Congressman Steve Cohen tonight dismissed the criticism of his “chicken stunt.”
The Tennessee Democrat told Anderson Cooper tonight that the House may have no choice but to have the sergeant-at-arms bring Attorney General Bill Barr in to answer Congress’ questions.
But Cohen got a lot of attention for mocking Barr’s absence at the House Judiciary Committee hearing this week with some fried chicken.
At one point, Cooper said if they really sent the sergeant-at-arms out there, it would be handing Republicans “an incredible thing to point to as Democtatic overreach.”
“They went after you for the chicken stunt yesterday,” Cooper noted, pointing out the criticism that Cohen wasn’t taking this seriously.
Cohen defended his actions and basically told his critics to get a life:
“Anybody who had a modicum of a sense of humor or a modicum of intelligence or understanding liked it. Those that failed in those two criteria didn’t. And for those people, get a life.”
Besides Anderson maybe he meant Kimmel there.
Jimmy Kimmel mocked a Democratic congressman for eating Kentucky Fried Chicken at a committee hearing Thursday morning to ridicule Attorney General William Barr for canceling his testimony.
“Wow, what a sick burn that is,” the comedian said sarcastically Thursday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “Trump’s gonna win again with stuff like that, isn’t he?”

Any Democratic strategy must include the state legislatures in 2020. We have to replicate 2018, and we have to increase it. But if we don't secure the state legislatures and governors we are still fucked. In states where we won a governor, but didn't secure the legislature we are watching that legislature block the Democratic governors. If we want to end suppression and gerrymandering and protect our elections from cyber attacks we have to make sure we build a strong firewall.

Jerry Brown refused to release his taxes and he wasn't banned from the ballot in California.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 4, 2019 3:30 PM |
Trump wasn’t going to win California anyway, but a lot of people vote in Presidential years just to vote for the President. Then they vote one party the whole ticket down.
If people want to vote for Trump, and he’s not on the ballot, they may just stay home. It might help some of the local races.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 4, 2019 3:38 PM |
Looks like Cohen didn't have any "smoking gun" recordings after all?
Well, shit.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 4, 2019 4:04 PM |
The California bill only applies to the primary vote, not the general election. Does Trump even need to run in the primary?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 4, 2019 4:11 PM |
r24, THAT is BRILLIANT. Californians know how to fuck him up.
If he is denied general votes, and California never votes for him, NBD.
However, if he is denied being on the PRIMARY ballot, he misses out on on the CALIFORNIA REPUBLICAN DELEGATES to the REPUBLICAN convention.
That is 172 delegates Trump already lost.
BRILLIANT.

There are also multiple states that have already passed laws stating that all of their electoral votes will go to whoever wins the popular vote....I think the last tally has it at 200+ votes already and there are more states trying to push through similar laws.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 4, 2019 4:25 PM |
The ultimate Trump effect will be the laws that make sure another Trump NEVER HAPPENS.
The laws about appointing unqualified Cabinet secretaries will be near the top of the list.

Yes, R32. I wonder how Trump's pro-lifers would feel about him if they knew that the baby she was paid to abort was Trump's and Broidy only covered it up by claiming it was his kid. (allegedly).

Bill Maher ( don't even like him) had a good show and commentary last night. He started off by saying "As a country, we are so fucked" and "Good news. Trump talked to someone about Mueller. Bad news is it was Putin he talked to"... I know you can watch it for yourselves but last night it really hit me that we are in a constitutional crisis. We have a criminal, possibly traitorous, President who is an autocrat wannabe And the GOP are complicit and likely compromised for sure as Trump is and the Democrats are adrift. Maizie Hirono blasted Barr which was so needed. Kamala Harris questioned the crooked AG masterfully. Other Democrats also did well. But where did that get us? Barr brazenly ignored the subpoena. Someone on CNN I think said that the Democrats had disrespected him. Fuck that. What is to respect.
I'm sorry. I'm all over the place so I'll shut up in a minute. The Democrats have to initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump. Trump spent and hour and a half on the phone with Putin yesterday. And Trump talked to him about the "Russian hoax" . This is as bad as it gets. If not now, when? Please call your reps and even Nancy Pelosi's office and tell them our Democracy is at stake. I don't want to hear about how the people at the Dem. rallies don't care about Trump/Russia. Fucking MAKE them care. Do your jobs. Thanks. Peace out.

I wish the media would have Weld on their programs more often. He needs to get more attention. The more that he can pull off even a small amount of voters from Trump, the better. I want him to wage the nastiest campaign and just go at Trump like no one else has. He knows he's going to lose so it won't hurt him to rip into every despicable thing about Trump. To my knowledge only Lawrence O'Donnell has really featured him so far though. I wish all the mainstream media would give him more coverage. Every time there's some breaking news about Trump, they should have Weld on speed dial to comment
USA Today: California bill: President Trump won't appear on ballot unless he releases tax returns

