[Quote]Pete Buttigieg is officially over. He just blamed Trump AND Bernie voters for the problems we currently face.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 22, 2019 8:31 AM |
He's not blaming anyone. He basically is saying that the system in 2016, despite low unemployment and GDP growth, was still failing a lot of people--which made them more open to voting for someone seemingly radical on either political spectrum who would overthrow the establishment (ie. Trump on the right and Bernie on the Left).
When Hillary won the nomination, she came to represent the status quo, and Trump became the de facto anti-establishment candidate, and thus a lot of Bernie voters switched to Trump as a result.
He's just saying that the system is broken and needs to be fixed. That's the root problem, not Trump. He's just a reaction, a symptom.

Response from Comms Adviser
"Come on, @RoKhanna. Acknowledging that the system was so broken that voters were looking to @BernieSanders over the Dem establishment is not an insult, it’s the reality."

"Bernie to Trump" is now trending on Twitter. Pete's really stepped in it this time as people are pissed that he's comparing the two.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 22, 2019 10:50 AM |
He's not comparing the two and you know it, Berniebro.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 22, 2019 3:22 PM |
r14 I'm not a Bernie bro, I was just reporting that people (mistakenly) thought he was comparing the two. I still maintain he's stepped in it, though, as Bernie should be off-limits. Just stop talking about him completely as his supporters are too vicious. This is the one fight he won't win.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 22, 2019 3:32 PM |
Why is Bernie off-limits? That’s the approach Hillary took and a damn lot of good that did. There’s plenty in Bernie’s past that is fair game and he should have to answer for. You know damn well if he’s the nominee the right will bring it all out. They’ve been compiling oppo research on him since 2016 and are just dying to use it.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 22, 2019 3:43 PM |
Bernie shouldn't be off-limits even if his rabid fans freak out. Pete didn't even criticize him. The Bernie or Bust supporters will never vote for anyone but Bernie or Trump anyway. Time to stop coddling them.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 22, 2019 3:46 PM |
I think someone else should pick up that fight. It just doesn't look good to be taking on the candidate with the most progressive ideas. He's being criticised for being too centrist as it is.

There is an equanimity about Pete that will allow him to run a marathon, not a sprint. I think he can handle all of the potholes ahead of him.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 22, 2019 3:51 PM |
Latest polling data (Emerson, 4/17/19) shows him behind Bernie and Biden and tied with O'Rourke. This is his honeymoon period. You are utterly delusional if you think that neoliberal twit is going to win this.

A neoliberal is exactly who's getting elected. You really think people are going to swing from an alt-right turd to a socialist? The population wants normalcy, at least for the next four years. Someone like Pete, Biden, or Beto can provide that.

Pete is right. As R11 summarized "saying that the system in 2016, despite low unemployment and GDP growth, was still failing a lot of people--which made them more open to voting for someone seemingly radical".
That is exactly what happened. That is why Hillary's use of the term "deplorables" was really stupid. A lot of the so-called deplorables were Obama voters who switched to Bernie and/or Trump because they were desperate and had become radicalized after years of no improvement in their lives.

Rivals are scrambling to dig up dirt on Pete Buttigieg
Buttigieg was on nobody's radar as a serious presidential contender until a few weeks ago. Now his competitors are scrambling to find vulnerabilities.
Now his competitors are rushing to file a flood of Freedom of Information Act requests, according to officials, collecting everything he's ever said in public or posted on social media, and poring over years-old budgets from South Bend, Indiana, where he's served as mayor since 2012.
One official from a rival Democratic presidential campaign described Buttigieg as "a 37-year-old kid mayor, who nobody knows anything about."
"He's getting a very significant free pass on a lot of stuff that other candidates aren't getting a free pass on," the official said, citing his willingness to take money from lobbyists as an example. "There's a novelty there. People don't know anything about him, so he can kind of be whatever people want him to be. But if he sustains this, that will come down to earth."
Until the last few weeks, the only group that had kept close tabs on Buttigieg and actively pushed back on him was the Indiana Republican Party. Officials said the state party took notice when Buttigieg in 2017 ran for Democratic National Committee chair, taking it as a sign that his ambitions extended beyond South Bend, population just over 100,000.

And also doing him (and us) a favor at the same time. If he really has something shady in his background or some unforgivable mistakes in his past, we need to know before the primaries. If the Democratic rivals were to be "nice" and let him slide, it's for sure the Republicans and their dirt-diggers won't.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that plans are underway for what will most certainly be Buttigieg’s most high-profile industry fundraiser to date. The event will be held June 19 in Los Angeles at the home of TV superproducer Ryan Murphy and husband David Miller with some of Hollywood's most potent gay power players and couples ready to attach their names as co-sponsors for the event.
In addition to Murphy and Miller, co-hosts include Matt Bomer and husband Simon Halls; CAA partner Bryan Lourd and husband Bruce Bozzi; TV mogul Greg Berlanti and producer husband Robbie Rogers; former People editor Jess Cagle and TV writer-producer husband Matt Whitney; CAA partner Kevin Huvane; and actor Billy Eichner.
Buttigieg recently dipped his toes in the local donors' waters late last month. The South Bend, Indiana, mayor made the rounds with a series of appearances at intimate gatherings with insiders and potential supporters at places like management-production company Brillstein-Entertainment Partners and the private residence of D.C. whisperer and former CAA agent Michael Kives.
Buttigieg formally announced his bid for the White House on April 14, and has since upped his profile with appearances on Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show, Late Night With Seth Meyers and Real Time With Bill Maher. That recent trip to L.A. apparently went well. He is expected to be back in California next month. Buttigieg will be stumping at two events in San Diego on May 8, followed by three events in L.A. on May 9 and six in San Francisco on May 10, according to reports.
After announcing his candidacy, Buttigieg has fielded donations from such Hollywood notables as Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Whitford, Mandy Moore, Jane Lynch, The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken and billionaire mogul James Murdoch. And, on the same day Buttigieg revealed his plans, Bomer, for one, took to social media to tease the upcoming fundraiser.

I say this as a huge Pete fan, and hope he wins the nomination, but after watching pretty much every event he's done, I am noticing a distinct White majority at most of his rallies and speaking engagements.
Not seeing too many people of color.
I wonder when he'll make that pivot to start appealing to more racial minority populations. I fear if he doesn't start soon, this will be used against him by his rivals.

Isn't it possible that Pete's problem attracting racial minorities as supporters might have something to do with him being gay? Statistics do show that black and latino populations, in general, are less accepting of gay people. I think it's mostly a religion thing but it's there. Both groups have finally moved past the 50% mark in support of things like gay marriage (60% for latinos, 51% for blacks) but I think there is still enough animosity or religious rejection there to make their support of Pete less likely.
He might also have a woman problem. His audiences are not only very white, they are very male.

