JEZEBEL: Alanis Morissette is actually kind of shit
The article was published last month, but it seems it was not discussed here at the time.
In short, the story is this: the writer likes to re-listen the classics of her youth in the 1990s and introduce them to her daughter. She loved Alanis Morissette at the time, so she tried to listen to "Jagged Little Pill" again recently. But she began to find the music primitive, and the lyrics dumb.
On Twitter, there was a backlash against the article, as almost always happens in those cases, led mostly by men who must think it's "woke" to defend a woman's talents against this kind of criticism, and doubly woke that they were defending her against a feminist magazine.
But, in my view, the article is right. I like Alanis' songs and, unlike the writer, I do want my guitars to be guitarry. But her lyrics are another story. It is hard to accept that "You oughta know" was ever considered a feminist anthem. It looks more like a misogynistic parody of an "obsessive ex-girlfriend" type. Just imagine a woman screaming, "Do you think of me when you fuck her???" in this day and age.

So much of the music from that era sounds indistinguishable from eachother. Jagged Little Pill was OK. It was Morissette's later work that convinced me that she had talent.

It's interesting, this war flamed for a couple of days on social media but went completely unnoticed by DL.
Seems like people are mixed on her here, just like everywhere else. I'm leaning positive myself.

If it's an article on Jezebel, it's shit.

I still love Jagged Little Pill. It still holds up.

It’s a campy riot. It’s the “No wire hangers!” of pop music and I love every second of it.
Share it with your kid or don’t share it with your kid, I don’t care.

Alanis' stupid 'List Songs' are dumb. She couldn't blend a metaphor to save her life.

I still like the album, but the article is correct. I even thought so at the time. It’s riot girlie, feminism-lite, an easily digestible version for the masses. And “Ironic” is ridiculous, not just for the completely lack of understanding of irony.
I’ll defend “You Outta Know” though. That’s a classic fuck you breakup song.

I liked “You Oughta Know”. Everything else was too boring to bother with.

What's the deal with trashing talented women when they suddenly aren't young and trendy anymore?

I knew it was shit back in the 90s.

Alanis has never been a favorite of mine, just not my type of music. However, I'll take anything the cunts at Jezehell say with a grain of salt. In their eyes, Nicki Minaj is the height of lyrical brilliance and sophistication. It's amusing to see them twist into pretzels to avoid criticizing her, even for fucking a sex offender and defending her kiddie toucher brother . I thought that Jezebel thought of rape as The Worst Thing Ever, Like Worse Than the Holocaust. I guess the victims must not have been white hipster college girls, lol.

Jezebel is the worst. I'm glad they have no shred of relevance these days.

The article was more tedious than anything Alanis will ever record.
Many people were aware at the time that JLP was just the mass market version of The Breeders, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, etc but it had its limited charms nevertheless. Do we really need a think piece every time someone decides they no longer like an album from their 20s?

Who in their right mind would blast some dumb ass Alanis Morrissette album to their toddler? So narcissistic to expect any appreciative reaction from that. And she goes on and on about how apeshit she was for JLP at age12 but shits on it now and gets to cut a check for her boring as hell recollections and current assessment of an album of songs written by a 20 year old at the time.

“Uninvited” and “Thank You” are a cut above the rest of her tracks. She was ubiquitous on radio and television for years, but I don’t think anyone considered her an innovator. She was a pop-rock writer with an amazing voice. It is difficult to wail like that, almost yodel, and have it not be irritating.

She’s the Def Leppard of feminist rock: fun in high school, embarrassing to listen to now.

Don’t tell me this is worse than Britney or Christina, because that’s the kind of shit that replaced her on the charts.

It's not shit but it's a bit overrated.
The other thing is for many of us Canadians, we knew Alanis as the pop star. The pop star who did a few videos with Matt Leblanc before he hit it big with Friends.
We didn't truly buy that she was this pissed-off rocker. But it's a good album. You Learn is a great song.

I'm in my fifties, and I'm not embarrassed to listen to either Def Leppard OR Alanis.

An amazing singer? Compared to whom? Britney? Rihanna?
Lyrics were shitty. She had a very annoying way of singing.
Her crappy bubblegum pop prior to her metamorphosis was better.

Eww, the author is one of those dipshits who makes statements as a question "Jagged Little Pill is Actually Really Bad?? ". I lose all respect for people who do that. They don't even have enough backbone to make a definitive statement . Posting a negative review over a 20 year old album you bought a Target? What a dumb cunt .

I LOVE Alanis but JLP is total shit! Completely overrated.
She did much better work on Flavors of Entanglement and Bright Lights and Havoc.
I'm hoping she comes out with something new soon.
