The hair is almost a work of art. Terrible that she died so young.
In the 1960s and 1970s she was very stunning. Her features were not the most conventionally beautiful, but at her peak show she glowed, great hair and smile. She had bad taste in men (they might have been hot but were either awful, abusive people or just bad for her) and then drugs started taking over her and began looking rough. She was starting to look a bit worn in that clip.
She really had a great career resurgence after most totally wrote her off and got taking seriously as an actress for a while. It's too bad many people today only remember her for Charlie's Angels (although I love that show), her later life which a bit of a mess and sad illness and death.

I never thought she was beautiful at all. Striking yes, and let's face it her blonde iconic 70s flick became sensational, but other than that she was not a beauty. Right time and place. So often the case.

Re watching the start of CA on ME TV and yes she was magic. Sassy and she had that look. Kate used to call her Teeth and Hair. Amazing there were no catfights that 1st season of CA even though Farrah was the obvious break out star.

You know, God love ya, you're entitled to your opinion but Farrah didn't need a lion's mane of hair to be beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 19, 2019 8:55 AM |
Still very much a beauty at 40 years old. It's not only he hair and smile. Farrah had a beautiful body, lovely speaking voice, pretty green eyes and and a natural sexiness. She wasn't "classically" beautiful, but she is STILL one of the memorable beauties of the seventies and eighties.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 19, 2019 9:13 AM |
I don't think she was white trash at all. Lean and gleaming, natural and alive. She was a sweet person by all accounts. Just a gorgeous creature.

From Wikipedia:
she attended the University of Texas, where she studied microbiology before switching her major to art
I guess she had some brains too. Microbiology is a pretty tough major.
Did any of the angels graduate college? Farrah seems to have left after three years since agents were calling and wanted her to come to LA.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 19, 2019 9:20 AM |
She was the perfect look for the times. By the end of the seventies the fitness boom was happening - and those angels girls all looked fit and squeaky clean and natural - yet managed by be ridiculously beautiful - and sexy! Lean, fit bodies. Glowing skin, lustrous hair, perfect white teeth - they aced it! Models like Lauren Hutton and Cheryl Tiegs had it too.
Of course - the hair - especially farrah’s flick - had to be touseled and sprayed between each take to look so naturally perfect - but that’s the magic of film & tv ;)
Mind you - Farrah guested as a love interest of Larry hagman or his astronaut buddy/sidekick late in the run of I dream of Jeannie years before CA - and she had that late sixties helmet-ey, slightly bouffant do - and was still a knockout. She was lovely.
I read somewhere years ago that when she was a teenager (think it was in corpus Christie in Texas?) - that kids from school would literally follow her home when school was out - and hang around after she went in - just hoping to get a glimpse of her. She was apparently even more compelling in the flesh and people just delighted in looking at her. That’s before the makeup and all the elaborate hair remember - so she really had that star quality/factor X most of her life...
Such a gorgeous woman.

R14 again - vaguely remember a comment made by a pundit years ago - probably not long after the time of CA and farrah’s huge fame - along the lines of how she/they made being healthy - sexy!
This was no mean feat after decades and decades of fashionable, sexually desirable female icons being delicate, painted dolls or pale, aristocratic languid types. It seemed Farrah was without artifice in comparison - just glowed with health and vitality - fit and active! So sexy! And Seemingly no artificial packaging. A revelation.

Listen up, she got anal cancer from hpv. In fact the foundation that bears her name is aiding in research to find a cure for hpv related cancers. Men who bottom have a much higher rate of anal cancer than men in general. Make sure a screening for anal warts (which are caused by hpv and may lead to cancer) is part of your regular check up. You won't necessarily know you have them if they're up far enough.