I hate Bernie Sanders but he, Warren, and Harris have all bothered to. He needs to go and find women's organizations and talk to them, latino groups of law makers and talk to them, etc.
It's how this game is played but no one seems to have given him the memo.
There's enough people in this country that hate him because he's gay so he really does need to reach every one he can that might swing a vote his way.

Also white. So I wouldn’t say he has a woman problem. What he has is a people of color problem. Even the gay ones. And he looked awkward as fuck at that Stop and Shop rally. R18 it's good to have a centrist following trump.
The post trump era must focus on compromise, on solidarity and understanding for the real socioeconomic grievances of the "deplorables", on building bridges and pragmatic healing. Going from one extreme to the other leaves heaps of people disenfranchised. Only then can you successfully develop understanding and support for progressive social justice issues concerning minorities.
What they currently understand is:: my life is shit, no one carres about my plight, why should I care about them"?
Solidarity is needed for a progressive, inclusive society. These "deplorables " need to be included and respected as humans just as much as the Trans idiot.

Politics needing to be a United Colors of Benetton ad is the real problem, especially with Democrats. It's all so trite and so pandering, anyhow. You can never please the vocal racial bean-counters; to them, Pete is privileged just by virtue of being a white man (BOO!!!! HISS!!!!) so why prostrate yourself before them? Maybe it's time for the left to try a new strategy that isn't pandering to minorities ("¡y soy Tim Kaine!") and guilting whites that voting for white men is some horrible sin.
But the left won't. Just like they learned nothing from the dozens and dozens of centrist (and WHITE female) congressional candidates that won in 2018, they focus on those that won just because of their identity group: the young Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez! The Muslim woman Ilhan Omar! The first Trans congressional representative! The first... the first... the first...

That CBS interview at R113 is great. They both come across really well IMO. None of it seemed "rehearsed" to me, at least not in a negative "rehearsed to death" kind of way. I really don't get the "rehearsed" complaints; surely it's good to be prepared. Complaining about a politician being "overly prepared" seems to me the height of a petty bullshit criticism, as it was against HRC as well. Complaints about Pete seeming "too rehearsed", or repeating talking points or phrases at this early stage, seem really trollish to me.

I read another hit-like piece on Pete and his fundraising.
It turns out that Pete met with Howard Dean and Dean gave him his blueprint for fundraising. Dean's key to his long-ago campaign was the LGBT community as he was the only candidate supporting Civil Unions. His advice to Pete was to make himself THE candidate for donations from the LGBT community.
Howard Dean acknowledged that the LGBT community could put one of our own over the top.
I have never maxed out a contribution to a candidate but this may be the year to do it.

𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒖𝒓𝒌𝒔: 𝑴𝒂𝒚𝒐𝒓 𝑷𝒆𝒕𝒆 ‘𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆’
The Young Turks host Ana Kasparian responded to a pair of recent statements from Pete Buttigieg that were widely seen as slams against Bernie Sanders, by pointing out the South Bend mayor’s lack of policy prowess, saying he “brings nothing to the table.”
On Thursday’s edition of the TYT Network program The Damage Report, host John Iadarola began by reading recent comments that Buttigieg made to The New York Times, in which he described Sanders’ appeal in 2016 as a “novelty,” and told the paper he didn’t think Sanders could win in 2020.
“I have a hard time seeing the coalition ultimately coming together there,” Buttigieg told the paper.
Kasparian responded to that last claim by noting that Bernie Sanders is “polling pretty well, so… what?”
“And he also has specific policy proposals that he’s been advocating for, literally, for decades,” Kasparian said. “And what does Buttigieg bring to the table, other than a lot of poetic, you know, talk?”
“Honestly, he brings nothing to the table,” she continued. “There’s nothing specific, what would you do? And he thinks that there’s something wrong with running for president and revealing to the voters what you would do and how you would do it.”
Kasparian is referring to the fact that Buttigieg has repeatedly defended his website’s lack of a single written policy proposal by dismissing the very idea of providing detailed policy proposals.
Kasparian then pointed out that while the media consistently presses people like Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for granular details on their policies, “When it comes to Buttigieg, he doesn’t want to reveal what his actual policies are, where his stances are, and for some reason he is better than all these other candidates in the eyes of mainstream media pundits.”
Last week, Buttigieg also compared Sanders supporters with Trump voters, which was also widely seen as an attack on Sanders.

What do you guys think of Chasten taking Pete's last name? Remember when Hillary had to add Clinton to her name when Bill ran even though she hadn't taken it when they got married? Times have changed but I don't know what I think of it. I don't like it when women take the man's name but that's due to the man expecting it to happen without question and almost zero chance of him taking the woman's name because it would emasculate him in his own mind along with the "putting my name on my property" history to the convention.
How does that usually work with gay guys getting married? I can see lesbians arguing the opposite way because both want to take the other's last name but do gay guys want to hold onto their names because of societal pressures? Was Chasten hitching himself more concretely to a rising star? Or, is it a top/bottom thing?

[quote]There's a very simple way to determine whether black people/POC can support Mayor Pete. Do the majority of black people/POC of South Bend, Indiana support him?
[quote]Well, the majority of black people voted for him in his re-election for mayor even though he had a black challenger in the mayoral primary.
This methodology doesn't work.
1. This is a primary with multiple challengers.
2. He's building his reputation right now vs. having already built it there.
3. Black people are different from city to city, coast to coast, urban vs. rural. It's not that dissimilar than LA gays being different than Atlanta gays being different than NYC gays. A gay man from Minnesota may be different than a gay man from NYC even if they're both gay. A black person from Montgomery is different than a black person from Jersey City.
I'm glad you mentioned that he beat his black competitor to help finally put to rest the idea that black people will only vote for other black people. That's not how it works. If Pete actually makes an effort to reach out, answer questions about his past (in relation to the police incidents) and listens then he'll be fine. People will love him since they do in South Bend. He just has to actually do it!
He missed a huge opportunity by not going to the "She the People" presidential forum in Houston. While I know he had other things to do, it would have been something.
They were tough on the people who did show. Kamala did well but Bernie got called out for not answering questions.