Pelosi, once again too frightened of Trump and his Deplorables. Such a disappointment.
WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not believe President Trump can be removed through impeachment — the only way to do it, she said this week, is to defeat him in 2020 by a margin so “big” he cannot challenge the legitimacy of a Democratic victory.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 4, 2019 8:26 PM |
R29 Pelosi is still trying to act like it's normal politics. It's not. Trump is a cheater, a traitor and a menace who needs to be dealt with now.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 4, 2019 8:50 PM |
R47, what part of what she said isn't true? The Repugs in the Senate would have to vote to remove him. They will not. We are watching the impeachment investigations right now but without a conviction in the Senate, charging impeachment only helps Trump because he'll be "innocent" because the Senate said so. What don't you dolts understand about that reality?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 4, 2019 8:57 PM |
R49 Because if you don't keep shining a light on these rats, they will cheat and steal the election again. Impeachment is one way of doing it, but not the only way. The problem is not about impeachment but whether the Dems have the guts to actually use their rightful power to rein in all the abuses committed by Trump and his GOP rogues. So far, they have been doing a piss poor job of it since the rogue AG Barr started all his disinformation campaign.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 4, 2019 9:16 PM |

Mueller, bust his balls!
DoJ, FBI, CIA ... DO SOMETHING!!!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 4, 2019 9:20 PM |
It is true that without the Senate's help Trump can't be removed from the White House at all. But the Dems can use impeachment to show their lack of confidence in Trump's administration and force the Senate to go on record as well and use that against them over and over again in the 2020 election campaign when it's even more official (through, say impeachment hearings) how corrupt and criminal Trump and his associates are.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 4, 2019 9:30 PM |
What do you think all these investigations are? You have to investigate a crime before you charge a crime, even impeachment. The Democrats are doing fine. They are setting up the upcoming court fights over subpoenas, testimony, and documents by doing everything by the book so the judges will have a very easy time ruling in their favor. You are playing into Trump's hand by attacking the Dems for not being reactionary assholes like the Repugs.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 4, 2019 9:41 PM |
R52 As we know, Pelosi's lame excuse is that it would divide the country and derail bipartisan legislation... as if there is anything like bipartisanship left in this government.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 4, 2019 9:41 PM |
R54, you are just a lying troll. If you can't figure out that being found not-guilty by the Senate, which is the 100% guaranteed outcome, would be a gift for Trump and the Repugs, then you are just ignorant.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 4, 2019 9:46 PM |
R53 Those investigations are more talk than action. The Dems are being stymied by all the obstruction by the GOP controlled parts of the government. They look weak by not exercising their rightful power with the necessary determination and enforcement. The GOP will not be frightened by barking Dems.

R59 And more of the GOP senators are up for re-election 2020 than the mid-terms.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 4, 2019 9:55 PM |
And why must the win by Democrats in 2020 be big enough so that fat pig can’t challenge it? If a democratic president wins by 1 electoral vote, that’s enough. I can’t believe Pelosi would suggest such a thing.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 4, 2019 9:58 PM |
R62 Pelosi has the delusion as Hillary, thinking you can defeat a demagogue by conventional means. In retrospect, Hillary should have gone nuclear on Trump's ass!
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 4, 2019 10:03 PM |
Dems just need to continue to investigate.... it may damage Drumpf a bit more, it may lead to impeachment. At this point every side is so baked it’s not as big a risk if he’s acquitted in the Senate.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 4, 2019 10:04 PM |
What I hate about Pelosi's comment is that she implies that you can reason with Trump and the Deplorables by convincing them the Dems won fair and square through a clear majority win and they will go peacefully. This is never going to happen. Trump and the Deplorables will scream bloody murder and blame the Dems for cheating. Deep State style.
Pelosi STILL treats Trump, the GOP, and their supporters with kid gloves. And that doesn't cut it anymore when we all know how fucked up the whole thing is with Putin hacking the votes and giving the win to Trump at the 2016 election and the GOP going out of their way to keep an illegitimate, criminal president in the White House.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 4, 2019 10:33 PM |
The big take away from the Mueller Report (even in its redacted form) is that Trump cheats and he asks people to commit crimes to help him cheat. There is no way to effectively investigate an amoral unrepentant cheater who's ready to abuse the full power of the presidency. Pelosi can equivocate and delay, but at the end of the day, Trump will obstruct and obstruct until the only option left is to impeach to give the investigation enough power to plow through the obstructions. Or give up and wait for the election against a known cheater. Good luck with that.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 4, 2019 10:36 PM |
the thing is it seems the Democrats are largely banking on Trump being defeated in 2020. What happens if he isn't? Then he'll be even more outrageous, destructive and dangerous to our country. Are they just hoping at some point they'll have the House and Senate? Most of us don't want to wait until 2023 to impeach him.
Trump being impeached would be a stain on his legacy even if he gets reelected. If he's not impeached and gets reelected, that will look even crazier in history.
The vile repubs are going to be super motivated to defend their man and reelect him regardless of what the Democrats do. They should impeach him as a matter of principle and it will hurt his ego at the very least
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 4, 2019 10:38 PM |
Pelosi doesn't seem concerned at all about Putin hacking the 2020 election. Why? Does this "cooler heads will prevail" really work in this situation? Trump created a narrative where if he gets reelected it's fair and totally legit and when the other side wins Hillary and the Deep State cheated to get back at him. That's what Pelosi is up against and yet she doesn't seem to have any counter measure to establish her / the Dems' own narrative people can believe in.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 4, 2019 10:46 PM |
that's the thing. Trump will spin and twist the narrative no matter what happens. So it's pointless to worry about "how Democrats look to the public". Most people have chosen their side now. There's nothing to be afraid of except inaction because that will embolden him. Trump will bully and accuse and deflect regardless
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 4, 2019 11:08 PM |
r69, exactly. So why the fuck does Pelosi care about Trump and the Deplorables whether they accept defeat or not? Her priority should be to get the Dems message out the best and most effective way possible (and that imho is impeaching Trump in the House and let the Senate look bad by not convicting the clear criminal Trump is).not whether Trump and the Deplorables will approve, accept, and respect said message and defeat.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 4, 2019 11:45 PM |
They are going to open up an impeachment inquiry. What the hell do you think the point of the investigations they've started is? Just stop. This is a process and the Democrats are doing exactly what they should be doing right now. The next step is the contempt charges. Then the courts or, maybe, arrests. They are doing it the way they are doing it because that is what the court is going to need to find in their favor. You are acting like "I want it and I want it now!" pouty children. Let the grown ups who know that they are doing finish their jobs.

