I'm three episodes into the first season and I think I have to hang it up. I'm mystified at how much critical acclaim this show has earned. It's so pulpy and over the top. The writing frequently makes me cringe and none of the main characters feel remotely believable, even if this is supposed to be some heightened black comedy. It feels very freshman screenwriting class'ish.
God, Killing Eve is terrible

Can’t stand it. Can’t stand anything by that Brit cunt. Phoebe Asshole Whatevr. Every sentence of dialogue is dripping with bitch and snotty sarcasm in the place of wit. Now she’s going to destroy the next Bond movie.

I know. And yet everyone on twitter seems to be claiming it's great because "SLAY, KWEEN!"
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 30, 2019 3:46 AM |
It’s a horrible show. It feels like the it was written for Sandra O and that story came secondary
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 30, 2019 3:47 AM |
At least "slay" represents what it is supposed to represent in this context i.e. killing someone literally.
It's fine. However, whoever they hired to write the second season needs to be punched in the face.

Isn't she from the lowest common denominator hit, the walking dead a.k.a. "TV food for fucktards who breed too much"?

I've just finished binge-watching the first season. The best, most compelling series I've seen since Le Bureau des Légendes. Clever, extremely well-written, consummate acting. Jodi Comer is superb as Villanelle/Oksana, deserving of awards and accolades far more than the lacklustre Sandra Oh. Fiona Shaw, Kim Bodnia brilliantly bring their characters to life. The best of British when the Brits put their mind to it.

I like the show overall, but situations are so camp and over the top it's really hard to suspend disbelief. Agents who can't manage guns is just one of the many inaccuracies. Could have just written the story with regular people who get involved with criminals, it would've made more sense.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 30, 2019 4:21 AM |
I gave up halfway first episode of season, sorry series, one.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 30, 2019 4:26 AM |
The assassin looks like she has some sort of developmental disorder. There's something wrong with arrangement of her face.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 30, 2019 4:30 AM |
Wow, bad taste is running rampant on here and not just in the gay BBQ thread. Sorry but it was one of the best series on Tv in 2018. Haven’t seen season 2 yet but your taste is maybe more for the Big Bang Set of garbage.

Something wrong with your brai.mn R10. Too much meth? Her face is fine.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 30, 2019 4:31 AM |
That Phoebe Waller Bridge woman who writes it is so overrated. I watched like five minutes of Fleabag and turned it off.

I binged up to S1E07. By episode 3, I wondered if I should continue. The premise is interesting. There are good actors. It's just very campy, over-the-top and stupid. I don't buy Jodie as an assassin. Has nothing to do with her "looks" which are pretty basic anyway. Eve in her position is not believable. And sorry but as good an actress as Sandra Oh is, I find her terrible as Eve. The older British actress is very good in it but the 2 leads are miscast and I don't buy the pull between them or the dynamics. As such, it's either a bore or so campy that I roll my eyes. Sandra Oh has been great in several roles but she didn't deserve nominations let alone a win.
That scene where she tries on the dress,. I was laughing so hard. If you want to see a good show with a killer and the detective then watch The Fall. Jamie isn't even a great actor and it's loads better than Killing Eve plus Gillian's British accent isn't bad.

I find Sandra Oh overrated.

Jodie Comer is overrated too.

I enjoyed season 1
Season 2, not so much

I hear the Screenwriting 101 complaints. In FLEABAG which is quite funny none the less you can hear the gears crunching. At the end of the first episode when she visited her dad and had a breakdown about being a bad feminist and all insecure and shit it was so predictable I couldn't take it. And a tall woman who looks like a model complaining about her pretty anorexic sister is too cutesy for words.

I loved Killing Eve- I took it for what it was- campy fun. But I think Sandra was strangely accoladed for this- she's quite unlikeable. Jodie should have gotten nominated instead. This second season is very meh- they made Sandra's character unbearable now. No wonder her husband is wandering.
I couldn't get through the 2nd episode of Fleabag though.

HOW DARE YOU SANDRA OH IS GOD

Just out of curiosity -- those of you who genuinely enjoy this show (and not as a guilty pleasure ), what are some of your other favorite programs from the past 5 or 6 years?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 1, 2019 1:47 AM |
Fleabag is godawful too. Guess she’s what passes for talent in Europe these days.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 1, 2019 2:52 AM |
Could not get through the first episode.