R163 I was only saying that if he can't gain support from the majority of black people/POC of his city, then there is little chance of him gaining support from their nationwide communities. Obviously, black people are different around the nation. However, the stories from black people in South Bend, IN about Mayor Pete will still influence the opinions of black people from LA, Miami, Atlanta, Tulsa or NYC.

by Anonymous | reply 206 | April 26, 2019 5:55 PM |
That's fine, R204. I'm sure you're right about the future. But, these people jumping to "Oooh, if not President than, of course, Secretary of State!" sound nuts. Why not straight to Emperor of the World? Experience does still matter. There are thousands of experienced diplomats and Democrats who've been elected nationally who've been serving on committees that deal with international politics and diplomacy for a long time. Comparatively, Pete has done nothing internationally. This type of thinking is a symptom of our whole country's trend toward "ooh, shiny" as the only relevant variable in the equation when it comes to jobs. It's ridiculous.

I like Pete a lot, and I'm not writing him off as a candidate. Obviously, he'd be much better than the current White House occupant. But it's amazing how far the experience bar has been lowered. In 1988, we (rightfully) mocked Dan Quayle for being too inexperienced to be VP, even though he had been a U.S. senator. In 2008, we (rightfully) mocked Sarah Palin for being too inexperienced to be VP, even though she had been a governor. Now, going from small-city mayor to leader of the free world is considered a perfectly fine career move. And yes, I know that Quayle and Palin were idiots and Republicans, whereas Pete is a smart Democrat. But is that where we're at: Anyone who is smart can be president, and experience is irrelevant? (If he can charm the South Bend Chamber of Commerce, surely he'll have no trouble dealing with Kim Jong-un!)

Logic isn't your strong suit, is it? If you want to make that comparison, it's either his executive experience over the 20 member South Bend government compared to the 20,000 or more in the State Department or the 100,000 population of South Bend compared to the 7,000,000,000 population of the world. Either way, he's not even close to being experienced enough. Honestly, in my opinion, the president is more of an inspirational figurehead which he could probably handle as long as he's surrounded by real experience in places like State. Infatuation does not lead to good decisions, so some of you need to pull it back.

R218, you've given no reasons at all. Do you also think that someone who runs the mom and pop gas station down the street could jump into the CEO position of Exxon? That's the comparison you are making. You've given no concrete reasoning at all. None. So, no, our positions are not equal. Opinions and feelings do not equal facts and believing that they do is ruining the country. Just enough with the pie-in-the-sky bullshit. No, Pete has no qualifications to be Secretary of State of the United States of America at one of the most dangerous international relations times in the history of the world. Your feeling do not make it so.

I think Mayor Pete is an upcoming rising star just like Obama was with his magnificent Democratic Convention Speech in 2004. Until that speech, nobody knew who Obama was. Just a flash in the pan some said, however four years later he was President.
I think Mayor Pete has Presidential potential, just not for this election. He is too much too soon for many people in the country to digest. Since he does not plan to run for Mayor again, a cabinet position would be excellent, perhaps as Secretary of the Interior where he could really clean up messes across the country and become popular fast. See how he does in a cabinet position which can groom him for bigger and brighter things. Make sure he is not a one trick pony, so to speak. That also give the world time to get used to Chasten, if he sticks around.

Secretary of Education is a good spot. Buttigieg is married to a teacher and both parents are teachers. He’s very interested in supporting teachers and raising their pay, it’s one of his issues. Through Chasten, he hears about student and teacher concerns all the time and has discussed them at length.

So why did Chasten take Pete's last name? I've never heard of a guy doing that. Is is because Buttigieg is so difficult the idea of their kids having long hyphenated names (with Buttigieg being one of them) was just too much? That's the only reason I can think of.

Interesting. Has Chasten ever talked about this or about his brother? Has he actually said he was kicked out at age 18? Are we certain that Rhyan is, in fact, his brother? I'm not necessarily doubting you, but I had never heard any of this before. I just did a Google search and can find almost nothing about Rhyan and no articles that mention Chasten having brothers or sisters, except for one person's WordPress blog. The only references online to his parents are about how wonderful and supportive they have been. If what you're saying is true, it seems that the campaign has tried to keep all of this quiet.

I’m the person that posted the original post about Chasten being thrown out. I was researching Pete and came across a Chasten interview a few weeks ago that I think was old. Maybe before Pete decided to run. I’m not sure.
In the interview, Chasten made a very carefully edited vague comment about his family telling him it was time to leave, or something like that. Then there was a line about couch surfing at friends.
From that, I extrapolated that it was a lot more dramatic than what he was saying and he was being as circumspect as possible. It must have killed him to hold back from telling his side.
I’m not sure what the source was, but I was researching on google and YouTube. I’m guessing it was a gay friendly source, so maybe try the Advocate? Or other gay friendly publications? I haven’t seen any other reference to it anywhere else, so he probably won’t talk about it again.

Agreed.
Love Pete, want him to win it all, but I'm not buying the "shortest way home" bull he's spinning.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great narrative...accomplished and world-traveled Rhodes Scholar (who could live anywhere) chooses to return and live in the small town he grew up in...but I don't believe for a second that's where Pete's heart really resides. A man of his travels, intellect and ambition isn't content to stay in a small, provincial town like South Bend.
At the end of the day, returning to South Bend was a political calculation...a great, feel-good, "I'm every man" story to leverage when the time came to pursue his greater ambitions.
I don't think he enjoys living there, and whatever the outcome of this election, he and Chasten will be buying a one-way ticket once the narrative has served it's purpose.
And I say all this without judgement. It's a smart move, but just keeping it real.

[quote] In the interview, Chasten made a very carefully edited vague comment about his family telling him it was time to leave, or something like that. Then there was a line about couch surfing at friends.
Apparently he mentioned it during his speech at an HRC event, and yes, it does sound like his parents kicked him out of the house when he came out. This is from the Daily Beast article linked at R261:
[quote] On Saturday night, Chasten (pronounced CHASS-ten) told a packed house at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Houston about moving out of his family home after coming out to his parents as a teenager—an issue that hits close to home for many LGBT Americans.
[quote] “We have a great relationship now, but back then, things weren’t easy,” Chasten said. “Eventually, I thought, ‘I can’t be here anymore,’ and so I moved out without a plan. I was scared, living between my car and friends’ couches.”
It sounds like his parents have come to accept him, but his brother Rhyan is a right-wing pastor who wants nothing to do with Chasten and Pete and is a devoted Trumpster.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | April 27, 2019 8:31 PM |
That is what it sounds like, R271. I’m not sure that’s the exact thing I saw, but the details are the same.
About them leaving SB for greener pastures, I agree. Pete is playing the long game. He served his two terms and it sounds like if he wanted to run again he could win. He decided that was enough.
He said somewhere he and Chasten have six figures of college debt. I bet a lot of that is Chasten having to finance his own education after his parents refused, but neither will say that. It’s spun as, “if course we have a lot of college debt like everyone else, we should change that.” Not, “Chasten’s parents threw him in the street and he had to pay every dime of college himself.” They’re not whining, they’re taking care of it. Good for them.
People criticize him for working at McKenzie, but I think he knew he could pay it down there and he did what he had to do. If he wanted to be rich he could stay there. He’s a Rhodes Scholar, a lot of doors are open to him in the corporate world.
He’s not being a small town mayor to make a living, like a lot of Congress people do forever because they don’t have the abilities he has. It’s a stepping stone for him and he’s obviously smart and planning long term. Shiny image aside, that’s a ruthless, pragmatic, ambitious man with a highly detailed long term tactical plan. Nothing wrong with that, we need more of that.

