Which musician/band/artist deserves a movie next?

It seems to be all the rage in Hollywood now, with the success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocketman."

You just know that Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah are already talking to their agents.

"I want a movie too!!"

But whose life would ACTUALLY make a really good movie?

Sorry, it's just......I can't get past those bagged out, bugged out, hyperthyroid eyes in OP's gif. Wtf were they thinking when they cast him?

by Anonymousreply 1May 11, 2019 7:23 PM

Fleetwood Mac. Their story (aka everyone fucking one another) has everything

by Anonymousreply 2May 11, 2019 7:24 PM

Prince. Bruno Mars can play him. Same stature, good singer and dancer. I wonder if he can manage wearing heels though.

by Anonymousreply 3May 11, 2019 7:26 PM

Morrissey and The Smiths need a good movie. Bowie would be fun but I don't think there's anyone out there that actually could pull it off.

by Anonymousreply 4May 11, 2019 7:26 PM

Prince already made his own semi-autobiographical movie, with "Purple Rain."

There is a Bowie movie in the works and I believe his son has a say over the script. There is also a John and Yoko movie due out either this year or next

I can't believe that Fleetwood Mac has never had a movie made about them. Or the Beatles, either.

by Anonymousreply 7May 11, 2019 7:29 PM

The Janis Joplin movie has never gotten off the ground and I believe Amy Adams has been attached to it for a few years

by Anonymousreply 8May 11, 2019 7:30 PM

Talk of a Kurt Cobain movie as well but need approval from surviving members of Nirvana to use the music

by Anonymousreply 9May 11, 2019 7:32 PM

A George Harrison film with his son who looks just like him

by Anonymousreply 10May 11, 2019 7:33 PM

Gordon Lightfoot.

Great music and the film would have the added dramatic story of "Sundown", Cathy Smith and John Belushi.

by Anonymousreply 18May 11, 2019 7:53 PM

Amy Grant

by Anonymousreply 19May 11, 2019 7:54 PM

Patti Boyd wrote a book last year about her life with Harrison and Eric Clapton. Taylor Swift interviewed her for Vogue and wanted to play her. You can see young Patti in A Hard Days Night

by Anonymousreply 20May 11, 2019 7:56 PM

I honestly don't think that Amy Winehouse is interesting enough.

Freddie Mercury was a fascinating guy, with a lot of depth.

There aren't too many musicians or bands with that kind of story to tell.

Quite frankly, Elton John isn't all that interesting. I have no idea what Rocketman could be about, except that it's just a way to shill his music.

by Anonymousreply 21May 11, 2019 7:56 PM

I know r21, it's like if they want to use his music, use it, but in a totally different story about somebody completely different. Like Mamma Mia, or Priscilla, build a story around the music, not the musician.

by Anonymousreply 22May 11, 2019 7:58 PM

Nobody. But perhaps in 2060 or something, Bjork.

by Anonymousreply 23May 11, 2019 7:59 PM

Barbra Streisand's life would make a compelling movie. I would have it take place from childhood thru TWWW or ASIB.

I would cast Ariana Grande as Streisand.

by Anonymousreply 26May 11, 2019 8:03 PM

Yes! George Michael is another good one.

I honestly couldn't tell you a thing about GM's life, which is why we need a movie about it.

One thing is for sure, though. He had a lot of talent along with a lot of "demons."

by Anonymousreply 27May 11, 2019 8:04 PM

Jimmy Savile, Gary Glitter, Ian Watkin and Pete Townshend.

by Anonymousreply 28May 11, 2019 8:05 PM

I would call the Fleetwood Mac movie, "As Long As You Follow."

And use that as the theme of the movie.

There have been a number of Beatles related movies. Someone above mentioned Backbeat, but there’s also The Hours and Times, Nowhere Boy, Two of Us, and Birth of the Beatles. Also I Want To Hold Your Hand and Yesterday (which is coming out this summer) though those aren’t a biopics. And there have been TV movies made about both John and Yoko and Paul and Linda’s relationships.

The John and Yoko one that’s upcoming will presumably be shite.

There was a legit Blondie biopic in the planning stages, with a lot of controversy about who would play Debbie Harry. Eventually Kirsten Dunst was in the running to play her, with Harry's blessing. A screenplay was written, the title was "Heart of Glass: The Story of Blondie." It seemed seriously in the works but I can't find any news stories about it post-2007. Oh well.

I always thought The B-52's story would have made an interesting film.

Bands or musicians with a rocky road to success or hardships or public struggles are the ones that would make the most interesting biopics. Or maybe they just had weird careers. Like The Runaways film from years back (I think called 'Cherry Bomb'?) They weren't super well known but their story was so strange it made an interesting film, with Kristen Stewart as a young Joan Jett. Like... maybe a film about Throbbing Gristle would be hard to make boring, even if the general public doesn't know about them? Also maybe: The Plasmatics? There's a lot of interesting material there.

by Anonymousreply 47May 11, 2019 9:10 PM

Donny Hathaway would be interesting...quite the tearjerker though. La Lupe would be fascinating if they let it be as camp as it ought to be.