Pelosi's in the position of having to decide would she rather be sorry she impeached Trump, or would she rather be sorry she didn't impeach Trump. I think ultimately she'll decide she'd rather be sorry she impeached him, and go for it.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 5, 2019 12:38 AM |
r76. I am sorry, but that's kind of a cop-out. I get it that the Dems at the moment are not all powerful, but they should use what they can to go on record that they disapprove of Trump and his crimes. They can do that best by using the power of the House to impeach. Go on official record that they disapprove. Force the Republicans to go on record that they are ok with criminal Trump who was put in the White House by Putin.
Pelosi should not be afraid of using a so called "nuclear" option for someone like Trump. She shouldn't announce that the actual act of impeachment is useless. Put the focus on the actual hearings and investigations in the House and stop with the "impeachment is off the table" nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 5, 2019 12:49 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 5, 2019 1:24 AM |
because the longer they wait, the less likely they'll be to do it. Impeachment hearings should begin before 2020. I'm not sure the Democrats would impeach him in 2020 with the election coming up. The Democrats need to stop playing defense. I agree contempt charges are important but don't allow Barr and Trump to keep stalling for time. They will not budge and are hoping to run out the clock. Wanting the Democrats to go faster is not "being a troll" or "ignorant".

Here's the deal: We all believed Trump would lose to Hillary but due to Russian interference and the electoral college , the orange fucker became Pres. (barf)
Then we all believed the congress would provide checks and balances-they failed due mostly to the GOP House and Senate.
Then we believed in Mueller and his report failed -supposedly he didn't investigate/follow the money, didn't insist on interviewing Don jr and allowed Trump to dictate the naure of the questions he was asked and allowed to give written answers. He caved.
Then we sort of -some people- trusted Barr who wrote a 19 page memo calling Muellers investigation flawed and should never have been started and the Democrats didn't raise holy hell and refuse to even be present at hearings. The Democrats should have pulled a McConnell. but once again, we wimped out because we are decent and insist on playing fair.
Also a mistake was trusting Rosenstein. And that weasel betrayed the USA.
I'm holding on by a thread but the fucker should be impeached for calling Putin and talking for 90 minutes and especially for talking about what he calls the "Russian Hoax". Add to that the shit he pulled in Helsinki and Ms. Pelosi needs to move forward with impeachment.
Yes I know the House is investigating and perhaps Nancy is right once again and playing Trump like the fool he is and will strike with impeachment when the asshole is least likely to expect it. Otherwise, we are fucked! The s.o.b. isn't leaving office no matter what the ballot boxes show-and we have all heard him say he has the military and law enforcement behind him. This shit is getting real. and I pray Auntie Nancy knows what she's doing. But I respect Kamala and Mayor Pete and Auntie Elizabeth- and they say "impeach now".

They have no base that can win them any election without cheating, gerrymandering, hacking, and foreign interference and what they do have is shrinking by the year. Their policies are out of step with 75% of Americans. They are an amoral vacuum of corruption and greed. But, you want us to be just like them?

I see the new line of troll attacks is attack Pelosi and the Dems. Got it. It is clear.
Anyone who underestimates Pelosi is a f o o l and needs to have several seats.
This is exponentially more difficult because an entire political party has abdicated its duty and responsibilities for power and conservatism. You cannot discount this. This is a game changer and requires cooler heads to prevail. It may not be sexy and fun but it will get the job done.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | May 5, 2019 6:03 AM |

Pelosi is rolling the dice. She's trusting the fate of the nation to the American people, a good portion of which are too lazy to vote or too stupid to see through a con man because of their own idiotic prejudice. Don’t be shortsighted.
Pelosi is playing the cards she’s been dealt like an expert.
1. She also knows our craven Republican Senators wouldn’t impeach the Dotard even if he asked Putin to be his running mate.
Nancy knows the majority is really embarrassed by, and dislikes the clown; and she doesn’t want him “winning” because an impeachment charge fails in the Senate.
Dems have the House. Waaay more Senate Republican seats are in play next year than are Democratic seats.
Investigations right up to the election will reveal even more dirt and remind the public of how much they detest the Dotard.
Another “wave” will flip the Senate.
Trump probably won’t survive it. But even if he were to hold on by his fingernails - [italic] another wave will flip the Senate [/italic].
by Anonymous | reply 93 | May 5, 2019 6:43 AM |
r93. Not to split hairs, but the House impeaches, the Senate convicts. Getting rid of Trump would require both steps to happen.
It is frustrating, because in the mid-terms the Dems got the majority of the House and Pelosi is like "Well, it's nice that we have the House and we will do some investigations and hearings, but we can't rock the boat too hard and go for impeaching because that might scare off independent voters!", because those independent voters may buy the "witch hunt" narrative when we are being too harsh to Donald Trump and the Republicans by using the powers the House has too much.

