Do you think Mickey Rooney was hot back then?

I think so. Loved short guys. He was so hot on Boys Town

Rooney was 17 or 18, playing a boy.

We will not feed your perversity.

Hot? No one ever accused Mickey Rooney of being hot.

by Anonymousreply 4April 26, 2019 11:01 AM

Ava Gardner did, R2! She was his first wife and married him when he was one of the top if not *the* top star in Hollywood.

Apparently Ava was a virgin when she got with Rooney and she said that nobody ever measured up to him in bed (he was that good) and Ava ended up having *a lot* of men, so that really meant something coming from her.

Ava also continued sleeping with Rooney after their divorce and when she was dating others, because she couldn’t get enough...

by Anonymousreply 10April 26, 2019 11:14 AM

He was cute-ish. And he started getting and banging gash from an early age, so obviously he had something going for him that contemporary men don't see, although he does look pretty sweet in r9's pic.

And he really, really didn't age well.

by Anonymousreply 11April 26, 2019 11:17 AM

The Irish tend to age very badly in general, but this was doubly true for Mickey...

Uh, oh; I just googled his name and coincidentally he is getting the “MeToo” treatment from a new(?) gossip book! Sounds bad, but also, what actress would ever think that a mere actor could get them a role in *any* movie?!?

Can you imagine banging that old troll? Not even if I was eating cat food out of a dumpster.

by Anonymousreply 13April 26, 2019 11:35 AM

He was hot headed... that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 14April 26, 2019 12:39 PM

He was very talented...a good actor, entertainer, did character roles, could cut a rug and sing with Judy Garland, and I think he was a musician?... could play the drums? I'm not sure about that, though. He was very versatile in his talents. He did have that confidence that made up for his short stature. He seemed like an angry guy, in his later years.

by Anonymousreply 15April 26, 2019 12:45 PM

Is that why Ava is in bed in that picture? Did he practically split her in two or something

by Anonymousreply 16April 26, 2019 12:48 PM

Was he a dwarf?

by Anonymousreply 17April 26, 2019 12:51 PM

On stage a star, offstage an apparent nightmare. I saw him in "Sugar Babies", "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and "Let's Put on a Show" with last wife Jan which was half Mickey career memories/half Jan nightclub show which was forgettable. He was hysterical in "Sugar Babies", although I'm more of an Ann Miller fan than him. Like someone else wrote, he could be profoundly affecting in dramatic roles, although I have a hard time with "The Human Comedy". He was good as a young Tom Edison and allowed Elizabeth Taylor to be the focus of "National Velvet". Some of his B films ("Quicksand", "Drive a Crooked Road") are quite good, but his later musicals ("All Ashore", "Sound Off!") are hard to take. I never really liked his characters in the "Let's put on a show!" musicals with Judy Garland. He was far too hammy and in your face, while Judy knew how to be subtle. She holds up in those films. In spite of an Oscar nomination for "Babes in Arms", he does not.

As far as his personal life is concerned, he obviously had many mental issues stemming from the fact that he was on stage from the time of being a baby which really must have screwed with his head. He became very popular in shorts as Mickey McGuire and was in bit parts in movies from an early age, and supporting parts soon after, finally getting leads by the time he was 12-13. Apparently, the widowed Norma Shearer seduced him soon after her husband died. I am not surprised by the fact that he was a narcissistic asshole. Apparently, Ann Miller told him straight out that she wouldn't stand for his crap, and I greatly respect her for that. He seemed to be humble when accepting a lifetime Oscar when stating that having been the top star in America for nearly a decade, he had a difficult time dealing with being a has-been by the age of 25, only re-building his reputation as a supporting player and character actor. He didn't do any stage outside of vaudeville until the 1960's, and was nearly 60 when "Sugar Babies" became a smash hit, in his first Broadway show. He toured in it afterwards (I saw it twice at the Pantages in late 1983) and then did the tour of "Forum", returned to Broadway for "Will Rogers' Follies", and other personal appearances. Apparently, Jan Rooney's family abused him at the end, although there are mitigating circumstances. He had a privileged but difficult life, because he never really got to be a kid, and that affected him greatly when he grew up to be a man. His "Andy Hardy" series is a mixed bag of goody-goody morals of the time that doesn't quite reflect the truth behind the scenes.