I didn't see it when it came out because I loved the band and his tragic story (and the great biography about him, 'Lexicon Angel') too much. But years later I saw it and thought it was actually quite great!

Dorothy Dandrige - glossy big film. Marilyn - the never was gender-bender - this should be darkly funny and nihilistic and just a slice of life, a few years max. David Bowie should be a tv mini-series. From the early 70s to 2000's, he went through so many personas, from his Glam-Rock days to now, it would take more than 2 hours to tell his story. Fleetwood Mac would be the same. FM's love lives were complicated, Stevie went from man-to-man.

Not necessarily.

Hidden Figures was a movie about three relatively unknown women who worked for NASA, and their story was so compelling and Oscar worthy.

Same for Freddie Mercury and Bohemian Rhapsody, although Freddie was much more famous.

Movies really should be all about the story and how it moves people, and NOT so much about selling something - like Elton John and Rocketman.

With Elton, there's no story. Only good music, which he is trying to introduce to younger viewers, so that he can make more money. However, his life story isn't interesting at all.

Even less interesting as he got older, since all he cares about now is making more money.

The Syd Barrett story would be fascinating - it has everything: genius, madness, tragedy, the psychedelic '60s, brilliant music.

Also, Keith Moon would make a compelling story. But it would take someone really special to play him. He truly was unique. A movie about him has been talked about for years but I fear as time goes on it will become irrelevant as all of us who remember him die off.

by Anonymousreply 105May 11, 2019 11:42 PM

Netflix just put out an interesting documentary about Robert Johnson, a black musician who more or less invented the blues in the 1930's and died young (he became part of the 27 Club). . His music heavily influenced Muddy Waters, BB King, The Stones, Eric Clapton, etc. He was a fledgling musician who played on the streets, disappeared for a year and returned playing music that bowled people over. They said he played Devil music or sold his soul to the devil.

Johnson was ahead of his time and unfortunately lived in a time that suppressed his artistry. The story would make a great movie with a young black male lead.

The Hendrix film with Andre Benjamin was pretty good, Andre really had down Jimi's voice and look down, but the story was kinda crap. It could have been so much better.

Please NO, not a non-actress, Taylor Swift, portraying Pattie Boyd. I'm sure there are tons of unknowns who can play Pattie. I cannot stand stunt casting and sure cannot stand TS. Besides TS looks nothing like Pattie.

Led Zeppelin, would be great. They were a truly mysterious band. They rarely gave interviews, when they did, they mostly talked about their music, not the groupie stories etc.

Oddly enough most of the Zep biographies out there are from the perspective of road managers, roadies and others who worked for them. Jimmy Page's biography was simply a photo book of him through the years. Not many knew Jimmy dated Jackie DeShannon, they lived together in the UK for awhile. Jackie said "Jimmy was very quiet, he liked to play chess."

Ezra Miller would make an interesting Page. He looks a lot like him and has great hair. British actor Tom Wisdom also looks like Page, but he's now too old to play Page as a young man.

I really want the Janis Joplin one to get made, I just have never seen an actress or singer that I think could pull it off, especially Amy Adams.

I would love to see a biopic of Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. Her original recording of Hound Dog predated the Elvie version by four years. She also wrote and recorded Ball and Chain in the early 1960s but her record company refused to release it...then in 1967 Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company released her version of it. Big Mama's record company kept the copyright to themselves so In a 1972 interview, Thornton acknowledged giving Joplin permission to record the song and receiving royalty payments from its sales. She applauded Janis' version of "Ball and Chain," saying, "That girl feels like I do." Eventually Big Mama and Janis Joplin became friends and performed together on a few shows.

Janet Jackson is too fucked up. And not in an interesting way, but in a weird way.

You couldn't do a movie about any of the Jacksons, because they're just so fucking strange.

Not only that, but they all lie, so nobody really knows the truth about what goes on, and what went on in the Jackson family. It's all hushed up.

by Anonymousreply 134May 12, 2019 12:44 AM

Guns N' Roses

There was one supposedly optioned based on the book Reckless Road a few years ago (maybe James Franco - can't remember for sure). It was unofficial though and didn't have the blessing of Axl Rose etc.. Then the original 3 reunited for the world comeback tour and nothing has been heard about the movie since.

The book is worth reading though if you're a rock fan. It's authored by a childhood friend of Slash who memorialised a lot of their early rise to fame in photo's and videos. It's more pictures than straight biography but it feels authentic because the guy was actually there rather than a journo who just researched it years later.

