The Society - new Netflix show with gay storyline
by Anonymous | reply 108 | September 1, 2020 10:34 AM |
On a scale of 1 to 10, how good is the gay storyline?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 13, 2019 3:05 PM |
R1 I have just finished with the show. I'd give the gay storyline a 6/10. The gay storyline was kinda short, it only started in episode 7. The gay characters had chemistry and their scenes were really cute. It was cliched at times, especially one part of the storyline, I was like REALLY?! Ugh. Also, AGAIN we have a Netflix show where the gay couple doesn't get a sex scene, yet EVERY other straight couple did. However, unlike the other Netflix show Bonding, at least the gay couple on The Society got a bed scene, which was really sweet. Also, I like how the characters came out. It was really emotional and heartfelt. So yeah, not a perfect gay storyline by any means, but it was good. Also, out of pure superficial reasons or whatever I like the fact that one part of the gay couple was a hot jock. FINALLY! The ending was kinda open too, with hope they might end up together. No gay characters died! YAY! lol

What'a with disabled gays on TV this day.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 13, 2019 8:01 PM |
Annoying cunts populated the series. I gave up after ep. 01.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 13, 2019 8:01 PM |
R5 It gets better. Stick with it, it doesn't get good until that huge thing happens in episode 2 (or was it 3?)
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 13, 2019 8:09 PM |
R3 Can't remember, not much, if any. There are some REALLY hot guys on the show though. The jocks are stupid af but also hot af. Also, did I mention one of the jocks is gay? There might not be much nudity (as in ass shots) but there are plenty of shirtless scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 13, 2019 8:10 PM |
Sounds interesting. Though if they were going to go for a gay deaf character, should've gone with Josh Castille.
At least the actor's actually deaf here though.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 13, 2019 8:25 PM |
R8 I think the deaf guy was on the show Switched at Birth. I seem to remember the show having a minor gay character. I was actually surprised he wasn't the gay character as he pinged. Would be nice if he's gay. I want more gay characters played by gay actors.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 13, 2019 8:30 PM |
Reviews paint it as a decent YA show.
I'll out it on the list of possible watches when I am bored with free time.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 13, 2019 11:28 PM |
The gay storyline was actually really cute. I just wish they got more screen time. Hopefully they'll get more screen time next season if the show is renewed.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 14, 2019 7:37 AM |
The deaf kid's coming out scene was really well done. Please watch the video.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 14, 2019 8:49 AM |
Does anyone know if Sean Berdy (Sam) is gay? He pings, but I don't know if he's just an effeminate straight man or actually gay. It's not just because he plays a gay character either, he pinged back when he was on Switched at Birth too. Idk... I could be wrong. Maybe it's just the deaf thing throwing me off.

Jack Mulhern is so hot.

Is this a US show? Who made this show? Is it one of those shows that Netflix rebranded as their own?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 15, 2019 6:02 AM |
R16 It's a US show. I have no idea if Netflix made it or just rebranded it as their own.