Ryan O'Neal has her Warhol on the market for 19 million dollars. The other one is at the University of Texas with Farrah's archives. She left all her artwork to them. Farrah was quite talented as an artist and sculptor.
I love Farrah's Warhol. She looks scared and a little tough. Her eyes are the star, not her hair. She looks modern. I think it's one of his better ones to be honest, though they are just silkscreened polaroids. Anyway I digress. Ryan O'Neal didn't love Farrah, he isn't capable of loving anyone. Farrah Fawcett, the former Charlie's Angel and pin-up model who passed away on June 25 after a long fight with cancer, was a member of Delta Delta Delta (Tri-Delta) Sorority.
Sorority members at the University of Texas at Austin, where Fawcett was an undergraduate in 1966, mourned the passing of their fellow sister on the day of her private funeral in Los Angeles, CA.
Delta Delta Delta, one of the largest women's organizations in the world, was founded in 1888 at Boston University.

Farrah went to the same hair place as my mom. They would insert little metal rods in your head and attach real hair mixed in with your own. It was crazy expensive in the 80s and adjusted every 6 weeks or so
BTW, her looks weren't ruined by sun damage but hideous plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 20, 2019 5:04 AM |
How quickly it can all change; Farrah was huge and left the show to do movies. But she couldn't act.
Kate can act but the show wouldn't let her out to do Kramer vs. Kramer.
CA hit #1 in its second season with Cheryl Ladd (a feat it didn't accomplish in season one)
The iconic shot, for me, in those opening credits is that turn Jaclyn gives where we only see one eye.

Farrah claimed to never had any formal acting training. There were rumors she took some specialized classes though at HB Studio in the 80s before she decided to go the serious actor route.
She got some rave reviews for The Burning Bed, Extremities (the play and movie) and Small Sacrifices in particular. A lot of actresses wanted that Small Sacrifices part, but Farrah got it because her name value and her TV movies got good ratings and lots of press. She totally nailed that role.
I like Sharon Stone, but she's a very inconsistent actress. She can be good, but also very bad. I don't think Sharon could pull of a raw performance as Farrah did in Burning Bed or Extremities or a cold blooded child killer like in Small Sacrifices.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | April 20, 2019 8:34 AM |
Lee Majors was a control freak who wanted an "old fashioned" wife. He didn't handle Farrah not always being that and becoming even more famous than him. I've heard conflicting rumors if he was physically abusive to Farrah.
Ryan O'Neal is a toxic mess. He made Farrah and his children (except Patrick, who wasn't around him growing up as much) dysfunctional messes. Thankfully she left him him no money, but he did nab that Warhol of her that is worth millions.
One of the guys she was with after Ryan beat the hell out of her too. Rumor some of the plastic surgery she had was to fix some of the damage from the beatings she got. He nose was crooked and never the same after that. Must've been badly broken.

She also appeared on one of Comedy Central's roasts where they were brutal to her about her looks being gone and how old and dried up she was. She seemed so different, like she'd had some break with reality. She had been arrested trying to break into her loser boyfriends house.....a lot went wrong after she turned 50. Ryan O'Neal did a number on her, but she was such a healthy living chick before that. A combination of age and alcohol and prescription drugs and some very bad plastic surgery seemed to rob her of vitality and sense. Tatum O'Neal and his son both have said that Ryan beat Farrah. This one time at band camp? I was in line at the grocery store and the woman behind me picked up a magazine with a trashed-out, fucked-up Farrah on the cover. After giving the photo a derisive once over, she said to me, "Wow. Did you EVER think you'd be better looking than Farrah Fawcett?"
I LOVED her. She combined full-on glamour with athleticism, which at the time was a radically different approach. Plus she came across as being incredibly sweet, which really came through on camera. What was it, the 1978 Oscars, where she was poured into a gold dress, and with her lion's mane of gold hair and pretty incredible body she was a sight to behold.

Compare her to someone like Marilyn Monroe, who was truely beautiful. MM had beautiful eyes, not just because of the color, but look at them on their own. They were gorgeous. MM's lips were full without being overly so. Every part of the sum was beautiful. I don't get why every female on the planet has to be compared to MM. Farrah and Marilyn had totally different things going on. Why the incessant comparing? They were both stunning, for fuck's sake. You could even say that Farrah was the MM of her day, if you insist on comparisons.

