He's not handsome nor tall, and though he is a fine actor, he's not particularly compelling nor photogenic. Yet somehow he stays a top movie star.

Gotta be Rooney Mara. Little talent. Not riveting at all. Acts like a church mouse. No confidence. Talks with a lisp. 5'2" at best. No charisma. Horrific at selling a movie. Terrible in interviews. Not overly attractive. No presence on screen or off. Wouldn't notice her in an empty room.

Renner and Affleck are good ones - always thought Casey was a more interesting actor than Ben, even if he's a creep.
Kidman had awful plastic surgery but she's been great in a few movies - To Die For and Eyes Wide Shut especially.
Never understood Jennifer Aniston's appeal.

I don't disagree, R30, but Meet The Parents is part of the problem for me-- it's a desperately unfunny, wince-inducing bore. It's unfathomable how something both so mean-spirited and so dull became so popular, let alone spawned what? Two or three sequels?

Jennifer Lawrence. No technique, terrible accent work, unpleasant speaking voice. Her Oscar win is one of the weakest in that category.
She’s also not very pretty—big forehead, pointy chin, dead beady eyes, chipmunk cheeks, stubby nose...the list goes on and on.
She comes across as crass, ignorant, arrogant, and ungrateful for her remarkable success. She doesn’t even hide her disdain for her fans, publicly discussing how rude she is when people try to approach her in public.

Renner is so fucking ugly. Arrival had its share of problems but he didn't make things any better, he was a charisma black hole in that film. I have to imagine he's pleasant to work with and has a good industry reputation and that is enough to carry him with decision makers because god knows I wouldn't miss him in anything.

I can't stand him or any of the other guys in Judd Apatow's douche crew. I vaguely recall rumors that Hill is a perv. It would be hilarious if Apatow's douche crew was exposed in addition to James Franco. I would love to see smug fake male feminist Apatow be questioned if he supports his friends. He avoids questions about Franco, but still goes on bashing other pervs.

I can't imagine too many people describing him as ever being pretty. His looks were hit or miss. Gerard Butler was moderately attractive on his best day. But, he had a lot of masculinity, screen presence and sex appeal. It was the combo of all those qualities that made him a movie star. He's always been a poor man's Russell Crowe. And like Crowe, he's maintained his career by sticking to "a man's man" roles.

Leo.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 1, 2019 11:43 AM |
Leo's early work was remarkable imo. But I cannot for the life of me understand how he's still considered a great actor. Ever since The Beach he's been the same in every single fucking movie. And everything looks painfully forced and unnatural. He still has good comedic timing, but as a dramatic actor, he makes me cringe.
I wonder what happened to him. It must have something to do with the extreme media hype after Titanic as it all went to shit after that. Maybe he became mentally ill and is drugged up to the eyeballs like Britney. He gives me seriously zombie-esque vibes in interviews.
Anyway, for reasons beyond my comprehension, a lot of people still consider him 'one of the finest actors of his generation'. Maybe it's explained by the fact that his fans seem to be mostly straight douchebro types these days. From what I know, straight men are not very good at reading emotions. So it would make sense that they have low standards when it comes to acting.

Nicole Kidman! I’d love to know who her audience base is. She’s an absolutely shithouse actress except when playing calculating bitches. Other than that she’s just an white porpoise in a distracting range of wigs. But hey — the now completely irrelevant Vanity Fair LOVES HER. Yet another article about how brave (eh?), daring (eh?), and self inventing (filler addicted?) she is? Sure — why not! But in the REAL WORLD she doesn’t resonate in any way.
