She’s been on the air 15 years now, and is complete cunt behind the camera. Why is nobody speaking up?
Why has nobody written an expose on Ellen?

She's a women doing an incredible job. Just because she isn't 'on' off screen, doesn't justify being called 'cunt'. She's an employer of many people and heads a company earning a lot of money. Needless to say she's entertaining and inspiring countless of people across the globe.
I've worked in hospitality and education my whole life. It is absolutely exhausting being 'on' all day at work.
Give the women a break, and get the fuck over your damn self.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 20, 2019 11:05 AM |
R2, she is a mean drunk and ,indeed, a cunt. It has nothing to do with being "on".
OP, the answer is that the gossip rags that would publish such a story will not publish anything that their readers do not want to hear. Their readers love Ellen and don't want to hear anything bad about her; so, nothing gets published.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 20, 2019 11:10 AM |
She is hiding in plain sight. You can tell on her show that underneath her faux good natured demeanor there’s a deeply unhappy, almost sadistic woman. You can see it in her eyes and in her low grade aggression towards guests.

No one can do a daily "happy, happy, up with people" grind for that many years without it taking its toll. Maybe she's not a cunt, maybe she's exhausted from having to fake a party every fucking day.
It would be like becoming deeply sick of your favorite candy from having to eat nothing but that every day for years .
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 20, 2019 11:29 AM |
She's clearly passive aggressive and sometimes vicious but I don't know if she's a cunt.
Even though people knew Rosie was an awful human being, the media ignore that too. Ellen's day is coming for an expose. I'm sure her employees sign an ironclad NDA.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 20, 2019 11:33 AM |
Did anyone report on what a monster Rosie O’Donnell was during her show’s run, before The View?
And did anyone ever report on how horrible Johnny Carson was, or did we first/only hear it from Joan Rivers after he had her blacklisted?
Think of all the people (men) with talk shows. How much do we hear about what goes on backstage? Nothing, ever, it seems to me. If, say, Jimmy Fallon or Colbert were “mean drunks,” would that info be reported? Would they be seen as “cunts,” or would they be running their shows?

Another reason Oprah was smarter than everyone else. Even when they did heavy topics, her TV peers from Ricki Lake to Geraldo to Jenny Jones always had a giddy ringmaster vibe. Oprah balanced her maniacal giveaways and fawning celebrity episodes with heavy topics, literature, spiritualism, etc., and she didn’t address those in an upbeat circus type of way. I do believe that taking on the responsibility of pretending to be happy not only for an hour every day but expected to behave that way off camera as well could drive a person to rageful madness.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 20, 2019 12:27 PM |
E.g. I read a story here on dl that a friend of a poster worked at her house for a while and that she quit early, because she found it wasn't worth it, to endure her. Also someone else e.g. said she knew her from her time before she was famous in lesbian circles in New Orleans or somewhere, and that she found her very unpleasant. There will be many people who encountered her, who found her unpleasant, doesn't have much to do with her having to be cheerful for her show, no one expects her to even be often on outside of it, various accounts online that she seems to be unpleasant, not excusable with the show.

I don't think Ellen is funny or the least bit entertaining, charismatic, talented or engaging, I can't see her appeal? At all? I do, however, think it was cruel the way she was treated when she came out, no one deserves that. Perhaps that's the root of her cuntery?

I think she continues doing her show because she genuinely believes it makes people's lives better. And I'm sure it does.
I can see her leaving the show at 65 years of age. It would be too much for her. She can then still do projects and spend time at home with Portia and the animals.
I watched recently and she doesn't dance at the beginning like she used to. Twitch does that. I've also noticed guest hosts popping up now and then.