She had a dazzling American style beauty. Clean, athletic, healthy. Of course she wore makeup and every tousled hair was artfully placed but she radiated natural sexiness and femininity. She wasn't sending it up, she was IT. She WAS very pretty but also a bit angular, lean, sporty. A beautiful woman of her time. Too much hair and teeth, blonde, beauty contestant? She transcended that. She was shy and sweet and yes, underrated.

On the day that Farrah and Michael Jackson died, I went to my neighborhood bodega and the college kid (straight male) who works there kept on talking and talking about Farrah. I told him I thought he'd be more upset about Michael Jackson's death, and he looked at me like I was crazy. "Farrah might have been before my time," he said, "but I know sexy when I see it." So, yeah, I agree with earlier posters that Farrah definitely had "it."

It's interesting the comparisons (and contrasts) between Farrah and Marilyn Monroe. I do think the one characteristic that they did share is vulnerability, which perhaps made them even sexier, especially in the eyes of staight males.

Those bombshells have such a difficult time turning the big 5-0. In your 40s these days, good diet and exercise and modern cosmetic surgery techniques let you stave off a lot of the worst ravages of aging, but after 50 there's no way you're going to look truly young. You can look good for your age, but a really hot 25 year old will leave you in the dust any day of the week. That must be hard to accept when you once WERE the hot 25 year old. Heather Locklear seems to be having a similar hard time accepting reality, as has Madonna. I'm betting Angelina Jolie won't accept 50 gracefully, either.

First of all, we need to recognize that will the performer supplies the raw material, there are thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of artistry, supplied by many different professionals, that go into making a star look good on film. Part of the unearthly glow we're seeing is like a sugary glaze that's been put on a cake.
About FF specifically . . . she was sexy and pretty in her small scale way, which was PERFECT for TV, and her era. Her amazing hair and smile made her exceptional.
As a package, she was easily digestible. And the public loves that.

Farrah Fawcett had no mystery or texture to her.
You cannot compare her to a blonde like Catherine Denueve, who even if it's opaque, just naturally conveys a deeper sense of dramatic impact.

^^ I am saying true beauty and talent have a depth to them. It's like the ocean, where you don't see all that's going on, and more is releaved depending on the tide.
Farrah was kind of a tin star. Essentially shallow. So, when a thread's titled "wow she was beautiful," part of me goes, "Well, to an extent."
by Anonymous | reply 165 | April 20, 2019 7:50 PM |
Beauty can just be beauty, like models in magazines. Depth is nice, of course, but I think you're reading far too much into it.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | April 20, 2019 7:51 PM |
The finer points of beauty are also completely subjective. It depends on what your life experience has been, and what you value.
It's also based somewhat on what one might look like, themselves.

R127 r128 I agree. I don't hate Marilyn but she's never fascinated me and the obsession with her as the Ultimate Hollywood Woman feels so overdone. In the mid 2000s, the Marilyn obsession was particularly out of control. Every b list starlet just HAD to do a photo shoot paying homage to her. Over and over again, the same poofy blond wig and open mouth stare. There were so many glamorous and beautiful women of Old Hollywood and 60s cinema that I'd rather read about . Hedy Lamar, Carole Lombard, Louise Brooks, Sharon Tate (who I personally find the most beautiful ), Catherine Deneuve, Jane Birkin, Claudia Cardinale, even Doris Day.

Sorry but Farrah was really stupid for leaving the Angels as soon as she did. If her agent was any good she would have been in movies from the beginning.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | April 20, 2019 8:15 PM |
Farrah clearly had charisma, but she also had timing to an extent: She was the right look at the right time. California culture ruled in the late 70s, and she was the ultimate California Dream Girl. However, she did hit on the late side: Nearly 30 when Angel's premiered, and she left too soon. She should have stayed for at least 3 seasons to really establish herself. But perhaps she DID feel the clock was ticking and wanted to make hay while she could. Unfortunately, she had shitty taste in projects. A better idea would have been to stay on the TV show, which paid shit, but cash in on endorsements the TV exposure would have guaranteed her.
r169 I don't hate Marilyn but she's never fascinated me and the obsession with her as the Ultimate Hollywood Woman feels so overdone.
What's fascinating to many about MM is that while she was conventionally sexy, there was also an undercurrent of something darker, and more natural, happening beneath the surface (maybe because she was certifiably crazy?)
There's no guarantee she would have ever delivered on her deeper possibilities, had she lived. But she was certainly more complex, in her abilities and her personality, than she was called upon to be in most films and appearances.
She wasn't plastic, even if most of her roles were.

