It wasn't from a lack of being the Hollywood "IT" girl or being offered plenty of roles after Clueless!
Why did Alicia Silverstone's career go straight down the shitter?
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 2, 2020 11:11 PM |
As if!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 29, 2019 3:25 AM |
Batgirl
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 29, 2019 3:25 AM |
She got fat. And vegan.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 29, 2019 3:28 AM |
She gained a lot of weight.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 29, 2019 3:29 AM |
I don't think she had much range. Could you see her as a serious actor?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 29, 2019 3:31 AM |
She is/was very one-note.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 29, 2019 3:32 AM |
What’s that spot above her left eyebrow? Whatever it is, I’ll bet that’s why no one will hand her a script.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 29, 2019 3:32 AM |
She suffered the same faith as Brooke Shields. Was beautiful when a teenager, but didn’t translate into adulthood
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 29, 2019 3:37 AM |
I've always liked her. She gained extra points for dissing Elisabeth Hasselback on air on The View.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 29, 2019 3:37 AM |
Another vote for Batgirl. She looked dumpy in her costume.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 29, 2019 3:38 AM |
How does she get highlights like that? They’re so subtle and not streaky.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 29, 2019 3:38 AM |
Excess Baggage did not help her career either.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 29, 2019 3:40 AM |
[quote]I don't think she had much range. Could you see her as a serious actor?
[quote]She is/was very one-note.
That's about 70% of Hollywood actors, so it can't be it.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 29, 2019 3:41 AM |
What did we think of her in An American Woman?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 29, 2019 3:41 AM |
It was sort of a shock seeing her play Mom roles these days -- in King Cobra and elsewhere.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 29, 2019 3:45 AM |
They made a big deal when she got chubby around the time of Batman & Robin. They were calling her Fatgirl.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 29, 2019 3:52 AM |
She was mostly a one hit wonder also. She's mainly remembered for Clueless.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 29, 2019 3:54 AM |
I think she wanted to take a break after everyone went on about how fat she was.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 29, 2019 3:57 AM |
Losing her career seems to have worked out pretty well for her. She has her shit togethe.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 29, 2019 3:58 AM |
But honestly, starring in Clueless is like dropping the mic. How do you top that?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 29, 2019 4:01 AM |
I don’t think it was just her weight.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 29, 2019 4:07 AM |
She had the best hair in the business.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 29, 2019 4:08 AM |
She’s still working in semi big streaming roles so she avoided the hex. Good for her.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 29, 2019 4:10 AM |
I saw her at farmers market in Hollywood a couple of times. She was with her kid. Once she smiled at me. Like a lot of actors, she's petite in person.
Julie Delpy on the other hand...
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 29, 2019 4:11 AM |
Everybody made such a big deal about her being so fat at the 96 Oscars. You would think she was as huge as Chrissy Metz!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 29, 2019 4:11 AM |
I loved her in Blast from the Past.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 29, 2019 4:14 AM |
She still looks pretty good.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 29, 2019 4:23 AM |
She told Oprah she has to shit 10 times a day due to her vegan diet. Who would hire someone who would be such a distraction on set. No one wants to wait around for that.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 29, 2019 4:34 AM |
She prechews her child's food for him and probably still breast feeds him.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 29, 2019 4:37 AM |
She is adorable, but sadly was horrible in American Whateves
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 29, 2019 4:39 AM |
Fatgirl destroyed her career.
I liked her on that matchmaker series on network, though.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 29, 2019 4:40 AM |
r28, there wouldn't be much waiting around, it doesn't take long to shit on a vegan diet.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 29, 2019 4:44 AM |
She (and Liv) were so hot in the Aerosmith videos. She had that adorable crooked mischievous smile and great hair and general charm that was really captured in 'Clueless'. She had a lot of potential, but for whatever reason, her moment passed and she was relegated to 90s has-been for awhile. I'd love to see her make more of a comeback. She was recently in 'Book Club' playing one of Diane Keaton's daughters, but she wasn't even given the meatier of the two daughter roles. She always seemed like she should have been a much bigger star than she actually was.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 29, 2019 4:51 AM |
Liv went on to the MCU and Alicia chose DC.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 29, 2019 5:11 AM |
she was fun in the Cryin' video.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 29, 2019 5:14 AM |
She got to kiss a young Paul Rudd. Lucky her!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 29, 2019 5:45 AM |
The bloom of her beauty was short lived. Same with Liv Tyler. Same with Brooke Shields.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 29, 2019 6:06 AM |
Her inability to act and her face were probably hurdles to a sustained career. But she has a really beautiful eye color in the OP pic.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 29, 2019 6:14 AM |
I watched her in American Woman, but the show isn’t very good and neither is she. She’s not hot or sexy, and does this weird thing with her mouth. Her voice is unsexy, too.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 29, 2019 7:03 AM |
She's had a decent career based off of mediocre talent.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 29, 2019 7:15 AM |
[Quote] I liked her on that matchmaker series on network, though.
I liked it too.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 29, 2019 7:37 AM |
She got a big production deal after Clueless but I think Excess Baggage was all that came of it. someone that young and inexperienced should of just stuck with grabbing all the good roles available- she missed her moment. Blast from the Past was fun but she was a lot older. Brittany Murphy was the real surprise from Clueless. I miss her.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 29, 2019 7:56 AM |
What a waste. Alicia could play the frauest frau that ever fraued.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 29, 2019 8:08 AM |
Alicia is very underrated. She was actually the first choice to play Angela Chase on My so-called life as she was a real 15 year old but already emancipated. The creators were impressed but they ultimately went with an even younger choice, 13 year old Claire Danes, because they thought Silverstone was too pretty (their own words).
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 29, 2019 8:15 AM |
[quote] should of just
Oh, dear...
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 29, 2019 8:54 AM |
R44, what are you talking about? Alicia Silverstone was not 15 during My So Called Life. And Claire Danes was definitely not 13.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 29, 2019 9:08 AM |
[quote]How does she get highlights like that? They’re so subtle and not streaky.
She's all natural and vegan, yet gets her hair bleached? Does she wear leather too?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 29, 2019 9:23 AM |
r47, you do, of course, know that the body naturally produces hydrogen peroxide, right? That a build up of catalase is what turns hair white? So, an argument founded upon 'things that bleach hair are inorganic' is the argument of an abject moron?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 29, 2019 9:28 AM |
R46 There's an entire interview on a DVD from Shout Factory (rare collector's item) where Ed Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz and Winnie Holzman talk about this. They say Silverstone was 15 when she auditioned for My so-called life and was their first choice, because even though she was only 15 she was emancipated and could work as an adult, being able to be featured in every scene. They thought she was fantastic but too pretty. The second person to audition was Claire Danes who was 13 at the time and was in town to audition for a part on Schindler's List. She had done one Law and Order episode only.
They decided to go with Danes, because they thought she was versatile and could be seen as less beautiful depending on the way they shot her. She was indeed 13 when they shot the pilot. The series took almost 2 years to be picked up and she was then 15 when they began shooting the season, you can clearly see how young she looks in the pilot episode and how some of the other actors had grown spurt.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 29, 2019 9:29 AM |
She did Clueless.
That's all she needs to do for me.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 29, 2019 9:29 AM |
Someone added this to their wikipedia page:
Alicia Silverstone auditioned before Danes and impressed producer Edward Zwick, who wanted to cast her as Angela; she was also emancipated, so she could work longer hours. His partner Marshall Herskovitz thought that Silverstone was too beautiful to play a conflicted teenager uncertain of herself. Danes' audition impressed both, but as she was 13 and had to attend school, after her casting, the show increased the screen time for the parental characters.

