Well, he's the one that wanted to be an actor, right? It comes with the territory.

It's not because he's ugly. I'm taking over the role because I sucked off the producer. Shoulda been a team player, Mark!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 12, 2019 2:38 AM |
It's getting absurd.
It should be a new meme.
Olympic swimmer - I was cut from the Olympic team because I didn't swim fast enough.
Rocket scientist - I was let go by NASA for not being smart enough
Concert Pianist - I was fired by the symphony for not playing the piano well enough
Copy editor - I was fired by the magazine for not having good enough grammar
Brain surgeon - I was fired by the hospital for my hands not being steady enough
Proctologist - I was fired by the medical group because my fingers weren't long enough

Good luck getting work after taking the whole thing to Twitter. Hollywood now knows he's quick to raise a ruckus in social media if things don't go his way.
I'm not handsome myself and I totally get why he's pissed, and yet I totally agree with the producers since I personally totally want to see attractive people in films and on tv. Unfortunately for non-handsome guys Hollywood is all about selling beauty and complaining about it in public seems idiotic. Obviously this guy is certainly not the ugliest man out there and he most definitely should've stayed quiet about the whole thing and moved on.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 12, 2019 2:02 PM |
Let's be honest, this dude is going to get blackballed now. It's bad enough that he dared to call out the executive types for essentially fucking him over (you know they don't take that well), but now the whole entire series is tarnished by his complaining. No one even knows what this show is all about, but it will forever be tainted by these complaints and viewers will boycott as a result. Middle aged fraus (the primary TV audience) will feel like Hollywood is attacking them personally if Mark is considered ugly by their standards. That's going to leave a lot of angry actors and crew people who will blame their own unemployment in this fickle business on Mark's complaining sabotaging the show. Why else would he have posted this follow up tweet?
[Quote] I feel sad that by expressing my own bad experience with the show I was fired from, that it could interfere with the positive experience the actors & creatives that are still on the show should be having. I wish the writers, producers and cast nothing but love.
It won't matter because the damage is done and I think he realizes that deep down, hence this quote.
[Quote] I was raised by a single teenage mom. We were poor. We were homeless. We lived in the streets. She became a radical revolutionary leader. I give zero fucks what filthy rich executives at huge corporations think about me. Never have. Never will.
On the flip side, no one knew who the hell he was before all of this occurred. He was essentially a nameless actor who looked like a bunch of other people like Patrick Fuget and Brendan Fletcher competing for the same roles. That will no longer be the case. If he were smart, he'd transition into SJW Youtuber and air more grievances about white privilege and feminism while grifting middle aged fraus for cash. It will be a lot more lucrative for him in the long run and there's nothing Hollywood executives can do to stop him.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 12, 2019 6:41 PM |
R57, you're giving people a lot more credit than they deserve. In a week, no one is going to remember this flap or this actor at all and it won't mean a whit to the success or failure of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 12, 2019 6:53 PM |
That's a joke r46. How you look is a crucial part of being an actor. It's a combination of being able to act like the character, and whether you look the way they want the character to look. So much of landing a role is being the physical type they had in mind for the role.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 12, 2019 7:11 PM |

He reminds me a lot of Fletcher.
Too bad his ex's show SMILF was cancelled, he appeared twice as a priest. Maybe she would have keep bringing him on.
I don't think what he wrote was whiny or a deterrent to his career. He was being honest. The same way Dave Annabel was when he made an IG post about his disappointment of being recast on "Yellowstone".

He looks especially good in that pic above bc the beard hides his lack of jawline, and the hat the fact that he's losing his hair. He's still a decent looking guy for sure, better than average, but they probably wanted a stud for the role, it sucks but that's what he signed up for as an actor, especially on a network television show. His reaction s understandable but should have been kept private, not posted on Twitter.