It's not ethical business practice to go on strike just because the tide's happened to turn your way. (FF's case is murkier, because she claims she never actually signed a contract. That argument didn't work so well for Kim Basinger when she dropped out of BOXING HELENA, though.)

I don't think Farrah quit Charlie's Angels due for monetary reasons. She knew she was mega popular and wanted to give movies a shot. They tried temping her into coming back, with a raise and other perks, but she refused all. They sued her and won and she had to come back for 6 episodes for Seasons 3 and 4. She was not happy about that at all.
Suzanne did basically quit because she wanted more money (a lot of it). She (and the others on the show) did deserve more than what they got, but most TV stars didn't make a whole lot back then. Suzanne got greedy. She demanded $150,000 per episode and 10 % of the shows profits and wouldn't settle for less. No way was that happening. Even top male stars didn't get a piece of the show profits back then.

There's a threes company tv movie that came out back in the early 2000s about the goings on behind the scenes of the show. I was in high school when that movie came out. It was pretty interesting how everything played out.
I'm a kid who grew up in the 90s watching Nick at nite. That's how I learned about all of these old tv shows like I love Lucy, the Brady bunch, and threes company etc.
So that's why I had an interest in the tv movie that came out on all of the behind the scenes drama of the sitcom.

THAT R227, is Canada's answer to Barbara Walters and Larry King. Brian Linehan. He really did interview everyone. Famous for his research and asskissing, he was a favorite of the ladies. Ha, I mean Barbra, Shirley MacLaine, Joan Rivers, Joan Collins, Ann-Margret. Believe it or not, most of these old interviews are a bit before my time, but he was very good friends with Joan Rivers who had him move into her NYC palace when his lover of 30 years committed suicide. Joan spoke at his memorial here in Toronto and was hysterical and very sweet too. I was part of the entertainment...
Many of his interviews are on Youtube. Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee, Howard Stern, River Phoenix, Courtney Love, Bette Midler. There wasn't anyone Brian didn't get to talk to. He didn't make celebs cry but he was well known for making them very comfortable with his impeccable research and accurate gossip. Brian Linehan was smart, self-invented, irreverent, arrogant, bitchy, gracious, kind and quite witty. Funny looking. You were allowed to be that GAY on TV in Canada, even 40 years ago. Martin Short had a character on SCTV that parodied him almost too well, called Brock.
Farrah is very soft and pretty indeed in that interview and if not brainy, she was insightful about herself and her career. A bit dull but very sweet. And as everyone says - she was gorgeous.

It's interesting that her only hit movie was made when she was an unknown starlet in a tiny role. People liked her for free on TV, but didn't want to shell out actual money to see her in theaters.
All her starring vehicles bombed.

Critics called it “Somebody Killed Her Career”.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | April 21, 2019 3:41 PM |
Some actors are just meant for the small screen. That's far less of a problem these days, when most of the interesting storytelling is happening on prestige television, and except for Oscar bait dramas the movie theater have been taken over by genre spectacles that can play overseas. But in the 70s, being labeled just a TV actor was an insult. Most actors who hit it big in TV tried to escape the format as soon as possible, with mixed results.

