So what's the deal with her? I know she didn't want marriage or kids, but has she ever even had a long-term serious relationship? Is she a mess?
Marisa Tomei

She always came across as being a level headed person. Maybe that was her downfall.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 28, 2019 11:38 PM |
She had something going on with Josh Radnor a few years ago. Before that, the Tom Hardy look-a-like. That was probably her longest relationship?

She's into short, stocky, bald quirky guys.

I was a real estate broker in the 90s while in law school. My office was on 12th Street in the Village. One early evening in walks in Marisa Tomei and she asked to rent out her prewar condo down the block and she invited me over to see it on the spot. I remember the Oscar on the top shelf in the main closet (not on a mantle). She let me hold it which was so cool. Anyway, we hit it off and I rented the condo for her. Very nice and very private, I did not get any kind of gay or straight vibe out of her. She was all about her work and career choices. Isaac Mizrahi lived in the building and one time when he saw me in the building asked if he could see Marisa's unit. I felt he was being nosey since he was not looking to rent it and told him I had to ask Marisa first and he said don't bother (in a queeny way). I told Marisa and she said she could care less if he comes by for a look but I never ran into him again.

She still looks great and natural and has probably now aged out of the "sportfuck who the male lead doesn't *really* want to be with" role that she got bizarrely typecast in (What Women Want, The Guru, Alfie, Crazy Stupid Love, etc.).

The building where Marisa lived and Isaac still lives is a beautiful 1920's co op building and the block (12th between 5th and 6th) is one of the prettiest in the city, His apartment was in Architectiral Digital about 5 years ago. It's beautiful and must be. worth at least $10 MM.

Back in the day, I noticed her as Maggie, on A Different World. When Cosby was a big deal, they were probably aware of the pre Cappuccino days. They had Lisa Bonet and Tomei. They almost completely recast, I remember the last episode before the big shakeup, all the girls danced at a pajama party to MARRS Pump up the Volume. Marisa was the best, even next to trained Jasmine Guy and Debbie Allen involved. I knew she'd be a star. She's like a Parker Posey type, who just happens to have an Oscar. She not only worked for Cosby, Weinstein as well. This Lady has stories.

Really weird how she hasn't done TV, especially now that there's no stigma and she's probably starved for lead roles. You'd think she be perfect to lead a series or miniseries. She turned down The Newsroom.

I remember when she started out on "As The World Turns" as Marcy Thompson, a troubled teen who accused saintly Dr. Bob of molesting her. She really stood out from the cast (which included Meg Ryan and Julianne Moore), and I just knew she would go on to bigger things. Unfortunately, she became something of a cunt, refusing to acknowledge her soap past (unlike Moore, who actually returned for an appearance on ATWT just before it went off the air).

Umm, if you're talking about Mira Sorvino, she WAS difficult to work with. And the thing is, where there's smoke, there's fire. Most people who have a rep as being difficult ARE difficult.

I believe Mira Sorvino was difficult to work with and i'm sure Weinstein blackballed her.
But she's not a very good actress to begin with. Not excusing Weinstein and his despicable ways but she was never great.
I disagree that Sciorra is charisma-free. I think she's a good actress. I did wonder why she suddenly fell out of favour in the mid-90s when she seemed to be everywhere at the beginning of the '90s. It was a very noticeable drop-off.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 29, 2019 4:59 AM |

Where did she say that Logan cheated on Marisa? He told her? It did seem like he was using her. She brought him to the Oscars when she was nominated for The Wrestler. Then he was in Prometheus around the time they must have broken up. Guess she was no longer of any use to him. Probably why she's had no known relationships since then. He did a number on her too apparently.

by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 29, 2019 5:56 AM |
Bizarre how much Marshall-Green looks like Hardy. I think I've actually seen Logan in something, that I thought he was very good in, and assumed it was Hardy.
My favorite Marisa Tomei movie is the one where she falls in love with Christian Slater, who plays a retard who thinks he has a baboon heart. She gets raped in the snow because they live somewhere cold and Christian gets the shit beaten out of him by the attackers because he's been stalking Tomei and so was there when the guys attacked her. In retrospect, I'm not sure there's anything not fucked up and wrong about this movie. But so then Marisa falls in love with her retard stalker and he dies after catching a hockey puck. It's a love story.
I saw her on stage with Quentin Tarantino in some play where she's a blind person and Tarantino breaks into her apartment and they talk a lot. They were both awful.
Given the company she was keeping, I'm surprised she still has a septum.

