The stylist at Great Clips wanted me to leave a tip
Hunh? I go to Great Clips because it's an anonymous, in-and-out no frills haircut.
I got stuck on the screen and she said just pick how much you want to leave. I sheepishly said I was just going to skip it.
"Then press enter". After that she avoided eye contact.

My God, Great Clips is awful. Their "stylists" all seem to be laid off cafeteria ladies or kicked to the curb stay at home moms who thought it would be a good idea to go to beauty school. I've had my hair butchered when I needed a haircut in a pinch. You know it's not going to end well when they ask what # clipper you want. "So let's start out with #3 and blend it in to a #4." WTF? I found an awesome barber in his early 20s that does a fab job. He's always stoned I think but he has skills. $30 and I tip him $10.

Unless your stylist is the owner of the establishment, OF COURSE you tip. Always. Most stylists have to pay rent for the chair where space you're getting your haircut.

It’s not that complicated. The lower numbers make it shorter. Obviously you didn’t know what you wanted, so they suggested starting with a 4.

I go to a barber shop, where the owner is usually not around, instead there are two Chinese gals. Whichever one of the gals I get each does an excellent job, so for a beard trim I tip $2, if it's combined with a quick buzz cut, I make it $3.

Those expensive salons in NYC? A real horror story. I went to one with a friend once and the haircut and style was hundreds. The salon gave her a handful of envelops after she paid--each envelop was for a different employee at the salon--one for house keeping, one for the person who shampooed her hair, one for the greeter, one for the person who actually cut her hair, one for the person who booked the appointment, etc. It was outrageous and she was expected to tip EVERYONE.

R56 You have a point. This was in college. She was my BFF and would call me about various "hair crisis," including that she accidentally set her hair on fire while lighting a cigarette on her gas stove. And multiple calls about her hair being the wrong shade and that she thought she was going bald, even though she wasn't. So when we went to NCY, it was a big deal that she booked this certain stylist. I never understood any of it, since I cut my own hair. The place was full of old women with very obvious plastic surgery.

Places like Supercunts and Hair Sluttery stylists depend on those tips. They only make $10 an hour. So if you do three men’s haircuts in an hour with a $5 tip on each, they are only making $25 an hour. That’s hardly enough for a person to live on these days.

When did America become tip driven? Why can't people be paid decent wages, so the customer doesn't have to tip because a decent wage for staff is already factored into the price?
That way you only tip for exceptional service (you should already be given a good service, because it's good business and it's your job to provide good service).

Question: I am a long-time customer of a stylist in a swanky salon in a major metropolitan city. The practice is, once you're settling payment for services with the reception team, one is given a 'discreet' envelope in which to place the tip; whereby, upon sealing it, you place it in a discreet slot (shut-up) in the counter, where the envelope drops into the unknown.
Does your stylist keep all $ in said envelope, or is the $ shared amongst the service team?

Back in the late 90's I was working for a high end furniture store. I had a customer that has just purchased a condo and I was working with them to furnish it top to bottom...window treatments, furniture, custom bedding, the whole nine yards. I think they spent around 100k with me. I wrapped up the project around Christmas time and they gave me a Christmas card with a check for 6k as a tip. I was blown away, in no way was I expecting it, the commission on the job alone was substantial, and I was excited for the bump in income. I attempted to return the check and they insisted I keep it. I'll always remember their generosity. I try and be generous in as many ways as I can. I'm not in the position to tip in any huge way, but a couple of bucks here and there can make a difference in someones day to day life.

They used to do that envelope thing at the Vidal Sassoon. I think it all went to the stylist.

R98 In the United States, gas jockeys were often tipped for their services, but this is now rare as full-service stations are uncommon except in the states New Jersey and Oregon (counties with more than 40,000 residents), and the town of Huntington, New York, where retail customers are prohibited by law from pumping their own gas.

Everyone knows Americans tip, it’s what we do. Man only cheapskate losers don’t.
Last month in Mexico City I was asked if I wanted to tip upon checking out from the bathhouse. You can buy drinks there and pay at the end of your stay, like in Europe, but they don’t ask for tips in Europe. I noticed they didn’t ask the Mexican patrons.
Anyway, I tipped $5 like OP should have tipped. Got into a hot four way, including a nice thruple penetration that I will remember until the day I day.