How would you like Pelosi to SHOW how CONCERNED she is? Please just stop. I get it. We hate Trump. We all believe he is dangerous. We all talk about how he won't go quietly. But we are shining a spotlight on corruption. We are holding what amounts to impeachment hearings calling his administration out, every day. We are doing it by the book, because even if Trump doesn't follow or even acknowledge the law, he is still, ultimately, subject to the rule of law.
The majority of he American voters want him out, and if he gets in again it will be by corrupt means. He will not be President in 2023 if we do our job, which is to overwhelmingly vote, take the Senate and hold the House. We can then impeach him in 2021 if necessary, and he will be gone by June of 2021 at the latest. Personally I'd love to see him impeached right now. But unless we can peel off 20 senators from the Republican side it would have no meaning.
Instead, we're doing what we're supposed to do. Pelosi is going down TWO tracks. One is calling them out, holding hearings, investigating, every damned day. The Second is to make sure the American people, most of whom have never read the Mueller report, are reminded that the Democratic Party knows how to govern well, and is responsible, and recognizes the concerns of most people about the kitchen table issues affecting their lives.
It's not as emotionally satisfying, but it's the right way to go. The Republicans want us to try to impeach him right now. That is their end game. They will use it to show how the Democratic PArty are radical socialists who attempted a coup. I'm not giving them any advantage. Winning a battle and losing a war is not my style. We're angry and we have a right to be. He is a vile, despicable excuse for a man. I'd love to personally kick his ass. But if I have to play chess instead of just dragging his ass out of the WH, I will.
My reward will be that he is gone. Because I do believe we will get him out. Republican tactics never change. They spread fear, lies and division, they suppress the vote, and now they also invite foreign adversaries to interfere. We can beat them. .They are not invincible. They can be defeated. But also remember that we must flip the state legislatures, too. So as we tease out these "what if..." cenarios, lets embrace this one:" What if we win..." BEcause that is the most likely outcome.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | May 5, 2019 12:04 PM |
Please keep in mind that Russia and the Republicans who are all part of this conspiracy to hold power, are fighting on many fronts, and that includes weakening and undermining us. Exploiting our weaknesses and divisions. Getting rid of Pelosi, undermining her weakening her is part of that. Exploiting our anger to encourage us to act precipitously is part of it. We really have to be smart and disciplined and whatever we do we need a strategy to be effective. If we do decide to start impeachment hearings tomorrow, then we need a complete strategy, and we need to market it and make it part of our 2020 Elections scheme. That is exactly how the Republican operatives do things. So whatever we do we need to be smart about HOW we do it.

He doesn't dare give her a nickname. That is telling......
The House Republicans didn’t give a fuck about impeaching Clinton, until it failed in the opposing party controlled Senate (sound familiar?) - and “winning” Bill Clinton was resoundingly re-elected.
*ahem*
The impeachment process went through late 1998 through 1999. Two years after Clinton's re-election. Monica was blowing Bill in the WH in late 1996, right after re-election.
The R's lost the House in 1998, but the next president elected in 2000 was...take a wild guess.
The House and Senate both went back to the Republicans in 2001.
This "Impeachment cost the Republicans" horseshit narrative really has to stop.

Well, yeah. But the notion that the GOP was plunged into some kind of permanent minority status after Clinton's impeachment is ridiculous. The facts don't support that. Granted, they have to play dirty to win, but they've had decades of experience with that.

R133, here's an article about the corrupt head of the Department of Transportation (DOT), Mitch McConnell's wife and devotee of privatization like Betsy DeVos and other cabinet members who hold their positions in order to screw up the government and enrich themselves. I can't remember where I read it recently, but I saw an article that described how big corporations like Boeing have a lot more influence in the DOT now than before.
Having worked for both government run transit and airport systems, I know that both systems depend heavily on government funding. Airline profit margins are slim, transit systems mostly operate at a loss. To turn them over to privately run companies could spell disaster. It's one thing to privately own a limousine company because your market has money, but bus systems are heavily used by people with low income. They need government support.
Trump and his allies simply want to privatize everything so the rich can further profit at the expense of average Americans.