[quote]She suffered the same faith as Brooke Shields.
I thought Silverstone was Jewish, not a traditional Roman Catholic. The Hollywood Jews must have held it against her.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 29, 2019 9:32 AM |
Silverstone is half Jewish. Her dad is jewish and her mother is a converted one, so that played a part I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 29, 2019 9:35 AM |
Boris and Natasha are fascinated by who is Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 29, 2019 9:38 AM |
Damned lousy actress.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 29, 2019 9:40 AM |
"Boris" (me) is half Jewish, so yeah I'm fascinated by it, what's your point?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 29, 2019 9:52 AM |
I'm 'Natasha' and I'm full Jew. Not Orthodox.
Obviously you missed the joke.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 29, 2019 9:54 AM |
She's your typical crazy Frau with boundary issues now. Still remember that viral vid of her swapping food directly from her own mouth to her toddler son's.
She also mentioned having orgasms while in labor with her son... which is apparently not uncommon, but geez do you really need to share that with the world?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 29, 2019 9:54 AM |
she was in that Deer movie by Yorgos Lanthimos so she's got arthouse cred too
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 29, 2019 10:19 AM |
I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Crush. I always cringe when she tells Cary's character that she has her period. But the super punch at the end makes up for it lol
by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 29, 2019 10:44 AM |
UGLY ! Their I fixed that for you 😂
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 29, 2019 12:30 PM |
The big deal about her supposedly looking "fat" as Batgirl was utterly ridiculous- especially considering what most comic book fans look like.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 29, 2019 12:33 PM |
[quote]The bloom of her beauty was short lived. Same with Liv Tyler. Same with Brooke Shields.
Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 29, 2019 1:33 PM |
The movie Excess Baggage proved that she was a one-hit wonder.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 29, 2019 1:36 PM |
R11 I have natural blond streaks and the same coloring/eyes as her. Idk if that has a name but ashen gold/white streaks in the general honey-color mop are common even in young people with that complexion.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 29, 2019 1:40 PM |
After Clueless, Aaron Spelling was desperate to have her on 90210. She turned him down to do movies, which flopped. I wonder if being on such a hit TV show would have benefited her career long-term?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 29, 2019 1:44 PM |
can you image the "she fat!" campaign now?? social media would EXPLODE.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 29, 2019 1:45 PM |
I still live for her drag in that Aerosmith MV. It’s an Aquarius Rising privilege to carry off androgyny with such flair and such fun.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 29, 2019 1:47 PM |
r62, you think comic book fans are a good point of comparison for a superhero?
Your comment was a variation of "Let's see you do better" that the self-righteous use to respond to criticism.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 29, 2019 4:47 PM |