Is that Bill Hader in a blonde wig?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 15, 2019 6:16 AM |
Several years ago there was another Netflix series where a plague wiped out all the adults in a Canadian community. The evil Canadian government send in the military to cordon off the town leaving the surviving young people on their own. It lasted two or three seasons and was cancelled with an unresolved cliffhanger.
This new show sounds like Netflix ripping off itself.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 15, 2019 6:22 AM |
R16 It was filmed in Massachusetts.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 15, 2019 6:50 AM |
Jack Mulhern finally got Instagram. I'm 99.9 % sure he's straight. He doesn't ping at all. But we can still drool over his posts lol. Hoping for lots of shirtless pics.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 15, 2019 7:33 AM |
I have a feeling Jack Mulhern will be a star, as in Noah Centineo fame. He's already really popular. He's hot af, young at only 21 and he has already played gay. He's a good actor too. I think this is only the start of a long and successful acting career for him.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 15, 2019 10:44 PM |
Binge watched the show from start to finish. It's amazing and quite unsettling at times without being actual horror. There is a scene of Sam describing how his sociopath brother tortued a bird that will probably give me nightmares for weeks.
Grizz is probably the un-jockiest jock ever (that hair!). But he's so adorable trying to impress Sam with his newly learned sign language skills.
Alex MacNicoll (Luke) is probably the hottest guy on the s how.
IMO the show is surprsingly complex for a teen show. I can't figure out if Elle is a master manipulator herself or really just a terrified victim of Campells's mind games. Love Ellie's progression from sad, little pushover to gifted, life saving doctor and midwife.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 19, 2019 3:42 AM |
I wonder if Luke is the real father of Becca's baby? She seemed awfully terrified of Sam asking about the identity of the father. And in the final episode Luke's friends hinted that they saved his ass more than once on the game field and off.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 19, 2019 3:46 AM |
I considered watching it but it looks very 'teen'.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 19, 2019 4:02 AM |
From episode three.
Grizz: I love you guys. I really do. But I was gonna say goodbye to all of you. After graduation, I never planned to see any of you ever again.
From episode eight:
Sam: So, have you ever noticed me before?
Grizz: Yeah, of course. That's why I stayed away.
Sam: Why?
Grizz: 'cause I was caught up in being straight.
Sam: You were very convincing.
Grizz: Not to my mom. She noticed early. [bold] I really loved tap dancing [/bold], so she signed me up for peewee football.
...
Grizz: Somewhere there is a picture of me in that tap class with a feather boa.
----
Grizz is a Datalounger!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 20, 2019 6:01 PM |
This show was well worth binge-watching. I was totally hooked after the first episode. Really hope people tune in because it really should get a Season 2. It's a lot like Lost except without all the religious crap.
The gay storyline is sweet, thoughtful and well-acted. It didn't get much screen time because it didn't really get going until Episode 7. It was scary to imagine being literally the only gay person left in the world--as Sam thought he was-- and to think about how lonely that would be. They also did a good job not making Sam's deafness into a huge deal-- it's just one part of a complex character.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 20, 2019 6:52 PM |
R28 Yeah, Grizz was always different, not just the tap dancing part. He's actually smart, unlike the other idiots he's friends with. No wonder he wanted nothing to do with them after high school, seems like they have nothing in common. Well, maybe except football.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 20, 2019 7:19 PM |
R27 They're certainly promoting the show (and the gay storyline). Look at their twitter header and bio "I need to talk about Grizz". They know the couple is popular and are using it for whatever it's worth. The fan service is strong. I'll be pissed if they cancel the show after this.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 20, 2019 8:11 PM |
Enjoyed the show and can't wait for a second season. Hopefully with more gay.
I find it stupid though that Sam kept up the stupid "I slept with my female friend" story with Grizz. Talk about unnecessary drama.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 20, 2019 9:32 PM |
R32 I don't get it either. He should have told Grizz the truth.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 20, 2019 9:52 PM |
I imagine Sam has some issues we don't know yet since Becca offered him a way out and he didn't take it even though it would have made it easier for him and Grizz. And he hasn't told his best friend, Becca, about Grizz. That friendship does have a weird dynamic. BFFS and yet Becca doesn't want to tell Sam who the real father is and Sam doesn't tell her about Grizz.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 20, 2019 9:59 PM |
R34 Yeah, I'm confused why he just won't tell her about Grizz. I'm sure she'd be happy for him. Maybe she can't tell him about the father since it's someone he knows? What if it'd Campbell?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 20, 2019 10:13 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 20, 2019 10:13 PM |