His lack of experience is certainly not an asset. I might be too much of a fanboy at this time, hence biased, but I think he has some traits to compensate the lack of experience well. So I don't scratch him off my list just yet.
My assumption so far is that he has an IQ way above average and that he is capable of so much more than the average joe. He needs a good challenge to get stimulated. So whatever he will do in the future, it will be something where he can learn while also generating significant output. Already what he stating about his policies is so much more polished than what you hear from other candidates. He has the vision, and the way he explains things, he also has plans on how to get his vision turn reality. His statements have so much substance that more experienced competitors should be embarrassed.
He acknowledged that a good leader needs to be able to listen and surround himself with capable people. He probably learned that at McKinsey. As long as he knows how to recruit right and truly listens, he should be doing fine.

I believe, It's okay to be in an open relationship. It's also okay to not be in one. Your level of intelligence has nothing to do with it. Those two don't seem like they have one.
His greatest asset is being completely palatable to most of America. Also his job (even when he was in the military) and Chasten's job as a teacher don't lend themselves to people who would cause anything remotely close to a stir. The reason people won’t vote for women are: they think women are not tough, they will be intimidated and bullied by male foreign leaders and be unable to hold their own. They may even think the U.S. will be taken advantage of, or even attacked by misogynistic leaders of other countries. The women they know at work or home are either submissive or easily intimidated. Watching Hillary being stalked onstage by Trump didn’t reassure them. The U.S. is known to be militarily aggressive around the world. Will people be reassured by Elizabeth Warren as the head of the Armed Forces? What qualifications does she have for that, or to manage or even instigate a war if necessary?
Another reason is there are many passages in the Bible that say women are always inferior to men and specifically say women should never tell men what to do. Not at home, not at church and not in the public sphere. The Bible is very specific about that and Evangelicals don’t want any women in a position of power, ever. Even when Sarah Palin ran as VP, there was a lot of talk about it in Evangelical circles. The dilemma was, they knew she was a Dominionist and pro-life, and liked her personally, but thought her running was against the will of God. In the most evangelistic sects, women are not allowed to vote, or are only allowed to vote as directed by their husbands.
Higher turnout generally means Democrats win. Low turnout favors Republicans. Any woman candidate has to make up for a built-in deficit of votes. She has to make up for it by increased female turnout, or young people or some other group.
The fact that we know the Russians are going to interfere with the election, Trump has a hard core base of around 37%-40% that will never move, and that there will be a lot of voter suppression directed at minorities, means we may have a razor thin margin to begin with. Is it worth the risk? Look at what happens next if the gamble doesn’t pan out.
This may be an academic exercise. The only woman with a chance is Warren probably, and she’s not doing well in the polls. None of the women are doing as well in the polls as white men. Unless that changes, all the women may soon fade away.

[quote]How is a gay man palatable to most Americans when QUALIFIED women and minorities are not?
It's not about him being gay, it's about him being a white male. That trumps most things!
[quote]The same way that a dynamic black man was preferable to Hillary in 2008 and a nazi monster con man rapist was elected over Hillary Clinton in 2016. Hillary Clinton is not the problem. American's won't elect a woman.
Goodness! Can we make something clear? I don't want to seem like I'm quibbling over this particular but it's important.
3 million more people voted for Hillary Clinton than they did Donald Trump BUT they just didn't do it in the right areas for it to matter with our system of electing the President.
I will agree that America has a real problem with women.
[quote]But they won't elect a gay that doesn't do a minstrel show for them either.
Nobody thought they would elect Obama twice either and he didn't have the "benefit" of being white. I'd say he had a tougher hurtle to jump over than Pete has although Pete has other issues. The only conclusion you should draw from the last election is that many Americans don't give a damn about who is qualified and who isn't as long as they like the person. That was a negative with Trump and could be a positive here.
[quote]Pete doesn't even deserve to be president and can't possibly do better than Warren, Harris, Biden or even Bernie. Get real gays. He's a waste of energy and money. AND, he's homely. Back a longshot who should win. E Warren or B Saunders.
Let's make something clear: one of the things we should have learned from the last election is that the President is also elected based upon likability. Trump is a scum bag but the people that went to bat for him REALLY went to bat for him.
Elizabeth Warren is far more qualified than many of these other candidates but not enough people like her right now and she's not getting enough press coverage because of it!

I know that it won't do any good, but I'm going to say it anyway. It's not that Clinton was a woman, it's that some voters disliked her specifically. There are folks who either didn't vote for president at all, or who at the last minute decided that they would vote for Trump as the lesser of two evils, who would have voted for almost any other woman except Clinton. It was her specifically who turn them off.

None of the contenders have the guts to play hard, but Pete is in no position to even try. Boy doesn't have one sellable idea and a mountain of negative charm. Let's get serious.
Warren, Biden Or Bernie. There will be no other outcome. Not one of them is MY first choice. But Pete Buttgeiger is not even in the top 10. Get real. No, Hillary did not win. Is she in the White House? No. Because in the U.S., there’s such a thing as the electoral college. And Hillary knew there was an electoral college and she didn’t campaign in the states she had to win to beat Trump in the electoral college. Which was stupid beyond belief, especially for her, because she had a hands-on role in both of Bill’s campaigns and was right in the middle of all the campaign strategy. She probably had more campaign insider knowledge than anybody else, plus she had Bill who also understood campaign strategy very well. Bill warned her and she didn’t listen, they fought about it. It’s been reported.
A lot of Democratic candidates can win the millions of voters on the coasts. And if they don’t win the heartland, they’re going to lose and Trump will get a second term. The whole reason the electoral college was created to begin with was to force candidates to campaign outside their region, to people of every type of background. We might not like it, but it’s there. Hillary could have won by twenty million votes and if they were all on the coasts, she’d still lose.
Saying somebody “won” when they didn’t win is just irrational. Trump won the states she needed to win. That’s why he’s in the White House and she isn’t.
I’m sick to death of Democrats denying reality in favor of their candidate. Almost winning doesn’t count. And she knew Trump was an asshole, she should have tried harder for all our sakes.