I think he's kinda cute. I was watching Julianne Moore on that Andy Cohen show and she talked about how she was fired from Can You Ever Forgive Me and was replaced by Melissa McCarthy. Even someone as beautiful and talented as Julianne can get recast. That was a big wake up call to me that it happens a lot more than you'd think. I guess it goes under the umbrella of "creative differences."

Initial Rachel Dratch was to play the Jane Krakowski character on 30 Rock but NBC brass allegedly didn't think she was attractive enough. The concession was for her to recur on the show as different characters and that happened a few times, but not with the regularity it was supposed to happen.

I think Webber is not bad looking and has possibilities. I like men who are ordinary-Joe types. I wish there were fewer pretty boys and more men who looked like him on TV.
But that picture at R61! Love the dad bod, but those nasty, random tats? How many years was he in San Quentin? And then there's the chest stubble. A guy like that doesn't stand out that much in terms of looks, so he might as well leave his chest hair alone. At least he'd get the hairy-chest-loving crowd.
Then again, I grew up with both a mother and a father in a house in the suburbs, not in a car. Also, the only thing my mother was radical about was the belief that spectator pumps could be worn after Labor Day. Thus, I am on Webber's shit list without ever having met him.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 13, 2019 1:20 AM |
R58 You vastly underestimate the attention span of angry fraus, especially when they are personally insulted. By saying that Mark is not attractive enough (which I highly doubt was the case, by the way...it was probably just a creative difference, but that's not what was tweeted and the network hasn't corrected that impression, though it should if it wants to save its reputation among fraus), they are essentially saying ugly fraus are too ugly to be featured on TV and given success and that won't fly in fly over country. They are already mad at Hollywood and network TV (part of why ratings have plunged in recent years) and this type of stuff serves to further alienate them. This is bad for the long term business of broadcast to leave these types of accusations unanswered. If they want to survive as a business, they are going to have to address this. It may be true that people want to see attractive people on TV, but they also want to see ugly people who look "like them" as well (hence why Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Kevin James and Chrissy Metz work). TV executives may be shallow, but they aren't dumb and they know money comes from these fraus that they need. If this isn't addressed soon, short term, the show will flop, and long term, broadcast will be in near extinction by the end of the next decade. Mark's not wrong about network TV's self inflicted death, but he's ruining his own career in order to tell the truth and share sour grapes with his followers.

Too bad Webber's attitude makes him sound like an insolent brat. He's had a long career in Hollywood which makes this outburst totally idiotic. It makes you wonder was he drunk or on drugs while posting.

That's quite a reach. You're pretty much demanding the studio apologize the "angry fraus" for a business decision. I doubt anyone will be rallying behind Webber in this case. Guess who are the people who want all those super handsome muscle hunks on romance novel covers? You really think they'd rather see guys like Webber? It's all about selling a dream and the fraus know it perfectly well.
R78, you're pretty much saying being fat means being ugly. None of the overweight people mentioned are ugly, they're just fat. And at least with Melissa McCarthy they have absolutely wonderful screen presence. Which, BTW, could be what Webber is lacking. He decided to think it was all about his looks instead. I vaguely remember seeing him in something but I don't remember anything else about him.