Dorothy Love Coats, seminal gospel artist whose strong, gruff alto blazing delivery, and magnetic, theatrical stage presence influenced later artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, The Supremes (who repurposed her composition, "You Can't Hurry God," to "You Can't Hurry Love"), Little Richard, Mavis Staples (and The Staple Singers), Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, and countless others. James Brown even stole her classic "overcome with the Spirit, go down to the floor/leave the stage, and an attendant places a robe on her as she reprises her act" move.

In her retirement she worked with Dr. King in the civil rights movement; in her latter years she even appeared in several films such as [italic]Beloved[/italic] and [italic]The Long Walk Home.[/italic]

Black gospel artists/groups of that time were fucking fascinating in general--the long road trips through a segregated America; the constant poaching of artists by secular record labels; the illicit sex (straight and gay), the infighting and random drama, etc.

When I was young, our church's Children's Choir, Young Adult Choir, Senior Choir, Male Chorus, and Chancel Choir sang just about every one of Dorothy Love Coates's songs, and those of her group, the Gospel Harmonettes.

This is my favorite DLC song, and here you can see what I call her "refined rawness":

by Anonymousreply 178May 12, 2019 3:59 AM

Madonna’s will be great but she needs to be dead or in her 80s+ before it’s attempted. She’ll control too much of the narrative and people won’t speak the truth before then.

Same with a Mariah movie. It’ll be a fluffy lifetime type shit fest if it’s done before she’s 70.

by Anonymousreply 184May 12, 2019 5:11 AM

I think a movie about the Go-Gos could be compelling. After they hit it big it was all downhill in a drug fueled soap opera, but you could still have the hopeful decades later ending.

And then there's Whitney Houston. From the Queen of Pop to drug fueled mess - seemingly getting it together and appearing at an industry event that could have kicked off her redemption and then...not so much. Drowning in a drug fueled stupor in her hotel bathtub. I smell Janelle Monae's Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 185May 12, 2019 5:12 AM

by Anonymousreply 186May 12, 2019 5:14 AM

Bobby Brown and her girlfriend Robyn would definitely be willing to spill the beans. For the right price.

They don't need Cissy's side of the story.

There’s supposedly a Bee Gees biopic in the early stages and a documentary much further along. It’s hard to imagine how a film could cover it all — from Manchester to Australia to Miami, with three (or four?) actors who are similar enough to believably be brothers but different enough to believably be Barry, Robin, and Maurice (and Andy?). There could be a great story from like 1966-1971, covering leaving Australia, their initial success, the break-up, followed by the reunion and ending with ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?’ being a hit.

Biopics about celebrities who are alive are usually god-awful, even worse than paint-by-numbers biopics about dead people.

R211, I think if it was well done, the ‘meat’ of the story would be them getting forced back together by circumstance but then — sort of — triumphing anyways. Their reunion happened as much because of financial interests (Stigwood making his company public) as because of emotional or artistic ones. On some level they drove each other crazy (particularly Robin and Barry), but they also seemed to have essentially no meaningful relationships with anyone else (besides their wives and children). There’s a quote from their mother in one biography about them, talking about how they never really had friends as children or teenagers, that “they were always sufficient in each other”. I just find that dynamic fascinating, I guess — the love and dependency and jealousy, the shifting loyalties (Maurice staying with Barry as a Bee Gee while his twin goes solo, Barry supposedly saying that he always felt the twins were conspiring against him, their father telling the press that Robin was having a mental breakdown when he left, etc)...

But I’m not a screenwriter, so who knows. It probably couldn’t really be written like that while Barry or the twins’ widows are alive.

Connie Francis....long awaited.

by Anonymousreply 265May 13, 2019 12:18 AM

There was a long line of actresses considered to play Connie Francis. Beverly D'Angelo spent some time with the role. Valerie Bertinelli and Michelle Pfeiffer were considered. Gloria Estefan was the one who expressed the most desire to play Connie and she and Connie spent years with the manuscript. Once Connie ended the idea, Dolly Parton expressed the desire to produce it. Gloria believed that she would be in contention for an Oscar. Yet, she had very little acting experience. Connie had previously stated, and then later, after the idea with Gloria ended, that she would like an unknown to play her.

I love Nicole Kidman, but she was totally wrong for Dusty Springiled!

[quote]Klaus Nomi

That could really be a compelling indie movie. His unlikely rise in the early 80's East Village club scene would be interesting enough - but the fact he was one of the first celebrities (major or minor) to succumb to AIDS adds an extra layer.

by Anonymousreply 270May 13, 2019 12:59 AM

And they could throw some cash at still kicking Joey Arias as a consultant.

by Anonymousreply 271May 13, 2019 1:02 AM

Badfinger. Although it would be unbelievably depressing.

by Anonymousreply 272May 13, 2019 1:59 AM

Tom Jones. We can hear about him stopping a dildo in his pants as well as his gay liaisons

by Anonymousreply 273May 13, 2019 2:06 AM

Aren't they making a movie about Nina Simone? There was talk that the actress playing her wasn't black enough.

by Anonymousreply 274May 13, 2019 2:07 AM

r274, the movie was released back in 2016; yes, Zoe Saldana was criticized for not being "black enough."