Please keep something in mind. There was a tradition or perhaps a certain "etiquette" to political disagreements, and certain norms of behavior we assumed about our politicians no matter how vile they were. Trump has upended all of that, he's broken rules and done and said things no one ever got away with before. Embracing and encouraging racial divisions, embracing White Nationalists, paying off porn stars and getting recorded talking about grabbing a woman "by the pussy" and of course weakening our economy with trade and tariff wars, embracing outrageous tax cuts for the wealthy. Hi
His immigration policies are a disaster, ICE are a gang of thugs, Detention centers are deplorable, locking kids in cages, lying repeatedly brazenly, changing his story from one hour to the next, and blatantly disregarding the "home work" required to have productive diplomatic meetings with allies, and trade partners, refusing to share any information or notes about private meetings with North Korea or Russia, etc.
And of course an obvious lack of curiosity, and a lack of basic competency when it comes to understanding the legislative process and government. He ignores the Constitution, ignores laws, rules and regulations with abandon. And through out all of this, the Media while reporting on his tweets, and talking about his excesses have not, IMO, placed them in their proper context. THis man is unfit, he is dangerous, and he is corrupt. He does not belong as the head of our government and the media has not covered him from that perspective.
There is no reason why the public is as ignorant as they are, and the Republican Party has been reduced to a third party status cult and Trump's base has diminished, yet the media would have us believe things are stronger than they appear. Do not let them get away with normalizing him as they have been doing. Raise hell ad insist that they do some damn reporting. Why the fuck have we not seen reports of the results of Trump actively sabotaging the ACA, and people dying because they can't afford prescriptions for insulin? We need to focus and pressure the media to do a better job.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | May 7, 2019 2:21 AM |
I suppose the proper, Presidential thing for Trump to do would be to get oral sex from interns, commit perjury, and launch military attacks to divert attention from his legal problems. 20 years ago, the Democrats were happy to normallize turning the White House into Animal House and breaking the law. Never had a President behaved like this on such a scale. Now all of the sudden Democrats claim to want etiquette and dignity in public discourse and in DC? They threw away any claims to them to save Bill Clinton's ass and don't have a leg to stand on anymore.

With the economy doing so well (he juiced it with tax cuts that are destroying our deficit/debt) why isn't the average person doing much better? We have had 10+ years of a strong economy yet most people are still barely able to move but a rung up (maybe) the ladder when at any other time we would have seen a huge shift for a lot of us. Except, we are in an endless sequel to the same movie we all know the ending to.
We are essentially running up our spending on the old credit card (deficit/debt) and things look good but are not sound unlike under the Obama economy where things were steadily moving up and our finances were on solid ground.

I agree, R243. The House has to be seen to be doing every thing in its power to exact accountability from this administration, even as it introduces bills about healthcare and infrastructure, and the environment. King Trump has issued his edict that no one in his administration will respond to ANY requests from the House. None. The House must take him to court, and no, it will not take years, or even months.
Trump believes this is like all the lawsuits he stalled in NY and Florida. It isn't. I remember studying the Watergate hearings, when Nixon tried to block Congress. Those federal courts would expedite matters and rulings would come down in a matter of weeks. because the courts regarded the business of governing as serious, and important and appreciated the urgency of making people accountable.
And Chief Justice Roberts is no friend of Trump. He will follow the Law. If Trump appeals to the Supremes, he will get a shock, because the new "swing vote" on the Court is Roberts. But the bottom line is we cannot afford 4 more years of Trump. We need him out. So we have to vote in overwhelming numbers in 2020. And we absolutely have to include the state legislatures too because they make the laws that suppress voting and gerrymandering. They also have been busy reversing every progressive initiative Democrats have enacted. We have to bury this cult mentality, and destroy this iteration of the so called Republican Party. Politics is war.

You want to have all of the witnesses in front of the committees 24/7 talking constantly about all the horrible things Trump, his family and friends have done BUT you can't let the pressure that has built right now wane. It's a tightrope she has to walk.

A 1924 law (linked in article) stipulates that the Treasury Secretary “shall furnish” such records [Trump's tax returns] to congressional committees.
Mnuchin maintained that the request served no “legitimate legislative purpose.”

by Anonymous | reply 268 | May 7, 2019 4:07 PM |
First of all "Executive Privilege " has been waived. McGahn has already testified to the Special Counsel, and to a grand jury. Trump has made public statements, etc., etc., so nice try, guys. Second, as to Mnuchin, he may legitimately feel there is "no legitimate legislative reason" for Congress to demand the Tax documents. And he might even be right. (He isn't.) But that has nothing to do with the Law. The Law say you "Shall..." Period. No justification is necessary. No reason is necessary. It's very clear, simple language. So Mnuchin ought to be looking at fines, jail and complete public humiliation. And so should the head of the IRS who will definitely fuck himself up by being on the Trump bandwagon.

I am honestly struggling with that myself—my feeling is that it’s crucial to get the unredacted Mueller report. I also feel that it’s imperative that people who ignore subpoenas are indicted/arrested. Just indicting them and finding them guilty could cause them to lose their license to practice law. I’m curious to know what others think.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's businesses lost a total of more than $1 billion from 1985 to 1994, according to the New York Times, which said it obtained printouts from Trump's official Internal Revenue Service tax transcripts.
The newspaper said Trump posted losses in excess of $250 million in both 1990 and 1991, which appeared to be more than double any other individual U.S. taxpayer, based on IRS data.
Trump lost so much money that he was able to avoid paying income taxes for eight of the 10 years, the Times said.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump, a real estate magnate who turned over the running of his businesses to his sons after his election in 2016, touted his business acumen and negotiating skills on the campaign trail.
Trump broke with a decades-old precedent by refusing to release his tax returns as a presidential candidate in 2016 or since being elected, saying he could not do so while his taxes were being audited.

