30th Anniversary of "Results" album by Liza Minnelli, produced by Pet Shop Boys

"Results" is the ninth studio album by Liza Minnelli released on September 12, 1989, produced by Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn. The album was a success in the United Kingdom, where it reached number 6 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Gold by BPI (promoted by the lead single, "Losing My Mind", which reached number 6 on the UK Singles Chart). Features the singles: "Losing My Mind", "Don't Drop Bombs", "So Sorry, I Said", "Love Pains".

Liza looked her best during this period imo.

What a great album. The reason why it worked so well is that somehow they managed to keep her histrionic tendencies in check, and make her realize that, sometimes, less is more, as they say.

by Anonymousreply 1May 2, 2019 7:06 PM

I love Liza's version of Rent on that album.

My mum did not realise "Losing My Mind" was from Follies until the other day. She thought it was an original song of Liza's.

by Anonymousreply 3May 2, 2019 7:08 PM

R3 I thought the same for a while lol. Liza really made it her own.

by Anonymousreply 4May 2, 2019 7:09 PM

I really wish the album performed better in the U.S.

The remastered 2017-2018 PSB catalog is a revelation. I was just thinking the other day a remaster of Results would be worth it.

by Anonymousreply 6May 2, 2019 7:13 PM

Every gay man I knew bought this album when it came out.

by Anonymousreply 7May 2, 2019 7:14 PM

R6 Results was re-released in 2017... not sure if it was remastered though.

RuPaul says this is one of his favorite albums and he still listens to it frequently. I don't think it's about his loving Liza so much as his loving Liza and The Pet Shop Boys and thinking they made a perfect album together. I remember thinking I'd loving it but not being able to get into it. Maybe I'd feel differently about it today. I wish PSB had been able to make their collaborative album with Donna Summer they wanted to. Unfortunately her people turned them down.

by Anonymousreply 10May 2, 2019 7:16 PM

Thanks for that! Liza would have killed "I Want a Dog". Does she do it?

We just never really 'got' Liza.

Our mother once said that if Liza hadn't been Judy Garland's daughter she would be singing in cocktail lounges.......

by Anonymousreply 12May 2, 2019 7:19 PM

They did a part of Dusty Springfield's "Reputation" album shortly after this one, in 1990. And, then, they gave us this brilliant moment with Boy George.

The Crying Game proved all Boy had to do was to record good music that sounded like Culture Club, and there was still a place for him on the charts. It's the only time he'd recorded a good song produced to sound like Culture Club he'd recorded in years. But his solo career ultimately fizzled, despite recording some strikingly good albums in his late career. I miss him, he belongs on tv somewhere, such an interesting personality.

One of the most underrated albums of all time! With "Losing My Mind" they had turned Sondheim music into something not only listenable but enjoyable as well.

by Anonymousreply 22May 2, 2019 8:59 PM

Bitch stole my sound!

by Anonymousreply 23May 2, 2019 9:04 PM

Boy George sounded great on The Crying Game.

R14 He is on TV in Australia, one of the judges for their version of The Voice.

by Anonymousreply 24May 2, 2019 9:05 PM

Great album!

by Anonymousreply 25May 2, 2019 9:06 PM

I don't know if its true, but I always feel the PSB worked efficiently. I am impressed with how much they produced with all the music cuts that finally turn up from so many things that were never on albums. And one album after another for a good long time there. Their music seems to have the exactly correct level of production, neither over or under-produced. Melodies are good, there's humor, they tried out many different styles but with a fil conducteur, it all dates pretty well.

by Anonymousreply 26May 2, 2019 9:17 PM

It wash from the period when I trashformed myshelf into a shuper hep rock shtar!

by Anonymousreply 27May 2, 2019 9:21 PM

Oddly, I never bought it. I'll check it out. I must say I couldn't stand the asymmetrical haircut.

by Anonymousreply 28May 2, 2019 9:27 PM

MY GOD--I can't believe it's been 30 years! I was in college when this came out and it was a time when a few people were doing pop variations on Sondheim songs.

by Anonymousreply 29May 2, 2019 9:29 PM

Actually, I may even prefer the album cuts to the singles. That's how strong the album is - no filler.

by Anonymousreply 30May 2, 2019 9:31 PM

don't drop bombs doesn't get to the hook fast enough - but overall this album sucks - there's a reason that during her long career she's never had anything resembling a hit song and it's because she sings just like her mother and never developed her own schtick. One would think after watching her mother destroy herself with addiction she would have avoided it herself.

by Anonymousreply 31May 2, 2019 9:47 PM

Be Besht!

by Anonymousreply 32May 3, 2019 12:48 AM

Love this album. "Tonight is Forever" is a high point.

by Anonymousreply 33May 3, 2019 1:43 AM

"If There Was Love" is one of my favorites. The spoken part bridge is her reciting Sonnet 94 by William Shakespeare:

by Anonymousreply 34May 3, 2019 1:46 AM

The Album only peaked at #128 on the Billboard charts?

Only #128???

In 1989, Madonna with Like a Prayer and Paula Abdul with Forever Your Girl dominated the pop world, I'm not saying Liza should have sold anywhere near those two albums but

128???

True r35 but Results really has stood the test of time. It was never a blockbuster, but for many gay men in 1989, it was just as present in our Sony Walkman as Like a Prayer or Forever Your Girl or Rhythm Nation 1814.

In many ways, for me, Results was my coming out album. I knew other boys in my class would never listen to this, so it became a special album for me. When it came out, I knew I had to have it.

The PSB production is outstanding. There are the expected moments of camp but overall, Results is quite a sophisticated, elegant pop album. "Rent" and "Tonight is Forever" are truly outstanding, showing Liza at her best.