The humility that she had at the start of the show's run is gone. She now LOVES to be friends with celebrities. She also loves playing those stupid games that embarrass people and laughs hysterically at them. She comes across as a mean-spirited, entitled person now. Stopped watching after the endless shows about her star-studded birthday party.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 20, 2019 2:54 PM |
She is playing a role like anyone in front of a camera, whether they’re actors, talk show hosts or journalists. We know actors act. If we don’t know news anchors are performers, then we are stupid: Matt Lauer is an abusive asshole; Brian Williams lies/exaggerates; Katie Couric lied and then blamed her PA for having written a lie about her personal history that she read as if it were her personal history. Barbara Walters was conniving, Rosie O’Donnell is an abusive narcissist martyr; Johnny Carson was a vindictive asshole; Whoopi Goldberg is an opportunist whose values adjust on a sliding scale according to how friendly she is with any given accused person.
Anyone who chooses to spend his or her life sitting in the literal spotlight and talking at cameras is likely to be a dick. Why focus on Ellen DeGeneres specifically and ignore everyone else?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 20, 2019 2:57 PM |
I get the impression Ellen doesn't like being gay, resents it and is uncomfortable with herself, still. She often looks quite awkward when interviewing attractive women. I think she suffers internalised homophobia and she takes it out on everyone around her. I also think she wishes she were a man (like most lesbians). I imagine she abuses Portia and that Portia take it because she has low self esteem and issues of her own, some kind of twisted sadomachochist ideation that she only associates pain with love. Either that, or Portia is the ONLY person Ellen is civil and nice too...besides Oprah.

R40 Most lesbians want to be men? You sound like you’re straight out of 1953. That is not accurate at all. For the very small number who first identify as gay and then transition, they’re trans, not lesbians. Butch lesbians don’t have gender dysphoria.
Ellen is a narcissist and doesn’t really care about people. She complained about having to be nice in that stupid self-serving New Yorker article but why should we feel sorry for her when she makes $100 million a year from her talk show and could choose to retire and fade to get more privacy at any moment? She doesn’t want to lose the attention!!! Thus, I don’t feel bad for her. She’s choosing this.
I hope someone does expose her eventually (with a bit more impact than Kathy Griffin’s mention in her book), but to be fair, all talkshow jackasses should be shown for what they are.

Ellen is getting old and part of her persona is someone who is perpetually young. She also runs a TV show and has power to make or break other projects.
If she was rapey like Weinstein, I'm sure there would be rumors. If she were an outright bully like Rosie, direct stories about her aggressive meltdowns would have come out as well.
She appears on her show to be someone who has a cruel streak with a limited tolerance for fools. But also she does not seem to like people very much - which includes celebrities once the charm and novelty wears off. From her very first mosquito bit she has always struck me as a profoundly depressed individual who is seeking out something mildly amusing to distract her from how awful things feel. Even if she doesn't inspire in any way, her process really resonates with a lot of people. The fact her comedy as a mask for misery isn't a flaw, its a feature. Her short attention span approach to making stars out of youtube sensations really plays into this approach to entertainment as a mild distraction from stress and misery.

Comics are a strange bunch. They're never what you expect.
Ellen, at this time, was kinda shy and quiet. Not friendly at all. Still not out.
And yes, Martin Short is a douche. I've never met Wanda but love her work. She should be bigger.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 20, 2019 5:22 PM |
My ex was a manager in LA, worked with lots of celebrities, especially comedians. It's true what the posters above have said -- comedians are about the angriest people you could ever meet. That's usually what drives their comedy (Oddly, Don Rickles, the mean comedian, was one of the nicest people you could meet. Another incredibly nice one was Phyllis Diller -- but those are names that mean nothing here at DL).
Ellen is indeed an extremely angry person -- but not always a mean one -- in other words, you can run afoul of her temper at any moment, but you might also end up the recipient of a lovely gift as well. Her anger isn't constant, it fluctuates like the weather, and there's no accurate forecast for what's coming. A friend of my ex's who worked on the set said that Ellen screamed at him several times for no reason at all, in front of the entire crew, and several other times was extremely kind. And as far as Portia goes, well, Portia is actually quite nice and puts up with it all for several reasons, most of which you could easily guess. And, I suspect she does love Ellen. And Ellen probably loves her, as much as an angry person can love another.
But an expose? There isn't enough there -- she's an angry gay comedian. Who's going to really care?

Comics are a weird bunch. I know a few of them casually and they seem to have zero self-esteem. If they bomb one night, they'll think about quitting the business or think everyone hates them even if you point out that they killed with the exact same set just last week. I'm an actor (mostly on stage), so I've seen how audiences can vary from night to night and performance to performance. You can't take it personally if you really land a joke on Tuesday that has the audience rolling for 5 minutes and that same joke with the same delivery gets nothing but a polite chuckle on Wednesday. Comics take that super personally.
I haven't dug too deep into it, but it seems like just about every comic I know is like that. Maybe they need to know they brought people joy or maybe they need it for their own egos. I don't know. Ellen doesn't strike me as much different from any of the comics I know. I'm sure she's an angry and sad person and I can't imagine having to pretend to be every housewife's little ray of sunshine every day.