R344, if you're really asking, it's because we've shifted the climate. We no longer have four seasons in the US for the most part. We have two seasons now, wet and dry. Eventually, the only climate that will grow the crops that feed the country will have shifted to the Canadian border and further north. One little problem, there is no topsoil there to grow crops because the last ice age pushed it all to the cornbelt and wheatbelt of America. But, don't worry, when the next ice age comes after we succeed in shutting down the warm water current in the North Atlantic, we'll all be dead anyway. Actually, we'll all be trying to migrate south. I hope Mexico builds a wall then.

At least six Agriculture Department economists quit on a single day in April after claiming that the administration was retaliating against them for publishing reports showing that President Trump’s tariffs have hurt farmers, according to a Politico report.
Trump tryingto hide reality:
The Economic Research Service, the USDA’s research arm, has drawn the ire of the administration and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue after publishing reports showing that farmers are being harmed by Trump’s trade wars as well as the Republican tax overhaul, current and former employees told Politico.
The reports shone a light on how Trump’s tariffs have led to a decline in farm income, which the economists noted has already fallen by 50 percent since 2013. Another report showed that Republican tax cuts only benefited the wealthiest farmers.

NYMag: Keeping Trump’s Tax Returns Secret Is an Insanely Huge Security Risk
Keeping Trump’s tax returns private is not like keeping Mitt Romney’s tax returns private. This is a man who was handed hundreds of millions of dollars, flushed it down the toilet, and was desperate to maintain his image of wealth and success. You couldn’t invent a more inviting target for a foreign intelligence service to manipulate.
There’s no public interest in discovering who is paying the mobbed-up, money-hemorrhaging failed casino operator whose sons have described him as reliant on Russian financing? Do Republicans believe Trump’s financial secrets contain no signs of serious corruption or vulnerability to leverage by a hostile power? Or would they rather not know?
he lost over 1 billion over the years
Actually, this is how real estate tycoons do business. They buy/build a building. They leverage it to the max. They drain the cash from those loans into their own accounts. The interest from those loans far exceeds the amount of rent they collect, which generate paper losses. They assume their %age share of those losses and offset any income they have for the year. Therefore, they pay little to no taxes. Any losses not used that year are carried over to future years.
Completely legal. Completely amoral.

Mnuchin refuses to release taxes due to the fact that he doesn't think they serve a legislative purpose. Since when does the Treasury Secretary get to decide what has a legislative purpose? Is that determination made by the legislature. Start holding people in contempt. Start withholding people's salaries. Start fining people. Start making them hire lawyers. Go to the lowest level of government employee who would have access and subpoena them. Stop paying for fuel for Air Force One unless travel is a national emergency. Start declaring that Trumps trips to Mira Largo have no presidential purpose. Hopefully, the demos are in the game to make life better for the common people. Start using the same dirty tactics to get results. Dirty tricks to save Health Care vs Dirty tricks to give billionaires a tax break.

President Trump asserted executive privilege on Wednesday in an effort to shield hidden portions of Robert S. Mueller III’s unredacted report and the evidence he collected from Congress.
The assertion, Mr. Trump’s first use of the secrecy powers as president, came as the House Judiciary Committee is expected to vote Wednesday morning to recommend the House of Representatives hold Attorney General William P. Barr in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena for the same material.
“This is to advise you that the president has asserted executive privilege over the entirety of the subpoenaed materials,” a Justice Department official, Stephen E. Boyd, wrote Wednesday morning, referencing not only the Mueller report but the underlying evidence that House Democrats are seeking.

Here’s how this will work on a practical level: If the full House passes the contempt resolution, Pelosi will issue the citation for Barr to be held in contempt. She’ll pass that citation along to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia or the DOJ. Either the US attorney or the Department of Justice will likely say they don’t plan to move forward with prosecuting Barr.
That would be the end of the matter, unless Democrats pass a separate resolution to authorize going to court with Barr and the Trump administration over the Mueller report, and getting the courts to decide their subpoena request and contempt citation.

The vast majority of the Mueller Report is already available and Barr was not required by law to show anything at all. Also, if the Democrats want to see an unredacted version, all they have to do is cross the street and present Congressional photo ID. It's being stored in a safe room which they are free to visit. But not one Democrat has dropped by there.

So Brian Kemp has now signed a bill that says if women travel out of state for an abortion, they can be charged with attempted murder and anyone who helps her can also be charged.
WTF has the Republican Party turned into? It's like they've been given free rein to do whatever they want, no matter how grotesque, just because Trump is their leader.
How would this even be tracked? Are they going to force a woman to have a pregnancy test if she wants to travel out of the state?? It's like The Handmaid's Tale come to life.

