Most bewildering person to currently be a movie star

Right now, I would say it's Jeremy Renner.

He's not handsome nor tall, and though he is a fine actor, he's not particularly compelling nor photogenic. Yet somehow he stays a top movie star.

by Anonymousreply 113June 14, 2019 1:10 AM

jonah hill.......never got him, never will.

I actually find Renner attractive in spite of his douchebro personality.

They are fugly-weird looking guys. I cannot see any screen appeal.

Gerard Butler was hot once upon a time. It was years and years ago, so i have no idea how he's kept his movie star career going so long, but he was once pretty.

by Anonymousreply 12April 25, 2019 2:18 AM

I saw Gerard Butler in a restaurant in LA a few months ago. He looks better in person than he does on-screen which is saying something.

by Anonymousreply 13April 25, 2019 2:35 AM

Totally agree about Renner and Hill. Hill makes me nauseated.

by Anonymousreply 14April 25, 2019 2:38 AM

Even Renners Skype jerkoff video was boring.

by Anonymousreply 15April 25, 2019 2:40 AM

Aw! I think Seth MacFarlane is cute. But he somehow still looks like he's about 15. I find that a little disturbing.

by Anonymousreply 16April 25, 2019 2:47 AM

In whose world is Jeremy Renner really a "star"?

by Anonymousreply 17April 25, 2019 2:48 AM

Bradley Cooper

by Anonymousreply 18April 25, 2019 2:49 AM

Gotta be Rooney Mara. Little talent. Not riveting at all. Acts like a church mouse. No confidence. Talks with a lisp. 5'2" at best. No charisma. Horrific at selling a movie. Terrible in interviews. Not overly attractive. No presence on screen or off. Wouldn't notice her in an empty room.

by Anonymousreply 19April 25, 2019 2:51 AM

Brie Larson. She's plain looking and has no charisma.

by Anonymousreply 20April 25, 2019 4:29 AM

For people who think Rooney Mara is odd, please go to this youtube video and fast forward to the 4:44 point and tell me WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED AT THAT MOMENT. Seriously, you need to see this.

R21 Stinky linky! Give us the name of the video.

by Anonymousreply 22April 25, 2019 4:38 AM

R21, It's not a link. You copy and paste it into your address bar. Are you new to the ol' computer thing? Okay, if this helps, here's the title of the video: Rooney Mara on Letterman 2011-12-14

by Anonymousreply 23April 25, 2019 5:32 AM

R21 Lol what the fuck?!! Is she fully human? I half expect to next see her crawling out of a well with her hair draped over her face!

by Anonymousreply 24April 25, 2019 6:15 AM

R21 At the moment she seemed like a robot getting a technical adjustment. Very weird and science fictionesque. Creepy as fuck!

by Anonymousreply 25April 25, 2019 6:18 AM

Seth Rogen! I swear, he plays the same character over and over! I can't understand the appeal at all. His scripts all read like a stoner believing his ideas are greater than they really are, yet they keep letting him make movies!

by Anonymousreply 26April 25, 2019 6:30 AM

Renner and Affleck are good ones - always thought Casey was a more interesting actor than Ben, even if he's a creep.

Kidman had awful plastic surgery but she's been great in a few movies - To Die For and Eyes Wide Shut especially.

Never understood Jennifer Aniston's appeal.

by Anonymousreply 27April 25, 2019 6:35 AM

[quote]always thought Casey was a more interesting actor than Ben

He is. Still is. He got me to go back to a movie theatre again for the first time since BBM. I wish he'd do something again as good as Manchester.

by Anonymousreply 28April 25, 2019 6:41 AM

Ben Stiller is tall, dark and handsome.

Er, wait -- sorry, he's short, ugly and grating. Absolutely charmless. I find his continuing fame baffling.

by Anonymousreply 29April 25, 2019 6:45 AM

Stiller is easy to understand because of Something About Mary's nuclear success and meet the Parents. He was ambitious and a loser and had MAJOR connections.

Rooney just swallowed a frog when she was gonna say eating hot dogs .... she was uber nervous and it hit at the wrong time. So no she's not a robot.

(Plus robots have personality lol).

by Anonymousreply 30April 25, 2019 11:17 PM

R30 if she's not a robot, then why did she make that clicking noise? I am now convinced she's some sort of "Her" like creation made in a lab by David Fincher.

by Anonymousreply 31April 25, 2019 11:19 PM

Rooney was nervous and swallowed spit a weird way. Some of you sound like you never see people in real life.

by Anonymousreply 32April 25, 2019 11:24 PM

"Rooney was nervous and swallowed spit a weird way."

You can say that again.

by Anonymousreply 33April 25, 2019 11:24 PM

I don't disagree, R30, but Meet The Parents is part of the problem for me-- it's a desperately unfunny, wince-inducing bore. It's unfathomable how something both so mean-spirited and so dull became so popular, let alone spawned what? Two or three sequels?

De Niro's character was so malevolent he belonged in a different movie.

by Anonymousreply 34April 25, 2019 11:39 PM

My post was meant to be directed at R22 not R21. My bad.

I think other actors like Renner. He's like the Rudy of actor: not much of a threat but with a fighting spirit.

by Anonymousreply 42April 26, 2019 5:21 PM

For me, Renner kind of looks like a testicle that has eyes and a mouth drawn on it. But that's what's hot right now, I guess.