I like her standup comedy. She is goofy and inoffensive. I don’t enjoy or watch her talk show because it’s formulaic and corny like all talk shows are, but I think she was a good comedy writer and performer. Like all comics, she has a persona that isn’t representative of every part of her real personality. The difference is that Sarah Silverman and other profane and offensive comics get credit for being not entirely assholes in real life, but their opposite—Ellen, Rosie, people who act like Care Bears—are penalized for having negative attributes, even though all people do.

What. You think Jimmy Kimmel should be the most powerful lesbian in all media?
She isn't even that far off from her persona. It has definitely cooled between Finding Nemo and Dory. But the only thing that really seems to have come out about her as a disappointment is that she is not approachable (turns out she was always kind of an introvert) and she has lost her temper before (but not in a way that deserves to be categorized as similar to Rosie who made a habit of terrorizing people. Also, Rosie does not deserve to be in the same category as Weinstein or Lauer who sexually harassed people.) Her ex-girlfriend had a drug fueled meltdown that did not result in death. Her current wife has survived an eating disorder which she appears to have some control over now. That is pretty standard for lesbians.

There have been a few articles that imply that she is less than friendly. But none have torn her to shreds.
NYT wrote one, and one of the magazines - Vanity Fair, or New York - wrote one that wasn't quite an expose but was more incisive than the usual People/Us/Entertainment Weekly claptrap.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | April 20, 2019 10:44 PM |
If that blind items is the worst people can come up with there is no material for an expose!

R11 I think Fallon just gets hyped up when he is trying to keep the attention of his live audience.
He did this interview with Michael Che at a club recently and he was much more chill as there was no live audience present.

She is A-List in lesbo circles but her comedy is weak, she can’t act, sing or dance. Nor is she smart, shilling for small homophobic creeps like Kevin Hart. She is the Merv Griffin of her time and I want a divorce.

[quote] someone who has a cruel streak with a limited tolerance for fools. But also she does not seem to like people very much - which includes celebrities once the charm and novelty wears off...a profoundly depressed individual who is seeking out something mildly amusing to distract her from how awful things feel. Even if she doesn't inspire in any way, her process really resonates with a lot of people.

Vintage gossip: “Degeneres, Ellen. "Very nice to the crew on her new talk show." Openly gay. Linked with Anne Heche, KD Lang and Martha Stewart. Some have said she is difficult to work with.”
“Carson, Johnny. Jury is still out on whether he is a manipulative, cold, creepy jerk, or simply a clueless and stupid innocent who was overly-well-protected by his handlers. Wife-beater. Hires working girls to sit on his lap and call him "Daddie." Denies the existence of his biracial granddaughter. Alcoholic. Linked with Ann-Margaret, Angie Dickinson, Morgan Fairchild, Sally Field, and Mamie Van Doren.”

[quote]Other than vague references on DL to Ellen being "mean", I don't believe I've ever heard any specific examples of her meanness.
During the TV writers' strike in 2007, one of her show's writers contributed to a blog (industry blog maybe? Can't recall) with his/her experiences on the set. There were stories of the explosive temper, coldness and cheapness -- specific stories, but the only one I can remember is that one year's Christmas present/bonus for the staff was a low denomination AMEX gift card she likely got for free since she's their spokesperson.

I read this biography recently about Johnny Carson (same title) by Henry Bushkin, Carson's former attorney. Should be available at the library. It was interesting. Book did not get into whether Carson was a wife beater, but Carson did sound like an unhappy and unpleasant person.

I find it incredibly annoying when someone who owns a $50 million house asks people to contribute money to charities. Who needs a $50 million house? Get a $5 million house and donate the rest to the charity yourself, rather than begging some minimum wage person to sacrifice.

R125 this is an interview that Joan Rivers did with Bushkin. Carson wouldn't have been chosen as a host by NBC in modern times. They want hosts now who appear to be happy husbands/dads.

R140 / R136 - It's so funny, I know firsthand that Ellen can be a cold, cruel, nightmare to work opposite (with only occasional sunny periods), but I've not heard the same about Marty Short. He's always dubbed the nicest guy in Hollywood / the comedian 'who's laughing on the inside' and seems to be BELOVED. At least according to the PR. Perhaps he's been hanging/touring with longtime buddy Steve Martin too long and beginning to believe his own legendary status? His talk show appearances are generally peerless -- with him playing into every smarmy, schmaltzy showbiz cliche there is. But maybe it's not so far removed from how he really views himself??