It's awful how Trump used federally insured money on a shady real estate scheme, requiring a bailout. Also, it's horrible how he used the White House as his personal brothel, framed the White House Travel Office on false embezzlement charges, illegally used FBI background files for opposition research, used the IRS as a political attack machine, and OK'd the sale of highly classified missile technology to China which made its nuclear weapons far more accurate.
Oh, wait. That was the Clintons.
Clilnton's support of China's aerospace and missile technology was far more treasonous than anything Trump is accused of.

Conservatives know the jig is up. The majority are not conservatives. Not even close when you look at issue by issue. It really has nothing to do with white vs brown or whatever. It is all about conservatism. Conservatism above all else even if they burn this country down in order to achieve it.
You must be conservative, male and preferably white. It isn't all that necessary (see Clarence Thomas). It isn't necessary to be Christian but it is necessary to SAY you are.

I did, however, find it amusing that the first sentence literally said that Trump had no problem with the report which is why he didn't proclaim executive privilege over it. I think I know why they are so adamant about keeping the rest of the Mueller report under black bars. Those twelve cases that Mueller farmed out could be under control of the Justice Department which means Barr is in charge of them now. If anyone knew what those were, they could check on where those cases now stand and would find out that Barr has stopped all of them.
For twelve investigations to be currently going on but not one person anywhere seems to know what they are or where they are doesn't seem likely. I think Barr shut EVERYTHING down, including the Mueller investigation itself, and they sure as hell don't want anyone to know it. Mueller would certainly know it and they are doing everything possible to keep him from talking. All of this is to cover for Barr's actions on those twelve cases. Almost everything else can be figured out by context. Where would twelve investigations be hiding that no one can find them if they were still active?
by Anonymous | reply 493 | May 9, 2019 6:13 AM |
Is Mueller still employed by the DOJ? You would think that with everything going on, he'd resign and then go ahead and answer any questions in a hearing. That's the only way to get all the answers.

R494 It was mentioned in passing on Rachel Maddow that Mueller might be free of the DOJ in a few weeks just in time to testify to the House committee.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | May 9, 2019 7:18 AM |
I can't believe this was on Fox News website:
William Barr, the attorney general of the United States, now faces a likely contempt citation for failing to comply with a congressional subpoena and for misleading Congress. This is about the Mueller investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Isn't the investigation now complete? How did the attorney general's veracity become an issue and thereby extend the life of the investigation? Here is the backstory.
When special counsel Robert Mueller completed his 448-page final report of his nearly two-year investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, the Trump campaign and its relationships to Russian agents, and the personal efforts of President Donald Trump to impede the investigation, he complied with the federal rules and delivered his report to the attorney general. Barr examined the report and decided to undertake two approaches to releasing it to Congress and to the public. JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: DID PRESIDENT TRUMP OBSTRUCT JUSTICE? The first approach was to summarize its principal conclusions and the second was to redact from public and congressional view materials that federal statutes and court rules prohibit him from making public. So, late on a Sunday afternoon in April, Barr authored a four-page summary of Mueller's conclusions, which related that Mueller and his team of FBI agents and prosecutors could not establish the existence of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russian agents for the campaign to receive something of value from the Russians. Barr offered the opinion that this conclusion exonerated Trump on the conspiracy -- what the media falsely called “collusion” -- charge. The second statement in Barr's four-page summary was that while Mueller found evidence of obstruction of justice by Trump personally, he left the decision of how to proceed with this evidence to Barr; Barr then concluded that the president would not be prosecuted. In the meantime, Barr and his team began to scrutinize in private every word in Mueller's report so as to reveal only what federal statutes and court rules permit to be revealed. While this process was going on, some folks on Mueller's team leaked to the media their displeasure with Barr's four-page letter because they felt it had sanitized the report and failed to capture the flavor, tone and gravity of the allegations it made against Trump personally. After media outlets published the story of this disenchantment, Mueller himself sent a letter to Barr essentially objecting to the same matters that some on his team had complained about to the media. While government officials often disagree with each other, this little spat over whether Barr's summary was faithful to Mueller's report became important because of the following seemingly innocuous event: When Barr was testifying before a House subcommittee about his budgetary requests for the Department of Justice in the next fiscal year, he was asked by a member of the subcommittee if he knew anything about any criticisms by members of Mueller's team about his four-page summary of Mueller's conclusions. He replied, "No, I don't."
by Anonymous | reply 496 | May 9, 2019 8:08 AM |
But of course, Barr did know because Mueller told him in his letter of the complaints his office had about the four-page letter. Did the attorney general deceive Congress? The Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee grilled the attorney general later on this, and he offered that a follow-up telephone call between himself and Mueller dissipated Mueller's written complaint. Yet, the fact that Mueller -- a seasoned government official -- wrote a letter about this knowing its near certain permanent residence in government files is telling. He made a permanent record of his complaint about Barr's sanitized letter, and Barr hid that record from Congress. At the same time that all of the above was transpiring, the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the full unredacted Mueller report from Barr, and he dropped the ball again. Instead of challenging the subpoena before a federal judge and asking her to rule on the lawfulness of compliance, Barr ignored it. This produced calls for the House to hold him in contempt; a largely symbolic gesture, yet an unpleasant one for Barr. What's going on here? It is clear that Barr's four-page letter, about which Mueller complained to Barr and some of Mueller's team complained to the media, was a foolish attempt to sanitize the Mueller report. It was misleading, disingenuous and deceptive. Also, because Barr knew that all or nearly all of the Mueller report would soon enter the public domain, it was dumb and insulting. Barr knows the DOJ is not in the business of exonerating the people it investigates. Yet he proclaimed in his letter that Trump had been exonerated. When the report revealed 127 communications between Russian agents and Trump campaign officials in a 16-month period, and the expectations of those officials of the release of Hillary Clinton's hacked emails, that is hardly an exoneration. Was Barr's testimony before Congress deceptive? In a word: Yes.
In a bit of bitter irony, the statute that the House Democrats now claim Barr violated is the same obstruction of justice statute that Mueller says the president violated -- engaging in deceptive or diversionary behavior for a corrupt purpose in order to impede a government investigation or inquiry. This is a gravely serious charge against the attorney general. Barr's prosecutors regularly prosecute defendants for doing what it now appears Barr has done. And the president last weekend added fuel to this fire by changing his mind on whether he will allow Mueller to testify publicly about his report. He now won't permit it. History teaches that these unpleasant events -- like Watergate and Whitewater -- can take on lives of their own, and can often have unintended consequences. But the lesson is always the same: It would be better for all of us if the whole truth comes out and comes out soon.

