Today I contemplate what LGBT pride means to me. I see a man I worked to become years ago when I timidly began coming out. Truthfully I’m not exactly where I thought I’d be, life has thrown some curves, but I have learned to love myself and my journey. I sit grateful for a life made possible by those who fought before me.

LGBT Pride is reminder of the way things use to be and those who fought and sacrificed for the rights I have now. It’s a reminder that equality is very much a fight today. Personally, it represents the opportunity to live my life authentically as 100% myself. When I first came out I didn’t have gay professionals to look up to. Now I am surrounded by LGBT professionals who shine as examples to me, showing me I can do and be anything I want.

On some level most LGBT have lived parts of their life hidden from the world. Most of us know how easily fear, pain, uncertainty can control our actions. Then there comes a time many have us know well, when we live bravely and unapologetically, embracing our full self. I don’t pretend to understand the struggles that many have endured, and I have empathy and the utmost respect for anyone who is not ready to come out. Everyone in their own time.

Circumstances are extreme to many, I lost my family, friends, spent years in isolation and ridicule, criticized by even those in my own community, but my trials are nothing compared to those who still live in countries that punish LGBT with imprisonment and even death. I live in a country that allows me to work, to marry, to live exactly as I am, yet there are still parts of this country that want to take away those rights. The fight continues.

I am proud to live in a society where the majority has begun embracing differences. I hope to help create an environment where those who continue to hide will feel safe and supported to come out and be their full authentic self. I hope to be a hole model for the younger generation to look up to. Pride is living authentically, no longer hiding, it’s a celebration of self, self acceptance, new discoveries, new opportunities, new growth. Pride is about loving yourself exactly as you are.

According to Tribe, a (sigh) "company that connects brands to influencers" someone with 100-500k followers can make between 600-1200 per post. Tommy has around 160K, so let's say $750 for every time he shills kombucha or a protein bar, and maybe more for bigger brands like Johnny Walker. I think it adds up.