In one of the episodes Becca and Kelly go through some pictures where Becca is drunk at a party and one of the other pictures is Jason, one of the jocks, goofing off. I could see that SJW Becca being embarrassed that she hooked up with a stupid jock. Remember she made such a big deal about how silly and stupid prom is and Sam was the driving force to get her to go with him to prom.
I think the babydaddy either has a girlfriend, like Luke (who is in a relationship with Helena) or it was indeed Sam's brother Campell who creeped on her because she is his brother's BFF.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 20, 2019 10:32 PM |
The only thing that annoys me a little about the show is the shaky camera work when the actors deliver some monologue. At first it felt unsettling but later on it's just annoying.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 21, 2019 3:20 AM |
R38 I noticed that. Wonder why? To make it more gritty or realistic or whatever?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 21, 2019 5:01 AM |
Sam didn't tell Grizz because Becca was paranoid everyone would find out she slept with some random guy. He feels like it's his duty to protect her I guess. This will be good dramatic tension for Season 2 if they get renewed.
So are they in some biodome experiment on earth or really in another dimension?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 21, 2019 3:38 PM |
That shot of Sam almost closing his hands to fists while embracing Grizz when they say good bye gets me all choked up for some reason.
To be honest I was a bit disappointed that that search for finding farm land was resolved so quickly. I was kind of hoping for some epic Game of Thrones type of quest lasting for several episodes that would have made their reunion (in season two) that much sweeter.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 22, 2019 9:50 PM |
That they found the farm land so quickly suggests to me they're in some kind of social experiment. Felt a bit too convenient. The show concentrates on how young people would behave in a completely unexpected situation, and the fact that the power mysteriously stays on when they appear to be surrounded by forest, suggests someone is controlling the situation. I have no idea how this connects to the smell or to the parents not paying to get rid of it, but that feels more likely than them being in another dimension. I wonder if the configuration of the stars and planets is off because they didn't replicate it precisely enough.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 22, 2019 10:15 PM |
But there are some odd things like Harry finding a sealed condom in his mom's bathroom cabinet that makes me wonder what kind of social experiment they are in?
My initial theory is that this is some kind of modern version of the Pied Piper fable where someone with special technology or ability created a problem, offered the town his services to deal with the problem he created and, when the town's council members realized they are being scammed, refused to pay and the scammer took the children as punishment.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 22, 2019 10:27 PM |
I'm actually glad that didn't drag out too long. I didn't want to speculate if these two would be together next season.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 23, 2019 2:13 AM |
In the last scene they show that the real town has written off all the missing teens as dead.
Meanwhile, I was suprised to see the female lead of Legion playing a teenager. I mean, she's obviously young but it's still unsettling to see an adult play a teen.
Didn't someone from one of those CW shows post a picture of himself playing a 15 year old and then right beside post a picture of himself when he was actually 15?
No wonder so many teen boys take steriods and teen girls get plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 23, 2019 3:27 AM |
I thought it was somebody from one of those vampire/werewolf shows, but whatever. Same difference as we used to say.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 23, 2019 3:42 AM |
R46 I feel the same way. I didn't want it dragged out until the next season to know if they found farmland or heck if they're even still alive.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 24, 2019 9:21 PM |
Someone on Tumblr said what I've been thinking, why can't Sam just tell Grizz the truth? He can still pretend to be the father of her baby. The two are not mutually exclusive.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 24, 2019 9:22 PM |
Does Netflix have another surprise hit? Four people, I casually socialize with, mentioned the show to me without knowing I watched the show already´(not the kind of guy who shares his private viewing habits). But they were talking more about the fucked up relationship between Campell and Elle, but mentioned how great the gay plot is with Sam and Grizz (one called him Izzy for some reason) is,
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 25, 2019 8:06 AM |
R54 That's good. I wonder why Netflix hasn't renewed it yet. It got mixed reviews, but the viewers seem to like it. Also, there's a lot of buzz about the show, which is good. I hope Netflix doesn't way too long to renew it.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 25, 2019 11:32 AM |
My gut tells me it will be renewed. Only the very worst shows seem to get cancelled after one season on Netflix it seems. The reviews were decent for a YA show.
I find Grizz hot despite the horrible hairstyle. But he reminds me of Carrot Top, for some reason.

