Never saw the show, was pretty young when it was on air.Never knew it had a gay character that was a regular. You never hear about the show. Was is it progressive for the time? Did they have storylines about him being gay or was he just there for a punchline? On a different note the biggest sign of the times that they saw Charlie sheen to be a natural fit to follow the squeaky clean Michael J Fox. I find it hard to believe no one knew he was a scumbag by the late 90s

I wanted to like it more because of MJF but found it to be too glib and lacked heart.

Of course they knew, tsss. Didn't matter much either, because he was a different character and a former party boy and an aging womanizer. He is also the Anti-Tom Cruise and Anti-Michael J Fox, it is really funny that he also did the anti-side to him with this one, and he was the dark side of them with his career, all three dark-haired, Sheen not short, but not tall either. Wall Street is kinda the anti- Secret of my Success of Fox, Fox did a big 80s Vietnam movie, and Cruise, and Sheen did one as well, I guess they were all dark, but I guess Sheen's was the meanest, coolest, wildest and hardest and most unsympathetic one. All three dark-haired, big stars, Southern types, Sheen not short, but not tall either; Sheen did a Top Gun spoof with Hot Shots, the show went to LA with him from New York, so that also made an anti-thing, etc. .
The character of Michael J Fox was inspired by George Stephanopolous, he kinda was it in the main protagonist in Primary Colors, played by the black guy, and the character of Michael J Fox in The American President was also inspired by Stephanopolous. Martin Sheen and Fox got a political series as leads after acting in the commercial and critical success of The American President. John Mahoney and Wendy Malick later played a couple for the last two seasons in Frasier, who both played in The American President. In my eyes part of a Cybil, Chuck Lorre, Two and a Half Men, Family Matters, Ferris Bueller, Back to the Future et al group that rivaled a Cheers, Frasier, Will and Grace, Seinfeld, Castaway, Mad About You, NBC et al group and fed on each other. Find it one of the best sitcoms of all time, very well cast as well, too bad they don't have a DVD box out of it in German, I really liked watching it. The mayor played one of Grace's former lovers, in W&G. They showed it here on one of the main stations in Germany, and they tend to show series here more that are well done and also when they are more cultural. Good gay character, yes, also. Very good work and intelligent, show might have had a certain problem, um.

I believe they brought Heather Locklear in later to boost the ratings. And MJF had already been diagnosed with Parkinson's but hadn't told the public. His movements are jerky and stiff initially and then it becomes more pronounced as the producers tried to accommodate the decease without drawing attention to it.

No, it was just who he was. He wasn't comic fodder. He was a great character - like a Van Jones type.
There's an episode on Youtube where Michael's character thinks Carter's (Michael Boatman) boyfriend likes him.

R6 I think he was diagnosed in 91. I saw him host snl around that time. It seems like he is on something until you learned that him putting his hand in pocket and constantly moving is what helped him before he was forced to retire. I read they had to delay taping in front of the studio audience for about 90 mins so his meds can kick in

Yeah I recall Michael Boatman’s character got married on the show
