“Here Comes The Rain Again” by Eurythmics holds up well 36 years later

I haven’t heard this song in YEARS, then the other day I was in Target and this song came on and I actually got excited and started smiling cause I forgot it even existed and it’s even better now to me!

It has aged amazingly and the lyrics and beat and rhythm are enchanting!

Did you like this song?

IMO, it's their best song.

by Anonymousreply 1May 5, 2019 1:16 AM

Never cared for this song. I've never been able to determine what it's saying, exactly. It's like "Blowin' in the Wind": poetic-sounding fluff that doesn't add up to anything. "Falling on my head like a--" what is it? New emotion? What the fuck?

by Anonymousreply 2May 5, 2019 1:19 AM

I think this song is getting re-discovering? Someone I know from Iran who was probably not alive when this song came out is a fan.

by Anonymousreply 3May 5, 2019 1:39 AM

Great song. As are many Eurythmics’ tunes.

by Anonymousreply 4May 5, 2019 2:23 AM

This is probably their best song, arguably better than "Sweet Dreams". The video, shot in the Orkneys was very atmospheric.

by Anonymousreply 5May 5, 2019 2:34 AM

The shot of her outside at night with her light walking with nothing but space gives me anxiety.

I hate large open spaces like that where you can walk for hours and feel like you’re still nowhere.

by Anonymousreply 6May 5, 2019 2:36 AM

How do you "forget a song existed"? What a fucking moron.

by Anonymousreply 7May 5, 2019 2:39 AM

Love the Eurythmics so much -- and I believe they're due for a resurgence, a ABBA Gold + Mamma Mia type revival.

by Anonymousreply 8May 5, 2019 2:48 AM

I'll take anything Anne did over the sh*t Madonna is auto-tuning our way. Forgot OP? Are you living in a cave, or just a self prescribed bubble?

by Anonymousreply 9May 5, 2019 3:05 AM

Never was big on this one. Love is a Stranger is my favorite from that era.

by Anonymousreply 10May 5, 2019 3:35 AM

God, I'm old.

by Anonymousreply 11May 5, 2019 3:45 AM

I always loved this one. The video was played a ton on MTV and other video shows at the time.

by Anonymousreply 12May 5, 2019 4:57 AM

I listened to this song on an MP3 today and was thinking to myself...I wonder what Millenials who've never heard it and never heard of the Eurythmics would think of it if they had no idea it was "old". -- I bet you they would like it! I think it's great. It holds up.

by Anonymousreply 13May 5, 2019 7:09 AM

I like "Here Comes..." but my absolute favorite by them was "Would I Lie To You". Annie rocks it out, and the video (with Stephen Bauer) was perfection.

This is such a good song.

by Anonymousreply 15July 10, 2019 3:19 AM

It is a great song, as many of theirs are...but LOVE IS A STRANGER is my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 16July 10, 2019 3:28 AM

Eurythmics had a string of solid hits. Funny enough, the first hit is their worst. Sweet Dreams is a synth-pop repetitive piece of dreck - and their initial popularity had a lot to do with her gender bending suit and orange crew cut.

But - the rest of their collection is really quite good. Who's that Girl? Right by Your Side, I need a Man, Would I Lie to You, Missionary Man, Sexcrime, It's Alright - Baby's Coming Back, You Have Place a Chill in My Heart, 17 Again

They all stand the test of time. I feel like they don't get the respect they deserve.

by Anonymousreply 17July 10, 2019 3:29 AM

It's a great song. It almost makes up for "Sweet Dreams" still getting overplayed to the point of annoyance.

by Anonymousreply 22July 10, 2019 12:42 PM

DL's Eurythmics Stans have become more OCD than that dreadful Belinda Carlisle Stan.

by Anonymousreply 23July 10, 2019 1:03 PM

Kinda similar, but I like this song better.

I'm with you, [R2]--about the "poetic" lyrics that are just blather....also agree about "Blowin' in the Wind": high-school poetry at best. They both sound like they mean something, but...

by Anonymousreply 25July 10, 2019 2:23 PM

The Eurhythmics are one of the best bands/groups of the era. Never tacky or cheap sounding---their music has held up over time, good videos (important then) and a singer with a VOICE and CHARISMA.

by Anonymousreply 26July 10, 2019 4:22 PM

Who wrote the music, the lyrics? We're they a couple?

by Anonymousreply 27July 10, 2019 5:29 PM

We are they?

by Anonymousreply 28July 10, 2019 5:35 PM

I love the Freemasons Club mix of this song!

I wonder if they are interesting enough to get the Queen, Elton John treatment with a bio pic movie introducing their music catalog to a whole new generation?

by Anonymousreply 31July 10, 2019 5:43 PM

R31 no because they don’t have a built in fan base as large as those two do.