Boring show, the premise was supposed to be interesting, the plotline went places but didn't resolve any of the major plot holes, not even Cassandra's death. How long are they going to drag Cassandra's murder? Also can we talk about how sexist this show is? The women are shown to be three-dimensional and very fleshed out characters, while the men were mostly, if not all, one-dimensional. Nobody is one-dimensional character in real life. It's clear that the show is going for the SJW points or what they perceive Millennials act/think, but have no actual idea what they're doing.
I guess I would've liked it better if this was only 6-8 episodes because it felt reallyyy long
by Anonymous | reply 71 | June 23, 2019 8:57 AM |

r41 Becca was a selfish bitch, and that's worse than just being a slut. She is willing to give responsibility to a man that doesn't have anything to do with the baby, she has a choice to tell the truth but instead she is fine potentially ruining an innocent guy's life just because she's afraid that people will call her a slut?? She's a grown woman, she doesn't need other people to fix her own mess.

The ones I cared for were fleshed out. Dizzy and Sam. Then there's King of douches, Harry, and his fall from grace (falling into a deep depression). Also sociopath Campell who is over the moon finding his soulmate.

If you are thinking Dewey, I don't think it is. I think we would have gotten flashbacks and Dewey seems genuine that it is not him.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | June 23, 2019 9:12 AM |
Eh. Becca was selfish, there's no reason why she would let Sam take care of a responsibility that is not his.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | June 23, 2019 9:13 AM |
Dewey confessed in his epic incel rant at the (final?) court room scene. But he blamed Harry for putting him up to it saying stuff and Dewey being overly eager to please the alpha (that's why he confessed to Harry to receive Harry's glorious gratitude).
by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 23, 2019 9:17 AM |
Harry is one-dimensional, we didn't see in-depth character development from him. They made him an easily-manipulated stubborn rich kid and then nothing more than that.
Eh. Becca was selfish, there's no reason why she would let Sam take care of a responsibility that is not his.
Did people miss the scene where Becca offered Sam a way out and even after he fell in love with Grizz he declined the offer and promised to stay with her and their official story?
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 23, 2019 9:20 AM |
r80 yeah, I guess I'm not convinced. There wouldn't be theories online who actually killed Cassandra, if it was actually Dewey. I guess it can be overthinking or just an unsatisfactory conclusion to the plot. I didn't even know who Dewey was before that episode.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | June 23, 2019 9:23 AM |
r83 well she can make her own decisions, if she wants Sam out, she will. Her decision is the only thing that matters, she doesn't need Sam's permission because the baby is not his. That was not his responsibility, yet she still chooses to lie.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | June 23, 2019 9:25 AM |
Harry is one-dimensional, we didn't see in-depth character development from him.
I thought there was plenty of development. The alpha douche who sees his whole world crumbling down. He loses his girlfriend to some nerdy black kid, he loses his top dog status, and he can't cope being on the top anymore and he retreats in a depressed state of mind and then gets help from his former girlfriend and the big bad Campell only to see that he's being played by Campell.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 23, 2019 9:25 AM |
Not really. As I said, it reduces him into a stubborn rich kid, nothing more.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 23, 2019 9:28 AM |
r85. They are in it together. Becca would never make a decision, and take action, on her own that also involves Sam without his input.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 23, 2019 9:33 AM |
I like the series, and I hope we get a second season of it. I liked the gay storyline too. Two things that very much pissed me off though. First, Sam should have just told Gareth outright the truth about Becca's baby not being his. Gareth would have understood and kept his mouth shut. And second, the scene with that bitch who climbs into the tent with Gareth, and asks him if he's "mostly gay" or "fully gay", and Gareth responds: "I don't know how to answer that question". I was like, what the fuck man! You obviously know you are attracted to men and didn't need a bitch to get you to feel her up to know that you are gay, but later on he can't answer the simple question straight away until she literally puts his hands on her boobs?! Then he's like, "yeah l "guess" I'm fully gay".

by Anonymous | reply 90 | June 23, 2019 9:35 AM |
R90: I noticed that too. Usually if Netflix doesn't renew a series quite quickly, it 8 times out of 10 means that there won't be another season. They cancelled Chambers, and I really wanted to see a second season.

r93, I don't hate-hate The Order. It was a nice enough binge watch (like the male eye candy). Some stuff annoyed me (like the cliffhanger being ripped off by SyFy's The Magicians). Compared to The Society it is rather meh though.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | June 23, 2019 10:30 AM |
r88 Sam was not supposed to be involved. She throwed a tantrum when he just asked "Who is the father?", obviously making Sam feel bad, then throws the whole pity speech that "she didn't want people to think she's a slut for sleeping with a random dude", when that is literally what she did, own up to your actions, do not drag other people, especially your supposed "bestfriend", into your personal problems, that's fucking selfish.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | June 26, 2019 11:06 AM |
Sure, Becca was cray-cray because she was with child and all hormonal. Of course that makes her an A-Grade cunt to some. She offered Sam an out of the situation and he didn't take it even though he knew keeping up the charade complicates things with Grizz.
But then what else can be expected on a teen drama soap? Reasonable character taking actions that are perfectly reasonable and solve every problem or conflict instantly?
by Anonymous | reply 96 | June 26, 2019 11:26 AM |
But then what else can be expected on a teen drama soap? Reasonable character taking actions that are perfectly reasonable and solve every problem or conflict instantly?
That is what I've been implying, it contradicts basic logic. The solution to their problem does not even require a high IQ to resolve, yet the show drags it to the point where it makes it bigger than what it actually is. Seems like lazy writing to me and not enough creative ideas to spark real interest. Wish they would've focused more on the mystery instead and drop loads of unnecessary content. I guess I just came onto the show with high expectations, and man, that was very disappointing.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | June 26, 2019 11:45 AM |
Do people really watch soaps and drama series to watch people act all logical and reasonable? To me the fun is to watch all the lies and (unnecessary) drama blow up in the fictional characters' faces.

Yes, I just watched the first two episodes and could not believe that was the actress from Legion playing a high schooler. Was definitely weird for me as well.