Sorry, R343, but I’m just sick of the irrationality of people saying over and over that she “won.” She did not win. Not by the standards every candidate knew existed.
I’m concerned that Kamala in particular is going the same way. Yes, she can get the coasts in the general. But what is she doing or saying to appeal to the Midwest and white people in essential states? Reparations? I’m sure they’re going to love that in New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsyltucky.

I agree, but hopefully the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries will weed out the candidates who can't appeal to Midwesterners and white working-class voters. If Harris finishes no better than 5th or 6th in both Iowa and New Hampshire (behind Biden, Bernie, Buttigieg, Beto, and possibly Warren in NH and Klobuchar in Iowa), she won't be the nominee. It's hard to do poorly in both Iowa and N.H. and recover to become the nominee. Just ask Rudy Giuliani about 2008.
[quote] But what is she doing or saying to appeal to the Midwest and white people in essential states? Reparations? I’m sure they’re going to love that in New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsyltucky.
There seems to be a contingent of very vocal liberal intellectuals who are insistent that the 2020 election be a "national conversation" about social justice and identity politics -- reparations, white privilege, systemic racism, patriarchy, etc. If we can't find a way to get them to quiet down and and save some of their rhetoric for AFTER the election, they could turn what should be a slam-dunk win for the Democrats into 4 more years of Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | April 28, 2019 2:21 PM |
I’m afraid too much money is being spent in the early days on candidates that have no chance of winning. By the time we get a nominee, everyone’s campaign donation limit will be spent.
If you’re going to appeal to your minority base and ignore poor and middle class whites, you’re going to lose. That’s why white men are leading in every poll. The women and minorities get a lot of attention in the media because “the first” anything is newsworthy. That doesn’t mean those people are going to win. If whites don’t like their platform they’re through.
A lot of people seem to be unaware of the math here: non-Hispanic whites are 61.3% of the population. Including Hispanics, they are 76.9%. Blacks are 12.7%. Appeal to whites or you lose. It’s like little kids that want to eat dessert without eating the spinach first. Eat your vegetables, or no dessert.
As of July 2016:
“White Americans are the majority in every census-defined region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West) and in every state except Hawaii, but contribute the highest proportion of the population in the Midwestern United States, at 83%-85%. Non-Hispanic Whites make up 79% of the Midwest's population, the highest ratio of any region. However, 35% of White Americans (whether all White Americans or non-Hispanic/Latino only) live in the South, the most of any region.
Currently, 55% of the African American population lives in the South.”
So a lot of black voters live in red states they can’t swing.
This has a lot to do with Trump carrying the Midwest. He appealed in the worst possible way to whites’ fears. Industries being phased out, job loss, racism. If you’re competing against that, you better have something to offer those people that’s consistent with American values. If the only one paying attention is saying, “whites are supreme,” then you better find a way to say, “whites aren’t better than, but my plan helps them and they’ll be better off with me, not him.”
Reparations isn’t cutting it. No white majority state is going to think taking a bunch of money out of their pocket and giving it to a tiny minority in their state and mostly people in another state is going to help them.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | April 28, 2019 2:27 PM |
I think what’s really happening with all this reparations talk is that blacks are a significant minority in the primaries, but in the general a lot of them are in red states. So, they get a lot of attention in the primaries but can’t do as much to deliver states in the general.
Right now candidates are just putting ideas out there to hear applause. If they don’t win the heavily weighted white primary states in the beginning, they will be long gone before the blackest primaries.
A candidate that tailors his platform to the demographics has a better chance to win in the primaries and the general. Some of these candidates seem to be more worried about being cool than winning, and don’t seem to comprehend what it’s going to take to win.
by Anonymous | reply 348 | April 28, 2019 2:41 PM |
R347: Newsflash. Donation limits are separate for primaries and the general election. Once the primaries are over and the nominees are set, the donation limits reset. You people need to learn about what you're talking about before you open your mouths.

Harris will have incredibly high expectations in California among pundits. I'd say she needs an outright first or very close second as a bare minimum to continue afterwards. After Obama's win in Iowa the first time, and his decent showing in New Hampshire, she cannot possibly get away with blowing them off implying they're "white" states.

R337, I hate to tell you this but people know who he is outside of Datalounge and have for a while now.
From FiveThirtyEight
[quote]At first, I suspected that the “Buttigieg bump” was overblown — that the media was getting more interested in him, but actual voters mostly were not. But there’s actually good reason to believe that the interest in Buttigieg is pretty organic. He appears to have generated a lot of Google search interest relative to his media coverage and has attracted plenty of small donors.
People are just plain ole interested in the guy and so is the media. He's certainly gotten way more coverage than Warren and Harris.

R347 here. I meant, we now have candidates that are going to have to campaign for *a year and a half* in Iowa and New Hampshire. People have done that before, but it’s usually one or two guys, not 20.
How many people can afford to donate to multiple candidates for years? How many people are going to be so burned out between now and New Hampshire they’re just going to check out until the convention?
Then there’s the fact that with no actual voting happening, we don’t really know who’s going to wash out until either somebody makes a horrible faux pas, runs out of money or both. Meanwhile the RNC has a year and a half to dig up dirt.
At a certain point, people may throw up their hands and say, wake me up when it’s the convention. Then how are all these people who are campaigning endlessly in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina going to be able to pay for anything past Super Tuesday? Or be able to campaign in smaller and less critical states, when they have to blow their wad in New Hampshire because everybody else is doing it?
It’s like WWI trench warfare - years in the same trench with no progress.
My concern is, what has to happen for some of these people to drop out and narrow the field, when there’s no voting going on? Financing 20 campaigns isn’t sustainable.
by Anonymous | reply 357 | April 28, 2019 7:54 PM |
R356, I looked at that link it still implies that 64% of the people they spoke with had heard of him - even with 9 percent of them not liking him.
The only point of my post was to say that people outside of Datalounge do know who the guy is.
Also that says nothing of media mentions or rather the amount of airtime he's getting.
According to the same website you linked, support for him is currently trending over Harris and Warren and out of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada he's still ranked third behind Biden and Sanders among voters.
by Anonymous | reply 358 | April 28, 2019 8:02 PM |
So the early state people are more engaged. Not surprising because those are the people that get candidate visits.
Pete needs to try the 50 state strategy. People don’t know him, show up and talk policy. States that don’t often get visits will be flattered. He’s the underdog, he needs to work harder than anybody else. At least he’s young enough to do the marathon.
Biden and Bernie are so well known they’re killing the ability of others to be heard, and in the end I just have a strong feeling both their negatives are so bad they can’t win.
by Anonymous | reply 359 | April 28, 2019 8:08 PM |
Biden’s past is all there for want of a google. The Republicans won’t have to work hard to paint him as a fraud who pretends to be for the working class but legislated or voted against them again and again. Anita Hill, Crime bill, war mongerer, his draconian war on drugs, creation of office of Drug Czar. Mandatory sentences. No parole for drug felons. He has always had a hard on for pot and crack smokers. Not so much powder cocaine which was considered the white man’s drug of choice. It certainly was for his son Hunter. Daughter Ashley liked her pot. Both got caught. Didn’t do time. Hunter was discharged from the Navy two months in for testing positive for cocaine. Hunter’s business deals in Ukraine. And China. So much negative information out there. So I will gladly pick a horse. Warren. She’s everything he’s not. Thank Goddess.