TAKE ME AS I AM: THE TRUE STORY OF CARLY SIMON.........CARLY SIMON played by DONNA MILLS and singing dubbed by ANN WILSON.....mother ANDREA SIMON played by JANE FONDA..... with JAMES TAYLOR played by JAKE GYLLENHAAL.........2nd husband .JIM HART played by JOHN HAMM (his fantasy gay nude love scenes will be epic).....JOANNA SIMON played by FELICITY HUFFMAN as part of a plea deal....... and the late WALTER CRONKITE played by animatronic LORNE GREENE.......LUCY SIMON played by BRIDGET FONDA........MICK JAGGER played by himself.

The Monkees

by Anonymousreply 278May 13, 2019 3:08 AM

I second Marc Bolan. Tough time starting out, meteoric rise to fame, inventing glam rock, weight gain and alcoholism, being eclipsed by friend/rival David Bowie, slimmed down come back with TV show, instant death in a car crash at age 29. He was such an overt, cocky personality, it would be a really great part for an actor.

I'd love to see a Leadbelly movie

by Anonymousreply 289May 18, 2019 3:48 PM

At least I hope it's better than that terrible Disney movie about the farting astronaut.

by Anonymousreply 290May 18, 2019 3:49 PM

Elliott Smith's death is probably too controversial and his family would never get behind anything that made them look bad ( which it would.) Which means his music would be out of bounds.

by Anonymousreply 291May 18, 2019 3:52 PM

Leonard Cohen would be interesting. Dustin Hoffman could play his later years.

Duran Duran

by Anonymousreply 296May 18, 2019 9:07 PM

Oh yes R64 Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. This is the perfect trio. Also The Stooges would be very entertaning.

R193, The Supremes, YES! In fact I've been working on adapting my books, Dreamgirl and Supreme Faith into a screenplay. Please go to my gofundme page to make this movie a reality.

BTW, did any of you catch my show at Cafe Carlyle? My reviews were Supreme!

Perhaps after the publication of her memoir, Miss Streisand's life will be made into a biopic.

by Anonymousreply 302June 8, 2019 6:27 PM

R298 Jani seemed one of the few likeable decent guys in that glammy metal scene so he’d actually be an ideal tragic protagonist. It would be kickass to hear some of their less famous songs and albums get some play on a soundtrack, like DOG EAT DOG.

Add in the gay element for cred points plus plenty of cameos & Easter eggs from the still-kicking hair-band contingent like L.A. Guns, and you have yourself a hit.

Definitely Prince. The fact that he died in an elevator and sung about it on one of his songs-- Let's Get Crazy--is proof enough.

I'd say Bowie but wasn't that Velvet Goldmine? The public wouldn't go see it but the old jazz and blues musicians all had very interesting lives. I'd love to see a film version of Jelly Roll Morton or Buddy Bolden's lives.

That pisses me off. Americans can't be authentic about fucking anything.

by Anonymousreply 308June 13, 2019 12:54 AM

EVERYBODY has been "attached" to a movie about Janis Joplin: Melissa Etheridge, Courtney Love, Pink, Nina Arianda, Reese Witherspoon, Zooey Deschanel, Renee Zellweger, Laura Theodore, Lili Taylor, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams. There's been talk of a Janis Joplin movie for decades. It's never happened, probably because it's not meant to happen. NO ONE could really do Janis Joplin justice on the screen. She was a force of nature.

by Anonymousreply 312June 13, 2019 1:30 AM

To have a movie made for release in movie theaters the artist would have to have had an iconic hit that still relevant to today's average movie goer, someone in their 20's-30's. Most of these people while they might make an interesting movie, the 20-30 crowd just wouldn't pay to see it.

I still can't believe that no one has managed to make a successful film out of the life of Hank Williams, Sr. everything is there for a great movie. And, Hank Williams isn't largely unknown, he is still a major historical figure in popular music.

by Anonymousreply 315June 13, 2019 3:08 AM

There's a great YouTube fan-webseries about the Yacht Rock scene, titled simply 'Yacht Rock'. It's hilarious and surprisingly clever in a meta way.

I would love to get friends together and give the more obscure hair metal scene the same treatment, or maybe the British invasion of hardrock & metal.

Sly Stone. Unbelievably brilliant, unjustly forgotten, brought down by his demons and cocaine, wrote great "woke" songs like Underdog and Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey. Did everything Prince did, but did it first, and did it better. Insane life -- rags to riches to rags. Outrageous style. And he's still alive. And maybe there could be a kind of happy ending for him for real.