I'd rather be a movie star any day over being a tv star.
The movie star life is just more fascinating. And you accumulate a whole lot more $$$$$ a lot faster as you move up the ladder of cinematic stardom.
Movie stardom is more international than tv. That international appeal is better. Your more of a giant in that position.
r238 The movie star life is just more fascinating. And you accumulate a whole lot more $$$$$ a lot faster as you move up the ladder of cinematic stardom.
But there's a lot fewer jobs, and therefor greater competition for them.
FF was misguided in thinking her ability would carry a film, whereas with TV the standards are lower. People just don't expect as much.
She was good in “Between Two Women” as a woman who becomes caretaker to her cunty mother-in-law played by Colleen Dewhurst. I think Dewhurst won an Emmy.
Thank you, R146... excellent film, excellent acting (by BOTH leads, and yes, Dewhurst took home the Emmy)... here's a link to the entire movie:

You can make bank in TV if you score a hit series on a major network, and it's payout over a longer period of time. You're free to do films in the summer and make even more money that way.
I've heard that actresses in their 30s, especially those with kids, pray for a hit sitcom role. The hours are easy and the longer the show goes on, the more you get paid.

Farrah had a look that I don't think I've seen anywhere else in the world other than the U.S. It's not just that her style and behavior was "all-American" but also her facial bone structure.
I wouldn't be surprised if she had some native in her ancestry somewhere down the line which would account for the uniqueness of the look.
If someone can point out a European woman with this kind of American "pop" I'd be very surprised.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | April 22, 2019 2:49 AM |
Well that sort of is it, right R243? Her beauty was somehow particularly American. People usually just mean a california blonde when they say that, but Farrah had an unusual combination of features that made her different from Cheryl Tiegs or Cheryl Ladd. (YuK)
Her face was angular and her eyes were a beautiful colour - but almost masculine, like Charlotte Rampling. Her jaw was strong and her nose was a bit hooked. Her upper lip was thin and her mouth turned down, yet her full on smile was very natural, feminine and transformational to her face. She had lovely pink undertones to her skin, but she tanned easily and dark. Her body was athletic and lean with small beautiful breasts, toned arms and legs. But there was nothing boyish about her. She could play a female superhero today, but that was already all over TV back then. Who knew it would make someone as dull as Amber Heard or Brie Larson so many millions one day. Farrah looked like the hottest woman tennis player on the pro circuit.
American, but not ALL american. She was beautiful, very. It IS in the eye of the beholder. Comparing Farrah to classic beauties like Grace Kelly or Vivien Leigh won't get her close. But neither was her beauty as dull and obvious as Sharon Tate or Cybill Shepherd. Farrah combined both ancestral and beachy glow. And then there was the intangible energy behind her looks - so determined, sweet and vibrant.

I saw her onstage in Extremeties as a teenager and thought she was very good. It was an extremely exciting play. The movie didn't quite capture how suspenseful it could be. I still wish she had got the Oscar nomination they tried to get her for it.
Wasn't she also well received in The Apostle with Robert Duvall? I think there was Oscar buzz for that or for that Richard Gere movie Dr. T and the Women. I can remember Gene Siskel saying she was quite good playing crazy but you didn't know if she was acting (I think this was right after the Letterman thing.)

Doesn't anyone have gossip about FF relationship with Aaron Spelling? He's the one who pushed super petite, thin, tiny women into the spotlight. He once approached an actress I knew, offering her a deal. She turned him down.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | April 22, 2019 4:43 AM |
Farrah wasn't tiny or too thin. She was a healthy athletic young woman. She didn't like herself in a bikini on CA, because she thought she wasn't curvy enough. Not because she thought she was too big. The late seventies men and women had the best bodies in my opinion. Not overly ripped, but lean, toned and sexy. They worked out but their body development was more from actual sports, some aerobics & old fashioned isometrics. They didn't have custom designed gym bodies. See Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Or Farrah - who played tennis daily. Beautiful people who showed off their best features. They weren't obsessed with altering what they didn't have. Sexy.

In the interview upthread, Farrah says that she and her Charlie's Angels co stars got along but never once socialized outside of work. They were not friends. They must have been like the Desperate Housewives of 1975! They had an instant huge hit, but not all were equally popular. Bound to be jealousies. Farrah and Jaclyn Smith became close much later in life. I don't think Kate Jackson likes anybody does she?

O’Neal looks exhausted; the crisis has filled him with regrets about their past. What would he do over, if he could? “Most of it,” he says softly. “I wish I could do it over with her. I would have been much kinder, more understanding, more mature. I’d lose some of the savagery. I don’t know how she got cancer; maybe some of it was me. She wouldn’t even have a diet soda!”