[Quote] Guess who are the people who want all those super handsome muscle hunks on romance novel covers? You really think they'd rather see guys like Webber?
It's not an either or for these fraus. It's both. Unlike men, who only want to see hot, sexy women on their screens, fraus aren't quite as picky about who they consider hot and who they want to see on their TV screens. There are plenty of average looking guys who they go crazy over. Daniel Radcliffe is a prominent example. They go absolutely ape shit over him and he's only average looking. In fact, I think he's less attractive than Mark for a number of reasons (short, not as handsome, not as masculine), yet they are obsessed with him. By saying someone like Mark isn't handsome enough to play a lead role on TV, it's an insult to both the looks of the fraus and their taste in men.
Go through the replies on Mark's tweet. The vast majority of those coming to his defense and support are fraus. It's everyone else, especially those who work in show business, who are telling him to eat humble pie. That contrast matters. The actors and crew may make the show possible, but the fraus are what keep it on the air. As such, their opinions matter more, and the executives at ABC ought to realize that before it becomes a bigger problem than they can handle. They already have to deal with the blowback from Constance Wu's big mouth. They don't need this as well.
[Quote] you're pretty much saying being fat means being ugly. None of the overweight people mentioned are ugly, they're just fat.
The people I particularly mentioned also happen to be ugly, especially Rebel Wilson and Chrissy Metz. They could lose all of the weight and still be ugly. And the fact remains that all actors, regardless of their looks, look terrible when they gain a lot of weight. Compare skinny Channing Tatum or Chris Pratt to their fat selves and it's not even a contest. The DL didn't even give Pratt one second of discussion time when he was doughy and plump, but when he lost the weight and bulked up, the threads started in earnest. Fat makes you look worse, even if you aren't an ugly person naturally.
Regardless, the point is that Mark and people like him are popular not for being traditionally sexy, but because they are homely and relatable to fraus which is a turn on in its own way. If ABC is having closed door discussions saying that people are too ugly (when they aren't in Mark's case), it will turn the fraus off. It's not the catalyst for a complete exit from watching network TV, but it will definitely sour them on Colbie Smoulders' new show (she's not exactly popular with the frau) and it will leave a bad taste in their mouth that will only get worse if more stories like this leak out. As I've said from the beginning, I don't really believe they canned Mark because he was seen as too ugly (or why would they have hired him in the first place), but if that impression isn't corrected by the network, then it will not end well for them in the long run considering who their audience is.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 13, 2019 1:30 PM |
I actually think if Chrissy Metz were a normal weight, she'd be pretty. She has (underneath all the lard) a pretty face.
Rebel Wilson, OTOH, should be taken out by a can of Raid.

The movie of his that I remember best is Uncanny, which is a pretty good sci fi film.
I watched a couple of trailers for his movies and immediately saw one of Webber's problems: his voice. Webber has a high, light voice. It's not a feminine or effeminate voice, not at all. It's just a rather thin, young-sounding voice. There's no masculine command in his voice, nor is there any sexy or intimate quality. It's easy to imagine Webber's voice going all high-pitched and squeaky when he gets upset or excited. That's unattractive in anyone, but especially in a grown man.
Voice is important, especially if you're not movie-star handsome or don't have a strong virile presence on screen.

Is it high pitched like DL Favorite Alec Benjamin?

Wee Rami Malek just got cast in a crime movie with Denzel Washington, which he is going to do immediately after Bond. Given Bohem Rap could have been a PR disaster because of the Singer allegations, it's fascinating to see how adept he was in negotiating the rocks to scoop the awards pool. Diplomacy and maturity really are *everything* in Hollywood. I think the most important skill is diplomacy, even more than acting.

I don't play the numbers game--or feel sorry for actors who lose roles that way--but...
Putting things into perspective, IRL...He's SMOKING hot, BUT you could trip over BETTER-LOOKING men just walking around New York.
Hot doesn't always mean better looking in reality because there are nuances and shit. The thing is...if his character is a fucking bartender, I don't see the problem here.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | May 14, 2019 11:47 AM |
R107, he's more indie hot than Hollywood hot. He probably would've been ok in his role but the studio decided they wanted something else, and since they pay the bills they most certainly have the final say. We all know getting fired feels terrible but not many people would've even paid attention to the whole thing had he not raised hell about it himself. A male Hollywood semi-star having a tantrum about losing a role just feels so silly. A wounded male ego in action.

^I don't think Mark is bad-looking. Certainly not for the roles he usually plays. (Hint: it's not rom-com leading man.)