As ABC stated :
[quote]"albeit with a decided tilt toward older voters that could define the party’s 2020 contest as a generational showdown."
Meaning most of these samples were over 50 (as the poll defines them). Meaning Pete is doing well even when older people are polled.
Also, re Biden vs. Sanders:
[quote]"Sanders struggled to win support from nonwhites in 2016, losing them to Hillary Clinton, 71-28 percent, in primaries in which exit polls were conducted. Today Biden leads Sanders among nonwhites overall by 16-10percent, including19-3percent among blacks (compared with a close 5-8percent among Hispanics)".
Takeaways:
*Biden is getting a big push from African-Americans despite Anita Hill and they are part of why he leads overall. This is surprising because there are two younger black Democrats running for office. Plus, this shows he can carry both the black vote and Midwest white independent vote.
*both Biden and Sanders are losing the Hispanic vote to someone else,or the alternative, the Hispanic vote is fragmenting between all the candidates where there is no clear choice. A 5% vs. 8% denotes a poor showing with Hispanics and does not bode well in Nevada,California, and Texas. This is actually great news for Pete (and everyone else not named Biden or Sanders)
*Mayor Pete is not doing that bad with older voters. He comes 3rd among them.

I keep wondering what his angle is. He must know it is a very, very steep hill to climb to get the nomination (I actually think it would be easier for him to win the election and the presidency.).
So what is this about? Name recognition before a Senate run? Is he hoping to make President in 2024? '28? (on the back of that name recognition, on socializing the country to a gay president, etc.)
He surely must think at a minimum he's the longest of shots. I love him. I think he's unique. I'd love this to happen but don't think it will, not this time.

If you listen to what he actually says, he says it’s a unique moment in history and a once in a lifetime chance (due to Trump blowing up the rule book). That explains it.
Assuming Pete is as much of a clean teen as he appears, everyone knew the most controversial thing about him right out of the starting gate. He’s gay and married to a man. People have a year and a half to get over it. Anybody that doesn’t get over it in that much time, wasn’t going to vote for a Democrat anyway.
It helps a lot that Chasten seems very kind and personable. He’s a regular schlub and gay at the same time. People could actually see him doing First Lady jobs and going on Ellen.

by Anonymous | reply 377 | April 28, 2019 11:14 PM |
R377, I think he is up against a more experience field when the issues of policy start to emerge. It's going to get tougher and he doesn't have the same level of experience. There will come a point in the process where the measures by which the public makes their choice start to change. It may not be that Pete fucks up, but it could be that someone strengthens. Maybe the economy tanks and Bernie or Warren start looking really good and centrists don't. "Events, dear boy, event..."
And the media is so determined to horse race this again. Like him or not, they flayed Biden right out of the official gate (which if you like him you found a bit much and if you don't you were delighted...) But that's the price of front runner at this stage, because there's not much else to report. I mean, except for practicality related to paying the bills, what does the amount of money a candidate raises have to do with the quality of that candidacy? Fuck all. But the media is babbling about how the fundraising is such an important measure of a candidate. So the day will come for Pete when the press starts fucking him up.
I don't think he's got no chance. I don't think I said that and if I did I didn't mean it. But I do think it's going to get a lot harder for him and a lot more difficult for his candidacy. This many competitors, this far out, it's a lot to get through.

by Anonymous | reply 384 | April 29, 2019 12:04 AM |
R381, I didn’t mean Chasten is a fabulous as Michelle, I meant he appeals to the same audience of fraus that like to watch morning shows and who care about children’s schools and all that sort of thing. Chasten is a teacher, he fits right in with the mommy fraus and their interests. He could also make veterans’ issues a personal issue, since Pete is a vet. The Obamas and Jill Biden founded a lot of nice organizations and holiday events for vets that Trump promptly threw out or ignored, they could start all that again and be good at it.
Michelle was a high powered lawyer, but she had to dumb it down a lot for the White House, and being smart, she did a really good job of it. Pretty much everything Michelle did, Chasten could take over or bring back in some fashion. Nutritious school lunches (he’s a teacher), the organic garden (loves to work with kids), etc.
Looks aren’t everything, especially for people who need help or validation and don’t care what package it comes in.
Try following Chasten on twitter, you see he’s very involved in being the First Gentleman, he’s not just somebody’s husband. And he has a job too, so he must really be cutting into his own free time. Good for him.

No sir, The Clintons are sociopaths because they're warmongers who wouldn't think twice to invade a sovereign nation, start a war then order bombings to kill civilians if that advances their careers. You don't need to support Republicans to see that. Ask Yugoslavians what they think of Bill and Hillary, or Syrians for that matter. See?
That being said, most politicians are sociopaths, including JFK (dictatorships in Latin America) or Obama, remember when he was going to shut down Guantanamo?
I fear for Pete, he seems genuine, but he did fight a war for oil corporations, so he might be another sociopath in the making. We'll see. So far I'm overlooking the veteran part.