Most of these people are stars because of straight guys either identifying with their douchiness (Affleck, Renner, Rogen, Hill) or wanting to fuck them (Lawrence, Stone, Mara, et al).

by Anonymousreply 48April 27, 2019 3:16 PM

Jennifer Lawrence. No technique, terrible accent work, unpleasant speaking voice. Her Oscar win is one of the weakest in that category.

She’s also not very pretty—big forehead, pointy chin, dead beady eyes, chipmunk cheeks, stubby nose...the list goes on and on.

She comes across as crass, ignorant, arrogant, and ungrateful for her remarkable success. She doesn’t even hide her disdain for her fans, publicly discussing how rude she is when people try to approach her in public.

by Anonymousreply 53April 29, 2019 2:45 AM

How did Renner get all crumpled and creased? Jonah hill, Jesse Eisemberg, Adam Sandler, Michael Cera, how did these even get an audition? Jim Carrey is a mystery to me too. He's not just not funny. He unfunny.

by Anonymousreply 54April 29, 2019 3:19 AM

Sean Penn. Ugly as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 59April 29, 2019 6:04 AM

Renner is so fucking ugly. Arrival had its share of problems but he didn't make things any better, he was a charisma black hole in that film. I have to imagine he's pleasant to work with and has a good industry reputation and that is enough to carry him with decision makers because god knows I wouldn't miss him in anything.

by Anonymousreply 60April 29, 2019 7:43 AM

R58 Are any of those people currently movie stars?

by Anonymousreply 61April 29, 2019 2:47 PM

[quote]Jonah Hill is also a homophobe. I hate him.

I can't stand him or any of the other guys in Judd Apatow's douche crew. I vaguely recall rumors that Hill is a perv. It would be hilarious if Apatow's douche crew was exposed in addition to James Franco. I would love to see smug fake male feminist Apatow be questioned if he supports his friends. He avoids questions about Franco, but still goes on bashing other pervs.

[quote] Gerard Butler was hot once upon a time. It was years and years ago, so i have no idea how he's kept his movie star career going so long, but he was once pretty.

I can't imagine too many people describing him as ever being pretty. His looks were hit or miss. Gerard Butler was moderately attractive on his best day. But, he had a lot of masculinity, screen presence and sex appeal. It was the combo of all those qualities that made him a movie star. He's always been a poor man's Russell Crowe. And like Crowe, he's maintained his career by sticking to "a man's man" roles.

I'm going to agree with Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen.

Hopefully they're over, but they seem to be well-connected enough to keep getting work even though nobody actually likes them.

by Anonymousreply 66May 1, 2019 12:03 AM

Seems like in the last several years, the studios have been absolutely forcing that fugly dyke, Cara Dela-whatever, down the public's throat. She's not only in movies, she also models, too, despite not being particularly attractive. She's dull all-around.

by Anonymousreply 67May 1, 2019 9:30 AM

Leo.

by Anonymousreply 68May 1, 2019 11:43 AM

Leo's early work was remarkable imo. But I cannot for the life of me understand how he's still considered a great actor. Ever since The Beach he's been the same in every single fucking movie. And everything looks painfully forced and unnatural. He still has good comedic timing, but as a dramatic actor, he makes me cringe.

I wonder what happened to him. It must have something to do with the extreme media hype after Titanic as it all went to shit after that. Maybe he became mentally ill and is drugged up to the eyeballs like Britney. He gives me seriously zombie-esque vibes in interviews.

Anyway, for reasons beyond my comprehension, a lot of people still consider him 'one of the finest actors of his generation'. Maybe it's explained by the fact that his fans seem to be mostly straight douchebro types these days. From what I know, straight men are not very good at reading emotions. So it would make sense that they have low standards when it comes to acting.

by Anonymousreply 69May 2, 2019 1:24 AM

I've never seen Cara D. in anything, but she has only one single cuntish facial expression in photos. I can't even begin to imagine how badly her acting must suck.

Jason Momoa before he shaved.

by Anonymousreply 71May 2, 2019 1:36 AM

Since when do actors have to be 'tall'?

Most probably lie about their height anyway.

Tom Cruise certainly isn't hurting, neither is Kevin Hart.

But as for the topic at hand, I'd say Will Ferrell, Jason Segel, Mark Wahlberg, Tobey Maguire.

by Anonymousreply 72May 2, 2019 2:03 AM

Why does GQ have a hard on for Jonah Hill. Like that fat fuck is some sort of style icon?

A lot of these people aren’t stars but are famous at what they do, so that counts.

I don't get the Ryans (Gosling and Reynolds) as sex symbols. Charming enough on screen, not unattractive, but harldly sex on two legs. Do women prefer innocuous over hot these days? I like I man that looks like he's up to something, not like he could be my neighbor.

Nicole Kidman! I’d love to know who her audience base is. She’s an absolutely shithouse actress except when playing calculating bitches. Other than that she’s just an white porpoise in a distracting range of wigs. But hey — the now completely irrelevant Vanity Fair LOVES HER. Yet another article about how brave (eh?), daring (eh?), and self inventing (filler addicted?) she is? Sure — why not! But in the REAL WORLD she doesn’t resonate in any way. It’s like she exists in some strange self-applauding Hollywood bubble.