Results has been reissued twice. Once in the mid-'00s in a DVD/CD casebook. And then as previously stated, by Cherry Pop a few years ago.

Weird to think that Gene Simmons was Liza's manager at the time!

by Anonymousreply 37May 3, 2019 2:06 AM

Judy Garland did not have many hit album until "Judy at Carnegie Hall." That live album was a hit before it was released because disk jockeys were given advance notice in the Summer of 1961. Once they started to play songs from that album, the record company released the 2-lps in a plain black box. It was the best selling album in the United States for the next six months.

by Anonymousreply 38May 3, 2019 2:06 AM

1989-1991 was one of my favorite periods when it comes to pop music. So many iconic pop albums released during that time, this being one of them and I'm not even a particular Liza fan nor do I own any physical copies of her other recordings.

by Anonymousreply 39May 3, 2019 2:08 AM

PSB and Bronski Beat were the tops

by Anonymousreply 40May 3, 2019 2:12 AM

It's too bad Madonna and PSB never worked together.

They did!

Madonna is reportedly a fan.

Contrary to what was said above, Liza never sang like her mother. She attempts to sing like her mother and that is the problem. Nobody has ever equalled Judy Garland.

by Anonymousreply 43May 3, 2019 7:58 AM

Ooh, I love that album. Especially the shingles.

by Anonymousreply 44May 3, 2019 8:10 AM

I couldn't get into it at all. I think of Liza as a character.

by Anonymousreply 45May 3, 2019 10:37 AM

I still love that album too.

I saw the PSB in concert a year or so ago and I was surprised by just how amazing a show they do. Great sound.

[quote]I wish PSB had been able to make their collaborative album with Donna Summer they wanted to. Unfortunately her people turned them down.

[quote]I saw the PSB in concert a year or so ago and I was surprised by just how amazing a show they do. Great sound.

True, but unfortunately the live album that just came out does not capture any of that - the sound is flat and there's no energy at all.

Count me as a Results lover.

by Anonymousreply 52May 3, 2019 3:47 PM

The "Love Pains" chorus is kinda odd though. You can barely hear Liza over the backup singers.

I listened to a couple of tracks and remember saying "WTF is this shit"? He was all over it. I was more into Madonna and Sheena Easton and couldn't give a fuck about a lousy album by some old druggy bitch.

I tried to get my bf into this brilliant album back in '89. He was 17 years old and did NOT want anything to do with what he called "a fucking 'Liza' album". He listened to a couple of tracks and I remember him saying "WTF is this shit"? He was not at all into it. He was more into that hag Madonna and shrill Sheena Easton and couldn't give a fuck about a well composed album by some old showgirl. I dumped his ass.

Why?!? She (or “her people”) couldn’t pick material to save her life.

by Anonymousreply 69May 4, 2019 3:28 PM

i guess that's why Donna Summer's 1989 album was a hit seller and Liza's was not?

by Anonymousreply 70May 4, 2019 3:29 PM

Donna's 1989 album was ok, but she was a fool to turn down the PSB. They were red-hot at the time and had just had a huge international hit with "What Have I Done To Deserve This" with the fabulous Dusty Springfield (RIP).

R70 she had her final tip 10 hit but the album itself peaked at #53 on the Billboard charts and sold a measly 255,000 copies in the US , over 500,000 worldwide in the last 30 years

Compare that to the 15 million Worldwide Madonna sold with her 1989 album Like a Prayer or the 12-13 million worldwide sales for Paula Abdul's Forever Your Girl or Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation of that period

by Anonymousreply 85May 5, 2019 9:21 PM

R85 compare that with Liza Minnelli Results! LMAO!

by Anonymousreply 86May 5, 2019 11:26 PM

Liza looked damn good for 43. I don't blame her. She probably was scared to death at that point of being shuttled into the Frank Sinatra-type demographic after being dragged along with two septuagenarians on the Ultimate Event Tour.

by Anonymousreply 87May 5, 2019 11:31 PM

This album from Liza of all people, who had NEVER made good pop music, came from out of the blue, and it is perfectly put together for her, for PSB, and for the moment. Who cares that it wasn't a hit (other than Liza). It's a very fine production, and I'm sure Liza is happy to have it in her discography.

by Anonymousreply 88May 5, 2019 11:42 PM

what do Donna Summer and Liza Minnelli have to do with one another?

by Anonymousreply 89May 5, 2019 11:42 PM

R89, not a damned thing!

by Anonymousreply 90May 5, 2019 11:44 PM

To be fair, Donna's record label initially wasn't even going to release the album in the states. Radio stations got their hands on TTIKIFR as an import and started playing it, where it generated huge buzz. The imported single started selling like hot cakes when her label decided to release it and the album. The follow up single really got no promotion, and I don't think Summer even filmed a video for it.

Had the label done a traditional release, the album could have sold better, and This Time I know it's for real might have been another number one for her. Definitely would have gone top 5.

by Anonymousreply 91May 5, 2019 11:52 PM

Loves about to change had a video

by Anonymousreply 92May 6, 2019 12:17 AM

R91 is a perfect example of people in the Trump era: Don't know something? Just keep talking as if you do.

Yes, Summer filmed a video for the next single. And US stations did not start playing the import, forcing the label to release it. Summer was ending her Geffen contract, Geffen didn't want the new album, so Atlantic Records came to the rescue, feeling they could have a hit with it stateside. And so several months after it's UK release, it then was released in the states via Atlantic Records.

by Anonymousreply 93May 6, 2019 1:57 AM