by Anonymous | reply 429 | April 29, 2019 8:41 PM |
According to this article, Beto, Gillibrand and Kamala already met with him. So why is Pete the only one being criticized? I’m telling you, someone is trolling to try to change the narrative on Pete. He’s the only one getting attacked for things they all do, or for made up stories.
Here’s some excerpts from an article about it dated April 4.
A glimpse at the guest list for the Rev. Al Sharpton’s confab here this week would surely astonish any New Yorker arriving in a time machine from the 1980s. Every major Democrat who has launched a White House bid has cleared their schedule to get in front of the Reverend.
Few things once seemed more improbable, save perhaps for the White House being occupied by Donald Trump, who once competed with Sharpton for screaming tabloid headlines and airtime on what was then a nascent medium known as “trash TV.”
But today, Sharpton’s approval is sought by political candidates far and near. The crusades he launched decades ago against police abuse and racist enforcement of drug laws — back when his issues were widely denigrated as fringe and his look ran to velour tracksuits, giant gold medallions and a pompadour the size of Queens — are now central to the speeches of almost every Democratic 2020 hopeful.
However described, the shift has worked for him and his group, the National Action Network. In addition to its status as a must-stop for presidential hopefuls, the annual conference has become a who’s who of black political and thought leaders.
“No one wants to be on the negative end of his organization,” said Christina Greer, who teaches black ethnic politics at Fordham University in New York. “A lot of marginalized communities fundamentally see him as their voice,” Greer said. “When poor people can’t get an elected official to respond or call them back, they know Sharpton will. Not only will he call back, he will bring cameras.”
Candidates now publicly genuflect before him, as Beto O’Rourke did when the former Texas congressman took the stage soon after the conference got underway Wednesday.
After Sen. Kamala Harris of California launched her presidential bid, one of her first trips was to see Sharpton. She burnished her bona fides with black activists by dining with the reverend before a horde of cameras at Harlem’s power restaurant, Sylvia’s.
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand never forgets to call Sharpton on his birthday.

At the link there's at least 4 different candidates that have met with him in the past.
[quote]I’m telling you, someone is trolling to try to change the narrative on Pete. He’s the only one getting attacked for things they all do, or for made up stories.
No one is "trolling" him. People just seem to have a real problem with what happened in South Bend. That is truly the only thing that is haunting him. So people are paying more attention to his interactions with people of color because, as said tons of posts ago, it seems to get people clicking which just generates more rage which just continues the story.
by Anonymous | reply 432 | April 29, 2019 9:10 PM |
But what is all the “rage” about?
Pete hires a black police chief. Police chief illegally bugs some white cops and catches them making slurs against him on tape. Tape can’t be used because it’s illegal. FBI goes to Pete and tells him about the illegal taping. Pete fires police chief. Lawsuits in every direction by every party. Tapes are property of court now. Not even Pete has heard them.
Translates to: “Evil Racist Monster Pete Evil Evil Evil.” Every time he tries to do anything to clarify the facts he’s ignored. Every time he tries to reach out to the black community he’s ridiculed.
That is the essence of trolling.
by Anonymous | reply 433 | April 29, 2019 9:30 PM |

There is no malice or scandal here. And he is still interested in getting to the bottom of it. Move along. I'm not disagreeing with you. I heard him explain it and it made sense.
What he needs to do is get that word out in a forum where it is seen by people of color and then hopefully it will go away. It can be a televised interview with someone like Gayle King or Joy Reid etc. If he doesn't get ahead of it, it's going to keep coming up again and again.
It's the same way Elizabeth Warren handled the Native American situation only she issued an apology which was broadcast on every major news network and the majority of people finally stopped harping on it.

Some right-wingers are pushing the sexual assault story, and other right-wingers appear to doubt it.
[quote] The Medium article (about the alleged assault) began to gain attention on social media after it was pushed by fringe right-wing sites BigLeaguePolitics and Gateway Pundit, which is known for sharing unverified conspiracy theories and fake stories. Other questionable right-wing Twitter personalities, like David Wohl, whose son, Jacob Wohl, orchestrated a fake sexual assault accusation against Robert Mueller, have also been tweeting about the allegations.
[quote] Wohl and BigLeaguePolitics tweeted, “Uh oh: BREAKING: Media Darling Buttigieg Accused of Sexual Assault.”
(The above quote was referenced in r414.)

Because people like Congressman Lewis distort his civil rights record to suit their own agendas. I respect the hell out of the man but he did this when Hillary was running against Bernie. Said he was a fraud and was never a member of the civil rights movement because he never saw him at any protests. And then there was the photo on Bernie’s website of him at the student sit-in that he helped organize at the University of Chicago. Jonathan Capehart claimed it was someone else and Bernie was pulling a fast one and when the accusation was proved false Capehart never retracted his story or apologized. So this is why part of the reason he gets no traction in the south even though his surrogates are a much more diverse group.

In California black people voted in droves in 2008 when Obama was first running for President. Just that increase in black votes in California made the difference in passing Proposition 8 that blocked same-sex marriages. By and large, black church people are not always friendly to gays. You’d think they would be sensitive to civil rights struggles, but that didn’t seem to matter. I guess it’s a “we got ours, now you get yours” kind of thing.

r463 black people voting are ones that usually get dems elected especially in swing states and close elections. Fuck outta here with that.
r466 Ah yes the "blacks are not gays friends" rhetoric. And I know some white gays that reference that to affirm their preferences and pretty much be racist as fuck. So this is not ok. Will I acknowledge homophobia in the black community? yes. Has attitudes gotten better? Yes they have. And the black gays continue to fight for their visibility among their black community and gay community. Also yes I dislike black gay that trash the black community and praise the gay one. Then chase white boys.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | April 30, 2019 2:49 AM |
Let's not start this bullshit R463.
20% of Democratic voters are black and yes they are important.
Thinking they're not will lose you the election.
Out of eligible voters:
48% of Latinos voted last election. 59% percent of African Americans voted last election. 69% percent of white people voted last election.
And this is ignoring the fact that the census breaks Hispanic and Non-Hispanic black people into two separate categories.
[quote]By and large, black church people are not always friendly to gays. You’d think they would be sensitive to civil rights struggles, but that didn’t seem to matter. I guess it’s a “we got ours, now you get yours” kind of thing.
You'd think you'd know better than to turn to hatred to explain these things.
By and large white church people are not always friendly to gays.
Or maybe just (some) "church people" aren't friendly to gays.
Guess what? That knows no racial bounds! A homophobic church goer white or black just doesn't like gays, period!
You'd think you would realize that there are gay black people out there and gay latino people out there and that being gay is something that crosses races and sexes. When Pete is making appeals to religious people in the south he's not just talking to the white ones!

I’m not racist, but I’m a gay Californian and I was here then and I know what happened. I know certain apologists tried to make a counter argument that the black vote didn’t pass Prop 8. But in a normal black turn-out year Prop 8 would not have passed. That’s clear from the numbers and it was reported that way at the time. We’re more than ten years past this now and I hope attitudes have evolved in a better direction. Pathetic that some old white men of DL must frame even Mayor Pete's failure to launch as a race issue.
Give it a rest gramps. You'd still have blacks at separate water fountains if you ruled. White men, all old white men, are at heart racist and conservative. Ancient white gay men have to vote differently to protect free access to their back hole.

Latino men & latino women??
Who made that chart?
by Anonymous | reply 481 | April 30, 2019 4:05 AM |
Black people overwhelmingly vote Democrat, specifically Hillary Clinton in 2016. Even religious black people. But 78% of white evangelical protestants voted for Trump. They represent one in five of all voters. Of course the majority of both white men and women voted for Donald. 88% percent of Trump voters are white. 60% for Clinton. Got it? Right.