Sure, if you wanna screw a leprechaun.

by Anonymousreply 21April 26, 2019 1:31 PM

You guys are so mean! But this is DL, so...

Even Rooney himself admitted that his 5’2 frame really hindered his career as an adult and that it was very difficult to find roles after coming back from WW2–which was a shock to his system as he was the biggest star in the US when he was drafted.

Mickey also allegedly had bipolar disorder, a gambling problem, and anger/emotional issues as an adult—which I find sad.

I appreciate his talent and like many of his films, but I feel bad that he became such a messed up person as an adult; I think that someone performing onstage since they were “16 months old”—as Wikipedia says—is just not going to turn out normal and happy as an adult, it’s just too weird of a life...

by Anonymousreply 22April 26, 2019 1:43 PM

Does anyone know if Mickey had a horror “stage mom” (or sad) like Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers, Hilary Duff, Macauley Culkin, etc...?

by Anonymousreply 26April 26, 2019 1:51 PM

R23 His father, Joe Yule, was a vaudevillian and character actor on stage and in films. I have seen him as Jiggs in the two available films of the "Jiggs & Maggie" series (not available commercially because of rights concerning the original comic strip) and many other movies. I knew nothing about his mother until I saw your question, and according to Mickey's Wikipedia page, had divorced Joe and moved to Hollywood where she pushed for him to get cast as Mickey McGuire. So while I know little about her character (I'd have to read that huge bio that came out about Mickey a few years ago), it seems that indeed, she was a bit of a stage mother. Joe Yule appeared in several of Mickey's films, most likely in bit parts.

The Taron Egerton of his day

by Anonymousreply 29April 26, 2019 2:20 PM

That was actually a fun read, R25! It was creaky (kind of bad) writing, but also like reading someone’s diary, so it was good gossip!

Wow, no wonder Frank Sinatra tried to kill himself after Ava left him (I always wondered); according to Mickey in the article above, Ava had a special, magical, one of a kind pussy—and then some!

by Anonymousreply 30April 26, 2019 2:23 PM

What, did she have some kind of lubricated tongue inside her VJ that licked it all over as it moved upside down?

by Anonymousreply 31April 26, 2019 2:26 PM

Here is Mickey’s *very graphic* (and very immaturely written, lol ) description of Ava and her anatomy, R31; it basically sounds like what you’re thinking/describing (as weird as that is...)

“We were both athletic in bed, and pretty verbal, too. Once Ava lost her Southern reticence, she seemed to enjoy using the f-word.

And I didn’t mind a bit, when, for example, she would look me straight in the eye, raise a provocative eyebrow, and say, “Let’s fuck, Mickey. Now.”

Some years later, Hedda Hopper would say of Ava, “That girl was made to love and be loved.” I had to agree with that judgment.

Oh, we told ourselves that we were very much in love, and our sex life helped us in that particular piece of self-deception.

Once Ava got into the spirit of things, she wanted to do it all the time. And she quickly learned what it was that turned me on about her.

Let me count the ways: a smoldering look, a laugh, a tear, kicking off her shoes as soon as she got in the house, getting all dolled up, not getting all dolled up, coming down to breakfast in a pair of shorts—and no top at all.

In bed, let’s just say that Ava was…well, she had this little rosebud down there at the center of her femininity that seemed to have a life of its own. I am not talking about muscles. One gal I knew had trained her muscles, so that she could snap carrots in her pussy, not hands.

But Ava had something different. She had this little extra—it was almost like a little warm mouth—that would reach up and grab me and take me in and make my, uh, my heart swell.

She also had big brown nipples, which, when she was aroused, stood out like some double-long golden California raisins. And I sucked those warm breasts, I did taste her mother’s milk.”

