^^ skit, not ski.

Why don't you needlepoint that ridiculous bromide on a pillow?

It will reassure you when people yawn during your witty banter.

Unless you count Barbara Perry (Pickles Sorrell). In that case, Peggy Lipton was #2, and Doris was #3

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2019 5:16 PM

I loved Tim Conway. I thought he was funny as hell. But then again, I watched the Carol Burnett Show when it was on in prime time.

May he R.I.P.

by Anonymousreply 18May 14, 2019 5:19 PM

He was often painful to watch on The Carol Burnett Show. Particularly when he played that boss. So self-indulgent.

Never enjoyed his sense of humor. Yes

by Anonymousreply 21May 14, 2019 5:55 PM

Tin was the best part of The Carol Burnett show.

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2019 5:55 PM

R22, really? Uhhh...OK.

by Anonymousreply 23May 14, 2019 5:56 PM

[quote]I thought he was good in character sometimes - like the nerdy boss to Carol's ditzy secretary.

The only thing more excruciating to watch than the Boss Tudball sketches was Conway as the "old man," slowly shuffling across the stage. And it grew even less funny the more he did it.

As someone already pointed out, he was an utterly predictable mediocrity.

by Anonymousreply 24May 14, 2019 6:10 PM

Countdown to Carol Burnett talking about what a comic genius he was.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2019 6:12 PM

Another dead celeb whom I had to google for what he'd done.

The obit really needs someone well-known, aged 40-50 to die now to be intriguing.

RIP Tim Conway; you shall be missed by many eldergays here.

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2019 6:19 PM

Let's just turn this into a Momma's Family thread. How many Raytown businesses can you name. The Bigger Jigger.

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2019 6:21 PM

NOT FUNNY on the Carol Burnett Show (Carol Burnette Show?)

by Anonymousreply 28May 14, 2019 7:12 PM

Yes, the old man in the park was even more unfunny than the boss. And the others (particularly Korman) looked like they were pissing themselves to keep from laughing out loud. So fucking unprofessional.

by Anonymousreply 29May 14, 2019 7:22 PM

Tim wasn't funny because he never uttered," fuck," on screen. We think using," Fuck," makes a person funny.

by Anonymousreply 30May 14, 2019 7:26 PM

Tim could have turned the air blue with "fucks" and he still would have been about as funny as a cholera epidemic.

by Anonymousreply 31May 14, 2019 7:27 PM

EVERYBODY thought the Dorf on Golf was hilarious!

by Anonymousreply 32May 14, 2019 7:40 PM

R30

Yep, it worked wonders for Charles Rocket.

by Anonymousreply 33May 14, 2019 7:40 PM

I would have sucked his dick if he gave me access to Harvey!

by Anonymousreply 34May 14, 2019 7:42 PM

I knew the joyless brigade here would be dumping on him but I had a good time with Tim Conway's humor on "The Carol Burnett Show", particularly as Mickey Hart yelling at Mother Harper in the Family skits. I enjoyed his timing as Mr. Tudball particularly because I lacked the patience for the oldest man, but he was sometimes funny in "As The Stomach Turns". My favorite was his work as the Mickey Rooney role in the 'National Velvet' take off, 'Natural Velvet'.

by Anonymousreply 35May 14, 2019 7:43 PM

Going back to even when I was a kid, he never came across as being all that funny. It's interesting to see that there are more than a few people who feel the same way.

by Anonymousreply 36May 14, 2019 7:56 PM

And you're entitled to your opinion, R35. But so are those of us who didn't care for his style of comedy. Having an opinion that differs from yours hardly makes us "joyless."

by Anonymousreply 37May 14, 2019 7:57 PM

Back when the Carol Burnett show was on the air, Harvey Korman may have cracked up on air, but allegedly he wasn't happy with Conway's ad libbing because Korman prided himself on being a top straight man. He did not like breaking character because of Conway. That was supposedly why he left the show and Dick Van Dyke replaced him.

by Anonymousreply 38May 14, 2019 8:07 PM

R35 why does calling out an indulgent tiresome actor make us joyless?

by Anonymousreply 39May 14, 2019 8:21 PM

When I was a kid and watched the Carol Burnett show, he was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 40May 14, 2019 8:31 PM

I was more annoyed at the others for cracking up so much over Tim Conway. Why couldn't they behave themselves? Were they drunk? or they actually act more like they're stoned on MJ. It was ridiculous and inexplicable. I don't think Vicki Lawrence had that problem as much, but the others - my god. Where was their professionalism?

Anyway, I didn't think Conway was all that bad (though not so funny as to crack them up all the time.) The whole show was full of over-the-top performances. But then, I'm a Benny Hill fan so what do I know. (I do draw the line at the Three Stooges)

by Anonymousreply 41May 14, 2019 8:37 PM

The Stooges early comedies, like the one where they're doctors, are great. Benny Hill is just tired predictable crap.

by Anonymousreply 42May 14, 2019 8:54 PM

Benny Hill did this one poignant song I'll never forget, about a young man dying: "Please Let Me Go Round Again"

Really beautiful. I wonder if he wrote it?

by Anonymousreply 43May 14, 2019 9:48 PM

I think Debbie Boone wrote it.

by Anonymousreply 44May 14, 2019 9:55 PM

R42 Benny Hill became tired and predictable because the BBC decided to air his shows repeatedly when they were only suppose to be shown three times a year. Then the syndication deal made it even worse.

Yes R43 he wrote all the original songs on his shows including that one. I first saw it like many North Americans, in the late 80s as a kid. Even then it had an effect on me and is still one of my favorites today.

by Anonymousreply 45May 14, 2019 10:19 PM

I thought Beny Hill was awful the first time I saw him. It wasn't endless reruns. It was the idea that even the first time I saw him seemed like a rerun.

by Anonymousreply 46May 14, 2019 11:19 PM

[quote]Tin was the best part of The Carol Burnett show.

I preferred copper myself.

by Anonymousreply 47May 14, 2019 11:56 PM

[quote]I don't think Vicki Lawrence had that problem as much

Vicki was really disciplined. She almost always knew how to keep it together when everyone else cracked up.

by Anonymousreply 48May 15, 2019 12:00 AM

The "cracking up" on the Carol Burnett show was scripted in from rehearsal.

That is why, Jimmy Fallon notwithstanding, actors on SNL were forbidden to get the giggles: Because it was considered unprofessional and "too Carol Burnett."

by Anonymousreply 49May 15, 2019 12:04 AM

Let's predict the next three celeb deaths

My pick is Johnny Depp, John Astin, and Marisa Tomei.

by Anonymousreply 50May 15, 2019 12:09 AM

I liked him when he did the voice overs on Nite at Nite back in the 90's. That's about it.

by Anonymousreply 51May 15, 2019 12:12 AM

Just this past Sunday, this local hack sports show host said that Tim Conway was dead. I let him know that, although he had dementia, Tim Conway was still then-alive.

by Anonymousreply 52May 15, 2019 12:20 AM

R52, thank you for your service.

by Anonymousreply 53May 15, 2019 12:25 AM

R49 is right, the "I'm laughing so hard I can't carry on" bit is a tried and true piece of show business shtick. Siegfried of Siegfried and Roy used to "break down" in "helpless laughter" twice a night and audiences fell for it every time. Like they just happened to be there the night he selected to assist him on stage the zaniest member of the audience he's ever seen.

Of course the audience who were there the night a tiger mauled Roy saw the show half the people who ever bought a ticket hoped to see.