A friend recommended this show to me, I guess because I'm a lesbian.
The first season was ok, nothing special but my friend RAVED about it. The second season is a fucking mess. I have zero interest in watching further. Neither character is appealing. They are both emotionally void and annoying. The biggest annoyance is Eve's husband. All he can do is keep repeating how much he loves her.
From a lesbian perspective, I find nothing sexy about a bitch who kills for money. I find nothing sexy about another bitch who is obsessed with the other one because she kills for money.
And Jodi Cormer won for Best Actress? Wow.

I haven't watched Killing Eve, but I am part of the gang that loved Fleabag. Based on that Phoebe is a brilliant writer to me.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 28, 2019 9:01 PM |
You are dead to me OP.
First time I ever liked Sandra Oh. I walked away LOVING her.
Best series I have seen since The Comeback, The Sopranos, SFU, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad... Wow.
(And I am a new fan of Animal Kingdom- just binged that- it will probably only last another 1-2 seasons, but that is a FUN watch!)
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 28, 2019 9:02 PM |
Villanelle is a terrific character and Comer goes for it.
Eve, not so much (though I like, if not love, Sandra Oh).
First season is so much better than season #2, but it's still miles better than lots of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 28, 2019 9:02 PM |
OP, it sounds like you should go back to TV shows more your speed.

He's probably into the senior citizen stuff like NCIS / CSI / Law & Order etc., and has a word-puzzle "game" on his phone, R28.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 28, 2019 9:09 PM |
R28- You are DEAD to me! I love Killing Eve and ALL THE HOUSEWIVES shows!!! even JERSEY!
I am writing everyone outta my will!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 28, 2019 9:23 PM |
Does this turn into a lesbian love saga? Because if not, I don’t see the point in streaming this.
Love Fleabag, btw.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 28, 2019 9:37 PM |
It's awful. And I agree with the poster who said Comer looks likes she developmentally askew. Oh also looks like she has a touch of the Roky Dennis disease. It's a really unpleasant watch and not at all believable.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 28, 2019 10:44 PM |
Gillian Anderson IS British, R14.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 29, 2019 2:17 AM |
R18 and R19 have made me wonder whether Phoebe W-B has some dysmorphic problem, that makes her not see that SHE looks anorexic in Fleabag (whereas her sister looks fine), and that Sandra Oh, whatever her other qualities, is very much not a beauty. The script talks about her beauty several times, but she's got butterface AND no figure.
(Not shouting, just can't master italics on this board.)

R36 = Sandra Oh.
I've been here for many years. I've tried following DL's instructions for caps and bold several times but with very mixed results. It's the only board where I have that trouble.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 30, 2019 1:35 PM |
I decided to try it out and figured out in ten minutes why I didn’t like this - the MI5 agent should have been Comer as a mousy femme, while the assassin should have been Sandra Oh as a butch dyke.

GREAT show.
That is all.

LOVE Fleabag. It's not perfect, but it's very astute and witty, even when overcooked.
I enjoyed the first season of Killing Eve, although it had many many problems. But I couldn't get past the first episode of season 2. They cranked up the cheese to 11.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 9, 2019 8:58 PM |
I checked out after the first episode.

R34, omg kindred spirit - just watched Fleabag with my partner (who tells me I’m not good rating female attractiveness and finds her hideous). I don’t think PWB is hideous, but she’s definitely a bit of an ugly girl desperate for validation a la Lens Dunham. (Hence the Hot Priest plot line).
Okay looking super rich girls have inflated egos (goop) and are hit hard when they go into Hollywood/BBC and are told they’re the funny girl.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 9, 2019 10:13 PM |
R42 It’s an interesting point, but I actually had a different take: there are some people who were very cute as kids but ended up very average looking as adults but still act and are perceived as attractive due to the confidence that was instilled in them during childhood. On the other hand, there are some people who are extremely attractive objectively speaking but it took them some time to grow into their looks, whereas as children they were teased or even bullied for being too tall/short/fat/having too big eyes/lips etc. so they still have hangups about their looks.