Look at the sales and tour records for Queen and Elton and then do that for them.

by Anonymousreply 32July 10, 2019 5:54 PM

Songs tend to hold up better if they are outside the current trend/sound of the time they are released. That way, they aren't as quickly "aged" by a connection to a specific period. Eurythmics were part of the New Wave, but stood apart from others in instrumentation and style. And let me add another vote for "Love Is A Stranger" as a top favorite, with maybe "Angel" at number two.

by Anonymousreply 33July 10, 2019 6:06 PM

I always loved Julia from 1984. Sex Crime from that soundtrack is also good. I read recently she isn’t interested in touring or doing Eurythmics music. I can’t remember exactly how she put it, but that was the upshot.

by Anonymousreply 34July 10, 2019 6:23 PM

R31 it could make for a more thoughtful, beautiful film.

by Anonymousreply 37July 10, 2019 10:53 PM

I love both Eurythmics and Shannon! Both "Sweet Dreams" and "Let the Music Play" were those songs that sounded like *nothing else* on the radio at the time when they were released - kind of like "I Feel Love", another one of those songs that made you stop doing whatever you were doing when you heard them for the very first time.

by Anonymousreply 38July 10, 2019 11:11 PM

very nice, r30, thanks

by Anonymousreply 39July 11, 2019 3:30 AM

I'm millennial but this track ranks somewhere in my favorites. For those who don't get it, I interpret it to mean unrequited love. A pensive sadness represented by the rain. Has no one had those moments, or days? I have, with literal rain walks along with fantastical rumination about what my relationship really was with certain men.

The song also emotionally implies to me that none of the fantasy will come true. We have to deal with it. We're fine. But here comes the rain again, like its a new emotion.

by Anonymousreply 40July 11, 2019 4:47 AM

I like "There Must Be an Angel Playing with My Heart," esp. this version from "Live on Parkinson."

"Here Comes The Rain Again" is the best! I bought the 12" single when I was in high school. Yes, it still sounds great today, OP.

Always thought the strings on this were really cool

by Anonymousreply 44July 11, 2019 6:09 AM

Any Associates fans on DL?

by Anonymousreply 45July 11, 2019 6:52 AM

R2, the song was written by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart and it is about the onset of depression or melancholy. The speaker feels that wave of negativity coming, so they're reaching out to a sympathetic friend or lover to ride it out with her.

by Anonymousreply 46July 11, 2019 7:27 AM

Brilliant song

by Anonymousreply 47July 11, 2019 1:43 PM

It's the same song as "Sweet Dreams" Just like Solitare was a reworking of Gloria and The Love You Save was a reworking of ABC.

[quote]Eurythmics had a string of solid hits.

Not in the USA they only had three hits, "Sweet Dreams," "Here Comes The Rain Again," and "Would I Lie To You."

The rest were usually in the low 20s or less.

by Anonymousreply 48July 11, 2019 2:09 PM

R48 breaking Top 40 makes it a hit

They had a new CD out almost every year I was in high-school & college...I bought them all.

Saw them in concert in 1989.

Tons of great songs...still hold up.

by Anonymousreply 55July 11, 2019 9:27 PM

I always found Annie Lennox weird.

by Anonymousreply 56July 14, 2019 1:59 AM

The Eurythmics ruled the '80s. As soon as the '90s came... that was it. It's too bad but at least their output was consistently of high quality.

Savage is an amazing album.

by Anonymousreply 57July 14, 2019 2:03 AM

Wow...you listen to this and you're instantly reminded of just how shitty and unsophisticated music is today in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 58July 14, 2019 2:41 AM

The Eurythmics? And a special oh dear to R26!

by Anonymousreply 59July 14, 2019 2:48 AM

Eurythmics are phenomenal. So many good songs that weren't even hits - When Tomorrow Comes, Conditioned Soul, The Last Time, Adrian. Here Comes The Rain Again is great, so haunting. Don't Ask Me Why, Love Is A Stranger, It's Alright Baby's Coming Back are fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 60July 14, 2019 2:52 AM

Eurythmics are often referred to as "The" Eurythmics.

by Anonymousreply 64July 14, 2019 12:48 PM

How did OP “forget this song existed”? There are so many songs I loved but years of radio over-saturation have killed them. Objectively, I love Here Comes the Rain Again but I don’t necessarily need to hear it again like countless other 80’s hits. I prefer their deep cuts, like When Tomorrow Comes, The Last Time, Right By Your Side, Must Be An Angel, etc.

by Anonymousreply 65July 14, 2019 1:21 PM

The Last Time was used to great effect in Outrageous Fortune.

by Anonymousreply 66July 14, 2019 7:49 PM

Great song. One of their best.