R116 well clearly Mark cares.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | May 15, 2019 9:31 AM |
Just from the trailer, the show looks like a giant piece of crap. Won't even last half a season. Shame that Mark didn't just shut his mouth and let failure be vindication. Now he's blackballed himself over a show that would not have been his meal ticket if he hadn't been canned.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | May 15, 2019 1:25 PM |
R118 that’s the thing. Most new shows get cancelled. Very few of them turn into steady high paying jobs for the actors. I know he’d probably love to be on a Greys Anatomy or NCIS. The actors who stayed with those shows can retire if they’re crazy with their spending. Those shows are rare though, and not all the actors on them will last the whole run.

I think Mark felt safe saying this because he's more of an indie actor. He definitely hasn't appeared in much network TV. I still don't think it was very wise, but well, it was less of a gaffe than Constance Wu's tweet.

R121 he cared enough about getting network money to do this pilot and be mad he got replaced. He probably would have gotten another pilot next spring.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | May 15, 2019 9:11 PM |
Exactly. Indie projects usually pay peanuts, but that is fine if you are in a franchise or have a series. How many actors talk about them taking theses projects for security and doing art house/indies for artistic reasons? It is known. Geez!
All this over some series that is likely to last a season or two. Does anyone think long term anymore? Goodbye for people thinking about or keeping you in mind for other projects.

R132 Cobie Smulders is not the "star" of the Avengers movies, she's a third rate SHIELD agent who barely gets any screen time. Now that the franchise is through, it's back to television for her. I think network tv in the U.S. blows. I haven't liked anything it has to offer in years. I mostly watch British tv and films where I get to see real actors like Olivia Coleman, Josh O'Conner, and Barry Keoghan. None of them would be hired for a network show.

I don' t know a single show on TV. I do work 2nd shift and don't have a dvr or any fancy online streaming- but it's all such shit. Boring people, boring situations, robotic acting. Unfunny sitcoms. Contrived reality shows with people attacking each other.
The last things I liked were Nurse Jackie, Dexter, The Sopranos, Mad Men.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | September 15, 2019 2:08 PM |
Jake Johnson and Mark Webber both have basset hound faces so I don't believe TPTB told him they were passing on him for someone more attractive. Now what TPTB find attractive is that Johnson was on the successful series THE NEW GIRL which ran seven seasons. I'm sure the hope that fans of that show will tune in to Stumptown.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | September 15, 2019 3:52 PM |
Jake Johnson is no looker but was on a hit show for eight seasons, so I understand the casting change. It probably has nothing to do with looks and more to do with chemistry between the leads, fitting the character more etc.
Either way, every time I see an ad for this dumb show I burst out laughing. It looks like Cop Rock levels of awful. I give it six episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | September 15, 2019 4:13 PM |
on't pity actors you condescending twats. It is a common tactic, pyschologically to "pity" people you fear are having a more interesting swing at the bat than you are. At least he got to be on a network pilot.. lots of people would like that shot. The gig has its ups and downs but he rewards are many for those who work at all.
Fuck off. Being an actor can be pretty fucking exciting ( I should know) Yes it has its ups and downs.. but don't pity actors ..most are having more fun than the majority of people on the planet.
Having said that, Marc should not have gone public with this. This kind of thing scares employers. Btw, it probably wasn't an issue with his looks but more with his chemistry or lake therof with leading lady So he should just man up and move on.. not a good look.

She's an Earth Mother type and so is he, a trait he got from his activist mother. I'm not mocking it, I admire that he feels strongly about social issues. I don't know he ended up with Frankie Shaw (creator/star of Showtime's SMILF). She seems like a bull in a china shop. But she hooked him up with a recurring role on SMILF. Palmer never hooked him up with a gig.

Google image search gave me the Australian race car driver of the same name, and I was thinking "Whoa! Execs thought THAT guy was too ugly for television?" The show is good (B+ good), but she’s too much of a cliché renegade anti-hero detective: rough-edged, alcoholic, gambler, deeply intuitive, with a sad past and no family.