More polls coming out (CNN and Morning Consult) showing Pete is really not connecting with black voters. Are there any more black people he can do photo ops with?
by Anonymous | reply 490 | April 30, 2019 4:56 PM |
He’s really not connecting with black voters because there’s tons of people on social media, claiming to be black, who say he’s a racist and they hate him.
This is not based on any reality, but I guess if you’re a Russian, a Republican, brainless, or just hate white people, random people on the internet making up shit is good enough.
This really makes me angry, because people are doing a hatchet job on Pete, and idiots blindly believing them and passing it on isn’t going to end with Pete.
Next thing you know, Republican women are going to come out of the woodwork saying Biden raped them or went around lynching people in his spare time as a youth. When these people aren’t decisively shut down, they get encouragement and go even farther.
People need to hit back and they need to be reported and exposed. And the people who just love lies and propaganda about other people’s candidates, need to take it down and quit going along with it and promoting it. That’s how the Russians worked last time. Throw it out there, some dummy will pick it up. Pete is not the last person they're going to do that to.

Ok, so since you're saying he has low support with black people because of fake social media accounts. You then say that people with the above characteristics would be swayed by fake social media. Therefore, you're saying that the black voters who don't support Pete either hate white people, are brainless, or are Republicans?

R;92, no, I’m saying there are some dumb sheep that are easily led by these fake accounts. People take this stuff on board and pass it to the next person like a game of telephone.
Then the message isn’t coming from Ivan Shit-Stirrer, it’s coming from your neighbor. Then you have people in the black community who read the neighbor says this, or an admired black entertainer (or Susan Sarandon) that is also a political idiot picks it up, and they think, my idol X says Pete is a racist, and I love X so it must be true.
Now you have people from the top to the bottom of the black community mindlessly parroting this shit. And for some black people, if another black person says it, it’s true. Don’t tell me any facts, X says so and that’s it. The end.
Don’t believe me, open twitter some time. God knows what’s on Facebook, it’s probably even worse.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | April 30, 2019 7:11 PM |

Politico's summary of his tax returns
[quote] Buttigieg's tax returns show that he has made six-figure salaries in recent years, but they place him among the least wealthy Democrats running for president in 2020. In 2018, Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, a teacher, earned just over $152,000. The pair paid about $20,000 in federal taxes — an effective tax rate of 13.2 percent, the documents show.

Will no one talk about his stance on vaccination? I thought this could be his equivalent to Sander's prisoner's voting rights. He says he's in favor of religious exemption on vaccination. He apparently already changed his mind, but what was he thinking?
by Anonymous | reply 533 | May 2, 2019 9:43 AM |
I’m not sure that’s what he said. A spokesman said something like that, but they backtracked and said that’s not what he meant.
The retraction said a certain number of states did allow religious exemptions, and vaccinations at this time are regulated by the states. They’re now saying he was referring to existing law.
So I don’t know if he was misquoted or they backtracked on policy. People were furious, with good reason.

They also show the house, which is beautifully restored.

by Anonymous | reply 563 | May 3, 2019 4:21 AM |
R562, read Chasten’s Washington Post interview of May 1. He did talk about it.
“Chasten told his family last. Scared he wouldn’t keep his nerve to say the words out loud, he sat his parents down in the living room and passed them a letter. “I remember my mom crying,” he says, “and the first thing she asked me was if I was sick. I think she meant, like, did I have AIDS?”
“A stalemate took hold of the house. There was a lot of silence, Chasten says, but he remembers hearing one of his brothers utter, “No brother of mine …”
“Chasten packed his bags. “I felt like I just could not be there,” he says. “So, I left.”
[...] “Those were the kind of voices Chasten had been trying to escape the day he left home. He brought his bags to a friend’s apartment, then bounced around on people’s couches, trying not to wear out his welcome. Sometimes he slept in his car at the far edge of the parking lot of the community college where he was taking classes.
“After a few months, his phone rang while he was driving. The caller ID said “Mom.”
“She said, ‘Will you come home?’ ” Chasten says. “And I cried and I went home immediately.”
“The next conversation with his parents about his sexuality went better than the first, and Terry and Sherri embraced their son. Eventually, they would proudly walk him down the aisle at his wedding to another man.
“Reconciling with Rhyan and Dustin did not come so easily. “We never got over it,” the youngest Glezman brother says, crystal blue eyes cast toward the ground.
Rhyan Glezman, now the pastor of a Christian church in Clio, Mich., says Chasten’s coming out was not a surprise and that he still loves his youngest brother. “I want the best for him,” Rhyan says. “I just don’t support the gay lifestyle.”

Where does Chasten say that he wants his brother's approval? I mean yes, he wanted his brother's approval when he came out. Democratic feminists are strongly pushing for a woman candidate for 2020. They had their chance for a woman last time but support for that was weaker even with a highly qualified candidate. The time for a woman will no doubt come around again, but in 2020 it’s crucial that Democrats choose the strongest candidate possible to unseat our current loathsome POTUS. Who that is may be uncertain right now. The first primaries and caucuses are still about a year away, so it’s still early to narrow the field.

I think Warren and Harris are both tough and qualified. Right now I think a lot of people want to go with proven and familiar...Biden.

Klobuchar has all the grit of a poorly made Minnesota Hot Dish.
Tater-tots could not save her.

I'd say Kamala Harris has definitely the chops to handle any type of opponent. She also has the smarts and the charisma to do the job. As of now Mayor Pete will get my vote for just one reason: He seems to have a vision for his presidency and very specific concepts on issues that are important to me. Harris is not that well rounded on as many topics as Buttigieg is. He also is the only one from the entire group who gets me the feeling that Trump is finally old news, and someone is ready to move forward. Everybody else is still too focused on Trump.

Harris seems to attract the "fierce black diva" fans, or those who are quaking in fear that blacks will only vote for a black candidate. Non-black voters in states like Florida do NOT want to have "conversations about reparations."

I still feel he’s the best candidate

Probably Trump. The military is so full of hate-filled bigots, they won’t care if Pete served. They’ll just assume having a four-year-long Klan rally in the White House is better than anything Pete could ever do.
I’m so sick of people that refuse to think about anything but themselves. The U.S. is going to turn into Northern Ireland at its worst if someone doesn’t stop all this extreme tribalism.

The Fake President said he got 10% raises for people in the military, the first raise they'd had in 10 years.
Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines know they've been getting 1-2% raises every year for as long as they've been serving. They know he's using them, and he's not honorable.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