R124 never happened. It was a tight, hotly contested supporting actress contest that year. Joan Plowright won the globe and had the older veteran slot. Miranda Richardson was a breakout star that year and won a globe also (lead actress comedy musical), Judy Davis was the critics darling, and Vanessa Redgrave was in a huge art house film Howard’s End, and many felt she should have a second Oscar.
The vote was split allowing Marisa to sneak in, pure and simple.

There was a moment a few years ago where there were a whole stream of performances like Scarjo in Don Jon and JLaw in American Hustle that were clearly influenced by her. I'd say ultimately the Academy made the right choice.

Of course, I should also mention that she was a lot better than those wannabe performances. JLaw of course was particularly awful.

The highlight of her career was As The World Turns, working beside Meg Ryan and Julianne Moore.

When Ellen had a huge comeback comedy show on HBO a few years after her coming out and then staying out of sight for a while after her show was cancelled....Marisa was in the audience front and center. I think Gillian Anderson was there too.I thought it was there way of coming out but I guess not.

and to continue off of what r125 said, Emma Thompson was winning lead actress and the feeling was they wouldn't want to give both awards to a foreign actress (british specifically even though Judy Davis is Australian everyone thought she was British...see Palance's joke above.) Davis was the favorite going in but she was in a Woody Allen movie and this was the height of the Woody/Mia split. (plus Davis was kind of difficult and made enemies on her own.) hence Marisa.

was an effort by the academy to investigate how such a sorry performance won, if bribes or cheating was involved, she was dead last in vegas odds to win

To understand her appeal, just watch her in "Untamed Heart". She's adorable but not wimpy. Kind of a Bronx-ish Brittany Murphy. Rosie Perez is great in it too.

I met her and RDJ at the Toronto Film Festival when they were promoting Only You. Both of them were very gracious, down to earth and funny. I'm 6'4 and I remember RDJ made some crack about our height difference, although I don't recall exactly what he said.

She's playing Edith Bunker in the live Norman Lear tribute on Wednesday. Hmm....

such a shock when she won Oscar, many wanted her to give it back as obviously the mafia or someone bought it for her....

Maybe that's why she's kept her head down but continued working steadily -- mostly in comedy and mostly in bit parts like "Dog Owner" in Trainwreck.

Worked with her on an indie film years ago....she was fine- hardworking, diligent, but like almost all actresses, a little neurotic. Went bar hopping with her and her team and a handsome PA (looked like Johnny Depp), and since I really don't drink, ended up being the designated driver. She's a lot of fun, and I can say that I had a drunk MT in the back of my pickup truck. She ended up dating the PA for a couple of years.

Marisa is getting good reviews for "Frankie". The film sound like typical Ira Sachs but it sound like she upstages Huppert.

r157, drunk enough to monopolize a guy in a wheelchair, sit on his lap and twirl with him, then make some young friends in the club, go to their house, sit in uncomfortable silence in their living room, then suggest a water balloon fight outside, which we did.

I thought she acted like a diva on set. This was in a cast with other big stars who were all gracious and friendly. She seemed full of herself. I was a fan of hers before that but not anymore.

I sat next to her on a plane once. She had her own personal airline handler escort her in. She was wearing dark glasses with her head wrapped up in a scarf. When she sat down I asked, at first not knowing who she was, if she was headed home, and she meekly said "yeah." We didn't talk the rest of the flight. Once we landed she asked me to help her get her baggage out of the overhead bin. I did, and she thanked me.
Looking back, I wish I'd engaged her more. But she for sure seemed like she wasn't into being recognized.