Ryan O'Neal exploited her until her last day, and long after. But no matter how much fake crying or rewriting of history he did, or how he cut her off from her actual boyfriend, while he and Alana took control of dying Farrah for profit - how greedy for her money and to cast himself in the role of hero he was, A PIG who tried to marry her when she was no longer capable of sitting up - Farrah remained unexploitable. She had sweet dignity and great courage and most of her wits about her doing that gruesome documentary. The world was in for a shock, and the shock was though she was surely dying and surrounded by sketchy ghouls, Farrah had grown to be a formidable woman who was so strong and loving, worthy of anyone's respect. Beauty is an accident and it will surely leave you. Farrah had much more than that to offer this world. She wasn't made of sugarwater and selfishness.
Believe in his great loss, but never believe a word Ryan O'Neal says.

Well, they had some things in common. I met someone who worked for them as their "archivist" - and I thought that sounded so interesting. I imagined them investing in rare artwork and historic relics, or something classy like that. She said, "Well, it's mostly archiving stuff about [italic]them."[/italic]
So they had a full time employee whose job it was just to collect and file press clippings, etc.
WHY? How completely self-involved. ("I simply must document that Page Six piece where I shared my Chicken Marengo recipe in 1999...!")

O'Neal is a complete turd, as others have said. Tatum O'Neal said that he tried to hit on her at Farrah Fawcett's funeral. I don't know why, but according to her he didn't recognise her immediately. They had been estranged for some time and perhaps he was high, drunk, who knows? He attempted to sleaze onto her and she had to say, "Dad, it's me!" Yes, the great love of his life was being buried and he was working the room for some tail. Nice!

Alana Hamilton is a loser Repub, living off the generosity of her exes George and Rod (and they aren't even all that generous- she shops at the Flower Mart). Her claim to fame is her Farrah charity and dropping out a of couple crotch fruit.

Relentless bone structure, toothy smile and she clearly worked out before it was really fashionable. And her titties were the real deal. Just look at that poster that was so famous - I'm sure that there was some airbrushing, but her body was the real deal too. So lean and shapely. And no one other than her could get away with that hair...every woman I knew who attempted to get the Farrah hair always ended up looking like a hair fail. Like when Jennifer Aniston got that Rachel cut. Few people pull it off.
Back OT, Farrah was simply lovely. She was on a lot of TV shows and commercials in the late 60s-early 70s before she really hit it big and she was so fine looking.

Charlies Angels was before my time. But I always thought Alana Stewart was a famous actress and I also thought she was on CA. But then I looked her up, and nothing.

by Anonymous | reply 290 | April 23, 2019 2:12 AM |
One of the things the documentary was criticized for was exploiting Farrah's painful ordeal while offering no enlightenment about her cancer and her questionable choices regarding treatment. Anal Cancer is caused by HPV virus and there is both preventive and screening measures for it.
Farrah was advised to have a colostomy when they found her first tumor, described as the size of a peanut, and she refused that treatment. It's understandable for anyone let alone an actress, but it might have saved her life. Instead she chose radiation and chemo. She thought she had it beat but it metastasized and came roaring back in her liver and other places. There are heartbreaking scenes in the documentary of her being informed of new cancer several times. The treatments she underwent in Germany were unbelievably painful, involving long needles being inserted through her abdomen to chemically attack the many tumors in her liver. It's grueling to watch, she was very brave in her treatment and outlook. She got some reprieves and hopeful news, not to last. She was willful and foolish in some ways. Who are we to judge? She did give up on treatment near the end of her life. When Ryan was telling Barbara Walters he still planned to marry Farrah. Her son comes in leg shackles to crawl in bed with her when she's barely conscious anymore. It's too much and quite exploitive, though no fault of Farrah.
I've lost my way a bit with this post. We've all known people who've suffered and lost and it's best not to remember all the worst details. It's hard to watch on television, especially when you get the feeling that the patient is being used by the ones she trusts most. A release of the documentary would surely make someone money. Better to sell the Warhol I guess. RIP Farrah.