That was NOT my point at all and you damn well know it. If these so-called vegan celebs, who claim that they no longer use certain types of cosmetics, don't eat meat, dairy etc and don't wear leather, and all the other shit they expound on, were truly natural, they'd never be able to leave the house! Do you realize how difficult it is to be 100% natural in everything you eat and purchase?
Those streaks in her hair are the product of getting them done at a salon and also likely getting her entire head of hair dyed their too. More chemicals. Natural hair dyes don't work well unless they're vegetable dyes, they fade fairly quickly and work better on natural blondes. Hair needs to be porous to absorb most dyes, chemical or natural.

R70 is off his meds again. We'll be seeing a lot more of him on this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 29, 2019 6:01 PM |
I always kind of thought she lost momentum with Batman and Robin at the exact same time as Reese Witherspoon gained traction.
In the late 90s and early 2000s, there were only a handful of parts for pretty blonde girls - Elle Woods in Legally Blonde is essentially Cher from Clueless. I mean, can you seen the Alicia and Paull Rudd doing Legally Blonde and Reese and Luke Wilson doing Clueless?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 29, 2019 6:25 PM |
I sorta remember some people making a big deal about how Alicia was replacing Drew Barrymore as the new hot chick in films.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 29, 2019 6:28 PM |
she appeared on Bway in The Graduate with Jason Biggs and Kathleen Turner - not a successful play - didn't last long
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 29, 2019 6:44 PM |
I wasn't the target demo of Clueless but I found it all kind of one note. Yeah, she was cute and funny and non-threatening.
But she didn't jump out at me. Kinda dull. Really nice.
I think she was on the VIEW after a Rosie/Elisabeth blow up and Lizzie tried to palsy up to her and Alicia shot her down.
I liked her in that.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 29, 2019 6:45 PM |
She had the prettiest name to say aloud, musically so feminine and delicate.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 29, 2019 7:11 PM |
Your career options are pretty limited when your range is limited to playing young blonde ditzes and even someone like Christina Applegate (who herself hasn't exactly had an amazing career) got you beat in that category.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 29, 2019 8:16 PM |
I’ve forgotten about that Aerosmith video. Both Silverstone and Liv T were luminous.
It’s really very homo-erotic
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 29, 2019 10:32 PM |
WHET Liv Tyler?

by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 29, 2019 10:34 PM |
R80 She’s on Hulu “harlots”. She’s actually good in it
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 29, 2019 10:34 PM |
Re R70 etc - Why the hell would anyone think a vegan would be opposed to hair dye, unless it was made with animal products?
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 29, 2019 10:36 PM |
The infamous video of Alicia snubbing Elisabeth. Happens within the first 30 seconds.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | April 30, 2019 2:08 AM |

She played a creepy-ish role in The Killing of the Sacred Deer alongside Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman a few years ago. Really weird movie. She's in one scene, but she radiated so much desperation that it's the one major scene in that film that I remember. She did a great job in it.