I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired, to quote the great Fannie Lou Hamer. The fact is, we keep "assembling" more and more information of crimes, and ethical lapses, et. Many of them are outrageous. And we keep saying "it won't be long..." and project that in the not too distant future all the chickens will come home to roost. "Something" or "someone" will bring us the relief and the Justice we need.
But I believe that unless we get more vocal and active, nothing much will happen. We have a role to play in all of this. Indivisible e mails their "To Do" list every month or every week. Get involved. ACLU is actively fighting Voter Suppression. Get involved. When there are hearings or important votes in your state legislature, show up. Phone, e-mail, go and bear witness.
We need to assert our presence. We have to be constantly reaching out to people in the media. We have to get on social media sites and raise hell. We can't passively wait until "something" happens. We have to make it happen. Get in their faces. Because honestly, I believe we, out here, understand Trump's game better than many politicians and media personalities. So I'm beggin' you, let's DO SOMETHING.

When I sort of predicted this a few weeks, or maybe months, ago some of y'all thought I was nuts, or a troll and I'm SO not. None of us want to think he'll still be there in 2020. But IMO, I think what really might happen is that, with an overwhelming turnout, we gain control of the Senate, hold the House and get rid of that fucker through Impeachment and Trial in 2021. I once predicted June, 2021, but I think it could be sooner. I think he could be out of office by April 2021.
I don't want them to Impeach him now and fail, because the Senate will stop everything unless 20 Republican Senators get religion and stand up for the Rule of Law. That's not happening. Right now Trump is clearly terrified and weighing options. I can see his rhetoric and his behavior getting more extreme. He might start a war, incite riots, declare an emergency and suspend the Constitution, etc. He is desperate.
He knows he cannot win in a free, fair election, and he is trying to figure out what his moves are. Personally, if I were him I'd try to make a deal and resign for "health reasons." But he won't. Instead he will try to be President for Life. So we need to start exposing his supporters, too. All those guns found in LA? Tip of the iceberg. Start going after the people who back Trump, who also feel like they're above the Law.
Keep dismantling his support network. The NRA is imploding. We need more of that to happen. We need investigations by the House on every single little fart that comes out. WE ought to also be investigating organizations that get federal funding, or contractors, etc. The corruption is so widespread we could be giving them the blues right on through election day next year.

However, I totally agree with you that he will start a war and try to delay the election.

Perhaps others have better or additional ideas for formatting, and maybe they will share.
Thanks for keeping the series active, and you have provided some excellent thread titles.

R556 Senator Burr, not AG Barr
by Anonymous | reply 558 | May 9, 2019 7:31 PM |
Right, R558.
Okay, Burr is a Rethuglican... none of them have a moral compass.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | May 9, 2019 7:33 PM |
Whatever Burr's motivation, he's doing the right thing with the Trump Junior subpoena. Burr is not seeking re-election, so there is little McConnell can do to punish him.

This is unforgivable to Boston Red Sox fans.
Is Sarah Huckabee Sanders responsible?

Never believe any Rethug is ever doing anything because it's the "right" thing to do. There is always an ulterior motive and its always one that actually screws over the rest of the country.

by Anonymous | reply 577 | May 9, 2019 11:36 PM |

Politico: Burr holds firm despite GOP anger over Don Jr. subpoena
by Anonymous | reply 581 | May 9, 2019 11:44 PM |
No, new threads often get started anywhere from the 70s to 90s, it seems whenever OP has the time. This isn't any earlier than the majority of the other ones.

by Anonymous | reply 587 | May 9, 2019 11:54 PM |
R587 Yeah, I didn't get the gist of the article. Skimmed most of it, but it was just talking about the past, and her physically moving homes. Puff piece.
by Anonymous | reply 588 | May 9, 2019 11:56 PM |
However, I would like to say that John McCain was the last Republican for which I held respect. That's gone for good, though I'd like to see a crop of ethical Republicans prove me wrong.