The stories always go like this, “Ellen, known as daytime TV’s queen of nice, giveaways and playful pranks, has another side: she isn’t always agreeable, and she has been known to have a temper.”
In other words, she’s a human being.

Please don't compare Ellen and Oprah. Despite her trashy early days of television and her superficial giving away of useless expensive merchandise, Oprah did a lot of meaningful television that provoked discussion and social change. Ellen is just a talentless fool, Oprah is a humanitarian whether you believe it or not, she may have done it for ratings but she did it nonetheless, there is some genuine heart and feeling there, Ellen never.

You can't say Oprah hasn't done some good.
Remember the man with HIV who went swimming in his local pool and the whole community vilified him, so Oprah took her cameras to the town and confronted them?
Or the 200 men she had in her audience talking about their childhood sexual abuse?
The fallout of the Ellen coming out show Oprah did and her stance on gay rights?
The policeman who told kidnap/rape victims to never, ever let your abuser take you to a second location (the premise being you'd be killed) and the subsequent shows telling the stories of victims who were only alive because they implemented that information?
The woman who was being bashed by her husband but told Oprah he loved her, Oprah's rebuttal being; 'but love doesn't hurt.'?
And, while corny and overused, (but no less true) Maya Angelou's; 'If someone shows you who they are, believe them.'
These are just the ones I remember (and I have certainly put the last one to good use!). Yes, sometimes her goodwill was borne from a tremendous ego and a need for adulation and ratings, and she's certainly not the saint or martyr she's made out to be, but you can't deny Oprah's show made a difference.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | April 21, 2019 11:56 AM |
Oprah’s show landed on a few themes ultimately: social issues, self-help, spirituality, giveaways, celebrity worship.
Over time, other daytime talk shows mostly gave up the social issues aspect, and they never got into self-help (aside from dieting, makeovers and basic health trends 101) or spirituality. They don’t go there. They stick with celeb promotions, the occasional human interest story, comedy, and corny house band stuff.

It's not just Ellen, it's most, if not all successful celebrities. There's a coordinated effort, by who or what organizations, I do not know, that controls the narrative on what is reported about celebrities. See Charlize and her daughter; 3 plus years of her dressing him in the opposite genders clothing and not one mainstream media has ever reported on it. Not TMZ, not entertainment tonight, not extra, not one of them. We only get the news approved by whomever is in control wants reported.

It is my belief that no one in the entertainment industry or public life is really as they purport themselves to be. I was shocked to hear a friend who worked for Olivia Newton John in Australia tell me that Olivia is awful to her staff and doesn't pay them the award rate of pay or superannuation (a compulsory government pension). We live in a very false world.

R147 but Ellen and people like Fallon are ENTERTAINERS. It was never their intention to have deep, society-changing discussions on their shows.
They are just offering light entertainment which some people like. That is what is great about all the choices today. People can choose to watch or not watch what they want.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | April 21, 2019 3:00 PM |
Op asks, "Why is nobody speaking up about Ellen?" which is followed by numerous posts discussing how much of a cunt Ellen is. I think the answer is that your assumption is incorrect and that people have been talking about it for a while now.

by Anonymous | reply 167 | April 21, 2019 4:22 PM |
Ellen raising her voice or withdrawing from strangers and people she doesn't really like appears to be the closest thing we have to a hard hitting newsworthy 'bad' side.
The fact she is female of course makes those things terrible. If she were also fat she would be evil personified.
But her behavior is well within the norm for the nicest of male hollywood A-listers.
She will probably take a break from her show at some point and then decide if she wants to reinvent herself as a sweetly dotty old lady or not. Her need for validation through work will drive her to some sort of comeback -- and her ability to play her real self so close to the vest will allow her to pull off her reinvention as a goofy old lady. Being a slightly bitter introvert has made it possible for her to keep her affable goofball persona going for decades. She has also benefitted from her choice of that as her comedy persona because it has aged much better than all those comics who had to scream or be outrageous to get attention back when stand up was king.
All of the personas that stand up comics create are personal -- but none of them are actually real. The whole point is to trick the audience into knowing instantly who they are supposed to believe you are - because familiarity is required for a lot of comedy to land. It has nothing to do with presenting yourself the same way you would to your therapist. The persona is something designed to feel like truth for the audience so you can have a foundation for launching your jokes.