Mickey Rooney 'wore out the casting couch' and was 'abrasive and nasty,' new book alleges—he made up casting calls to fuck ingenues

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 37April 26, 2019 3:38 PM

I’m sure Rooney had *plenty* of problems and was likely a huge asshole with all the issues he had, but I will say, R37, that those actresses were dumber than a box of rocks to think that an *actor* could do anything to get them a role in any film...

It’s not like Rooney was a studio boss or producer or even a director, so actresses sleeping with him for roles is bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 38April 26, 2019 3:58 PM

News flash! Mickey Rooney was not Irish. He himself said he wasn't. His parents were from Scotland I believe. Rooney was his stage name, Yule was his real surname.

by Anonymousreply 39April 26, 2019 4:12 PM

Ew no. I don't, OP. This is an interesting thread to read, though.

by Anonymousreply 50April 27, 2019 3:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 52April 27, 2019 4:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 53April 27, 2019 5:26 AM

They said his wife was killed by her lover in L.A. in a murder/suicide while Mickey was on location filming a movie in the Philippines (I believe).

How could Mickey have murdered her (and her lover)? I believe he could be an angry asshole, but it’s impossible for him to he in two places at once, right?

by Anonymousreply 54April 27, 2019 5:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 56April 27, 2019 6:00 AM

Did he ever assault girls back in his MGM days? I read that they had a studio brothel back then that Rooney often visited.

by Anonymousreply 57April 27, 2019 6:02 AM

No thanks... pumpkin head, bulbous features and that skin that looks pasty and like it's covered in eczema. Have always avoided anything that listed his name over the decades. Looks like a hot headed little prick and gives off that vibe too. They have really pushed a lot of male fugs in the entertainment industry over it's history, in front of and behind the cameras. These guys wouldn't be looked at twice on the street. How lucky did they all get screwing all these glamorous women?

by Anonymousreply 58April 27, 2019 6:09 AM

Ava was definitely one of the most beautiful women ever put on film, R58, and she was a fireball but young Mickey Rooney and Frank Sinatra had charisma and talent in spades and I suspect that is what truly attracted Ava to them.

Lots of beautiful women will overlook non-perfect looks for talent, charisma, power, influence, etc. in a man...

by Anonymousreply 59April 27, 2019 7:24 AM

Agreed, R9! "The Human Comedy" is terrific. I ran across it one day and ended up watching the whole thing. I've watched it several times since.

by Anonymousreply 60April 27, 2019 7:32 AM

R59 I agree, that many other characteristics attract certain women to particular types of men. I just wonder how many of these guys really deserved to be in the positions they were in within the industry? So many of them seem like 'not much' when I rewatch many old movies. Their presence, and their line delivery, the way they sound on film. Not very convincing. We are manipulated by a system which is really, 'who the studios wanted us to watch', that I think about the talent that never got a foot in the door. Are many really 'legends'? I don't think so. Who didn't have connections? Money? Fuck the right people? Be a member of the boys club? .... I think smoke and mirrors is an understatement...

by Anonymousreply 61April 27, 2019 7:49 AM

Dana Carvey used to do a pretty good Rooney.

"I was the biggest star, IN! THE! WORLD! YA HEAR ME?!"

When he was shiny and unwrinkled, he would have made a sweet, smooth bottom boi....

Seems as if he were compensating for his stature by being 200% heterosexual. BO-ring!

by Anonymousreply 65April 27, 2019 9:01 AM

Isn't The Human Comedy the one where he gets up in the morning in just pajama bottoms and has a very cute hot tight body?

His descriptions of Lana and Ava are not eew at all. Is it that you're gay that you find it nasty? Maybe it's a bit too honest but who doesn't feel that way about some of the hotter men we've fucked? With different anatomy of course. I do think he's playing the drums himself in SUTB.

And how could one not be fucked up and mean considering how young he was when he became a superstar and then in a matter of years fell like a rock and became a joke. You just have to stay clear of these people.

What I'm interested in is one of his wives whom he told of a sexual interest he had responded 'If I did that I'd lose my immortal. soul.' What was it? A threesome with another woman? Rimming? Scat?
